The places goodgal mentioned don't require money at all to visit. If you have kids, try riding a ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo. It's been a long time since I've been to that zoo (or Oz for that matter) and all I can remember is riding that cable car, but I do remember having loads of fun though.
