there's no need for bashing, i agree, but lets just be objective... the Top 10 are (IN MY OPINION ONLY so no refuting please, i repeat this is juz an opinion..hehe.. not in random order)

1. University of the Philippines- what other university bears our country's name? its being the best is just inarguable, the thomasians are getting on my nerves.
2. De La Salle University- I dont understand why they gained the reputation of being 'bobo' or 'skul bukol' eh their curriculum is very rigid, they have excellent facilities and they recieved the PAASCU level iV accreditation earlier than Ateneo.Im from UP and i give higher regard to DLSU than to ADMU maybe because Atenean pexers are so arrogant, hehe, f.y.i. its my first time to brwose through pex i registered juz a few hours ago.
3. Ateneo De Manila University- yah yah its one of the best but most of the atenean pexers here are...hehe.. *peace.. ok, so they won a lot of debate contests, has a very prestigious law school and educated a number of prominent people, yah, its still a good school, most percieve admu as being more academically superior to lasalle, like my lola.. but still dlsu is # 71 and admu is # 72 in the asiaweek survey... (though the difference is only small .03 or something)
4. University of Asia and the Pacific- the institution is quite new but it is steadily gaining ahead in the race.
5. San Beda College- often underestimated but in fact it is really a good school, i know a lot of people studying there (some graduates) and they are all well-rounded individuals (and cool friends!bedans have the greatest sense of humor). And their school pride is overwhelming.
6. University of Santo Tomas- yah its the oldest and one of the most known. But when i mentioned UST to my tita our family friend they all shook their heads with a slight cringe. hey! i dont say this because thomasians are constantly bickering with us iskos. the quality of its education is not as good as it was before.. its terribly overcrowded.. and other reasons i rather not mention.. but hey! i have plenty of friends studying there! the CFAD program is great!
7. University of the East- *** lang i think maybe its one of the best
8 Centro Escolar University- yah, its quite good there.. esp. the dentistry course
9. Miriam College or St. Paul University - hmm,, its good there too,
10. St. Louis University- the best in baguio.. maybe better than UP-baguio? dont mean to betray my own alma matter..hehe.. im in Diliman btw...

so ayun, thats just my opinion.. any violent reactions.. its better to keep them subdued.. xe its just my opinion, sino ba naman ako diba? LoL

The top prestigious schools in the Philippines:

#1 Ateneo: The traditional school of choice of the Philippine social AND intellectual elite. Produces many of the country's top leaders in business and government. Part of the prestigious global Jesuit network of educational institutions.

#2 UP: The choice of some of the intellectual elite. However, it's usually the 3rd choice of the social elite behind the Ateneo and La Salle. Has the broadest course offerings. Tends to be overrated because of it's status as the state university. Popular destination of public high shool graduates.

#3 La Salle: The choice of some of the social elite. However, it's usually the 3rd choice of the intellectual elite behind the Ateneo and UP. Tends to be a fallback option of the top high school graduates. Nevertheless, still popular especially among fans of the UAAP. Rapid expansion of the system has compromised quality.

#4 UST: A very good school that provides great value for money. Excellent programs in medicine, fine arts, architecture, philosophy, ECE, etc.

#5 and #6 UE and FEU (tie): Very good program in medicine. Broad course offerings. Good business courses. Good value for money.

----------------------------------------------

The following top 7 - 10 are in random order

MAPUA: Good engineering program. Has become a bit overpriced.

University of San Carlos: Good programs in chemical engineering and law. A bit underrated.

Silliman University: Quality programs, overall. Excellent journalism program. Great campus environment.

UA&P: Up and coming university. Attracts some of the social elite. Narrow focus on business and economics.

i hope UST's law program (which is also the oldest law school in the country) would be able to improve its passing rate in the years to come. malayo pa rin siya from the other three's (UP, San Beda and Ateneo) passing rates. however, UST's passing rate is now in the 70s+ and that is a good sign. Imagine naman, the national passing rate is just 31% and marami rin namang law schools sa bansa.

correction:

the oldest school in the Philippines is Univ. of San Carlos (If I'm not mistaken, Colegio de San Carlos before sila naging univ. ).....

and if I'm correct.... the Univ. of Sto. Tomas is the Asia's oldest university, so definitely Philippine's oldest university.

