share ko lang......
Mariel Daniella Sophia, nagpaluha kina Sharon at Kiko
"Mares! She’s here! Mariel Daniella Sophia, born 6:30 AM, Sept. 2, 2004. Weight 8.2 lbs., 51 cm. lenght. By c-section. Mommy is now asleep. No visitors."

Kulit Co. : Secretary in the City
Updated 06:02pm (Mla time) Sept 03, 2004

Inquirer News Service
Editor's Note: Published on page D1 of the September 4, 2004 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer
SO FAR, it has been hard work and great fun working for the TV company Propager, which made the intelligent decision (I need to stress that) to hire me as their secretary. My sked had been changed to a 10 to 6 (although "9 to 5" sounds better). I work hard (not), make a lot of phone calls to editors of important channels, write a lot of e-mails, put on lots of different accents (including Mauritian) and take a lot of coffee breaks (yes, Starbucks is finally in France). Work is going well, especially because of the very helpful advice from some of the greatest friends in the world who bother to pull me out of the darkness! I am pretty successful because of those who share some wisdom and those who share what they pretend is wisdom, and also those who are honest enough not to share any wisdom because they frankly do not feel that they have any.
The other day, I was receiving order forms from around the globe. Our reports are always free of cost and free of broadcasting restrictions for the networks we contact because we are funded by the EC. Cool, huh?
Well... to make the story a bit more interesting, I was assigned countries like Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Germany and Ireland. I helped to catch up on some calls on the evening shift, calls that involved US channels such as CNN, the Discovery Channel and ABC, as well as CBS. Trip!!!
In my Europe list there was also Cosmopolitan Spain and I talked to an editor-in-chief about our terrorism report and he was, like, "Well, it's great because you see, we focus only on lovely things, we focus on human relations and sex."
Also, it's interesting 'coz the US channels have this way of being extra meticulous about details including, "Where is the tape now, as we speak?" Ngeks. Pero standards talaga nila kakaiba! Sometimes the person you'd just been talking to on the phone, biglang maririnig mo sa radio (the sounds they play when they put you on hold) when calling a different channel. Weird talaga ha ha! Sa list ko naman, funny sometimes. I called a channel and the guy said this to me: "Speak only Slovak."
My darling babes... do you speak Slovak?

The 15 Best Filipino Actresses of All Time
FUNFARE by Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 09/04/2004
http://www.philstar.com/philstar/main/20040904/images/ent1.jpg
Of course, you have your own choices and so have I. As you go over the list of The 15 Best Filipino Actresses of All Time, drawn up by the Directors’ Guild of the Philippines Inc. (DGPI) through its president Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, as requested by Yes! magazine editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon, you will surely wonder how come this or that actress isn’t on the list when she was memorable in this or that movie.
Well, as I’ve said, you have your own list and Yes! magazine and the DGPI have their own.
The criteria: The candidate’s choice of films; the impact, importance and legacy of her performance in these films; the consistency of excellence in those portrayals; and other important services to cinema in particular and to society in general.
The DGPI officers who sat as board of judges included Joel Lamangan, chairman; Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, president; Emmanuel Borlaza, vice-president; Joey Romero, secretary; Mel Chionglo, treasurer; and Erik Matti, Maryo J. delos Reyes and Romy Suzara, board members.
Here’s the Honor Roll (and some of the actresses’ memorable films), in alphabetical order (for the complete coverage, see the September issue of Yes! magazine):
1. Gina Alajar (Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim, Orapronobis, Salome, Brutal and Moral)
2. Nora Aunor (Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo; Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos; Bona; Bulaklak sa City Jail; Condemned; Merika; Andrea, Paano Ba Maging Ina?; Ina Ka ng Anak Mo; Sidhi, Bakit May Kahapon Pa?; and The Flor Contemplacion Story)
3. Nida Blanca (Korea, Waray-Waray, Batanguena, Luneta, Ikaw Kasi, Miguelito and Sana Pagibig Na)
4. Sharon Cuneta (Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?, Bukas Luluhod ang Mga Tala, Pasan Ko ang Daigdig and Madrasta)
5. Rita Gomez (Reyna Bandida, Ganid sa Laman, Tatlong Magdalena, Avenida Boy, Pagdating sa Dulo and Larawan, the stage play)
6. Hilda Koronel (Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising, Angela Markado, Nagsimula sa Puso, Tanging Yaman and Crying Ladies)
7. Elizabeth Oropesa (Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa; Lumapit, Lumayo ang Umaga; Nunal sa Tubig; and Bulaklak ng Maynila)
8. Cherry Pie Picache (Sibak, Paraisong Parisukat and Bridal Shower)
9. Lolita Rodriguez (Gilda, Sapagkat Kami’y Tao Lamang, Tubog sa Ginto and Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang)
10. Gloria Romero (Dalagang Ilokana, Palaboy, Mga Anak sa Pagkakasala, Beloved, Eternally and Tanging Yaman)
11. Rosa Rosal (Anak Dalita, Badjao and Biyaya ng Lupa)
12. Vilma Santos (Burlesk Queen, Relasyon, Broken Marriage, Ikaw ay Akin, Miss X, Sister Stella L., Hahamakin ang Lahat, The Dolzura Cortez Story, Dekada ’70 and Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa?)
13. Charito Solis (Kundiman ng Lahi; Angustia; Malvarosa; Igorota; El Filibusterismo; Ina, Kapatid, Anak; City After Dark; Kisapmata; and Playgirl)
14. Maricel Soriano (Galawgaw, Pabling, Hinugot sa Langit, Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit, Ikaw Pa lang ang Minahal, Dahas, Mila, Mano Po and Abot-Kamay ang Pangarap)
15. Lorna Tolentino (Moral, Aliw, Maging Akin Ka Lamang, Luksong Tinik, Narito ang Puso Ko and Mano Po 2)

