Hey guys!!!
I'm just wondering if anybody could help me out or give me some tips about taking the TOEFL....
The school that I'll be transferring to this coming Fall 2003 requires me to take this test eventhough I'm taking higher English levels.

As an alternative, you can also take the IELTS exam. While the TOEFL is the American English exam, IELTS is the British English exam as used by British-based countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. It really doesn't matter which one you take since the US accepts IELTS results and British Commonwealth countries also accept TOEFL.
Anyway, I took the IELTS last year and passed. I had no preparation whatsoever. Your only test to see if you'll pass is if you can watch an English movie and understand everything (hindi yung mga slang ng blacks ha! siguro mga serious movies like courtroom cases, etc.).

Anyways, thank you guys for posting about this test... I was browsing thorugh the internet and I saw useful sites where I could get some hints on what kind of questions they're going to ask....
This test is confidential that you can't tell the actual questions...

hi there! I have taken the TOEFL in July 2002 as a part of the requirement for ECFMG certification. It is really very easy, basic and simple. You don't have to study as long as you know practical conversational and written English. For you, I think it will be a breeze since you say you'll be taking up courses in higher English.:)

Yeah, both TOEFL and IELTS are a bit expensive. Here's the IELTS websit by the way, and it costs P5000 flat for the test. The TOEFL costs $110 or P5900.

You can take IELTS in the Philippines here:

may i butt in and ask a stupid question? where is the testing cite for the philippines for the computer-based toefl test? if there isn't one, where in the philippines do we take the paper-based test?
i went to the site http://etsis4.ets.org/tcenter/cbtfrlst.cfm to view the list, and it says in the philippines, one must call malaysia first to register. did i understand correctly? thank you for your patience.
based on all i'm hearing, it seems to be an easy test. the hard part is all the things one must consider reading the toefl bulletin. ugh!!

Hello greenDestiny,
The primary source of info would be: http://www.ets/org/toefl
If you're from Manila, then you could take it in the Ateneo Salcedo Campus (that's in Makati). Of course, it's being run by some institute (Prometric), and they only have their Manila office in the Salcedo campus. I know there's also a testing center in Cebu.
You could register online, and pay by credit card. When I took it in 2004, I had to shell out the peso equivalent of $130. Yeah, it's quite expensive in peso terms, and you'll feel this all the more after taking the test, and you've realized that the test was so damn easy.
If you're taking the GRE, the test center will be the same. Now, I'm not sure if they still offer the TOEFL everyday. I think I'm just confused right now (I thought I remember somebody told me that the GRE, or TOEFL, is now just offered on certain days).
I think it's also possible to just walk in to the Makati testing center and take the test, but it's really better to register beforehand, just so you've got everything ironed out.

hi, so far i have not taken any TOEFL test, but nonetheless, i think ill prefer the paper-based test, there's no assurance that the online will go well unless there is no time limit on the online test.
im planning to save money first, because it seems that the price for a toefl exam is very unfriendly. hahaha. what are the contents or questions typically asked for toefl?
two year period? good grief.

The advantage of taking the computer-based test is that right there and then, malalaman mo na ang result ng test mo (except of course sa essay part). Ipapakita sa isang screen towards the end ang scores mo dun sa objective part ng test.
Tapos since you'll be working on a computer, mas madali mag-reorganize ng paragraphs mo because of cut-and-paste, which you can't do if you were taking the paper-based test.
Kung paper-based test ang gusto mo, I don't know kung saan ka makakakuha. I'm not sure na walang ganitong option sa Pilipinas, pero ang idea ko kasi is that they offer the paper-based test sa mga countries (or areas) where computer-based testing is not available. Not sure about this though. Better check the website.

