‘Santa-Santita,’ Laurice Guillen’s most difficult movie

It’s my most difficult movie, in terms of subject matter and shooting conditions,” award-winning director Laurice Guillen told us over lunch recently. She was referring to “Santa-Santita,” a Unitel Pictures presentation slated for a November playdate, both here and in the US. Laurice has just finished the movie starring Angelica Panganiban and Jericho Rosales.


Laurice was a judge in a scriptwriting contest conducted by the Film Development Board a few years back. She said she liked “Santa-Santita” so much she decided to buy it. But she didn’t know then that it would win first prize in that contest.

It is recalled that Laurice and husband and fellow actor Johnny Delgado left showbiz several years ago to devote their time to spiritual endeavors. When they decided to come back (to where they’ll always belong they realized) their careers took on a more meaningful and productive path. Laurice won honors for her comeback movie “Tanging Yaman” under Star Cinema. Johnny went back to TV and movie acting with as much passion as when he left the business. They couldn’t ask for more.
Laurice’s next movie after “Tanging Yaman” was “American Adobo” which was produced by Tony Gloria’s Unitel Pictures. The movie starring Christopher de Leon, Dina Bonnevie, Cherry Pie Picache, Sandy Andolong, Ricky Davao, and others was shot in the US.

“Santa-Santita” is Laurice’s third movie after her “resurrection.”

And if the story is biblical, it’s intentional, the story made it that way. The female lead character is an adaptation of Mary Magdalene’s story.

So being spiritual and religious in context, Laurice shot most of the movie in the Quiapo area, an apt location indeed. But some scenes especially dream sequences, she shot in Currimao, Ilocos Norte. Laurice also shot some scenes in a church in Iguig, Tuguegarao where the biggest station of the cross is located, she said. “I saw the place a long time ago and I said to myself I’ll go back to translate the church’s beauty in film. I had the chance to fulfill that dream via ‘Santa-Santita.’”

Laurice related how stressful working in the crowded Quiapo area was. “Every time, I had numerous extras. Because in addition to those we hired, there were the regular Quiapo devotees and residents of the area. And then shooting inside the church also posed a big problem at first. Sabi nila noong una, no shooting allowed inside the church. Then, we were given an hour to shoot every time. Then we were allowed to shoot from 1-3:30 p.m. which later was extended to 4 p.m. So what I did, before we go inside the church, tinatapos ko muna ang mga eksena sa labas...”

“Santa-Santita” is Laurice’s first movie where no beautiful houses and well-heeled people are featured. What is shown in the movie are the working people, those struggling to get by everyday of their lives. Shown are the manghuhulas, the ubiquitous vendors, pickpockets, saints and sinners alike in quest for salvation.

Angelica Panganibans character is the daughter of a woman who is paid to say prayers. She was born and raised in Quiapo amidst poverty and the sinfulness of the area. Angelica plays a young woman who does not have any deep spirituality within her but she knows all the prayers; she doesn’t pray with her heart though. She prays like her mother but it’s only lip service; she prays not with her heart. Angelica sells religious articles outside and around the church where evil lurks in every corner.

If it took Unitel a long time to start work on the film project, it was because “it took us a long time to search for the actress who could perfectly fit in the role,” Laurice said. “I wanted someone young but maldita ang dating, but at the end she struggles to be good to redeem herself. I needed a sexy-looking girl but one who can act. I had in mind someone like Hilda Koronel when she was 13 but already could play someone older and mature with depth.”

Laurice and Tony requested Johnny Manahan of ABSCBN Talent Center to audition his talents. “We auditioned 30 of them,” Laurice said. “Some of them had played supporting roles in films already. But we couldnt find what we were looking for among them. Then one day, Angelica Panganiban came to audition. And we found in her the actress we wanted.”

What made them choose the 17-year-old (she’ll turn 18 in November) former child star? “Well, she has strength of character, matapang siya and there’s that hunger for a good role that we sensed in her. She liked the role very much. I talked to her mother and told her what I wanted from her daughter. I told her Angelica will have a love scene in the movie.

That love scene is with Jericho who Laurice wanted to play the male lead role from the very start. She first directed Jericho in “Tanging Yaman” and since then she told herself she could use him again in a future movie.

Jericho plays a driver for a car rental agency. He is a hustler, magnanakaw, a seducer , a tough guy but very charming with women. Angelica falls in love with him. Their love scene is not sizzling and graphic, but there is passion in it and done amidst the noises in Quiapo. I’m hoping for an R-rating for the movie...”

There was great chemistry between Jericho and Angelica, Laurice stressed. “This is needed for them to come out with a good performance. Both of them delivered what I wanted,” said Laurice with great pride.

“Santa-Santita” was never intended for the Metro Manila Film Festival, Laurice clarified. “Tony did not like a December playdate for the film, because he wanted to show it simultaneously in some key cities of the US. Pag December kasi, napakalamig sa America and people would be tamad to go out just to see a movie.”

This early, we expect “Santa-Santita” to become another landmark film for the multi-awarded Laurice whove been honored and recognized both as actress and film director and screenplay writer too. She has about 24 trophies to attest to her mettle as actress, director and scriptwriter.

As actress, she was first seen in Lea Productions “Crush Ko Si Sir” (1971),directed by Nestor U. Torre, Jr. She was last seen in the movie “Bakit Iisa ang Puso,” directed by the late Eddie Rodriguez for Viva Films.

On television, Laurice appeared on “Flor de Luna,” the soap opera that catapulted Janice de Belen to stardom, for five years. A good actress, Laurice however would rather direct than act at this time.
An AB English graduate from St. Theresa’s College Cebu, Laurice (who is Laurice Guillen Feleo, wife of actor Johnny Delgado, in private life) is founding member trustee of the Actors Workshop Foundation, founding member of the Kapisanan ng mga Director ng Pelikulang Pilipino, member of the Katipunan ng mga Artista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, and founding member of the Directors Guild of the Philippines.
