well it depends on the opportunity... if i can bring my relatives and my love..why not...but without them....i would rather choose to stay here... maybe i can go there just for work and it will be for a year or two only..... I love Philippines so much! I'm still hoping for the PROGRESS AND PEACE!

if u believe that ur existence here on earth is a gift from God, im sure He did not just make u a Filipino and let u live in Philippines when u can be an American in the beginning. im sure there's a reason, uniqueness and beauty of being one and living in the country. with faith in God, u must respect that.

yeah, sure. it wouldnt really be "permanent" in my case since i like traveling. and in my field, i can take my work with me naman anywhere i go eh as long as i have a PC/laptop and an internet connection. if i moved to the US, I'd still visit my family and friends back here in the philippines every once in a while. i'm not really one of those i-want-to-be-with-my-family types, except when it's my own already :)

:) I've lived here for quite a while, own my condo in the Gold Coast downtown Chicago, I've got a great job with a multinational company, My savings are quite substantial, but if my company asks me to go back to the Philippines with all the benefits that I get now, 4 weeks paid vacation, free medical, dental, optical insurance, quarterly bonus, stock options, and also be paid in us dollars, I'll there in a flash....I'm still single and still dating a lot till I find my true l.

siguro magdadalawang isip ako , i really like to live here kung okey sana yung mga oppurtunity na dumadating. pero if the opportunity knocks at masmalaki or 10 times better than i have in here bakit hindi.

im just being practical and true to my self. its an opportunity, why not, and beside pag nandoon na ako eh pwede naman akong bumalik sa pinas eh, kahit pabalik balik pa.

eh kung ikaw ang nandito at gustuhin mo mang makapunta sa US may magagawa ka ba?

minsanan lang ang mga ganyang bagay , why not try it out or grab the blessing. its a gift from God.... :) :) :)

I used to work at the U.S. Embassy Seafront Compound on Roxas Blvd. Among the entitlements of local employee-nationals with sufficient length of service was that we could elect to be considered for immigrant status.

It didn't appeal to me because of what I saw as unsavory treatment of us locals right in our own backyard, which hinted at even worse scenarios we could expect in the U.S. But over the years I learned that what I'd seen might be more the exception than the rule, and one could gain respect if one deserved it.

just wanna thank everyone whose posted so far.

well, for me, if i was faced with that dilemma. obviously, my kneejerk reaction would be a big "NO". i mean, how could i possibly leave the country that i have lived and loved with for years.

but then again, a reality check would dictate that comfortalble living here in the pinas is a longshot. The smartest people end up working as government employees, with wages thats equivalent to a mcdonalds cashier in the states.

id go.

personally I'd like to see the US but to live there...permanently? I've heard enough stories from my friends. Oo nga, magandang sweldo, lalo na P46-$1 na!, pero sobrang tambak naman daw sa trabaho. Pati homesick na homesick na daw sila. If I was to live abroad permanently, I'd rather go to Europe...mas mayaman ang kultura nila doon.

i love this country of ours to pieces, pero i also need to be realistic, this country is going to the dogs......

the leaders who ought to be inspiring us to help them to empower the whole nation are the same people who corrupt and deceive us. pollution is at an all time-high, and the criminals dont seem to be afraid of the government, (probably because most of the crimimals do come from the government.)

TUMPAK KA DYAN KABAYAN!

We are going GLOBAL and when you think of Filipino Society, it doesn't necessarily mean the Pinoys sa Pinas...it could mean Pinoys sa merika, europe o middle east...I'm proud to be a Pinoy but living in US doesn't make me less Pinoy.

If I have to live the rest of my life as a human being, I would rather enjoy the rest of it living in peace, stability, opportunity in all my endeavors. With the current situation now in our country, I don't think I have the luxury of time to experience the EDSA traffic, flood, mountainous garbage, corrupt govt, high-priced commodities,(all thorough these years..ganoon pa rin- walang pagbabago) and watching the stupid President delivering stupid messages.

here's something i read on a reputable mag....

if the migration rate of the filipino's continue, then they will be the second largest ethnic minority in the united states by the year 2040, second to caucasians.

is'nt that unbelievable???? oh my gosh, in forty years time, mas marami pang mga pinoy sa tate kesa sa mga blacks, or sa mga hapon, or sa mga intsik!!!!!!

is that a good thing or a bad thing????

