you mean transactions between two businesses?
the primary reason for this is the inability of any single company to make its own inputs for all of its operating needs. that's why you need farmers and manufacturers of intermediate goods to supply your basic raw materials, manufacturers of related goods for your support needs (ex: machinery, spare parts). Also, transport of goods/services from one producer to a user usually cannot be arranged by either of the two. they need a middle man who has the resources to buy the needed goods in bulk, to store them in a warehouse, and to transport them to any user who needs any of their goods in stock.
let's take the local paper industry. the local paper miller produce the following types of paper in either rools or large sheets: newsprint, bond, book, computer paper, grey cardboard and kraft paper (for corrugated cardboards). notice these are the types we often consume in large amounts.
the remainder (there must be hundreds of other paper types) are imported by (you guessed it) importers.
so the above two are your primary sources. the paper may go directly to users who have their own system to 'convert' the rolls of paper. this includes the large publishers and large manufacturers who can transform rolls of paper into packaging material.
the vast majority of paper produced by local millers and brought in by inporters are taken by converters. these guys take the paper rolls and can cut, fold, past, glue, stitch, sometimes print the paper into various items. these include reams of bond paper, continuous forms, envelopes, folders, notebooks, logbooks, etc.
these converters then sell them in bulk to distributors (your middle men) who then sell them to the retailers, like national bookstore and even to your sari-saris.
