Hello Guys! I beg to differ on a previous statement by Lara and Jensie. It's very evident since someone very close to me work with Bb. Pilipinas. Pitoy as what have been mention is very pakialamero and very mapapel. Even known fashion show directors knows of Pitoy's insecurities. He also didn't want other Filipinos designing the gowns of Philippine Representatives if its not him. This is not a joke but a fact.

It seems the Bahamas will face tough competition for the right to stage the Miss Universe pageant in their shores...
CHINA IS ALSO DEAD SERIOUS IN HOSTING MISS UNIVERSE 2004!!! :whatthe:
MISS CHINA BEATS BAN TO TAKE ON WORLD
By Elisabeth Rosenthal in Beijing
July 17 2002
When Zhuo Ling was declared second runner-up in the Miss Universe contest in Puerto Rico in May, the tears and the tiaras masked a secret.
Because Chinese officials do not approve of beauty pageants, her "Miss China" title had been bestowed in an underground competition, held despite official threats and bans.
In fact, the Miss China contest nearly did not happen, after officials in the southern city of Enping raided the auditorium. Ms Zhuo, the first contestant, had just come on stage in a bathing suit, when officials rushed the podium, shooed off contestants and told organisers they had broken the law because cultural events required permits.
Determined to have a queen, the judges and contestants sneaked back to restage the event that night and awarded Ms Zhuo the crown.
"This is 2002, we've joined the World Trade Organisation and we've been selected to hold the 2008 Olympics," said Shi Sizhi, a private Beijing businessman who organised the Miss China contest with the approval of the Miss Universe organisation in New York.
"All I'm trying to do is to bring Miss Universe to China. What's to be afraid of here?"
There have been no beauty contests in China since the Communist takeover in 1949, and some officials are still nervous about approving such an event, arguing that compared with modelling which involves skill, it is bourgeois.
A more important issue could be having control over the nation's image, with many Chinese officials unable to come to terms with yielding power over the choice of such a representative to a private group.
Mr Shi understood he had the go-ahead when culture officials, who refused to issue the legally required approval on the one hand, offered the promoter an olive branch. He said they told him: "We won't criticise you, but keep it quiet and don't make it a big deal." To comply, he had scheduled the Miss China pageant in the obscure city of Enping in Guangdong Province, keeping publicity to a minimum.
So it was something of a miracle when Ms Zhuo appeared from an underground competition in China to take third place on stage in Puerto Rico, trailing only Miss Panama and the new Miss Universe, Miss Russia. But with her surprise win beamed to television sets all over the world, it became increasingly difficult to keep her existence quiet.
Mr Shi now hopes Ms Zhuo's victory will help bring a Miss Universe finals to China by 2004.

yep annwen is an atenean. :) i still see her around campus.
btw, it seems that sweden is an early favorite nga and basing from the trend of miss intl winners, there is a big probability that she might make it. miss int'l winners are usually mestiza or caucasian (recently). but im still rooting for miss colombia. i wonder why she wasn't sent to miss u instead.
the last miss sweden who did well, as far as i can remember was dominique forsberg during the miss u 94 here in manila. she was in the top 10. most miss sweden are low profiled and not really hyped.
btw, have you seen the latest SMB commercial? ganda ng mga models. how can they be encouraged to join bb pilipinas? sayang sila. :(

Consuelo Guzman Parra was 1st runner-up during the Señorita Colombia 2001 pageant. It has long been a tradition of this pageant to send the 1st runner-up to Miss International. Had Consuelo won the crown, she should've seen action in San Juan instead.

Best Personality: Northern Marianas without a doubt. Most girls are very nice and friendly this year, there haven't been any fights or conflicts among 2002 candidates. Yugoslavia, Czech and Slovak Republics, Nicaragua and Brazil are also among the nicest girls around.
Best Figure: Dominican Republic has the best body. Others who have incredible bodies are Spain, Venezuela, Japan, Colombia, Czech Republic and Turkey.
Most Fashionable: Spain dresses amazingly well. Also up to date with fashion are Turkey, Hong Kong, Colombia, Venezuela and Lebanon. Senegal, Thailand and India are also very fashionable, although not "westernized". They display the fashion of their own countries, which is very fascinating.
Most Beautiful Face: there are many, with Turkey, Spain and Sweden being the best. Others are Russia, UK, Poland, Thailand, Japan, Korea, France, Czech Republic, Moldova, Germany and Finland.
Most Poised and Elegant: Spain, Canada, Curacao, Thailand and Senegal.

