Mga Bedista, Can we get the NCAA crown this year?

souljah_boy
Jun 7, 2003, 12:41 PM
i think san beda's goal is to get into the final four

dapat hindi championship ang iniisip muna eh; we should take things one at a time...first goal is to have a good standing in the 1st round...next goal have a good standing in the 2nd round and be part of the final four...last goal na yung championship di ba?

SBC will continue to struggle in the NCAA when the top players of the Red Cubs end up playing for UAAP schools in college. From last years championship team, four star players will see action for UP, LaSalle and Ateneo. Casio at LaSalle, Agbayani for UP, Arao and Escueta for Ateneo. Three other players are in team B; Condevillamar for UP and Braganza and Baldos for Ateneo.

Tell me the Red Lions could not use any of the above mentioned players! :D

Ang kulit ninyo, sabi nang training team ng UAAP and Red Cubs.

The good players are with UP, LaSalle and Ateneo. Look at Escueta, Baldos and Braganza; Ateneo stockpiled them for their team B until next year while Condevillamar is with UP. Villanueva is sitting out the year due to residency after returning from the
States but will tear up the UAAP for FEU. Sumalinog is suppose to be playing for UST.

Jun 10, 2003, 11:29 AM
The Sumalinog brother who used to be from San Beda is Hermes Sumalinog, who is now suiting up for Mapua. Micmic Sumalinog is the one playing for UST.

I believe that Erl Merelos and Vin Velasco are out of the lineup, with reasons for which I do not know.

I guess SBC should seriously consider leaving NCAA and join the UAAP starting 2004 season.

merelos and velasco, out for this season? but why's?! sayang pa naman si merelos...ang alam ko he's playing his last year eh

i saw the practice of the red lions and their scrimmage (team A vs. team B)...and velasco was playing for team B in that scrimmage...merelos, however, was at the bench of team A

Sadly, it's becoming a usual sight.

Players on their last year in the Red Lions are getting kicked out of the team for unknown reasons. Last year, a lot of players were axed - Britt Reroma, one of the best point guards in the league, along with Carlo Manding, Jal Casio, Jamieson Juco, and Clint Erestain.

I don't know if it is a move by the management to give way to the rookies...yet, they are throwing out a lot of talent. The very players with big hearts who are supposed to lead the team with experience and loyalty to the school are just ending up with dashed hopes in making the Red Lions a champion team again.

Erl Merelos and Vin Velasco did play for the Fr. Martin and Ambrosio Padilla games, but knew very well that they were about to be cut. Merelos could have graduated this sem but planned to take up another course just to make use of his last playing year.

I do hope the management and coaching staff has a change of heart.

Melody,

Missed your reports about the Fr. Martin Cup this year. Patay kasi ang Pex.

If what you said is true about SBC team management and coaching staff, then this might be the last year for Arjun Cordero or he may be the exception to the rule. Maybe that is one of the reason why none of the star Red Cubs except for Arjun plays for SBC.

Let me clarify some of the points raised here. Britt Reroma was not allowed to played for the Red Lions because of academic deficiencies. We have a strict academic standard in San Beda that even athletes have to comply. Britt knows this and there if there is a bad feeling about this then why did Britt accepted the job of being an assistant coach for the Cubs?

Jal Casio (DLSU rookie JV Casio's kuya) already graduated thats why hes no longer in the team. We could very much use his outside shooting.

James Juco, the guy spent most of his tenure in San Beda with our team B. I think he already graduated.

As for Velasco and Merelos, that is Jonathan's decision.

The Red Lions' chance this season is most definitely better. We will compete and fight for a slot in the Final Four. I must caution you guys on pinning too much hope on San Beda this season, our team has improved but other teams have also improved. Nonetheless, I am very excited with our current team and who knows they might pull the rug under the feet of our opponents - hindi sila nakakasigurado !