I just want to clarify, yun bang computer based TOEFL na na mention dito, ay yung TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Trainig)? I checked their website, here's their link:
http://www.ets.org
Pero when I looked up their testing centers, I didnt see the one in Ateneo that was mentioned earlier in the thread. Infact there's nothing in there for the Phils anymore. However, I know for a fact that some students/grads are still taking it here sa Pinas.
My question is saan ba talaga ang mga testing centers ng TOEFL iBT dito sa Pinas??? And how much do they charge now? Is it separate for TSE and TWE or combined na yung price nung dalawang exam??
HELP!

UP graduates applying for grad studies in the UK can exempt from submitting TOEFL/IELTS to their school of choice if it can give a certification that UP's medium of instruction is English. This has been done many times in the past.

^Not true. TOEFL and IELTS do not exempt non-native speakers of English or students who are not from countries where English is the dominant language (This includes the Philippines). I know this because I prepare students who wish to take TOEFL and IELTS. ETS or the Educational Testing Service makes sure that regulations about who 'must' take the TOEFL are strictly implemented. Walang lusot talaga.
TOEFL, by the way, is mainly for international students planning to study in the United States, Canada, and even the Philippines. It evaluates the student's understanding of Standard American English and has nothing to do with British English. IELTS, on the other hand, is taken by international students who are planning to study at Australian, British, Canadian, South African, Irish, or New Zealand academic institutions.
I also happen to know for a fact that the up system has an existing language policy, created in the late 80's, using Filipino as the medium of instruction in your university (I know this because I did a linguistic research project on the medium of instruction in the Philippines when I was still a student at UST. I even interviewed people from your DFPP). There's no way that you can prove that up system uses English as a medium of instruction.
Si black ship talaga, oo.

^Just out of curiosity, how does TOEFL determine the "English-is-the-dominant-language" criteria.
I remember wanting to point out before to my school's international advisor that English is one of the official languages of the Philippines to save time and exempt myself from taking TOEFL (and waiting for about 3 weeks for the results). I just decided against it because I thought my argument was poor and I would risk delaying the results if I don't take the test right away.
So alas, I took the TOEFL nonetheless. :D

But schools themselves can waive the TOEFL requirement. Not all of them do this, however. And I guess that for some of them who do waive this, they may put a higher priority on those who took TOEFL, with all other things being equal. I remember when I was applying a few years back, there was this one university which listed the Philippines as a country whose citizens don't need to submit a TOEFL score (but I can't remember anymore which university this was). Anyway, I ended up taking the TOEFL since I also sent applications to schools which required a TOEFL score, and I was applying as a teaching assistant (I was hoping taking this test would give me a more competitive edge).

I don't think TOEFL/ETS determine the criteria. The schools decide whether your country is sufficiently "English-speaking" for their purposes. If your country is on the doubtful list, they'll require TOEFL just to make sure you're good.

"English-is-the-dominant-language" means that English is spoken, used, and understood fluently by the majority of people in a country.

True, but only few schools waive TOEFL if you can present proof of English facility in other ways like interviews, other proficiency tests, or even (a) certification(s) from the school(s) you attended; however, this is not as common as it should be since, in most cases, schools in the US and Canada do really require or have TOEFL cut-off scores.
By the way, TOEFL is not necessarily a teaching requirement. It is better to get certifications like TESOL in order to teach English, EAP for academic purposes, TOEIC language proficiency for (teaching) business and related purposes, or Praxis Series for teacher certification exams in order for you to teach in most U.S. states.

Is TOEFL easier than IELTS? Or the other way around?
I'm applying for a Master's degree in the States and despite having taken ILETS, I think I'd still be required to take TOEFL. Sheesh, that'd be another 7,500 or so!