At do'n sa live concert CD ni Lea Salonga, Songs From Home, also from BMG, there's a long tribute to Sharon Cuneta, a medley of her classic songs. (Siya lang ang solo female singer na binigyan ng gano'ng importansya. Ka-level ni Basil Valdez!)
Sana may spiels dahil ang ganda ng mga sinabi ni Lea about Mega.
M well na Geczar. Or trying to be well.
Really wanted to join you last Fri nite. But didn't want to make hawa Krashe.
Baka ako pa ang maging dahilan nang pagkaka-quarantine niya sa country where she is going.
Ma-TV Patrol pa siya.
Maybe next time, we can get together again.
Am hoping soon.
Had to go back to work today kasi my clients are getting antsy (since last Thurs. pa nga, been flooded with txt messages).
Hay naku!
So had to work and buy new pillows because my old ones are fit to be condemned (saw that much on Oprah).
If there's one thing positive about being ill is that it forced me to take a much-needed and much-deserved vacation.
At least for two days.
And tonite, farewell episode ng Sex and the City sa Wowow.
Am also happy and thankful when I heard that Sharon and Baby Miel are doing well, Lookalikes pa raw accdg to Sen. Kiko.
Ang cute nga ni Sen. Kiko sa TV Patrol, when he shared this info to the public.
Nagkatotoo ang sonogram/ultrasound photo. Kamukha talaga ni Shawie si Baby Mariel. The minute I saw the profile, that was my reaction.
Megang Mega!
Lastly, thank you Geczar for posting the SHE mag story on Sen. Kiko and Frankie. It will be out next week, available in Filbar's, National Bookstore and other major magazine outlets.
If all goes well, nasa-cover siguro sila (inset sa main cover na si Sheryn Regis).
Enjoy!
Napahaba 'ata dahil I haven't been posting since Wed, since getting sick.
Anyway, enjoy the rest of the weekend!