As far as being the oldest university/college is concerned, the University of San Carlos in Cebu is the true OLDEST UNIVERSITY and has the right to own the title.

San Carlos University was founded in 1595 by the Spaniards and is even "older than Harvard University of the United States and the OLDEST in ASIA". UST is the second, having been founded in the year 1611.

If you don't mind, I'm just gonna comment on some items in you post.

there's no need for bashing, i agree, but lets just be objective... the Top 10 are (IN MY OPINION ONLY so no refuting please, i repeat this is juz an opinion..hehe.. not in random order)

1. University of the Philippines- what other university bears our country's name? its being the best is just inarguable, the thomasians are getting on my nerves.

You can use "undisputable" rather than using "inarguable".
It sounds better though.

Since its your first time, you don't have to generalize that Ateneans are arrogant. Such statement is so preposterous. I know some Ateneans here (in PEX) who are not "arrogant" as what you stated^. So please don't generalize it.

For your information, UST is not the oldest university.

History of University of Santo Tomas

The University of Santo Tomas is the oldest existing university in Asia and in terms of student poulation, the largest Catholic university in the world located in one campus.

It was founded on April 28, 1611 by the third Archbishop of Manila, Msgr. Miguel de Benavides, O.P., together with Frs. Domingo de Nieva and Bernardo de Santa Catalina. It was originally conceived as a school to prepare young men for the priesthood.

Located within Intramuros, the Walled City, it was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, Saint Thomas Aquinas.

In 1624, the Colegio was authorized to confer academic degrees in Theology, Philosophy and Arts. On November 20, 1645 Pope Innocent X elevated the College to the rank of a university and in 1680, it was subsequently placed under royal patronage. In 1785, for the exceptional loyalty shown by the administration and students who volunteered to defend Manila against the British invasion, King Charles III granted it the title of "Royal University".

ako ba ang tinutukoy mo?? then read it again.

i was the one na nag-argue dat ust is d oldest uiv, and not the usc (as tophe_17 said na it was san carlos daw.)

kung nabasa mo ang previous page, tophe said na it was san carlos daw...

that's why copy and paste ang inilagay ko about info sa ust and usc in case mahirapan sya to research which is which.

peace!

I never did get that (ridiculous in my opinion) argument that UST is the oldest university because USC only became a university in 1948. There isn't any ontological difference. I mean, do you really say that the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario is different from UST? Of course not.

Following that logic, San Carlos is the oldest.

haha,

people just can't take the fact that UST is one of the best universities in the country. poor souls

ah basta underrated ang UST, ewan ko kung bakit, siguro masyadong humble ang admin....the admin must do something about it....kasi nakatatak na sa isip ng mga tao ang UP.Ateneo.DLSU....not unless aware ang tao saka nya sasabihin UP.UST.Ateneo.DLSU... reputation counts....eh walang sikat na reputation ang UST nowadays thats why it is underrated....parang nagiging 2nd choice or fallback ang UST, na in fact, fall back ang DLSU..hehehe no offense, pero mas madaling makapasa sa DLSU kesa UST. medyo madali makapasok sa UST, pero mahirap sa loob...sa Ateneo, mahirap makapasok, mahirap sa loob and same with UP...pero puro lang ito generalization.

personally, in any school, there will be students who stand out and there will be students who suck big time.. if ever there is a way to rank the top universities and colleges based on their students, one should look at the average student of that university/college. for example, who is better? the average UP student or the average Ateneo student or the average lasalle student.

If this were the basis, then i can rank them (the top schools) accordingly:

UP
ATENEO
LASALLE
UST

SLU is 3rd among High-Performing Educational Institutions

SLU ranks 3rd among 296 schools with high passing rates in licensure examinations according to the "1999-2003 Compilation of Statistics on the Performance of Schools in Various Licensure Examinations." The report was prepared by the Educational Statistics Task Force (ESTF) - a joint undertaking of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The study covered 1188 colleges and universities that fielded 10 or more examinees in any of the licensure examinations between 1999 and 2003.

Of the top schools, University of the Philippines - Diliman lead the list with University of Sto Tomas coming in at second. Saint Louis University was third followed by University of the Philippines - Los Banos and Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan).

