Do you draw, paint, or sculpt?
If you do, please share your background right here!
I paint in acrylics and watercolours mostly. However, I have recently developed a love for oils. I also work in a variety of other media including mixed media and batik.
I don't have any formal training in art, save for some workshops in the Philippines (1 class), in Singapore (2 classes and 1 10-session private lesson), and in Malaysia (1 one-day crash course).
What about you?

Been interested in cartoons and comics eversince forever, that's what drove me to write short stories and create comics of my own. It's been ages ever since I last painted and sketched serious subjects since they were required in College. But even then I started concentrating on cartooning.
I'm more inclined to appreciating "dirty" and chaotic art like those of Bill Sienkiewicz and Sam Keith among others (although my art is very far from it).
I had previous formal trainings in art since childhood, a scriptwriting class in UST, etc. etc... I'm still on the process of ever learning though.

freakster, how did you know you suck? i always believe that you should just go for it no matter what people say!
kartoonista, i'd love to see your cartoons! maybe you can share them here? i enjoy doodling cartoons, but i know i have loooong way to go in that department. ;)
Thanks again and I look forward to seeing your work.

sometimes admitting u suck is a good start. Like in basketball, ther are standards of greatness. so is in art. a person that cant draw anything (representational) but can only mimic abstract aRt is a sucky person.
crazy_frenzy
Sep 26, 2002, 02:47 PM
i think i also suck, because i cant draw the things that i want to draw. i can't put my ideas on paper. if i can't draw what i want, then i would quit on that particular drawing. that makes me a bad artist... in my opinion....

That's cool. I keep jumping from subject to subject too. However, I do a lot of figure drawing (nudes), still life, interiors, florals, and landscapes. I'm trying to learn experimental work using mixed media and/or collage lately too. It's fun!
I guess it depends on what you want your work to be. If you want it photorealistic or realistic, and you are unable to, then it's true that you must keep on working towards that goal. And, even if you work in a non-representational way, it is still important to improve your draftsmanship. Drawing and sketching is a MUST! ;) Just keep at it and see how your work improves!

Hi again freakster! Hmmm... "standards of greatness" is too vague to qualify. And, I would hesitate to compare art-making to dribbling and shooting balls. But I know what you mean. ;)
Greatness... Only time would be able to tell if a painting is great or not. You would be unable to do so right there and then. And, how people would accept this is generally out of our hands.
However, there IS one thing we can control: our ability to realise what we want for ourselves as we paint, draw, or sculpt.
As I mentioned earlier, yeah, draftsmanship (leaning towards representational and/or traditional work) is VERY important. Someone who claims to love to paint, draw, etc. who says otherwise is only fooling him or herself. Just as it is foolish to believe that ONLY representational art is acceptable.
However, in order to understand non-representational art, it means you must first have an understanding of representational art. As they say, 'In order to break the rules, you must first learn the rules...'
'Mimicking' anything - be it abstract art or realistic work - is NOT at all in the league of visual arts.

I tried posting the links here too but they don't seem to work. Hmmm... maybe one day I can show them to you. :D

what do you mean by mimicking?? do you mean this by copying a work exactly??

Shidomi: Sure, just share what you've got. We'd love to see your stuff...
Kartoonista: Yes, I hope you'll be able to share some of your work too some time. And, yeah, it's true that art is a "reinterpretation" of real life... But I suppose it's just one aspect of art. It's just TOO difficult to ascertain what real "art" is. That's why I'm working on the concept that I just draw, paint, sculpt what I like... as best as I possibly can. And hopefully, somewhere along the way, someone (or a few people!!) would agree that I'm doing a good job at it. :)
Crazy Frenzy: I guess mimicking can come in many forms. Be it copying someone's work exactly... or just following someone's interpretation of what art is without learning to think for yourself. I mean, we all learn from other people... I LOVE looking at people's artworks and studying what works and what doesn't FOR ME. Then, I try and see if I can learn approaches and techniques... and I begin to use them MY WAY. Our paintings and drawings need not be like Van Gogh's, Da Vinci's, Picasso's, Monet's, Matisse's --- or Amorsolo's. We can study them (in fact, we SHOULD!)... or even copy their work to LEARN from them. But being able to reproduce someone's artwork doesn't make you good. Ultimately, our work has to be OURS - as unique as our fingerprints and DNA.

i've been doodling, drawing and painting since i was 6, and i've been taking lessons on and off since i was 8. when i was 10, i joined this 5 day summer workshop at my dad's office, and was awarded best in figure drawing. during my 3rd and 4th yr in HS, i took visual arts as an elective, and i was a staff artist for the school paper during my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year. i took lessons from ER tagle on my second yr of HS, and from sena before my freshman year in college, and i was awarded most outstanding student.
i prefer using oil pastels, acrylic, and pencils, since they are easier to use and blend. and i'm a sucker for modern art ^_^ .
i'm hoping to take up a second degree, or at least some art subjects, from UST or st. scho (my HS) after i finish my degree in lit at lasalle. but my first choice was UP fine arts, but my parents, after seeing UP, had second thoughts.

