Guillen casts Angelica and Jericho against type

LEAVE it to Laurice Guillen to flesh out another compelling female character. With her unique insight and unquestionable understanding of complex women, she has given life and depth to award-winning roles such as her characters in the movie "Sister Stella L." and stage play "A Streetcar Named Desire." She has also put to the screen as director the ill-fated Salome and Dolzura Cortez. After her award-winning "Tanging Yaman" and the US-made "American Adobo," she tells a woman's story of redemption that is set in the heart of Manila in "Santa-Santita."

In her new movie for Unitel Pictures, Guillen directs ingénue Angelica Panganiban, as a girl who grows up in Quiapo, reared by her mom, a tagadasal. When her mother dies, she decides to take on the "job." But something happens to her, or more accurately, to the people she prays for. Their prayers are granted, and this leaves the skeptical in her baffled. "She knows the prayer but she does not pray by heart. She just memorizes them but she's not into them. When the petitions are granted, she knows it was not because of her," Guillens relates.

It is an intriguing role and, Guillen assures, Panganiban was able to deliver. The 17-year-old, whose erstwhile projects were teenybopper flicks, landed the role after auditioning for it.

"I was looking for someone who can be a 'santa,' quite young and also medyo maldita ang dating, kasi nga santa-santita. I wanted somebody new for the part, preferably dapat 'di pa nag-bo-bold o nag-lo-love scene," says Guillen.

"I wanted someone who was not just sexy but a young actress who could act, like a Hilda Koronel nuong araw na trese pa lang pero marunong umarte."

'She wanted change'

She says she was surprised when she saw Angelica with the other stars from the Talent Center where the last audition was held. "I knew her from before but I hadn't seem her for a long time," recalls Guillen. "Nag-iba na itsura nya. She was sexy. So I called back two of those who auditioned but we chose her. Matapang siya. She had that hunger. She wanted change."

The role requires some baring so Guillen had to confer with Angelica's mom.

"Since minor siya, I talked to her mom and because Angelica really wanted it, pumayag ang mother niya," relates Guillen. She also assured Angelica's mother about how she plans to handle her daughter's delicate scenes."

"There is a bed scene, a love scene between Angelica and Jericho. But I told her mom I will not show maseselang bahagi ng katawan. Walang pumping, but there's passion."

Matinee idol Jericho, who always gets the girl in movies and TV, goes against type. Guillen handpicked him for the role of the charming con man who seduces Angelica."I had a great time working with him in 'Tanging Yaman' so he did not have to audition for the part."

Even before shooting, says Guillen, she already imagined how her actors will look together. Angelica and Jericho, she notes, have a good on screen chemistry.

Her husband, much-awarded actor Johnny Delgado, plays the role of a problematic priest who has to contend with his own demons.

Drama and spirituality

There may be a love angle, but the movie, says Guillen, plays on two levels: drama and spirituality. Angelica's character is redeemed while Jericho's charming seducer who turns murderer in the movie, meets his just deserts.

Being situated in Quaipo, it is not surprising that the movie's milieu is as much a part of the story as the characters. Quaipo, where paradoxes abound, provided Guillen a lot of interesting materials for the film, aside from being a very vibrant backdrop.

"It's an environment where there is superstition and then there's religion. Sa labas may mga manghuhula, masahista, pickpocket, mga nagbebenta ng pampalaglag, mga nagbebenta ng kandila for kulam.... I was very interested in that milieu."

But shooting in that environment was a different story. Guillen and her crew were allowed only a maximum of three hours, from 1 to 4 p.m., to shoot inside the Quiapo church. They were using digital camera and live sound, but the time constraint and the crowd made the shooting condition difficult.

"Santa-Santita," a first prize winner in the Film Development Foundation script writing contest, is slated for simultaneous showing here and in the US in November.

"Unitel producer Tony Gloria wants it to have a simultaneous release in the U.S. He wants to show it this November because it's too cold in December. Mahina ang movies around that time," says Guillen.

“HUBAD!”

Every time a friend of mine hears this sound bite, she strips.

In short, Jericho Rosales, Echo to his close buddies, has that commanding presence that makes women (and men) take off their clothes, as he did in his latest Pepsi commercial.

With this in mind, I rushed off to Dish last weekend to strip off my inhibitions and greet him a happy birthday.

Earlier that night, he grabbed the mic and proceeded to serenade his guests. After all, the Pepsi boy is part of the singing and flexing sensation, "The Hunks."

Hip, young show biz was in full force in greeting its "it" boy.

The thing about Echo that makes him endearing to industry folks is his down-to-earth and uncomplicated nature. I personally think he is one of glitz biz's best dressed men, able to carry spunky outfits with much panache. Lately I've been seeing him wearing different hats. From a sporty beret to a sassy fedora, he exudes a quiet confidence and easygoing charm that makes him
an idol, both onscreen and offscreen.