They found out na iba ang magiging curriculum as early as June 02...wala pa sila ginagawang action. Eh di shempre wala na choice yung mga nag-enroll but to stay with them dahil close na ang ibang schools. Diba if you will open a new course, the first things you should do and polish and have approved is the curriculum? Diba 100 years na daw ang Beda? Eh bat nde yata nila ito alam? Ano nangyare? I don't mean to sound rude here but sobrang mali lang tlaga ang ginawa nila. Tpos eto pa...June 17 nagpatawag sila ng orientation/meeting for the affected students...dapat 8AM...dumating sila 10:30AM tpos nagstart ng 11AM...is that being professional? I don't think so.

If Velasco was a batchmate of Cordero and Membrere, why is he not on the roster of SBC? Cordero is only playing on his 4th year for SBC while Membrerer due to his injury last year will only play his third season for Ateneo.

Melody may be right concerning Velasco. Retiring his jersey was "consuelo de bobo" na lang on the part of SBC to Velasco. I am sure he would have preferred to be playing for the Red Lions on his senior year.

Reroma accepted the job as assistant coach of the Red Cubs due to his loyalty with San Beda. He wanted badly to play for the seniors' team in his last playing year. However, some undisclosed issues erupted at the last minute and he, along with the other players mentioned, were scrapped from the team due to insubordination with the new management.

Because coach Ato saw Britt's intent to stay with San Beda, he absorbed him as assistant coach last year. And if his later plans in coaching does not push through, I think he has plans to play for another collegiate team outside of the NCAA.

It is not a secret that there is some bad blood between the two camps of old players and the new management. I hope that this be resolved in the soonest possible time because it will not help the Red Lions in making itself an NCAA powerhouse anew because the team is seen as a possible contender this season.

I do not know Jonathan personally but from what some people told me, he is quite a disciplinarian. Maybe those "old" players, including Britt, did not like the new system and thus, shown the door. That academic deficiency excuse for Britt may be just a cover-up. I told one of our monks that I did not agree with Jonathan not playing Velasco and Merelos, and he agreed with me but that is Jonathan's decision as the coach of the team and we, alums should keep our hands off. With our impressive play and victory against the Blue Eagles yesterday, it seems like Jonathan knows what he is doing.

yep the red lions won against PCU. they led as many as 24 through a trapping defense and a very, very fluid offensive game (inside and outside; plus a breakaway dunk by arjun). the dolphins mounted a comeback to trim the deficit to 7 only to meet another run by the red lions to finish the game.

Bughao is a revelation. Cordero, Paterno, Hudencial, Bombeo, Angeles and Padilla were consistent.

Free-throw shooting remains a problem but i see some killer instinct in this team.

Letran, UPHR, San Sebastian would be the biggest obstacle this season in my opinion.

his injury? kung fractured yung foot niya, 'di siya makakalakad ng maayos...he can still walk but he limps when he walk..sana makaabot siya in time for the SAN BEDA-LETRAN game

There will be a lot of games between UAAP and NCAA teams in the Grudge Games. And when SBC meets DLSU, UP and Ateneo, I hope that the red cubs playing there show a little respect and sense of gratitude to SBC. Particularly Agbayani, Arao, Membrere, Casio, Tenorio, Almeda, Tabique et al ... I just want to know, how does it feel playing against San Beda? Well at the San Beda Ateneo ball game last Grudge game in the Champions League, I was like watching a San Beda vs San Beda Ball game with some familiar bedans donning Blue.

During our time, Red Lions game is more important than academics. Die hard kami. We talk to our professors for a make up class so we can all watch the game.

One time, championship against Mapua and it was near finals din. I remember the admin made an annoucement na tuloy ang final exam. They also threatned us na double absent daw. but the SC officers went room by room asking to support the Red Lions. Come that day, walang tao naiwan sa SBC except for the security guards. People power kami sa Ultra. There's power in numbers.