According to the report, SLU has a high performance level in 12 examinations. These include the following:

Exam Rank (among High
Performing Schools) SLU Overall Passing Rate National Overall Passing Rate
Category: 1000 or more Examinees
Teachers - Secondary 2nd (among 66 schools) 88% 33.47%
Category: 100 to 999 Examinees
Architects 2nd (among 29 schools) 55% 36.17%
Civil Engineers 11th (among 111 schools) 65% 33.47%
Medical Technologists 2nd (among 42 schools) 97% 50.65%
Mechanical Engineers 7th (among 49 schools) 72% 43.77%
Nurses 4th (among 128 schools) 95% 49.05%
Pharmacists 2nd (among 22 schools) 99% 62.78%
Social Workers 1st (among 25 schools) 95% 50.89%
Teachers- Elementary 4th (among 392 schools) 92% 32.76%
Category: 10 to 99 Examinees
Geodetic Engineers 2nd (among 15 schools) 71% 41.02%
Librarians 1st (among 52 schools) 90% 52.42%
Radiologic Technology 1st (among 26 schools) 92% 36.93%

The report also showed that:

SLU has the distinction of being the only school in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) that made it to the TOP TEN list of high performing schools.
SLU had a 67% overall passing rate with 7117 successful examinees out of 10551. The National overall passing rate is 35.83%.
Out of 804 private schools, 200 or 24.88% have high passing rates. Among the top performers are University of Sto Tomas, Saint Louis University and Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan).
The data generated from this study are being used for the improvement and upgrading of the educational system in the Philippines. This information can also be used by parents as a guide in choosing schools for their children. Clearly, Saint Louis University is one of the best choices!

'Eto tanong na maayos at sana wala akong makitang off-tangent posts:

What's up with UA&P? Some people even presumptuously and carelessly (I don't know if it's a biased opinion or what) prefer the school over UST and other more established universities? I have nothing against UA&P, ha. I just want to understand the basis of their opinion. At isa pa, bakit mahal? Ano meron? :smoke:

"biased/blinded opinion" vs "rich history," ano mas matatag diyan?

Why always pick on UAP? It's prestigious even if you take off their high tuition fees. I have first and second degree cousins there and they are students and alumni of UAP and they get good work and high pay. So what's worth it in saying that UAP is only prestigious in terms of tuition when you have not proven it?

br0m0thymoLbLuE
Jan 14, 2006, 03:26 PM
Why always pick on UAP? It's prestigious even if you take off their high tuition fees. I have first and second degree cousins there and they are students and alumni of UAP and they get good work and high pay. So what's worth it in saying that UAP is only prestigious in terms of tuition when you have not proven it?
Why are you so affected? Re-read my post :)

they prefer uap because they didnt pass anywhere else...

Nyai.

An Atenean friend of mine who toured me around Ateneo just the other day (Which I saw for the first time) told me there must be some sort of brainwashing on the part of the Jesuits.

Anyway, my top 5 prestigious schools (Wala akong masabi sa ibang schools eh, hehe) are:

1) UP Diliman
- I just look up to this university for some reason. Maybe it's because most of everyone I meet who studies in this university (In a non-certificate course) does seem to have a lot of things between the ears, and it's not luga.
2) UA&P
- Given. Producing great graduates since... a few years ago.
3) UST
- People here do have something between the ears too, although some parts of it are luga. A sense of fashion, contrary to popular belief, does not have anything to do with being edukado.
4) [The] Ateneo
- While I do admire lawyers who graduate from this school (so they're exempted), I know only a few Ateneans who do not exemplify arrogance in just about everything they do. Besides that, a school with a lot of history, great debaters, and the best fake Sunken Garden inside the campus.
5) La Salle
- A good school, but somehow, lately, they're not able to maintain the quality of education. Great engineering courses, I've heard.

Ano meron? :smoke:

Just to answer your query, perhaps because the modern Filipino looks up to business schools as globalization begins to slowly replace the Cold War system. Unfortunately, UST isn't a business school (at least not in reputation). Its students are inclined not to think like management and rather hostile to English-speakers (unfortunately the language of business). In other words your students still think in line with the industrial age (security, employment, etc.) Perhaps the only exeption are the few Cantonese studying in your school.

UAP on the other hand is a business school and was established by Dr. Villegas, a well-known authority in economics and a LaSallian, regarded as the best business school in the country together with AIM.