'Crying Ladies' is RP entry to next year's Oscars
Updated 00:56am (Mla time) Sept 05, 2004
By Leah Salterio
Inquirer News Service
Editor's Note: Published on page A2-1 of the September 5, 2004 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
UNITEL Pictures' "Crying Ladies," starring Sharon Cuneta and directed by Mark Meily, has been chosen as the Philippine entry to the Oscars' best foreign language film category next year.
Producer Tony Gloria last Aug. 31 received a letter from the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) informing him of the selection of "Crying Ladies" for the Oscar derby. The FAP selects the official Philippine entry in the Academy Awards.
The letter, signed by FAP director general Leo Martinez, said "Crying Ladies" was picked by the body's selection committee. The film should be submitted with English subtitles to the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ampas), the organization which hands out the Oscars, not later than Oct. 1.
"We are very happy and privileged that 'Crying Ladies' has been chosen as the country's entry in the Oscars," Gloria told Inquirer Entertainment in a phone interview last Friday. "Our film is the country's best bet to the Oscars and we are competing with the best from around the world. I know it's a long way from landing as one of the finalists, but to be selected is already an honor in itself."
"Crying Ladies," Meily's directorial debut, was Unitel Pictures' official entry in last December's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), where it bagged five major awards, including best picture.
Gloria said "Crying Ladies" is now being shown in the Montreal Film Festival's Asian Cinema category, where it is also nominated for the audience award and for first-time film director. The film has been subtitled in English.
"Mark Meily is now in Montreal and he said there's a good crowd watching the film, with lots of foreigners," Gloria offered.
Pusan festival
Filmed with a budget of P20 million, "Crying Ladies" has grossed P65 million in the Philippines alone. Through Gloria's marketing and distribution arm, Unico Entertainment, the film has made the rounds of the commercial exhibition circuit in the United States, where it earned good reviews.
At the MMFF last December, "Crying Ladies" also bagged the awards for best supporting actress for Hilda Koronel, best supporting actor for Eric Quizon, best child actor for Julio Pacheco and best director for Meily.
So far, no Philippine film has made it to the finals in the Oscar best foreign language film category. Other local films which have been entered in the category are Tikoy Aguiluz's "Segurista" (1997), Gil Portes' "Gatas . . . Sa Dibdib ng Kaaway" (1999), "Markova: Comfort Gay" (2000), "Saranggola" (2001) and "Mga Munting Tinig" (2003), Marilou Diaz-Abaya's "Sa Pusod ng Dagat" (1998) and Chito Roño's "Dekada '70" (2002).
Prior to the FAP selection of "Crying Ladies" for the Oscars, Unitel Pictures' upcoming film, "Santa-Santita," was invited to the 9th Pusan International Film Festival in Korea, where it will be shown in the Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP).
In a letter to Gloria, festival organizers explained that the PPP is a project market for new Asian films. It also allows filmmakers to find co-financiers or co-producers. Last year, more than a thousand professionals from over 35 countries attended the more than 500 meetings in the PPP.
P25 million
Unitel's "Santa-Santita," directed by Laurice Guillen, is a modern Magdalene story based on Jerry Gracio's screenplay which won in the Film Foundation of the Philippines' scriptwriting competition four years ago. Guillen bought the rights to the winning script.
"Santa-Santita" is one of the 23 "outstanding projects" to be introduced at the PPP in Pusan. Gloria and Guillen are flying to the port city of Pusan, Korea, next month to attend the festival.
Filmed with a budget of P25 million, "Santa-Santita" stars Angelica Panganiban, who was chosen after a very long search. The other two main stars are Jericho Rosales as the devilish young man and Johnny Delgado as a troubled priest.
The indie producer said "Santa-Santita" is the first Philippine movie to be shot in Varicam-HD, similar to Michael Mann's "Collateral," which stars Tom Cruise. HD was also the same technique used in the Milo Olympic commercial, which features Olympic athletes such as basketball star Mon Fernandez, swimmer Christine Jacob, gymnast Bea Lucero and taekwondo champion Monsour del Rosario.
"With HD, you can shoot a scene straight for more than five minutes without fear of running out of film," Gloria explained. "You can do digital grading on the film differently and manipulate the colors in a certain scene, like Angelica's dream sequences. "We do our own post-production because we have the capability and the equipment," he added.
November playdate
"Santa-Santita," which is now in the post-production stage, could have been one of the official entries in the 2004 MMFF in December. However, Gloria decided not to field any entries this year and to instead show the film on an earlier playdate in November.
"Santa-Santita" follows Guillen's critically acclaimed and award-winning films like "Tanging Yaman" in 2000 and "American Adobo," also produced by Gloria, in 2002.
After "Santa-Santita," Unitel will produce Meily's "Penitencia Republic" starring Robin Padilla, and the Dolphy movie, "Comedy King," to be directed by Jun Reyes and co-produced with megastar Sharon Cuneta.
Gloria is also handling the worldwide distribution of Maryo J. de los Reyes' award-winning "Magnifico" and Ramona Diaz's "Imelda," the documentary on the former first lady.
Gloria said "Imelda" grossed $300,000 (P16.5 million) in Manila alone. The documentary is set to be shown in Singapore next month.
It was also bought by theater art houses in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, according to Gloria.

soo true!! i will never be without SHARON in my system, wherever, whatever it takes...i'm gonna stick by her, i LOVE her soo! & the BEST thing that has come out of this adoration? I am able to express myself more, to show love & appreciation without hesitation, to be sincere in my actions, the way she is. I have learned to choose my battles wisely & 'try' always to propagate goodness. Sharon, with all da trappings in show business, with da fame, wealth & multimedia success, with all d adoration, but amidst people with bad intentions & insinuations, has remained a loving, decent, down-to-earth, positive, inspiring, grounded human being. I admire her for da person that she is, I am proud to know her, she inspires me to be a better person.

