Hey my lolo on my mom's side was originally from Silay. In the 60's they moved to Bacolod when he became congressman then moved back to Manila in the 70's. I've only ever been to Bacolod once when I was 7 but my family has been doing a lot of work there lately and have restrengthened our roots there so I plan to visit when I fly to the Philippines this year for Christmas.

What's up folks!

I was just in Bacolod for the Christmas New Year Holidays. I was born in Manila but I grew up in Bacolod, went to La Salle, moved to the US when I was 12.

I've been going back the last 2 years, restrenghtening roots as pinkmoon mentioned.

Mother's side "Borromeo" is originally from Isabela, Father's side "Gaston" is from Silay.

I'm originally from Batangas, both of my parents were born there, and lived there, and met there...

After they bore there 2nd son (that's me!), they went abroad (That was 1983...i think.)

My ninang-sa-binyag took me and my older sister to Bacolod when i was 4 years old. My sis was turning 10 that year.

I studied in E.T.C.S. then UNO-R then USLS today...

That's my story.

etienne: there are lots of new restos in bacolod. one is imelda's cuisine, owned by the dela ramas, its fine dining pero super barato ang food. rice in a box is also a hit there now, i can't remember the other names though,i was just there for the holidays eh. pero shempre, i made sure i went to manokan! namit guid ya!

haaynaku www.bacolodchickeninasal.com . They are in Manila. Cousins that I grew up started the business, it seems to be doing okay. But definitely, chicken inasal seems to taste better when it's in Bacolod. Psychological? Maybe.

Yeah Manokan is always good. We always go to "Aida's". Good Stuff - Manamit Gid. I wish we had something like that here. The other thing I miss is "Kansi".

The SEAG spectacle


The Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia witnessed the world-class opening of the 23rd SEAGames Saturday, at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. It was quite a spectacle, and city and provincial officials and the SEAGames organizers should be proud of a job well done. It rained in the morning but the Good Lord heard the prayer of thousands for a dry afternooon. And so, to a very eager and supportive crowd, our MassKara dancers, the Silay Ensemble and the West Negros College Dance troupe gave the best performance of their lives.

The crowd cheered the athletes of the 11 participating countries, but our hearts belonged to our athletes, and as the Philippine National Anthem was played, everyone joined in on the singing. Patty Cuaycong, Carla Gomez, Token Lizares, Ninfa Leonardia and I were misty-eyed. It was a proud moment for all of us.

My congratulations to Rep. Monico Puentevella, Mayor Bing Leonardia, Gov. Joseph Marañon, and all the committees for making it all possible. MABUHAY!!!

Keeping up with the spirit of the SEAGames, and the coming Christmas holidays, almost all the hotels and malls are shining with lights. So too are the bright, big lights of the Paglaum Sports Complex and some residences, particularly that of Felicito and Nanette Sanson in Mountainview.

One of Bacolod's landmarks, the PNB Bacolod Building, finally lit up its façade after being dormant for years, thanks to its owner, Lucio Tan, who is also one of the major sponsors of the SEAGames. The putting up of the lights was undertaken by the bank's Engineering Design and Maintenance Division teams, composed of Raffy Mercado and Errol Rarugal and Rhea Olimpo, headed by SAVP Jesus Ma. Borja, led by CEO Omar Byron Mier, EVP Carmen Huang and FVP Ma.