Hi guys!
Latest news on Oxana!
Back on the beat
by:
Konstantin Trifonov
ST PETERSBURG:
Russia's ousted Miss Universe faced the public yesterday for the first time since her return from the United States, slamming contest organisers and denying reports she had grown too fat.
Oxana Fedorova, draped in black silk and diamond jewellery, said she would commit herself to her career as a police officer after being stripped of her title for failing to carry out her responsibilities.
But the 24-year-old sharp-shooting policewoman, the first Russian to hold the title, denied reports she had gained weight, become pregnant or married secretly after being elected in May.
"Whoever saw me before can say I did not put on seven kg. And of course, I am not pregnant," Fedorova said in Russia's second city, flanked by her police force superior.
"I dream of becoming a mother, and maybe I will - it would be wonderful, but not now."
And she had not acquired a husband. "This is simply not true," she said. "Anyone can check this very simply by asking at the registry office."
Fedorova, replaced this week by Miss Panama in a New York ceremony, said the Miss Universe contract had been unclear and made available to her only in English.
"I did not in fact sign any contract - I was sent one in English after I won the contest," she said. "I am Russian and normally I should have been sent a contract in English and Russian, as far as I understand."
The dark-haired Fedorova, who sparked a wave of patriotic pride when she won the title, said she considered herself no more than an ordinary Russian girl.
"I count myself among regular girls who were luckier or unluckier, as the case may be," she said.
Fedorova's supervisor, the head of the St Petersburg Interior Ministry University, said he was glad to see the beauty queen return to her studies. She is due to defend her thesis later this year.
"I hold Oxana in very high regard as a professional policewoman," Viktor Salnikov said.
She herself chose to give up show business and to return to work on her dissertation."
Fedorova told the conference that her removal had been rooted in a dispute with organisers over a two-month break for her to defend her doctorate.

Russian Oxana Fedorova, former Miss Universe, speaks at a news conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. Fedorova, who was replaced as Miss Universe this week, on Friday repeated her contention that she gave up the crown and said her first inkling that she should step down was when she was asked uncomfortable questions by a U.S. radio host noted for sex-intensive discussions.

Pak not to allow 'Miss Pakistan' contest pageant (Times of India)
ISLAMABAD: Shocked by a Pakistani woman participating in the Miss International Beauty contest to be held in Tokyo, the Pakistan government has ordered its diplomats in Japan to contact the organisers and try to bar her from using the country's name. Soon after photographs of 21-year old Neelan Noorani appeared in newspapers on Friday, appearing in the preview of the Tokyo beauty pageant as "Miss Pakistan", the government asked its mission in Japan to advise the organisers to stop her from wearing Pakistan's banner.
"The government has moved to save the nation from this disgrace," The News daily said in a front page story titled, 'Beauty queen or an ultimate disgrace', even while carrying the picture of Noorani taking part in the pageant. "Miss Noorani, seen as a disgrace by many Pakistanis, was wearing ceremonial strap prominently inscribing "PAKISTAN", the daily said.
According to the organisers 51 girls would compete for the Miss International crown on September 30 in Tokyo.
Expressing shock over Noorani taking part in the contest, Tariq Janjua, the Secretary Culture, Sports and Tourism was quoted by the newspaper as saying that the government had nothing to do with "this shameful development." "We cannot allow this," Janjua said adding that such contests were in total "contrast" to the social and cultural values of Pakistan. "Our religion, Islam, also disapproves all such acts," Janjua said.

Another Atenean babe who captivated me was Maradee de Guzman.
She competed during Bb. Pilipinas 1998, and even bagged the Miss Slimmers World special award.
Unfortunately, she didn't advance to the Final 5. :mecry:
The next year, her equally-gorgeous sister Chadrose competed. (My schoolmate at UA&P at that time.)
She bagged the Miss Friendship and Miss Red Bull Supreme Energy special awards.
Unfortunately, she didn't make it to the Top 10 cut. :(

Pakistan's short history in pageants lasted for only 5 days. Neelam left the contest today after her government complained about her participation in Miss International. Looking at this picture, where Miss Pakistan and Miss Israel appear together, we can see that Miss Pakistan did her job: she promoted peace. She left in tears, but should be proud of her accomplishment.

