Mapua grads sweep IT software dev’t contest

That young Filipino minds seem equally excel, if not edge out their American and Indian counterparts even in the technical field of information technology (I.T.) seems proven once more in the one-year software for Java-bared mobile application training and contest sponsored by Nokia. And Mapua Tech equally proved its excellence in I.T. education apart from its leadership in traditional engineering courses.

The Internet software developed by four Mapua graduates swept all top four prizes in the recently concluded “Mobile Internet Development Competition” sponsored by Nokia, European I.T. center and the German Agency of Technological Cooperation (G.T.Z.)

Prior to the selection of winners, 12 out of 34 entries were pre-selected and became concept winners. Four entries in their working prototypes were judged as the winners of the Nokia Challenge 2003.

The Mapua grads who copped the first place was Engr. John Michael Lozano, B.S. Computer Engineering, with its “My Brain Bench” entry. Lozano’s software is a mobile training designed users groom into his desired field of education, with several training modules. His prizes include free trip for two to Europe and R150,000.

Lozano’s twin brother, Engr. John Paul Lozano, an industrial engineering product of Mapua Tech won the R75,000 cash, free trip to Singapore for two for his Java-based “My Home Remedies” program – a comprehensive safe and practical health and stress advisory, management guide application through mobile phones.

Another computer engineering Mapua graduate, Engr. Louie Marco De Los Reyes’ “My Calc Buddy” – a scientific calculator tuned into a mobile phone was adjudged the 3rd best. Reyes and his project partner, Delfin Juan III, a technical consultant of the Mapua Information Technology College in Makati received R50,000 and a 6610 cellphone from Nokia. Their work, another concept winner of the Nokia Challenge, solves the problem of people in dealing with mathematical formulas allowing mobile phone users instant solutions to most difficult math problems in seconds, whenever, wherever.

MITC’s instructors Porfirio Atienza and Eugene Lozada’s “Mapping” program, another winner was declared 4th prize winner. And got R25,000 plus a Nokia phone. A highly configurable map engine, supporting the display of information requiring visual locations reference, it enables the user to configure their map to display locations of deliveries, hotels, restaurants and traffic information. The European Group (Nokia, European I.T. Center Gesma GTZ) training project trained over 18,000 professionals from school and companies at the Sun Micro Systems and had 60 original entries 12 of which were chosen “concept” winners who were awarded R25,000 each included participants from ABS-CBN, Smart Communications, SPI Technologies, Infinit-e Asia, University of the Philippines and Brandscape apart from Mapua Tech.

Winning programs also include “Broadcast” done by Infinit-e Asia a system to create short (50-character) message broadcasted in electronic billboards in specific locations in the city. The Guitar Tuner mobile software done by Paul Sorino of U.P. can make the cellphone as a standard electronic guitar tuner.