so sick...
a lot of people wanted to migrate for some reason right? pero this is so frustrating for those here pa lang na gustong magpunta dun... matatamaan ang ego... pero honestly i can't blame the people who really wants to go work and live there...
yes it's true there's no place like home... but the big money's not here... some pinoys go there make ipon then go back here... pero yung ibang hindi marunong mag-ipon... dun na lang... it's true that in the states, money is easy... pero it's easy if you work for it... kung tatamad tamad ka, gutom den ang abot mo! pero come to think of it, it applies here ren naman sa pinas ah... if you want money, you have to work for it.. yung nga lang, you have to REALLY WORK HAAAARRRDDDDD FOR IT.... sad but true...

NOPE. Ive been here in the US for more than a year and believe me- its not so great...and im luckier than some since i have a good job...my apt is free...got a car for free..and basically everything else...people have this misconception that life is easier here...yes, its easy to earn money...but things are expensive here too...if i didnt have all the perks that my company is offering me, and id have to pay for everything myself...i wouldnt be able to enjoy the lifestyle i have right now...here in the US or my lifestyle in manila.....

i was given the opportunity to come live here..and i took it,although i knew that mas masaya in the philippines with all my friends and all that im familiar with..
but with the economy now..i knew it wouldve been better for me to start out here. kahit sa mcdo lang ako magtrabaho, mabubuhay ako!
and its alright..di naman totoo na sobrang lungkot ang buhay dito eh--its just that the people who think that probably had no friends or family out here, kaya ganon!

I would love to work in the US, even for just a short period of time, say, 2 to 3 years. It's a good place to make money for your later years in life. Also, it would be good to take my masters there. However, if you're asking about a permanent migration, I wouldn't want that. I've never seen the US as a place where I can settle down and raise my kids. I wouldn't want to be away from my "family" - and when I say family I mean clan.

:) My position here is not unique, A lot of the fortune 500 companies offer great benefits and with the right experience, education, knowledge. Also startup high tech companies are scrambling to recruit by offering great benefits..So really it all boils down to quality of ones work and you get noticed by your peers and your company's competitors then better opportunities comes along.........By the way, unemployment is less than 8% so competition among company recruitment is fierce..too many jobs not enough experienced people to fill them.......

:( Do I miss my barkada in the phil, yes I do think of them and still write to them, Am I lonely here? Sure am not!!! I go out a lot with my new found friends for dinners, see movies, go to live concerts, so my calender is quite full. I know quite a few people in the building where I live and we go to bars hang out watch the games...Easy to make friends here a lot of pretty girls, blondes, brunettes, red hair, whatever your heart desires.. Will I marry any of them? probably not but does not stop from trying to get inside their panties....ooops, sorry..heh heh...but its soooo good...paaarrrttty!!!with attititude!!!!

Definitely! I've been waiting for the opportunity. I have been there during our concert tour in 8 different States in America, mostly in the East Coast side. That was last November, 1999 and life was so different there. I would have wanted to just stay here in the Philippines because I love my country and I'm proud of being a Filipino. But I doubt if there will be improvements with my life if I'll stay put where I am.

i TOTALLY agree!just a couple of years..to make ipon and get experience.i know of people (in the Phils) who were offered greater salaries and higher positions because they had experience abroad.
also..i wanted to get rid of certain filipino bad habits that we develop..for instance,i just graduated from la salle.its a known fact that kids from the top 3 schools are given priority, right?or that you can just use your connections to get where you wanna go.i didnt want to be like that--life there is so easy kasi so many strings to pull.here, you really have to start low, nawawala yung 'ego.'gets?you take ****,you give ****..you learn from ****!(that's life!)

Like Air Magic said in my thread Trials and Triumphs of Life Abroad, "Pag May Tiyaga may Nilaga"!

But by all means if your life is comfortable and financially stable enough for now and beyond there in Pinas, then why go through all the hardships of relocating to another country...stay there then, right!

Be practical, think REALITY and don't let opportunities pass you by!

If loneliness and homesickness feels like its gonna kill ya when your abroad then you can always take the next plane back home to your family and friends in the Philippines. Simple as that :D Best of luck to you :D

Listen to this!

I just got word from Pinas. My jaw dropped.