I took the TOEFL. Pati yung TSL (which is the speech counterpart).
I didn't prepare for both tests. It basically measures your english proficiency...basic grammar (singular, plural), spelling, comprehension...stuff like that.
I got high marks sa TOEFL...but I remember most my score sa TSL because I got the highest possible score.
And I agree with the poster above. If you want to teach english, di dapat TOEFL kunin mo. Dapat TESOL.

to register, go to www.ets.org. may links dun for tests such as GRE, TSE and TOEFL. this is also where you register and where you get instructions and other details (e.e. where the test will be administered, how much you have to pay)
i took the TOEFL in 2005 sa office ng Prometric (group which offers it in the Philippines) which is in the Salcedo Makati campus of Ateneo. I paid the peso equivalent of $130 back then, pero ngayon, sabi sa webpage, $150 na for the internet based test and $140 for the paper based test. nung nag-take ako, it was a computer based test (na di na yata available ngayon).

koda_kumi, di ko na matandaan nung essay part ng toefl ko. tsaka baka useless rin kasi baka nag-iba na nung format ng exam. ang gawin mo ay maghanap ka sa internet ng information regarding the paper-based and internet-based forms of the toefl.
was the toefl hard? hmm, depende sa test taker iyan. people are free to interpret things their own way, pero madali lang sa akin nung toefl. after i took it, i realized na hindi ko talaga kinailangan magreview. anyway, i think after you register online, papadalhan ka ng cd para makapag-practice (i don't know if they still do this). useful siya para alam mo nung format (helps with the confidence factor). i guess after you take one practice exam, mas pwede mo ma-gauge kung kailangan mo ng mas masusing pagrereview.

Unlike the paper-based test (PBT) where writing is not part of the final score, but reported separately, the computer-adaptive test's (CAT's)---this has now been changed to Internet-Based Test (iBT)---writing section is a component of the structure section's score.
You will be given an essay prompt (usually an integrated task, i.e., you will read or listen to an academic passage and write about it, or an independent task where you have to write a personal essay; passage prompts like "The phases of the Moon...", "American Indians and their lifestyle...", "Reasons for attending college or university..", "Your opinion on stem cells...". "Money is the most valuable commodity in the world", etc. are common). You need to develop and write about that prompt sensibly, coherently, clearly and, of course, using correct grammar, following the usual intro-body-conclusion structure (about 250-300 words) for 30 minutes. Your essay will be scored from 0-6 (a score of 6 shows impeccable and strong writing abilities) by two writing test evaluators.
A lot of countries have now replaced PBT with iBT, so you have to ask the local Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the Philippines about this since PBT and iBT writing sections are executed and scored differently. You may also want to ask if the speaking part has already been included (this section was introduced in 2005 if I am not mistaken).

Nov 9, 2007, 05:02 PM
"Passing" depends on the end user. All you will get from TOEFL are scores and maybe a percentile. It is up to the school, or whatever other entity requiring the test, to determine what level is acceptable for its purposes.

No, madaming testing centers sa Metro Manila. Try to visit the website and click on "check seat availability". 15 working days, pwede nang ma-view online ang results. The harcopy of the results could take longer esp. if the address is outside the US.

i took this test 4 years ago. It was very easy and i think anyone who studied grade school and high school in the Philippines would ace the test since English is more or less our official language already (lets face it, we know more english words than filipino words hehe).
This test was really meant for countries with very low english proficiency such as korea, japan or south america :) Hehe wag kayo mamroblema dito, mabilis lang ito guys :)
Ayaw ko lang dito ay yung 2 year validity. Ang ikli sobra

i hope so too. pero now that i am currently self-reviewing for the test, "parang" madali nga. sa tingin ko ang deciding factors dito ay yung speaking and writing parts. kasi subjective na ang scoring dito in a way. i am taking the iBT exam. naubusan na kami ng slots for the PBT.

tama...dapat na identify ko na ang recipients before taking the exam...kaya tuloy i had to pay 17$ for additional report.
Anyone of you who took the exam last Oct 18? Tatanggap ba tau ng written report? Nakita ko lang score ko sa site.