i started drawing when i was 4 or 5. naalala ko pa first cartoon character na na-drawing ko was garfield :D
lagi akong sinasali ng mga teacher ko nung pre- school and gradeschool sa mga drawing contests kaso nang tumagal di na ako sumasali kasi puro lalaki yung mga contestants. nahihiya ako kasi baka isipin nila tibo ako.
ngayon, i draw as a hobby. i usually use pencil or charcoal. i didn't have any formal trainings---that's why sometimes i also think i suck.
i draw almost anything. minsan kung ano na lang mapagtripan kong i-draw-- pati crumpled paper-- mostly still objects and portraits ang ginagawa ko. pero lately puro portraits na lang kasi laging nagpapagawa mga classmates ko sa akin.
i always wanted to take fine arts kasi gusto ko rin namang i-enhance pa lalo ang talent ko but my mom didn't like the idea. so i ended up taking marketing instead. so far, wala naman akong regrets sa kinuha kong course. maybe after i graduate from marketing saka na ako magaaral ng finearts (hopefully sa UP).
o nga pala, i also tried painting before kaso sobrang tagal kong makagawa ng isang painting. kaya hindi ako masyadong nakakapag-paint. but i really want to learn. buti na lang may art appreciation class kami, pero sa 4th yr ko pa makukuha yun e...
yun lang... :)

Ako I use pencils, ink, and colored pencils. I wish I could learn how to use other mediums but well anyway, I think I should learn how to master sketching first.
I never had any formal trainings although I attended one summer workshop in Ayala Museum.
I usually draw anime characters, portraits and caricatures. Right now, I am trying to learn how to draw the human anatomy ...try lang. :hiya:

unfortunately, i don't have any that are available digitally. but i've been experimenting with photo editing (on and off) since 3rd yr HS. hopefully i'll be able to create digital works from scratch... if i have the time that is.

I used to draw and paint alot. Comic fan as a kid, y'know? But lately I've found that I can't seem to draw jack. I've been in VisComm so long and kept using the computer to do plates that I have now lost my gift. *cries*
Anyway if any of you want to see how I used to draw just go to http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/d/o/domingo2/domingo2.html

actually first choice ko talaga ang UP fine arts, pero di ako pumasa/pinayagan dahil:
1. nadisappoint yung parents ko sa itsura ng up
2. feeling nila (parents ko) di ako makaka fit in
3. dahil sa "social background" ko
ayoko ng ust dahil sa location at may uniform, at ayoko naman mag aral sa HS ko na naman (st scho all the way?!)... kaya sa lasalle ako nag aral (lit 2nd yr)

Hello junkie09, frenchkisser, JakobGaidin and D_O_M_ako .
So great to see so many people sharing about your interest and experiences in art-making. 'Just when I thought there's not that many here sa PEx...
junkie09: Are you from UST? I'm a UST grad and I had 4th year art appreciation for one sem. I enjoyed it... but it's NOT enough. ;) Well, it doesn't matter how long you finish a painting anyway, basta matapos. And, the more you paint, the faster you'll paint.
frenchkisser: I've often been told that starting with pencils is a good way to improve your draftsmanship. It also helps you become a better painter. But, if you want to try other mediums, just go for it! Art is NOT a linear process. ;)
JakobGaidin: Sayang you stopped drawing. I, too, picked up drawing from comics. :) Any chance you'll try again sometime?
D_O_M_ako : We do have another thread with some of our paintings posted there... I look forward to seeing your work too! Kaya, post ka rin ha?
Shofixti: Oo nga eh. Ang saya 'no? ;) Sana magkaroon na tayo ng sarili nating forum on arts/painting 'no? <<BIG hint to the almighty moderators>>

I paint and draw. I love using watercolor. I also use chalk pastels, charcoal, and pencils for my drawings and sketches. I'm a fine arts graduate. Sometimes when I feel like it i use my airbrush too. I also like sculpture and print making, especially rubbercuts. I love using terracota as a medium. :D I don't like using oil that much. I hate the way it feels when it gets to my hands. Right now I am in a rut. I havent painted for months already. I guess I havent been inspired lately. SOmetimes I just can't force myself to paint. I need to be inspired or motivated.

Hello Soraya!
Thanks for sharing and joining in. Wow! You do have a lot of mediums. I've never tried sculpture but I've played around with polymer clay a little. Just exploring.
I know what you mean about oil. It's soooo messy! But I have to admit, the more I use it, the better I like it. I'm learning to cope with the mess and the stink. ;) But for now, I'm a really into acrylics.
What do you think will help you get out of that rut? I know how horrible it could be! Some things I try to do when I'm in a rut:
1) Paint using a different medium... (especially something I've never tried before)
2) Paint using bigger brushes and bigger canvases/papers...
3) Read lots of art books and look at lots of art online and in real life (museums, galleries, etc.)
4) Scribble and doodle... not expecting anything brilliant...
5) Do collage!
6) Look at some of my old paintings, drawings, and sketches - and evaluate them in different ways...
7) Go to an art shop! (This often works! ;))
I probably could list a bit more... but I hope this is enough to spark your ideas! Do share some of your work here...

Maybe your teacher meant that your style is more opaque (as poster paint and oil are opaque mediums). Watercolour is a transparent medium.
Do you have a scan of your paintings?

Nope. I've been studying art privately with different artists (Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia to date) and attending workshops/classes particularly in Singapore's renowned art college, La Salle-SIA.
I've also been studying art theory/history and the work of the masters through books and personal visits to various galleries and museums in different parts of the world. :D