:-D
Hi!!
can i butt in here?? well we missed you talga Bananay!hope you recovered na, it wasn't da same, laughing without you--- but we enjoyed, nonetheless! lalo na yung part about da cups. told u abt da names dba? heheh. i can't wait for your article, a must have na naman yon! pero late na ko...hmp. ma-mimiss kong makipagunahan sa newstands at maghanap ng mega news sa powerBooks... P.S. saw Sex& the City, too. glad they went back together, kileg! da ending was mushy, da soundtrack must be good, ang ganda ng songs eh.

Hi to All
Kanina I was trying to watch both S-Files and The Buzz.. I wanted to see if they would show a feature on Sharons giving Birth.. Well nainis naman ako kay Mr.Gomez. Sabi niya sana daw pinakita yng baby para makita kung ano ang hitsura ng mata, ilong . As in diniin ang pagkasabi, sabay tawa ng tatlo....(i think you can guess what he was trying to imply). ... Buti pa si Kris, (even if I don't like her) she still had something good to say . Sabi niya ang gaganda daw pumili ni sharon ng pangalan ng mga anak niya..
Sana sagutin na lang niya ang blind item about his wife being a KLEPTO.:bash: Medyo masama ang ugali niya.

Here's what was the reaction of Richard, Pia and Paolo after they featured Sharon's giving birth to Miel (more or less):
Richard: Sana ipinakita yung baby para makita natin kung sino ang mamukha
Pia: I am sure si Frankie, ang cute cute ni Frankie
Paolo: Usually ang tanong pag may nanganganak, sino ang kamukha, ang ilong, mata kanino?

Hi Bananay! How are you now? Yeah, see you soon! :)
Guess what, Bananay. Lorie and I surprised Krashe by going to their house this afternoon and sent her off to the airport. Before going to the airport, we went with her to the parlor. She had a haircut and her nails done.
We rode together with her family in going to the airport. When we were saying goodbyes, Krashe cried. I was teary-eyed too but controlled my tears. Her whole family was there so I was shy. He he he, si geczar, nahiya?
We will definitely miss her. I just hope she will have an internet access soon.
We gifted her a collage of pictures with the Mega family and Sharonians. You were included there coz the picture in Dampa was there. Her dad told us that he photocopied the collage because he also wants a copy. Her Mom was so amazed na ang dami nung pictures. Kelan daw yun? He he he, buko na ba si Krashe? Cute naman kasi. Lorie and I also made a copy for ourselves. Majority naman of the pics eh nandun kami.
Just post here, email me or text me if the SHE mag is already out.

Ok lang naman siguro to make a thread but I think di na muna kailangan since she is not active in showbiz. Usually, we see her if her mom or dad has a tv appearance and hindi palagi. Wala namang update about her that is related to showbiz. Ok na muna siguro dito sa thread ni Sharon. Any news about her naman is related to her mom or dad. Baka ang post natin eh up ko lang ang thread. Yung kay KC nga, nagiging active lang pag nandito siya or kung may kulit co article. Besides, may yahoogroup na si Frankie. Ok na muna siguro yon.

'Crying Ladies' is RP entry to next year's Oscars

The 15 Best Filipino Actresses of All Time
FUNFARE by Ricardo F. Lo

Naku , mukhang masyado akong high blood today... pahinga na nga muna:p
Good night to all ;)
Cool lang tayo firemonkey. I agree with you firemonkey!
Di man lang hiniwalay.