That's right, its benny cheng. I still remember na 5 games yan SBC vs Mapua. 2 games in the elimination to break the tie, then best of 3 in the championship.

Ang daming personalities umatend sa ultra. The crowd went wild when Richard Gomez shake the hands of Boybits while they were warming up. SBC community painted Ultra red.

Presidential candidate then Ramon Mitra went center court to lead the cheering. Let's keep our fingers cross. 14-0 this year.

As I predicted, it'll be an uphill climb for the Red Lions. With that 29 pts. loss, its very clear that coach reyes is not doing his job. He and his staff should have scouted the opponents. Talagang power house ang JRU, at dapat pinaghandaan.

Jose Rizal U bombs San Beda, 104-75

Marco Fajardo scored 20 points as the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers blasted the San Beda Lions, 104-75, in the 79th NCAA seniors basketball tournament Monday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Fajardo scored 13 points in the first half to help the Mandaluyong-based quintet build a 54-39 lead. The Heavy Bombers were never threatened after the first half.

It was JRU's second straight win after absorbing a 77-81 defeat to San Sebastian on opening day.

Jerome Paterno had 21 points for the Red Lions who suffered their second loss in three games.

Wynston John TE of JRU is such a streak shooter. Imagine how he shoots the ball in the trey na parang asa free throw line lang sya. Ang galing ng kamay nya sa tres. I was so disappointed kahapon after i saw the game. La rin kasing crowd pinadala ang beda. Mga taga-UPHR ang nakaupo sa side natin.

Jul 8, 2003, 03:13 AM
Its very clear that Coach Reyes didn't do his assignment. If only he scouted the opponents, umpisa pa lang alam na niya kung sino ang marked man. When JRU played Mapua, you can see how fluid their offense was. plus their remarkable defense. Its very clear that the Red Lions was caught flat footed.

After the game against Letran. SBC's achilles heel has been exposed. Coach Reyes should have made counter press plays. worst, we lost to JRU by 29 using d same defense strategy. Now, against UPHR, he should expect 40 mins. of full court press.

Jul 10, 2003, 02:43 PM
i think last year ganun na talaga problem ng red lions eh; getting beaten up by the full-court press...i don't know why! aren't they reviewing their game tapes?

they also have to swing the ball as fast as possible so that their opponents would get fatigued so easily...dapat gayahin nila ang red cubs kase napaka-fluid ng ball movement nila eh; they always are able to find the open man

some of the red lions were under coach ato before...why aren't they applying his teachings now?

LET US ALL PRAY FOR OUR RED LIONS SO THAT TOMORROW THEY MAY GET WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS, A WIN!

San Beda crushes UPHR, 92-76

The San Beda Red Lions crushed the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 92-76, in the 79th NCAA men's basketball tournament Friday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Jerome Paterno led the Lions with 20 points, 10 of them banged in during the third quarter, where the Mendiola-based squad broke the game wide open to build a 67-52 lead and never looked back. He also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots by the Altas.

Veteran Arjun Cordero added 18 points while rookie Mark Apepe, who shot 3-of-4 from the three-point range, had 15.

Dominador Javier led the Altas' losing cause with 26 points but failed to get the needed support from the rest of his teammates.

San Beda improved to a 2-2 slate while Perpetual Help absorbed its second straight loss after a 2-0 start this season.

i went to see the sbc-csb game last friday and the lions really amazed me with the way they played. although we failed in the freethrow department (well this has been our waterloo since ralph rivera's era), we still managed to win the game.

good passing plays, pesky trapping defense and players with big hearts... that was how we won the game. i have never seen this kind of game from san beda for a long time.

i have a very good feeling about our team. Not only this season, but for the upcoming seasons as well. the ncaa basketball crown is well within our reach. i pray that our players stay healthy and hope that they work doubly hard in the upcoming games.

We defeated the defending champs, San Sebastian later this afternoon with a whooping 11 point lead, 80-69. The center of power,Jerome Paterno lead the Red Lions to another victory by having majority of his shots inside the paint. The Bedans outnumbered the Bastenians in supporting their respective teams.