Comments:
1. I cannot chose between Venezuela and United Kingdom. They're both experienced and very pretty. Either one will make a very good queen. Runners-up would have to be Spain, Turkey, Colombia, China and Dominican Republic.
2. I love Miss Senegal,Mame Mballo. However, considering that this IS Miss International, it is wise not to put her in my top 15. I hope she competes for Miss Earth.
3. Our very own, Kritine Alzar should make waves, although this year's batch is relatively competitive, I hope she breaks our 3 year dry spell.
4. The photo of USA with UK is by far my favourite. It made me realize that Mary Elizabeth can very well bring back a semifinalist for USA in Miss International after 12 years.
5. Lebanon is gorgeous! Let's hope she doesn't get overlooked this time.
6. If China makes it, then Miss Earth will be the last frontier for this country.

Jensie_G, Power(Bubbles), and Lara_D: I think we can sum it all that the real problem is the "politics" in the Binibini system. It may be true power(bubbles) na si Pitoy ang dahilan and it may be true that Madame Stella Araneta is the one Lara_D, but hindi talaga maiiwasan na within the system may pulitikang nagaganap. And who's to blame? All those involved.
In defense of Power(Bubbles)...
Eto na lang ang sagutin natin...Kung si Joey Espino na nagtrain sa Binibini from 1993-1996 ay umalis at kailanman ay di pa nagpapadala ng candidates para sa Binibini na lumaban naman sa Supermodel of the World Philippine Search, what does that tell us? O, eto pa...Kung si Renee Salud na matagal ng nagpapdala ng natatanging mga kandidata sa BInibini ay tumigil and just recently was helping the BInibini's competitors, what does that indicate?
In defense of Lara_D and Jensie_G...
It may be true that yes Madame Stella has the say on every candidates kasi siya yung "big boss" dito. I know kasi best friend ko si Jed yung sister niya (Mildred Quiambao). Hindi ba siya rin naman ang dahilan kung bakit nagpalit agad ng gown si Nina, Miriam, and other candidates including Mia Tiglao. Hay!!! Pulitika nga naman.
Final Statements:
It maybe true that even the organizers havethe right to select ladies who should vie for the top3 crowns, but I must say that it is very unethical for them to dictate the judges that their bets should place high even if there is someone better.
We want to make 2003 as the grandslam year for the Philippines in Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International. But if politics is still innate in the pageant system then why do we still hope if that hope cannot be attained anymore.

We totally have a contrasting opinion. I think the way it was judge was totally fair. Though I'm having some reservations on Philippines. It think it's her walk (seems a little weird), but she can project very well. I like her hair. Though amongst the 5, I think the order should've been
1. Lithuania
2. Serbia
3. USA
4. Belgium
5. Australia
But I think it would've been nicer to see Poland or Eritrea in the 5. I wonder if any of the girls who joined the competition will be going to the pageant level in their respective country. I also like Malaysia by the way.

Nanuod din ako ng Ford Supermodel of the World contest! I agree with the winner from Lithuania! But USA shouldn't have been the first runner-up! She's ok though but Serbia and Belgium deserved a higher placing! About Marjay naman, weird nga yung lakad nya! Pero may potential nga! Si Malaysia naman, ok din! Silang dalawa lang yung Asians na nakapasok sa Top 20 right?!
I'm so happy for La Salle! Grabe, kawawa naman si Sta. Maria! Natapakan sa mukha! :ayaw: Pero astig pa rin game nya! ANIMO La Salle!!