Even members of the more elusive surfing community take their hats off to this dude, whose skills in riding the waves are respected.

Catching the wave at his birthday salvo, I spotted Cindy Kurleto right in the middle of the action. TV cameras were all around them, asking if they're back in each other's arms. Since I am not a show biz reporter, I decided to skip the matter and focus my attention on the other telenovela stars present.

Looking around Dish at the ABS-CBN compound, it was quite surreal seeing all these boob tube beauties and beefcakes (the 3 B's) hanging loose in such close quarters. No catfights, no off-cam sneers, no raised eyebrows -- just a bunch of ordinary folks with extraordinary jobs. At least, that's what I saw.

Show biz is often perceived as a shallow pool of talent with a lot of back talk and sucking up. Luckily, there was none of that that night. Maybe this is what he strips them of.

So the next time Echo hollers "Hubad!", dare not resist.

Produced by People and shot mostly is Siargao by award-winning cinematographer Marissa Florendo, the film is due to hit your mobile phone screens this October. It features the hearththrob supposedly in the buff as he engages in one of his favorite activities outside of show biz: surfing.

Not even perhaps an avid fan of that other cola drink will miss Pepsi's newest batch of celebrity endorsers shot by De Leon. Aside from Rosales' billboards, giant images of musician Rico Blanco, model Amanda Griffin and writer-socialite Celine Lopez are now splashed in various parts of the archipelago.

The campaign was inspired by Pepsi's global thrust "Dare for More," which features such foreign acts as Britney Spears, Beyonce, Jerry Yan and David Beckham. BBDO, Pepsi's ad agency in the Philippines, gave it a less "indivualistic" Filipino spin with "Kaya mo 'To."

BBDO based its strategy on the expressed ideas of a cross-section of Filipino respondents age 16-20. "Most young people aspire do to more and young Filipinos are no exception," says, David Guerrero, chair and executive director of BBDO. "But they view their achievements within the context of a group."

Non-traditional spots
BBDO, together with some of the country's leading stylists and makeup artists, collaborated with De Leon on this latest marketing campaign. This time, however, the latter's involvement went beyond the cameras; he was hired by Pepsi as one of its creative consultants.

As part of its commitment to its talents, Pepsi will feature them in a series of non-traditional spots to promote not so much the product as their respective "passions." Other than Rosales's short film, De Leon refushes to divulge future plans for the other three.

Directing isn't new to De Leon. He had done a liquor and and an episode of Coney Reyes' defunct drama show in the 1980s. Such pursuits, however, have taken a backseat in favor of commercial an fashion photography. That is, until Pepsi's offer came along.

"That's one thing I relish about this project," says De Leon. "I can throw in as many ideas as I can. What they do is make them bigger."

The experience is perhaps a cross between commercial and fashion photography on a bigger, more diverse scale. Like all advertising efforts, almost everything is subject to Pepsi's approval. At the same time, however, De Leon has been given more elbow room to pursue his ideas.

"I can't say one is easier than the other," he says of advertising vis-à-vis editorial shoot. "But if you're passionate about one thing, like I am about images, then everything becomes easy."

The campaign is simply too big for one person to do. Thus, De Leon emphasizes the collaborative work that has gone into the shooting of the celebrities, and that still goes on as they take the campaign to the next level.

Brand essence
Each celebrity was shot individually for one whole day at De Leon's studio in Manila. The results are very much a product of the respective stylists and makeup artists who worked on them: Noel Manapat and Jing Monis for Blanco; Luis Espiritu and Juan Sarte for Griffin; and Jenni Epperson and Xeng Zulueta for Lopez.

"These celebrities embody Pepsi's 'Dare for More' philosophy," says Guerrero. "They've achieved and done things beyond what was expected of them. Beyond look and popularity, these people exude the essence of the brand."

Aside from his dramatic pictures, De Leon is also known both in advertising and journalism circles for his temper tantrums. He gives a subject a dressing down if he or she proves to be unprepared or uncooperative. Thankfully, no such thing happened during the Pepsi sessions.

"Everything went smoothly," he says. "It boils down to relationships. Once you've earned the subject's trust, he or she won't think twice about doing anything foryou."

De Leon cites the case of Blanco, who sprained his right leg in a basketball game the day before his shoot. Instead of begging off, he went as scheduled, even jumping before the cameras as if he wasn't in pain.

"I was the one who wanted to postpone it," says De Leon, "but Rico insisted on doing it anyway. We had to spray his leg with pain reliever to keep numb during the shoot.

It's probably no empty boast when De Leon says that, so far, he and his collaborators which includes Carina Escudero, Golda Aguilar, Lee de Leon, Louie Barrios and Bubut Torres, are merely touching the surface. They flew back to Siargao last week with Rosales to shoot final scenes.

"I don't like to set limits," says De Leon. "Since everything I've requested for has been given to my by Pepsi, I can't ask for more."

Obviously, this leaves him and his partners at BBDO plenty of room to dare for more.