Another way of looking at it is prestigious is associated by Filipinos with elitism. Thomasians in general has admitted to being non-elitist while UAP
has an elitist character similar to La Salle and Ateneo.

UP is an exeption simply as the country's State University. This title not only adds prestige to that institution but attracts socialites from prestigious high schools as well.

Another thing, perhaps because UST maybe a pontifical university but the royalty of the Roman Catholic Church has greatly been demised in Philippine society.

Lastly, UST has this image of being just another university in the University Belt. Of course Thomasians know this isn't true but so far the university hasn't shaken that image off.

Of course this is just another opinion and you need not necessarily agree.

1. UP
- this school offers the widest selection of courses and many of these courses are centers of excellence. Having a low tuition fee, this school attracts quality students who do not want to pay a lot of money for their college degree.

2. ADMU
- this school is very strict when it comes to student admission. The school makes sure that the students who enter the school are ready to face a rigorous college life.

3. DLSU
- even if this school's admission process is not strict as ADMU's, some of its courses are well made (e.g. engineering courses). Also, the facilities of this school are excellent, providing a quality education to its students.

4. UST

This thread topic is like a game. And the mechanics of the game would be to sort the brownness of skin tones from the lightest brown to the darkest brown. Then I came along and bellowed, “Hey! Instead of sorting brownness, why don’t we just concede to the fact that we are all browns and start finding our place in the spectrum of colors?”

We may not call it (your list) as "prestigious". If that's the case, then you shouldn't have made a list of schools for you to be consistent on your statement you made below the list.

What's its purpose then?

tophe_17

.... to sort the brownness of skin tones from the lightest brown to the darkest brown?

So what's your motive then in listing those schools?
I suppose it is, to isolate the "lightest browns" from the "darkest"?
So what's the difference then? In as far as prestige is concerned?
Yes this country is way too far to be even called prestigious. But then, in as far as listing "good" schools is concerned, or let me say, isolating "light browns" is concerned, its tantamount to saying that "hey these schools in my list are different!", thereby creating an idea of prestige. The only difference is that being "prestigious" in a country like the Philippines, would not (or will never) guarantee an equal prestige with other already-"prestigious" countries, with the current state of this nation.

So what's the purpose of your list then?
If it is only to isolate the lightest browns with the darkest ones, therefore, its a typical Academe PEXer useless ranking... like most trolls do...

... and that is... deserving to have a "prestigious" place in PEX Trash Bin.

.... to sort the brownness of skin tones from the lightest brown to the darkest brown?

In addition to it, you might as well give explanation on how you came up with your list for it to be a little more sensible. Again, let me reiterate what I said before on this thread: Its useless, ranking (or listing, in your case) schools without giving at least a brief explanation on how a poster made his list.

Oh well...

Some tips lang dude if you want to win an argument.
Whenever possible, do not agree with your opponent’s streak of ideas.
Win by convincing and not by mere pursuing offensive attacks.
Attack semantics and toy with Anaxagoras instead.

There was a deliberate twist in my premise. "My list" was pure accessory or a prelude to my main premise – it is immaterial, so to speak.

For a moment I thought I was in Harry Potter Forever Club on-line.

Harry yelled, "Sectumsempra! SECTUMSEMPRA!" But though gashes appeared in their sodden rags and their icy skin, they had no blood to spill: They walked on, unfeeling, their shrunken hands outstretched toward him, and as he backed away still farther, he felt arms enclose him from behind, thin, fleshlcv. arms cold as death, and his feet left the ground as they lifted him and began to carry him, slowly and surely, back to the water, anil he knew there would be no release, that he would be drowned, and become one more dead guardian of a fragment of Voldemorts shattered soul...

whatever you say dude

win or loose UST is the best!

hmmm...pag-aralan natin ang sinabi niya.

1. whatever you say dude win or loose UST is the best!
lose po at hindi loose (hmmm...simpleng bagay ngunit nagkakamali pa?)

2. whatever you say dude win or loose UST is the best!

3. whatever you say dude win or loose UST is the best!

Haha! Hehehe...

Why dont you have yourself treated first at that Royal and Pontifical Waste Water Treatment Plant? With those unintelligent posts that you have posted so far here at PEX, you qualify to be treated in that facility together with Thomasian sh!t. :naughty:
