Echo deserves that award more than anybody in the category.

CINDY Kurleto said she had to "hide, lie and deny" her relationship with Jericho Rosales for a year to protect his love team with Kristine Hermosa.

Cindy, Filipino-Austrian commercial model, actress and ex-girlfriend of Jericho, said she also lost millions of pesos in endorsement contracts because he was not allowed to appear with her in commercials.

She couldn't even attend Jericho's birthday party last year because talent managers said she couldn't be in the same party with Kristine, her boyfriend's partner in the movies, according to Cindy.

"To be Echo's girlfriend means it's OK for everyone to kick your *** even though they know that you don't have any fault," Cindy said during last Friday's press conference for her instructional VCD, "Curves." Echo-Jericho's nickname-and Cindy met on the set of the movie "Ngayong
Nandito Ka," shown in February 2003. He was the lead star along with his love team partner, Kristine Hermosa, and Cindy played the other woman in the story. As fate would have it, the leading man and the other woman fell for each other.



The threat

Last Friday, Cindy clarified that Jericho and Kristine were no longer together when she and Echo became an item. "Kristine's sister and even Jericho himself have stated that fact," she said.

But all along, Cindy said, she was painted as the threat to the relationship of Jericho and Kristine, who shot to fame as lovers Angelo and Yna in the defunct soap opera, Pangako sa 'Yo." Aside from "Ngayong Nandito Ka," Echo and Kristine also starred in the hit movies "Forevermore" and "Trip."

"When I entered the picture, I knew exactly what my part was and I kept it," said Cindy. "I was hiding, lying and denying. And I hate lying. I would feel dirty after lying. He'd tell me that after three months, I wouldn't have to lie. Three months became six months and six months became a year. He wasn't bombarded by reporters, I was. He was protected by Talent Center."

Cindy said ABS-CBN's Talent Center, which manages the careers of the network's talents like Jericho and Kristine, didn't want her to be with Jericho.

"When I entered ABS-CBN (as one of the hosts of the noontime TV show 'MTB'), there were offers to do shows and movies, but after they learned about me and Echo, the offers were all gone. The bosses would call him for one-on-one meetings and the topic was, yeah, 'Don't be with that girl.'



Sacrifices

Cindy said she sacrificed a lot to keep the relationship together. When Jericho celebrated his birthday last year, she conceptualized a theme party for him, she said. She asked her father, her friends who were visiting from Vienna, and her Filipino friends to dress up in '50s fashion for Jericho's party, but they were discouraged from going to the party, she said.

"Suddenly there was a call from Echo," she recounted. "He had talked to Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) who said it wasn't possible for Kristine and Cindy to be in the same party where there would be cameras. I had to tell my father and my best friends that I couldn't go to the party of my own boyfriend."

Cindy claimed that Talent Center rejected offers for her and Jericho to endorse products. She said Jericho was supposed to be with her in the ads for Mendrez, a shoe line; Piolo Pascual took his place. She said she and Jericho were supposed to endorse San Miguel; instead, he pitched for Pepsi.

Cindy said she lost millions in talent fees because Talent Center wouldn't let Jericho appear with her in commercials.

"They've been telling Echo that if he's not in a love team, he wouldn't be as successful," said Cindy.

"I said, 'No, you'll be more successful in the long run because people will see you as your own person.' Now his career is up after he left the (Jericho-Kristine) love team."

Reconciliation?

When Jericho and Kristine's second soap opera, "Sana'y Wala nang Wakas," wrapped up a few months ago, they announced that they were temporarily shelving their love team. Jericho is in the new Laurice Guillen film, "Santa-Santita" and in "Lihim," which also stars Claudine Barretto and Diether Ocampo, who is now Kristine's boyfriend.

Cindy said she has started talking about Jericho and their relationship because Jericho himself has been vocal about her lately. There have been reports of Jericho's visits to the set of the GMA 7 soap opera, "Forever in My Heart," where Cindy is a mainstay, and that he is trying to win her back.

She said she and Jericho were together for a year and four months and broke up in March. But they remain friends, and he has even become her acting coach, she said, helping her with her Filipino lines in the soap.

German is Cindy's first language. She studied hotel and restaurant management but her real passion is dancing, she said. Her "Curves" video is a fusion of aerobics and sensual dancing.

Cindy made it clear that a reconciliation with Jericho is still up in the air. "Of course, I still love him," she maintained. "But it's not fair that (the sacrifices) all rested on my shoulder. My dad said, 'I know you love him so much but think it over because if he doesn't stand up for you now, he might not stand up for you ever.' He said that a man who can't stand up for his girl is not a man.
