View Full Version : Do you like Martina Hingis? Why or why not?

Hi guys! I'm just wondering, do you guys like Martina? Well, some people love her 'cause she's a great tennis player. However, some people don't like her 'cause of her attitude.
I personally dont like her being a brat and all, but I cant deny the fact that she's good.

Martina's period of Grand Slam dominance came at a time when Steffi Graf, tennis' most dominant female player, was sidelined because of injury. When Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce were streaky at best, and the Williams sisters were still developing their power game.
When Martina is on, she's absolutely brilliant to watch. Her game shows the intelligence of a player with ten years more experience, and she has much of Graf's unflappable mental toughness (prior to the 99 French Open).
Since then, Graf made a resurgence at the French and Wimbledon (and then promptly retired), Davenport came into her own, and the sisters Williams simply dominated on the hard courts.
With all the competition, it's crunch time for Hingis. She can step up and become the game's most dominant player, and flame out as another "Queen for a Day".
As for her attitude, I think that this will be a major factor in her game. Given the fact that she's a teenager, she could flame out if public opinion is constantly leveled against her -- regardless of her unquestionable talent.

You know, I'm kinda uncomfortable with the younger generation of tennis players (women). It seems that they're there for the fame and distinction. Whatever happened to love for the game?
Well, I hope I'm wrong.

I like her taste in outfit when she plays, I like the fact that she's an all-court player,
I admire her physical regimen. But this is all there is to it 'coz her 'airheaded-ness' is really a turn-off. She has a lot to learn on humility from Graf.
i never really liked Martina Hingis! her personality and everything, well of course just like CARAMBA here...i cant deny that she's a good player. but despite all her talent and her love for tennis (if there's any...i have this feeling she's just playing for the money, popularity and for the sake of being on top!)...she seems to act very unprofessional.
nowadays, martina's nasty words and childish acts has been a dominant story in tennis. first at the French Open...where she said that there is no way STEFFI GRAF can win over her because steffi is old and that it's not her time anymore. and on the US Open, she caught fire with Richard Williams. saying that the Williams' has always had a big mouth. unfortunately, martina found her lesson during the finals of the French...wherein Steffi came out strong and overpowered her! second to that was her 1st round loss to Jelena Dokic at Wimbledon. third of course, was Serena Williams' move during the finals of the US...to prove martina wrong and as a revenge for her sister, Venus.
she has a lot to learn in terms of humility! --ditto on that PUNKYBRUSTER

nice hearing from you cj! i can see that you're also a tennis fan, you started a topic a week ago... it seems that there aren't a lot of tennis fans here though... oh well
cj, what do you have to say about the williams sisters?
Sandman
Oct 7, 1999, 08:13 PM
Martina is a *****. despite her being a good all-court player (the best in the wta tour today), she is a ***** off-court.
I like Lindsay Davenport's decorum on and off the court.
yup caramba, there's something wrong about the younger generation of tennis players. i think they're playing it not for the love of the game but for the money.
The Rock
Oct 7, 1999, 11:35 PM
The Rock says that it's obvious how talented Hingis is. It's also becoming more and more obvious how *****y she can be. Oh and yeah, she's cute too. But then, Venus Williams is probably a bigger *****. Now The Rock is no fan of the Williams sisters in the first place but when Serena won the U.S. Open, she was all smiles yet very humble. Venus couldn't even congratulate her sister for winning. It looked like she was real bitter about not beating Hingis and having her kid sister win a Grand Slam before she did. When the sisters won the women's doubles, Venus said that it was just a nice consolation prize. What kind of sport is that?
CJ, when hingis said that Richard Williams has a big mouth, wasn't she telling the truth? The guy is arrogant to a fault. He's not just proud of his daughters, he feels that they should be the only ones playing tennis out there. If you question the younger generation's love for tennis, look to their parents. They force their kids into the game early so that they can make money for the folks. Look at the Jennifer Capriati tragedy. If you smell what The Rock is cookin!
hi there caramba!
yah, i think you're right...there aren't too many tennis fans in here. but at least most people who love tennis often respond to topics like this.
anyway, with regards to the williams sisters. well, evidently they are playing extremely good nowadays. best performance in fact...but its just too bad that their father is a threat to their career. serena is better than her sister i guess. i mean, venus may have a powerful serve and a great backhand but she doesnt have strong plays like her sister-serena. however, i wont be surprised if both of them will be rivals very soon in battle for the top spot in tennis!
CaRaMBa
Oct 8, 1999, 10:57 AM
The Rock: Yeah, some parents push their kids too far. I heard that since Martina Hingis was a little kid, a lot of her toys would be related to tennis, plastic tennis racket, balls, etc. And sheesh, she was named after Martina Navratilova! I mean, since she was a baby her mother had plans already!
Sandman: Do you have any kwento on Martina's "*****iness" off court? Curious lang ako. And yeah, they say that Lindsay is a really good person.
The Rock,
maybe Martina Hingis is on the right side of things when she mentioned something about the Williams'. but please take into consideration that Martina did a hasty generalization! Richard Williams should deserve the comment but not Serena and Venus. anyway, have you seen that press conference...Martina even said it in a sarcastic manner! tttssss.
if Martina is ranked #1 in the world...she still doesnt have the right to say crazy things like that in public. i mean, if doesnt have anything nice to say...she better shut her mouth! or better yet, just keep it to herself, agree?
hey, about the parents. well, they always seem to act like that...very unlikely so to speak. they seem to take control over their children's lives thus, becoming a threat in terms of career. strong example maybe Peter Graf, Melanie Molitor, Richard Williams, and even Alexandra Stevenson's Mom. well, talk about responsible parents i guess!