Are happy days here again for last year’s whipping boys?

Coach Jonathan Reyes and team skipper Arjun Cordero thinks so after the San Beda Red Lions upset back-to-back champion San Sebastian College, 80-69, Monday night in the 79th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Rizal Coliseum. The smiles of the Red Lions are even wider and the singing inside the locker room even louder after they joined the Mapua cardinals in second spot with their fourth win in six outings.Jefferson Gonzales sizzled with 18 points, four rebounds, an assist and a block in carrying the Mapua cardinals to a 83-63 plastering of the College of St. Benilde Blazers earlier in the day.But it was the heroics of Jeffrey Martin and Nathaniel Cruz in the early goings enabled the Cardinals to post their fourth win in six matches. Martin chipped in 15 points, six rebounds, eight assists and six steals while Raymund Dula provided 13.

The Red Lions are now celebrating their best start since going down to the bottom of the standings after eight straight losses last year. Not since 1997 did they have their days of glory when they made it to the Finals and lost to the Stags. They also reached 1991 championship which Mapua eventually claimed.Jerome Paterno powered the Red Lions with 29 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals while Ronnie Bughao backed him up with 19.The Stags played with ace slotman Pep Moore still recovering from his allergies and held scoreless all throughout. His double-team back-up Leo Najorda was silenced in the third canto.

A 22-10 run in the second quarter behind Paterno and Mark Apepe enabled the Red Lions to build a 42-32 halftime spread.Paterno’s layup off Jeff Bombeo’s pass with 2:04 left in third quarter enabled the Red Lions to take charge, 60-38.“Papunta na kami duon sa masasayang araw,” said Reyes after getting a bear hug from their athletic moderator Fr. Bede Hechanova..“Mataas ang kumpiyansa naming pagkatapos ng panalong ito. Feeling naming ay kaya naming ang lahat ng team. Gagawin naming ang lahat. Hard work. Hindi kami magpapabaya,” said Cordero.

The Red Lions finally got the nod and high fives of the Red Cubs, who roared to their sixth straight triumph in the junior division with a 68-57 beating of the SSC Staglets.Jay-R Taganas notched 24 points while Rogemar Menor figured with 16, including a layup with 2:02 remaining which gave the Red Cubs a 64-54 spread.

The Mapua Red Robins turned to the charities of Kaiser Ocampo in putting away La Salle-Greenhills, 89-86, in the junior side.Ocampo unloaded two free throws less than 17 seconds to go power the Red Robins to improve at 4-2.Janeth Aguilar fired 28 points while Arjay del Rosario made 22 for the Red Robins. The Cardinals, hardly minding the absence of key player Ryan Malig because of the flu, stayed in the chase for the top two Final Four semifinal slots as they dealt the Blazers their sixth straight loss.Marin, the Cardinals’ fiery point guard, pulled Mapua out of a 4-all tie with a triple with 7:26 left, setting the tone for a decisive 18-6 run.

The San Beda Red Lions are getting closer to a dream. And seven more games at that.

And sophomore Ronnie Bughao made them realize how closer and closer they are getting to their hearts’ desire when he carried the Red Lions to an 85-82 edging of the Mapua Cardinals Friday in the 79th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Rizal Coliseum.

The 5’11 Bughao eked out 23 points with skipper Arjun Cordero and dished out four rebounds, nine assists and seven steals in helping the Red Lions grab the solo lead with their fifth victory against two losses at the end of the first round.

His shining moment came in the last 14 seconds when the younger brother of professional cager Derrick Bughao sank three of five charities off fouls by Jeffrey Martin and Tristan Veranga to keep San Beda out of trouble. The free throws came after Raymond Dula’s driveallowed Mapua to threaten, 80-81, with 45 seconds remaining.