One of my relatives, who's parents are PHD American graduates (her mom is a professor at one of the top three universities there and her dad used to be a Chancellor of one of those universities there), who herself just graduated from one of those univerisites as a BS Psychology with HONORS got a contractual 8 month position at an American Based Consulting Firm at a salary of only 7500 pesos/month and she has to drive all the way to Makati for it, which I'm guessing with all the traffic, is pretty far.

DAMMMMMNNNN! That's ony 150 bucks a month. All that hard work in college for $150/month.

Maybe its just that her major was Psych ... wow...but, gosh that is a big let down.

So if ya get the chance to work abroad try it out and see what awaits ya :D

now that the metropolis is threatened by bombers once again, and the impeachment hearings are essentially going down the drain (or atleast i think so), i might as well revive this topic.

O ANO MGA PIPOL, TRIP NYO NA BA TALAGANG LUMAYAS NA DITO SA PINAS AND GO MAKE CHIKA TO UNCLE SAM, OR TALAGANG EVER LOYAL KAYO RITO?????

'ive been given a chance and i have not regretted it ... masaya ang buhay ko sa pilipinas ... nandiyan ang mga barkada, inuman ng walang umaga, sing-along, quezon blvd, etc ... dito, kailangan mo lang ng kunting adjustment .. wala na ang mga gawing ganun .. pero may inuman pa din (but you have to drive) ... may sing-along din, of course ... may mga kaibigan din tayo ... but once you get the hang of it ... mas easier actually ang buhay ... me padala ka pa sa nanay ng "made in america" na kung ano-ano kasama na ang dolyar ... para sa mahilig sa party diyan ... you have the life u want in the big cities but u will always miss pinas ... as for me, habang me paksiw at nilaga or sinigang sa kusina, oks na ako ...

Nope, but I'd jump at the opportunity to do business and have a holiday there! I wouldn't live there because the US is not the most dynamic source economy in recent times. Looking for an opportunity, stay within Asia! That's where the future is! You make stuff - the world buys it! Why go elsewhere? You make fakes and sell them. The US economy would go down dramatically without the support of Asian manufacturers and when China, especially China, gets to a stage of reckoning, then the US may act differently to admitting immigrants...

How about Shanghai or Singapore?

I certainly wouldn't pass up on an opportunity to earn greens in the states (especially if the offer's in NEW YORK!!). I am enamored by the American culture and freedom. But more than that, I am enticed by how much easier it is to earn bigger moohlah abroad. I can compare my salary right now with that of a blue collar worker's in the states. It's so sad (and unfair) that we Pinoys can be more competent than Americans, and yet be only paid an eighth of their earnings. I dunno who to blame... :)

If we're talking of living forever and ever in the U.S. or any other foreign country, though, I'd have to bail. I believe that if you're Filipino, there's no better place to raise children and grow old than in Motherland. I've been exposed to Flips who've grown up in the States and I'm not impressed at all. While it's true that it's not their fault that they were acculturated, still, I don't want to raise my kids anywhere "un-Filipino".

candyrain: I guess that you can blame one thing - the mismanagment of the country by various people in various levels in various offices around the country. I would love to go back to the Philippines and retire, but I would need an incentive that is worth my while and other people's as well. We get paid less because we need to get more greenbacks to straddle our already crappy and basically finanacially-inept government, paying off interest on things that we could have very well developed and managed with the intelligence and the capability of Filipinos. (My example here is the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant!)

I was born and raised in Hong Kong but that didn't make me one bit less of a Filipino. I think it's more of how the parents take it as... It's wherever it goes really - and I know what you mean and how it feels...

You can make some really good money in Shanghai and Singapore, but you need to speak Mandarin! China has a very strong peg to the USD so it will not fluctuate as compared to the Peso or the Rupiah.

Go to that thread! You'll get to read stuff about us growing up elsewhere!

I've been here (w/ my family) in the US for almost 3-yrs. Have moved at least 4x in different states because of the nature of my job. Right now our GC is just around the corner.

But the question do I want to stay here for life? Nope!! I am still longing for the pinipig & nilupak. I still wish to wake-up under the mango/kaimito trees.

As for my kids, that would be their call. As of now, I can see them picking-up the American culture in so fast a manner that it really troubles me. But we try to compensate by raising them as a Filipino family.

Yeah, I hear ya.. I wonder when our local economy will improve, when we will finally stop kissing multinational companies' backsides. When pigs fly? The Pinas in such a sad state of disillusion and mistrust right now... hayyy.. the only hope I see is migration...