Ha, more on the "Better" Williams sister
"No go"
Serena Williams denied ATP wild card

Posted: Thursday October 07, 1999 12:32 PM
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Serena Williams, the U.S. Open champion, wants a new challenge: playing against men. The men's tour is not taking up the challenge.
Markus Guenthard, director of the upcoming Eurocard Open in Stuttgart, said Serena Williams had asked him for a wild card.
"I don't know how serious she is. I told her that if she was serious, she should apply in writing," Guenthard said Thursday.
Guenthard said he saw Serena and her mother, Oracene, two days ago at the women's Porsche Grand Prix in Filderstadt, just outside Stuttgart.
Serena Williams, who beat her older sister Venus in the final of the Grand Slam Cup in Munich on Sunday, lost Wednesday her first match in Filderstadt, to Sandrine Testud.
Guenthard said Serena first asked him for a wild card during the French Open this summer. "Since then, I hadn't heard anything."
"But if she asked me again this week, it means she has thought about it, although I haven't received anything in writing yet," he said.
The $2.45 million Eurocard Open starts Oct. 25 and is one of the biggest non-Grand Slam tournaments in the world. One of the so-called Super 9 series, it has drawn all Top 50 men.
Guenthard said that if he did receive anything in writing from Serena, he would consult with the ATP Tour and Ion Tiriac, the tournament's promoter.
"This could be a precedent and we have to think carefully. I wouldn't want it to be a gag. And I am not sure how good it would be for her to be thrashed by one of the top men," Guenthard said.
ATP Tour spokesman Nicola Arzani said Serena would not be allowed to play in Stuttgart.
"To be able to play an ATP tournament, you have to be a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals," Arzani said. "Serena Williams cannot become a member of the ATP because she is a woman. That answers the question."
Boris Becker, the retired German star who was in London on Thursday for the Davis Cup draw, said he thought it was a "pretty good joke."
"If she is going to play, lots of men will go the other way and ask for wild cards into women's competitions and you will see some strange winners of women's Grand Slams," Becker said.
"I doubt it very much if Serena could compete with the men. She is very masculine and very strong but if you compare her game to the likes of Pete Sampras or Andre Agassi in all honesty you are talking about two different sports," Becker said.
At the Australian Open last year, the Williams sisters played a set each for fun against German player Karsten Braasch and won three games between them. Braasch was then ranked No. 203 in the world.