“Walang pressure itong mga shots ko. Sabi ni coach ay hindi kami dapat ma-pressure. Panalo na kasi kami, said the Marketing sophomore from Cebu. With the win, the Red Lions are now having thoughts of the glory days they had when they last won the title in 1978 when they had the likes of Mike Advani and Fai Easter University Tamaraws coach Coy Banal in their roster.“Yeah. So near and yet so far. Malayo pa dahil kailangan pa naming ma-master ang mga mistakes sa defense. Natalo kami sa coaching ni Horacio Lim sa depensa. Pero nanalo naman kami sa free throws,” said San Beda coach Jonathan Reyes.

In the junior side, the San Beda Red Cubs swept their seven-game first round assignment, outplaying the Mapua Red Robins, 92-86.James Martines showed the way with 23 points while Rogemar Menor pumped in 22 as the Red Cubs stayed on course for their title retention bid.Two free throws from Arnold Paredes with less than 16 seconds to go enabled the Red cubs to stop Mapua’s rally from nine points down early in the period.“Lamang kami ng 16. pero nagmadali sila. Pero nag-settle down din ang mga bata sa huli. Malayo pa kami sa finals,” said Red Cubs mentor Ato Badolato.

The Red Lions were enjoying a 49-41 spread at the end of the third quarter when a rally touched off by Jefferson Gonzales’ trey and capped by a drive from Dula enabled Mapua to stay close, 52-55, with 5:01 to go.

This may be the Year of Red Lions

By Joey Villar
The Philippine Star 07/28/2003

The long wait could be over for the San Beda Red Lions.

A day after capping its first round campaign with a lead-clinching 85-82 win over Mapua, San Beda is in a position to end a long title-drought stretching 25 years.

San Beda coach Jonathan Reyes thinks that although the 79th NCAA basketball tournament is far from being over, a lot of people, mostly the alumni, feel this could be the year.

"We can’t celebrate this early because we still have lots of things to do," said Reyes minutes after steering his charges to a league-best fifth win in seven outings.

"But I’m sure a lot of our supporters are very happy with the way we’re going. Though we’re still far from there, I’m very happy with our current position," he added.

San Beda’s title came as far back as 1978 during the time of former PBA cager and Asian Gamer Chito Loyzaga, son of the legendary Caloy "The Big Difference" Loyzaga.

From there, it was all heartaches and disappointments.

And Reyes, himself a player from 1981 to 1984 with another ex-pro Mukesh Advani and Far Eastern U mentor Coy Banal as teammates, knows pretty well how it felt.

"I know the feeling because I’ve been there both as a player and a spectator in the school’s 25-year title drought so I’m pretty much involved.

"Now if we can continue to play like this, work harder and trust each other more, maybe this year could be the end of a long, sad story," said the second year, 40-year-old San Beda bench tactician.

One reason why San Beda is playing this good is skipper Arjun Cordero, who has been dishing

out inspiring efforts including a 23-point outburst in a recent win that extended San Beda’s amazing run to four.

Also, Cordero’s supporting cast this year is better and more mature compared to last season when they finished seventh with a 2-12 card behind bottom sweeper Perpetual Help (1-13).

Jerome Paterno, for one, has improved tremendously with his athleticism and quickness in the shaded area. Another veteran Jeff Bombeo is also a big factor as he turned himself from a one-dimensional scorer to more of a decoy and defense specialist.

Other sources come from Reyes‚ new recruits—Ronnie Bughao, Mark Apepe, Francis Cruz and Michael Casino.

With these players, the long wait for San Beda could really be over this season.

Was it 1990 the last time San Beda played for the championship? The Red Lions were then led by Boybits Victoria and Merlowe Castelo.

I saw that game at the Ultra. Mapua won on that follow-up shot by Benny Cheng. San Beda had one last shot to bag the title, but a bad reception of a fastbreak play botched whatever chances there were. Mapua won by a singular point.