People's Tonight
Puno na ang schedule ng young star for the next couple of months. Tatlo ang regular shows niya sa Dos at five days na ang kinakain nito sa linggo niya.
May promo at rehearsals pa ang bagets. Ang hindi lang niya magawa ngayon ay mag-out-of-town shows.
In between, nag-shoot pa si Sandara ng TV commercials. Di lang isang commercial ang sinasabi namin, kundi lima. Of course, bawal pang banggitin ang pangalan ng mga produkto.
But at least, we can mention kung anong klase
ng produkto ang ilan dito. May facial wash, shampoo at sanitary napkin.
Si Sandara na nga ang young version ng Megastar Sharon Cuneta pagdating sa paramihan ng TV commercials.
******33
pero i bet si KC sana ang younger version ni Sharon kung gusto niyang mag full time sa showbiz at tanggapin lahat ng offer sa kanya :)

Tama ka, firemonkey. Wala masyadong coverage si Miel. Siyempre nung si KC ipinanganak, both parents are from showbiz so talagang lahat eh curious how KC looks like. Plus, in their batch, si Sharon and Gabby and unang kinasal na loveteam kaya talagang gustong makita si KC nang lahat.
Pero hayaan na lang natin na magpahinga muna si Sharon and palakihin muna natin si Miel. Masyadong mahirap ang pregnancy niya kaya let us give her the time to rest and recover and take care of Baby Miel.
I am sure, ipapakita rin sa atin yan soon! Di naman madamot si Sharon. Si Frankie was shown a few weeks after sa show niya.
Kaya lang, wala siyang show ngayon so saan kaya unang ipapakita? Baka sa coverage na ng binyag ni Miel :)

Those who have the time to drop by SM Megamall tonight, it will be available at the premiere night of 13 Going 30 at Cinema 10. I think they will sell magazines there tonight.
It's also available in all Filbar's outlets, National Bookstore branches and other major magazine stands.

It's also available in all Filbar's outlets, National Bookstore branches and other major magazine stands.
Many thanks.

Make-up secrets of the stars
Celebrity World
Crispina Belen
09/12/04
Fanny Serrano has been in the business of servicing the stars (with her make-up and hairstyle expertise) for many years now and he should know every one of them by heart by now, including their secrets, personal and otherwise.
But of course, Fanny aptly dubbed the “make-up guru to the stars” (and who came out last year with her own line of cosmetic products and just recently with the first ever instructional make-up video in the Philippines called “Touch,” produced by Viva Video) would only talk about the stars’ secrets in make-up and hairstyle, since these are the most visible in them. Their personal secrets are theirs alone, although sometimes these are written about, making for juicy and interesting fodder to gossip columns.
Now, let’s get to the make-up secrets of the stars, according to the make-up guru himself. Among the most meticulous stars Fanny has done make-up on is Mayor Vilma Santos. “Palibhasa, she knows how to apply make-up herself,” Fanny said. “If no make-up artist is around, Vilma can do it herself.
She especially wants to put on her eyebrows. She’s very good at it, parang natural. Kasi this is what she really wants to achieve sa make-up niya: Natural na parang walang make-up.”
If Vilma knows the art of make-up, it’s because she’s been in the business since she was 9. She has learned everything about life and showbiz matters through the years. Her wisdom shows beyond the realms of showbiz though, for she has also penetrated politicians very successfully at that.
Lorna Tolentino is another showbiz personality who knows how to apply her own make-up with finesse, Fanny said. Like Vilma, LT participates in her make-up process. Unlike Sharon Cuneta who lets him do whatever he wants on her, LT watches the step-by-step process so now she knows how to apply it on herself without difficulty.
“Kay Sharon, I deliberately do things na mali para mapansin niya.” Amy Austria is another actress who knows how to do her own make-up, Fanny said. “If she sees that I am very busy, siya na mismo ang mag-make-up sa sarili niya. Tama naman ang ginagawa niya, and when people see her and say ‘ang ganda ng make-up mo, si Fanny Serrano yan ano?’ Ang sagot naman niya: ‘Hindi, ako ang gumawa nyan.”
Fanny said he’d rather hear people say about her stars: “Ang ganda mo,” hindi “Ang ganda ng make-up mo.” Because I want people to notice how beautiful the star is, na na-enhanced lang ng make-up ang beauty niya.”
Former Miss Philippines Charlene Gonzalez, now Mrs. Aga Muhlach, is another showbiz personality who totally depends on her make-up artist. “Pero kahit hindi siya mag-make-up maganda pa rin siya,” Fanny said. “At saka si Aga kasi, as much as possible ayaw niyang magmake-up si Charlene. Natural beauty ang gusto niya sa asawa niya.”
Fanny stressed the fact that the stars should know how to put on their own make-ups. “When they go abroad to perform, not all the producers there would give them a make-up artist or hairstylist. So they should be prepared to do their own make-ups all the time...”
Incidentally, Fanny’s make-up video features him in a step by step guide to perfect make-up for everybody concerned with putting their best faces forward for various occasions. Fanny did not think twice about sharing his expertise. “It was just like I was doing the make-up of the stars. There is no difference. It’s total sharing for me,” he said.
The video also tells an inspiring story of what led Fanny to pursue a career in beauty. It offers a glimpse of his humble beginnings and of how his admiration for screen goddesses of the past inspired him to pick up the brush, powder and other tools with which he reached the enviable stature he now enjoys as the country’s beauty expert.
Serrano brings to “Touch” more than 30 years of experience as the premiere hair and make-up stylist to the stars. His clientele boasts of the most beautiful faces in the Philippine showbusiness. He is also a well–known couturier, wedding consultant, interior designer and part time actor who has won raves for his work on the stage, films and television. He recently launched his own line of Fanny Serrano by F21 cosmetics.

