how long did ur masteral thesis take you to finish? from proposal to defense.

do u think a semester (6 mos.) is enough? i mean if you're serious w/ it and you re doing it full-time.

i started graduate school second semester of 1997. i hurriedly finished all academic requirements... then took the comprehensive exam... then one sem passed, i submitted my topic proposal.. i was glad they were able to chose one.. that was in 2000. 3 years have passed until now i am struggling to complete my thesis proposal.. take note, thesis proposal pa lang yan. yung first three chapters ah.

i am not sure, i think i lost my will to finish when i shifted to a work entirely different from what i have been doing... and now i am planning to shift again or should i say concentrate with the current one but with another company.

there are times that i want to just cease from trying hard to complete my thesis and move on..

The program I got in was a 14-month Graduate Course. Teaching is modular and the university is in trimestral system so the pacing was faster than usual for a regular MA degree.

When we started our subject on research methodology on the 2nd term, I was already sure of what my topic is and what are my thesis problems are. Although the problem statement had undergone a lot of revision, the essence of what i wanted to study remained. Moreover, the study was qualitative in nature and it took time for me to familiarize with the format for I had an quantitative undergraduate thesis.

So, thats about a year of finishing my thesis.

I joined my MS program in 1999 and finished all the academic subjects on time and passed our comprehensive exams in 2001. However, I didn't have the time to start my thesis because of the pressures of work and lack of inspiration to write. I had the topic on my mind but it's just that I didn't have the motivation then to pursue my thesis because of the amount of time you have to devote in writing...plus of course I was looking for a company to sponsor me. What made me decide to continue was when my classmate successfully defended his research proposal..I felt left behind and was motivated to write again. Luckily I found a company who sponsored my thesis so I enrolled 3rd term of last year.

I finished the entire thesis writing phase in 8 months. I started in November, defended my proposal in April and defended my thesis in August. My paper was done in July and I just had it refined and corrected by my adviser. I graduated last Sat. You just have to make a timetable of your writing activities and set deadlines on yourself per chapter. Once you make an attempt to actually sit in front of the computer and begin to write, tuloy-tuloy na. You and your adviser must agree with your schedule. I suggest that you formulate a GANTT chart of your writing activities. And don't feel too pressured. A week before April 11 (my thesis proposal) I went to Puerto Galera to enjoy the beach and relax. If you fully-know and believe in your thesis then you'll do just fine.

True, I have an officemate who took up his masters in Ateneo. He's now 38 years old. He regrets not having finished his thesis when he already fufilled all the academic requirements...parang nanghinayang sya because he didn't take his thesis seriously and let years pass by without doing it. Ngayon nag-lapse na ang eligibility nya to finish his Masters. Kaya he told me to go with it and finish it asap.

I was also fortunate enough to have kind bosses. They gave me extended leaves just for me to finish the remaining chapters and defend it to the panel. :)

We have different motivations to get us through the thesis stage. On my part, I had no choice but to finish on time or else my scholarship would not be renewed. Like archerguy, I was very fortunate to have a supportive boss who gave me leaves. Although most of it were without pay (I was a contractual then), I accepted it, learned to move on and told myself I know what to prioritize.

Ask your parents or friends for support because things will get really stressful towards the end.

i agree with radialhead.

bago ka magsulat pamatay din ang comprehensive exams.

it was so stressful. writing a paper also entails editing and proofreading. plus, the recommendations made by your panel will have to be considered. kulang nalang ipa-rewrite lahat.

after finishing my master's in up-d. ayoko na.

hell talaga. pero after that, of course super happy ka kasi it is a scholarly achievement at alam mong pinaghirapan mo. nakaambag ka pa sa body of knowledge ng iyong napiling area.
as if naman may "bago." LOL

radialhead is correct. u really need to have some kind of support. it will really help a lot.

As early as now you should be doing serious literature-gathering on your thesis topic. Don't expect to find all the reading materials in one semester..chances are you might extend your thesis enrolment. Like archerguy said you must organize your time very well. I also found it hard before to motivate myself to begin writing my thesis in front of a computer. Buti na lang nasimulan ko na. You know what it's not really as hard as what most people here think...I enjoyed writing my masteral thesis because I really like the topic. Try to change your perception and think of it as an enjoyable process. Make sure also that your adviser agrees with your topic and is interested with it as well.

Good luck!