About raising kids and all, I think you're right that it all depends on the upbringing and not so much on where you were raised. But don't you think it's less difficult raising a Flip kid with Flip values in the Flip-pines, rather than elsewhere, say America, where everyone else has a different set of moral and cultural values?

On the other hand, though, growing up in the States allow for more independence, assertiveness and decision-making. Oh well...

Yes, you do have a point... I mean, it CAN be very, very comfortable if you have the money to live in the Philippines. I would love to do that and I am hoping to get there sometime soon... But that's still beyond the bend :(

But like my first post - why the USA? Been there and it's nice, but I can't see myself there! Guess that I just got used to be in home turf - Asia!

That is one of the biggest pulls for the USA - good salaries/wages because of the economy! Something that sells for 29.95 gets made in China for maybe 4.00 incl. shipping to the US! (Belive me - that is the amount it costs for something that retails in Home Depot for that amount!) What's left over is for the good wages and the marketing budget! And everybody buys!!!

Amazing!

I, on the other hand, am just dying to go to Americaaaa, Americaaaaa. Not Europe, not Canada, but the States. Why? Refer to my first post on this thread. :D Why NOT Japan or any other Asian country? Maybe it's the cultural diversity in the US that beckons me... and of course, the fact that hip-hop music is way more progressive there than in Asia. :P

By the way, how was it like growing up in Hong Kong? (Or is that a new thread altogether? :) ) I'm just curious cus I've never really come across a Flip who was raised that side of the world.

Well, I guess you have a very valid point about diversity in the USA. Just funny because I feel quite at home in the West Coast because of all the Asian-Americans there! Just love it!

Oh definetely i would not stay her forever man..you gotta be kidding me..if a lot of peeps think that it's all good here in America, they gotta think about cuz there is no place like home..It's boring here if you come to think of it people in the Philippines be using their stylish celfones and just kickin it....yah know *** i mean??
When i went to the Philippines and it was just way diff. than here in the states..Diff people and their just cool.
here in the U.S. there are lots of racist peeps and a lot of snobbish people too. I wish the Philippines had better economoy and better working stability. In the Philippines you could do things spontaneously, but here in the U.S. everything and everyday is being done routine. It's like you have an agenda throughout your day..But oh wells i'm just finishing my good education here and maybe start or i mean continue my moms good and booming business there in the Phiilippines..i'm just havin some fun here first then its time to go to work when i'm there..well that's all i gotta say..thanks guys!!! yun lang talga ang malaking problema dito sa pinas eh, kahit magtrabaho ka ng magtrabaho ng magtrabaho, nakakafrustrate na theres also a person on the other end of the world whose merely picking his nose and is getting a higher salary than you do.

hindi ba mejo baliktad ata yon??? the education system here in the pinas, i firmly believe, is way better than that in the states. when its time to go to work though, wag ka ng umasa dito. saka ka na lumipad sa states.

i would definitely stay in the US if an oppurtunity came, mahirap kayang magka green card noh?! especially kung wala ka naman masyadong relatives staying there and sa hirap ng life here sa philippines i really want to work abroad. i would really want to work in US mas malapit and ang culture mas ok compared sa ibang countries. like ko sa west coast ok ang weather! if ever stable na ko dun and earning na i would like to spend it with my family... maybe dun ko mahanap yung aking knight and shining armor na di ko mahanaphanap sa pinas... ;) syempre i prefer pinoy para mas ok! :)

no = 15
maybe = 13
go back = 7
other than = 4
- +- 50% na tama
i sort of pick up some stuff like :
** homesickness - barkada,family.. dahil ba laging nakapulupot ang pinoy sa pamilya ?
** mas magaling ang schooling sa pinas kaysa america ? huh ! what ? ur kidding right ?

Only if you have lived a fairly equal amount of time in the US and the Philippines could you be able to make a wiser and less biased comparison between the two countries!

I have made my choice and I believe it was (and still is) the wisest and the best decision I have ever made not only for my own life but also for the future of my children and their generation. I have chosen to live in the US!

Somebody said, " There's no place like home! " True, but who to say that your country of birth is the only one who can qualify as your home?

I can always go back to the Philippines whenever I want.
Can you say the same if you want to go to the US?
Some of you can, but definitely, most of you can't!

It' your life. You choose what you make of it. :)