At the college level, in championship games, it's not the skills or teamwork that decides the outcome. It the ability of ONE PLAYER to lead the team. One players' ability to carry the team on his shoulders. His oncourt presence brings confidence into his teammates. And come crunch time, he must have the courage and decisiveness to take THE SHOT.

If Cordero can live up to that role, then this year should be IT.

As said by Ron Jacobs, "...players win games."

San Beda, JRU take separate
foes in dispute of NCAA lead
Posted: 11:31 PM (Manila Time) | Jul. 31, 2003
Inquirer News Service

THE SECOND round of the 2003-2004 NCAA basketball tournament begins Monday with San Beda College and Jose Rizal University trying to extend their domination of the senior division at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

San Beda battles Philippine Christian University at 1:15 p.m., while Jose Rizal tackles St. Benilde at 4:45 p.m.

The San Beda Lions and the JRU Heavy Bombers finished the first round with 5-win, 2-loss records, sharing top spot with the Letran Knights, which drew a bye.

The Red Lions will be minus 6-foot-4 center Michael Casiño who, together with Mapua's Nathaniel Cruz, got ejected last July 25 after an altercation during a rebound play with 4:28 left in the third quarter. Casiño and Cruz will serve one-game suspensions.

Junior division matches pit the unbeaten San Beda Cubs against the PCU Baby Dolphins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Letran Squires-La Salle Greenhills tussle at 3 p.m.

The second round was supposed to begin Friday, but the NCAA Management Committee declared it as a rest day owing to the tight contest in the senior division.

Tailing the frontrunners are Mapua and defending champion San Sebastian, both at 4-3.

In contrast to the tight fight among their elders, the reigning titlist Red Cubs are pulling away in the juniors division.

The Red Cubs, also the national inter-secondary champion, swept the first round with a 92-86 victory over the Mapua Red Robins. The Ato Badolato-mentored Red Cubs posted an average winning margin of 18 points in seven games.

All second round matches will be held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum except for two gamedays in the second week of competition, Aug. 13 and 15, which will be at the Makati Coliseum.

Lions, Too Tough for the Dolphins
By Peter Atencio

Most valuable player candidate Arjun Cordero dished out 19 points, 10 rebounds and an assist as the San Beda Red Lions walloped the Philippine Christian University Dolphins, 94-79 yesterday in the 79th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's basketball tournament at the Rizal Coliseum.

Cordero scored eight of this in the first period as the Red Lions tried their best to take charge with their full court pressure defense and take charge with a 21-14 first period edge.

But their efforts to quickly eke out their sixth victory in eight matches and stay on top of the standings came at the expense of losing one of their main men Jeff Bombeo to injury.

Bombeo sprained his right Achilles tendon after his drive handed the Red Lions a 21-11 edge.

In the junior side, the San Beda Red Cubs came away with their eighth straight win with a 78-60 blasting of the PCU Baby Dolphins.

Jay-R Taganas chipped in 20 points, while Arnold Paredes and Rogemar Menor made 14 and 13 points respectively.

Bombeo's woes kept the Red Lions from fully utilizing coach Jonathan Reyes' new game plan as the Dolphins managed to stay close by seven till halftime, 49-42, behind the triples of Ray Francis Benitez and Jason Castro.

The Red Lions got into the groove in the third period as medics attended to Bombeo's injury in the next quarter.

Cordero, who is running third to teammates Ronnie Bughao and Jerome Paterno in the MVP race, came off with a three-point play while Choco Weber went for a drive with seven minutes, enabling the Mendiola-based dribblers to gain a 10-point edge, 56-46.

Cordero's drive off his steal from Ramon Retaga with 5:34 left allowed San Beda to widen their gap by 12, 62-50.

"Medyo soft ang umpisa dahil hindi pa sapat iyung depensa naming. But it was one hell of a tough defense in the second half," said Red Lions coach Jonathan Reyes.

Going for 7-2.
