ONLY LESS than a month on local TV, the Taiwanese soap "Meteor Garden," dubbed in Tagalog by ABS-CBN, has made it to the No. 5 spot among the network's Top 15 programs, according to the AGB Philippines survey for the period of May 18 to 24.

"Meteor Garden" posted a rating of 29.6 percent, the survey said.

ABS-CBN bought the rights to air "Meteor Garden," which has started a region-wide craze. The lead stars, the boyband, F4 or Flower 4, is also fast gaining popularity in Europe and the United States and have two hit CDs.

However, the popularity of "Meteor Garden," shown at 5:30 p.m. daily, has also raised a howl of protest. Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Chair Consoliza P. Laguardia earlier brought to the attention of ABS-CBN vice president for TV Cory Vidanes the complaints against the program, that certain episodes of which are said to have violated the provisions of the censorship law.

Bulacan Rep. Willie Villarama has called for the banning of "Meteor Garden," noting that it was also banned in China, where parents reportedly complained that the show had a bad effect on society and the young.

Laguardia also ordered ABS-CBN to submit each episode of "Meteor Garden" to the board for review and approval prior to telecast.

In a letter to Laguardia last June 4, Maloli Espinosa-Manalastas, ABS-CBN vice president for government and corporate affairs and PR, assured the MTRCB chair that the network would exercise self-regulation and "closely review the presentation of the program."

"We are mindful of our responsibility to the viewers of the program, most of whom are children and minors," said Manalastas' letter to MTRCB. "We will ensure that the scenes included in the program fall properly within the Parental Guidance (PG) classification."

With the frenzy over "Meteor Garden," GMA Network also recently negotiated with a Taiwanese production for the right to air a Chinovela opposite the ABS-CBN hit.

According to teaser clips, merchandising plugs and music videos, the GMA 7 soap will revolve around a basketball player and a girl or two.

AGB Philippines' overnight ratings for May 27 showed "Meteor Garden" getting a whopping 68-percent audience share among viewers in Metro Manila and neighboring areas Rizal, Laguna, Cavite and Bulacan.

In its 5:30 p.m. time slot, "Meteor Garden" crushed GMA Network's "Extra Extra" (hosted by Paolo Bediones and Miriam Quiambao), which got an audience share of only 18 percent.

Overnight ratings are results for a specific day that are compiled over a one-week period before being released officially. Usually, overnight ratings reflect the trend for the whole week.

The only programs that beat "Meteor Garden" in terms of ratings during that survey week were other ABS-CBN programs, all evening soaps. These included the just-concluded Nora Aunor starrer "Bituin" with 38.9 percent, "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay" with 36.8 percent, "Darating ang Umaga" with 36.5 percent and the Jericho Rosales-Kristine Hermosa starrer, "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas" with 35.2 percent.

AGB's May 27 overnight results also showed the ABS-CBN evening soaps lording it over their GMA Network counterparts.

"Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay" did considerably better than "Habang Kapiling Ka," with an audience share of 55 percent versus the latter's 28 percent.

ABS-CBN's latest dramedy (mix of drama and comedy), "Basta't Kasama Kita," which stars Judy Ann Santos and Robin Padilla, had a 60-percent audience share. Its counterpart on GMA 7, "Ang Iibigin ay Ikaw Pa Rin," had a 27-percent share.

"Darating ang Umaga" continued to reign in its time slot with a 53-percent audience share, while "Sana ay Ikaw na Nga" had 32 percent.

"Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas" had a 50-percent audience share, edging out "Kung Mawawala Ka" with 32 percent.

ABS-CBN's "TV Patrol" had a 63-percent audience share on May 27. The Mel Tiangco-anchored "Frontpage" had less than half at 31 percent.

The Kris Aquino game show "Game Ka Na Ba," was in a league of its own, cornering 52 percent of Mega Manila viewers on May 27.

As far as MG By June of 2003 it was already rating 44.7 with a audience share of 68 % and this is at the 5:30pm time slot

Mg was said to got the highest rating of 63 % and ended at 56 % which is certainly phenomenal considering its time slot