I am applying for a Masters program in the US. ikaw? The book I'm using to review is the Official Guide to the New iBT TOEFL. Kung ganon ang lalabas sa exam, madali nga talaga.
Where did you take the test? How's the set-up in the test center, diba there's a speaking portion? Could you hear the other test takers during this portion?

mag-aapply ka after ma-grant scholarship? or may scholarship ka na? *okay*
dun kasi sa inaapplyan ko, all full time applicants are automatically considered for a scholarship/grant. so hindi ko rin alam kung mabibigyan, bonus na lang siguro yun if ever.
onTopic, ano ang set-up for the speaking part? hindi ba distracting?
Beda1746
Nov 20, 2008, 10:06 PM
im applying for a scholarship na connected na rin sa isang skul. the speaking part is not at all distracting. some fellow examinees noted na mas maganda ang testing center sa ateneo kesa sa ibang test sites. although maririnig mo rin ang iba doing the speaking part pero nakakafocus naman.
i just got the hard copy of the result. come in early lang sa test site mga one hour before.

thanks for the feedback. i'm glad to hear that. at least I chose Ateneo. I wanted to take it in Manila instead, but a friend insisted on taking it in Makati.
ang bilis ng results no? i got my gmat results in less than 7days. 5th day yata meron na. tapos a few days after, available na raw for viewing by the school. kahit mag-retake, aabot pa rin sa deadline ng application for the university. yung application ko nga hindi pa ready :P
yup, 1 hour early is always good just in case something comes up :)

I don't think TOEFL is a US government requirement. I don't even think it is required for any type of US visa application. It is required by schools and, sometimes, employers. So it depends on them if they will accept IELTS instead.

I prepare students for the TOEFL, so if you have questions, please feel free to drop me a line. By the way, are you taking the computer-adaptive or the paper-based test?
:)

siguro ang tanong is which one's easier for you. I believe the paper-based test doesn't have the actual speaking part. Here's the link for the test content: click here (http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=ed872d3631df4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=f591197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD). You may want to compare that with the iBT test content.

Some schools actually waive the TOEFL requirement. You just have to email the schools you're interested in applying to individually to find out.

lai ni9ne
yup, parang voice recorded prompt yung maririnig mo, tapos follow yung instructions.. mas mahirap siya siguro compared to IELTS kasi para kang nagsasalita sa hangin unlike sa IELTS na may nag-iinterview talaga sayo... and you're always pressed for time, dahil kailangan mo ma-deliver lahat ng thoughts mo sa loob ng iilang segundo...

but now yata combined na sya, TOEFL-ibt

Ah. Kasi may plano din ako magtake ng TOEFL. Experience muna :D
Pano naman po yung TSE? So, san po kayo ngayon?
sa pagkakaalala ko lang ha, meron yatang 5 type of test sa TSE
una yung may mga pictures na nakaayos in sequence...gagawan mo ng istorya na konektado yung unang picture hanggang sa huli
merong mga questions about your opinion about different topics... usually related sa American society at culture, kaya dapat ang sagot mo medyo thinking like an American ka...
merong chart or graphs : dedescribe mo yung graph, tapos may mga follow-up questions about it as well
meron din yata about giving directions to a person (kung pano sya pupunta sa isang lugar)
yung huli di ko masyadong maalala, pero parang reporting yata your previous conversation to another person (di ko na talaga sure 'to)

Btw, kinuha ko yung internet-based. Err tapos, medyo nakaka-distract lang yung ibang co-takers dahil naririnig mo silang nagsasalita. Haha :)

Hi, I actually am planning to take the SAT or TOEFL this year to apply for an undergraduate degree to other Asian (HK, Japan or Singapore) or US Colleges...
I was wondering if any of you know where I can ask help or find information about taking the SAT/TOEFL tests here in Metro Manila (location, deadlines etc...)
Kung meron bang links or what...
Baka kasi malipasan ng deadline this year and kakailanganin nanaman ng isa pang taon.
I hope you guys could help me about my queries. Thank you! :)