Crying Ladies
is the first Filipino feature film to use the new VISION2 stock. It marks the first feature-length production for Unitel Pictures, a Philippines-based commercial production house.
Crying Ladies, as the title suggests, is the story of three women who, for different reasons, become professional funeral criers. Stella is an ex-prisoner struggling to gain custody of her son from her ex-husband. In order to prove that she can be a good mother with a stable job, Stella convinces her friend Doray, an ex-B-movie actress, to join her as a funeral crier. A third friend, Choleng, joins Stella and Doray in their new-found profession, after being told by a priest that an act of charity will clean her soul.
A dying tradition
First-time feature film director Mark Meily and cinematographer Lee Meily, whose previous feature film credits include Tanging Yaman and American Adobo, were attracted to the project’s issues of maternal love, cultural assimilation and the fact that funeral crying is both figuratively and literally a dying tradition. “I choose scripts that inspire me on a personal level,” confirms Lee Meily. “During pre-production, Mark and I always talk about the visual style that will best translate the emotions in the script. For Crying Ladies, we were very precise in defining how the elements of lighting, blocking and production design worked as visual cues for the emotional considerations of each scene.” Director Mark Meily adds, “it was great fun giving life to the characters. Every one of them has a back-story that guided Lee and I in the choice of colors and personal tastes for each character, even for the dead man!”
Much of Crying Ladies is set indoors, with sets constructed on a sound stage to ensure the filmmakers’ had control over their characters’ environments. “The house of each character was significant in how they are presented on-screen,” says Lee Meily. “Stella’s house, for example, has a blue-greenish hue and is lit in a soft top-light, to highlight her fleeting character, even her household items are plastic, adding to the transience of her existence.”

The director and cinematographer carefully prepared for shooting the interiors by photographing the sets with stand-ins to chart precise camera and lens positions. During the pre-production period for Crying Ladies, Kodak had launched Kodak VISION2 500T 5218. Lee Meily decided to use the new stock after testing revealed that it would provide the look the filmmakers were after.
“During the tests, we shot parts of each scene, compared the stocks and the VISION2 gave us what we wanted in terms of its latitude, granularity and low colour saturation,” reports Lee Meily. “Crying Ladies is the first Filipino feature film to use the new VISION2 stock and its color rendition in the low-key scenes was very good.” For exteriors in Manila’s Chinatown district, Meily used Kodak Vision 200T 5274. “I like its fine granularity and it cuts well with the VISION2 stock,” reports the cinematographer.
Meily lit the interior sets with minimum amount of lighting units, preferring to utilise the maximum number of set-ups. “Kinoflos were the workhorse for all the interior scenes,” says the cinematographer.

Warm, subdued colors
Many of the locations, such as the lead character’s house and the funeral, required a cramped, almost claustrophobic feel and accordingly Meily used a longer lens such as 85mm and 135mm. To visually distinguish the funeral scenes from the rest of the film, the cinematographer used a combination of Zeiss Ultra Primes and tobacco filtration, whereas the other scenes were shot using Zeiss Super Speeds. “The funeral was the heart of the narrative. We wanted warm but not yellow, subdued colors,” Meily explains. “The look was completed in collaboration with our excellent production design team.”
The filmmakers had several challenges throughout the 22-day shoot, including maintaining lighting continuity throughout the turbulent weather of the rainy season. However, the Meilys are quick to point out that “excellent planning and pre-production made this shoot a fun one. I’ve never worked with such an enthusiastic team of people before,” declares Mark.