Paging CJ or anyone who has info
Ano na naman itong bagong chismis about Elizabeth Hurley and Andre Agassi? Ano ba yan?! Share info pls! =)
hey CARAMBA,
the rumor spreading about Elizabeth Hurley being drop-dead-crazy over Andre Agassi is TRUE!!! believe it or not...she's doing everything to win Andre's heart. i'll update you guys with regards to this tomorrow--promise! i have to do something really important.
but hey...I WOULD LIKE YOU GUYS TO KNOW THAT THIS STORY (i have a clipping kasi!) IS SUPER INTRIGUING...SO, BETTER WAIT, OKAY?
The Rock
Oct 12, 1999, 01:56 AM
CJ and Caramba, even if liz Hurley has a crush on Andre, she's already got Hugh Grant, and Andre's new girlfriend is fellow tennis superstar Steffi Graf. They've been seen together at numerous events including the De La Hoya-Trinidad match. Andre's been avoiding answering questions about Steffi directly, pero medyo obvious na sila eh. As far as Serena Williams and her plan to play men, it just proves that neither Williams sister is really a better PERSON. Both are arrogant to a fault, just like their loudmouth dad. Bagay silang lahat magsama ni Hingis. The Rock loves Anna Kournikova more than all of them cobined anyway! If only she dedicated herself more to the sport, she'd be a real force to deal with. If you smell what The Rock is cookin!

The Rock: Anna Kournikova ha! =) =) Yiheee bakit kaya? Kidding! =) Anyway, yeah we know Elizabeth Hurley has Hugh Grant and Andre Agassi has Steffi Graf. Kaya nga mas intriguing yung chismis eh. Why is she trying to get Andre's attention, diba? (Naks, close kami ni Andre.)
Sige CJ, I'll wait for your updates. =)
The Rock,
if you have been reading my recent posted topic...(it talked about andre and steffi and their alleged love match!), you would have known that i have been informing people about them already. saying na they're seen in the de la hoya-trinidad match and that andre eventually said that steffi is somebody really special for him at the moment. kaya you dont need to tell us that. pero, okay lang...i got your point!
but hey...i second the motion about the serena williams. well, talk about being cocky to think na she got herself 1 grand slam title pa lang. ttttssss, she has a lot to prove in terms of her performance.
so you like anna kournikova! have you seen her new commercial yet? haaah, if your a great fan of anna...you should not miss that one! btw, i know she's injured...and badly hurt. i heard pa nga i rumor na she's thinking of retiring already...hope that's a false one though.
[This message has been edited by CJ (edited 10-13-1999).]
hey guys, (esp. to CARAMBA and the Rock)
what you heard about the latest rumor about Liz Hurley and Andre Agassi is true! listen to this...LIZ HURLEY WOULD DUMP HUGH GRANT PROVIDED THAT ANDRE ACKNOWLEDGES HER MOVES ON HIM!
well, i guess Elizabeth Hurley is more than crazy over Andre since she is willing to such a thing against her long-time boyfriend. she even stated that if Hugh can fool around, she has the right to do the same thing too. (wow! grabe ang statement noh?)
Liz has been seen in numerous ocassions watching tennis matches of Andre. Last July in Wimbledon, England...she came to see the Finals. news say that she asked her manager to personally contact Andre for her and ask him to spend some time with her while she's in England. Andre on the other hand, being a real gentlemen did Liz's favor. he even jotted Liz's name down on his special guests list so that Liz can seat on the player's box during the Finals of the said event.
basically, it has been Liz who is flirting and putting the moves on Andre. like she invited him to dinner a few times in England. but the sad thing is...Andre said (when he's not even dating Steffi yet) that nothing will happen between the two of them, since she is already committed. he has no plans of ruining what Liz and Hugh has got going for the last years.
it's funny though because its like a crazy and weird love triangle going on between them (steffi, andre and liz). picture this...Liz is drop dead crazy over Andre and Andre is really going nuts for Steffi. para silang naghahabulan...mas lamang lang si Steffi (coz she has nothing to lose!). anyway, it's a good thing that Andre has Steffi already...bad news for Liz though!
nice yung story noh? hmmmm, pretty intriguing!!!

To caramba,clarisse,mikoid,the rock,cj..
-whats wrong with martina hingis? her attitude? as far as i know, ok naman sya off court. parati syang nakasmile kahit kanino and muka naman syang friendly. i even got to eat lunch with martina hingis pero may buhok sa kilikili!!!! hehehe. pero im serious she's nice te everyone. mas mayabang pa nga si anna kournikova eh. i remember sa usopen sa new york sa players lounge talagang binabandera nya yung katawan nya sa lahat.
-about the ranking next year, di ba sa dami ng atp points yung ranking?? yup!! pero kung madami kang points pero konting tournament lang sasalihan mo, this will affect your ranking. gets? so next year yung ranking ibebase nila sa points and number of tournaments played. this includes the four grandslam tournaments and challengers.

yup, Andre won with 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. ang ganda nung game grabe! i was completely overwhelmed sa comeback ni Andre...imagine from 3-3, nakuha nya yung 2nd set. tapos he led the 3rd set 5-0. bad trip nga eh coz na habol pa sya ni Nicolas. 2 times na double match point nawala sa kanya. haaaay...anyway, its a good thing he won! ang saya kaya.
btw, i even saw Steffi with Brad Gilbert! she was pretty as usual...medyo nervous during the 1st two sets tapos nung 3rd set syempre all smiles na. hehehe... :) it was really a nice sight!

andre d. marat 76(1) 62 46 64
can't wait to watch the match later!
the final of Paris Open was indeed a nice match...nice yung game nila. you can see Andre was kinda nervous because Marat defeated him at the 1st round of the 98 French Open. actually, tie sila sa series 1-1. Andre, on the other hand defeated him on Davis Cup.
Anyway, for most of the time you can see that the two are exchanging powerful strokes (either backhand or forehand). but Andre's forehand isnt that reliable unlike his backhand (maybe Steffi should give him a lesson pa with his forehand...afterall, she's known to be Fraulein Forehand). Marat naman who is 19 delivered a great game...i think lagpas 16 yung aces nya. pero syempre, Andre's determination to win prevailed. as usual, Steffi was there to give her support. haaaay...$2.5 M richer na naman si Andre. though, im really happy for him! :) he deserves it naman eh. good job!
clarisse,
i just bought a Tennis Magazine and it said there na Anna and Sergei is still together. ayan, safe ka na ulit kay Carlos mo. at saka dont worry, feeling ko naman false rumor lang yun. if ever kasi, everybody in the tennis world is talking about it already. and, ang bad naman ni Anna kung gagawin nya yun. ang mean nya ha! basta, i'll give you na lang updates about Carlos (or Anna if you like).

As far as Asians go, Leander Paes is pretty good too. He's got excellent tenacity, and covers the court in an almost Chang-like fashion.
He took a younger Agassi to 5-setters in big-ticket events like the Aussie Open. Along with Mahesh Bhupathi, he's a number-one ranked doubles players.

mikoid,
si leander paes matagal na yan sa tour. si mahesh bhupati din. both went to manila in 95 pero natalo. and he's old na. imagine this na lang, paradorn srichaphan is 20 pa lang and he's in the top 120 in the world. paes never made it to quarters or semis sa singles( except that he won wimbledon juniors) (Felix Barrientos by the way reached the semifinals in juniors in 89) paradorn reached semis in heineken open in singapore at the age of 20. he almost beat courier last year too. see whats gonna happen in aussie open!

Martina Hingis is the BEST!!!!
At walang aangal!!!!
i must admit that Martina has both looks and skills, in fact my sister adores her...
...but to be honest, I DONT!!! she still needs to grow up and be mature in terms of her actions. if she would be that way in the near future...i may learn to like her.

i love the way Hingis plays. She holds the record na youngest Aussie Open champion... Ang galing kase... she's so young...dami na agad achievements...
Kaya lang...pag-alam na niyang she's gonna lose the match...pinapapangit na nya yung game nya...pero sayang talaga yung Aus Open... 1 big mistake yung na-out nya yung ball... tuloy nagkachance pa si Capriati.