I think Marjay can join Bb once she's on the right age. She's only 14 when she competed. And yes, she and Malaysia were the only Asians. I like Eritrea, Poland and Montenegro

What happened to the following delegates? :whatthe: :wondering:
BRAZIL
CANADA
CHINA

ECUADOR
HAWAII
ISRAEL
NORTHERN MARIANAS
PHILIPPINES
PUERTO RICO
RUSSIA
SWEDEN
UNITED KINGDOM
VENEZUELA
Some of my personal thoughts...
-This has got to be the most unpredictable Miss International pageant ever in history...
-Christina Sawaya and outgoing queen Malgorzata Rozniecka share one big thing in common-- both of them were originally set to represent their respective countries in Miss Universe, but fate sent them to Japan instead...
-Cynthia Lander breaks Venezuela's flawless Miss International semi-final streak which has been ongoing since 1992. Tsk tsk...
-It's the 4th consecutive time that our country failed to make it to the semi-finals... The last Filipina to make it was Collette Centeno Glazer back in '98...
-Korea wins Best National Costume for the 2nd time in a row...

Too bad that Tintin lost in the Miss International Pageant as well as Cinthia and Juliet-Jane considering that they have become "veterans" already in the pageant scene.
But the thing is ... Lebanon bagged two titles in a row this year ousting top Filipina contenders... Maricar Balagtas and Kristine Alzar.
Anyways, here is the result for Model of the World competition:
www.modelfotheworld.com
The new winner of Model of The World 2002 is the stunning Model of The World Lebanon, Cyrine Abdel Nour.
The stunning professional model, Cyrine dazzled the judges with her modelling portfolio, catwalk style, stunning good looks and stage presence and clinched the prestigious Model of The World 2002 title in what has been one of the toughest Model of The World 2002 Competitions ever.
All of the 34 contestants were of a very high standard and all deserved to win but at the end of the day there could only be one winner and Cyrine was picked as this years Model of The World 2002 winner.
The contestant who took the title of Model of The World 2002 1st Runner up was the beautiful Estella Mazonaite of Lithuania.
The 1m76 model took time from studying for her English Bachelors Degree in order to take part in Model of The World 2002 and the 90-60-90 stunner was glad she did when she managed to run away with the second place position.
With her blond hair and blue eyes and superb modelling ability Estella impressed the judges and was a firm favourite in the competition from day one.
The winner of the Model of The World 2002 2nd Runner Up Position was the gorgeous Model of The World Croatia, Anja Dragovich.
Another professional Model, Anja had a unique look and modelling style all of her own which made her one of the firm favourites in the running for the Model of The World 2002 title.
The actual Model of the World 2002 World Final Competition Show was a huge success and Full news and pictures from the Model of The World 2002 World Final Competition will be available tomorrow and will be sent out during the course of the day.

Congratulations LEBANON - Model of the World 2002 and Miss International 2002.
Hay naku!!! That's true Fidele na kakaibang maglakad even pa nung lumaban siya sa Supermodel of the Wordl Philippine Seach. That is what you would call a "majorette" walk kasi napaka-evident kapag nanuod kang live sa TV. Buti na lang at sa paglipas ng panahon ay gumanda na rin ang lakad niya.
Next pala is that Supermodel of The World Philippines candidate Charisse Arayi will not be walking down the ramp on Westin for the Supermodel of the World Philippines 2002 together with other finalists kasi kasali po siya sa BODYSHOTS 2002 na sabay gaganapin sa October 29. The Supermodel event is exclusive nga lang while may tickets naman ang BODYSHOTS.

She was originally set to compete in Miss Universe 2002 too. However, she opted to stay home instead because she "did not want to compete in a pageant where Miss Israel is"... Political reason...

xysher: Hi there! I share the exact sentiments!
This has got to be the most unpredictable Miss International pageant ever in history. Like I said before, Venezuela's flawless semi-final streak, which has been ongoing since 1992, was finally broken!
I also agree with your comments on Carla Tricoli. She is definitely boring... Walang ka-spark spark.... For now... We never know what Magaly Febles can do... Let's just wait for her makeover come 2003. I'm so excited na... :bounce:

THE MISS BEHIND MISS UNIVERSE
An interesting interview with the Top woman herslelf, Paula Shuggart. Interviewed by the Miss Universe Critic
I WAS STILL in San Francisco last July 26th when Carlos Fernandez, President Shugart's executive assistant, informed me via e-mail that I could meet with the President within two weeks. I called Carlos and arranged for an interview at the Miss Universe Organization headquarters in New York City. I returned to Boston on August 5th, with only a few days to recuperate from a long and tiring train ride. Then early Friday morning, August 9th, I got up at 6 a.m., took a shower, had a quick breakfast, dressed up, grabbed my backpack and had my partner drive me to the bus depot. I made sure I had all the essentials with me - a notebook, a pen, my digital camera, my cellphone, my wallet, and a new SONY mini-tape recorder.
MY BUS arrived in New York's Chinatown at around 1:15 p.m. From the depot, I walked several blocks until I could hail a cab that took me to a reputable vegetarian restaurant where I had the most delicious curry-flavored seitan with brown rice and spring rolls served with iced green tea. I thought since I had at least an hour to kill, I might as well enjoy a healthy, vegan meal. From my table, I could see speeding motorists and passers-by rushing to go places. This is New York City. Everyone rushes. Not me. I was savoring my meal too sluggishly that I almost lost track of the time. Then, I quickly gulped down my last morsel, drank my tea to its very last drop, paid the bill, and hailed a cab to meet the president at the Miss Universe Organization headquarters at the Avenue of the Americas. While in the cab, I checked my cellphone for messages, and surely enough, Carlos had called around twenty minutes earlier to confim the interview and to advise me that the President's schedule was running very tight.
The cab stops in front of a nondescript building. I get off the cab, pay the driver, walk past a revolving door onto the lobby. I introduce myself to the security desk and sign my name on the visitor's log sheet. When I enter the elevator, a building personnel carrying stacks of mail sees me press 16 and asks, "Do you work for Miss Universe?" I replied, "I wish!" Obviously, he assumes that I would volunteer delivering the mail myself. The elevator door opens. I step out, do a 1/4 turn to the left, and approached a wide glass door - the portal to the Miss Universe Organization office. Nobody seems to be home, not even the receptionist on whose desk I see a monitor displaying the company website. I ring the doorbell once, twice. Finally, a svelte petite blond wearing the tightest white trousers south of Yonkers opens the door and greets me.
"Are you Rafael? I'm Paula Shugart. Come on in. Please have a seat. I'll be right back."
A few minutes later, the President summons me to her office - a square room dominated by curtainless glass windows. The desk is strategically placed in the center of the room. Framed photos of past Miss Universes are perched on the window ledge. A stack of videos sits on top of the television set. A few framed art work are still waiting to be hung. The City looms in the background.
"Can I get you something?
"I'd love a glass of water."
La Presidenta returns with two glasses and a pitcher of water. She sits behind her desk, all composed, calm and collected. Then I turn on my new mini-cassette recorder.
http://www.missuniversecritic.com/PMS_Photo1.jpg
Who is the real Paula Shugart?
PS: (Laughs) That's a good question! The one that just brought water in? It's funny. I can be very serious. Obviously, with this job… I've been in this job for a year and a half, so I've had a whole different way of looking at things. I was the vice-president of production, and I had twenty years of production experience. As far as who I really am is the person who would go from this show to that show, being responsible, having a good time, but I think that show business is a profession where you don't necessarily have to grow up, a hundred per cent, you can have a good time… A few years ago, I started really living by the motto… live… just be!
Carpe diem. Seize the day!
PS: Yeah. "Just be" is my own little personal thing when my husband and I first got together. It has become sort of a joke with us now. He says, "I know, I know. Don't worry about tomorrow. Just be!" I actually joined Miss Universe in 1998 when I was hired by Hawaii to represent their interests. I was there, went out by myself, had the best time because I became my own best friend at that point and really just enjoyed every single day. It was great.
So you take things one at a time and not worry about your future or not allow yourself to be stressed out by something that does not exist?
PS: I try! Having your company purchased by a network sometimes gets me stressed out! Right now, it's insane with our NBC purchase. There are three of us here in the office that are primarily involved with that, and we've been going and going and working late nights. We have to keep each other's spirits up since we've been working so hard.
So you have an excellent teamwork? Everybody gets along well with each other?
PS: Yes. We're not without our problems, but we all try to get along. Sometimes we're like a family… sometimes dysfunctional. But most of the time we work together well.
Now this is one of the questions that was posed actually during this year's pageant. What makes you blush?
PS: (Laughs) Just about everything! I'm a little too Irish looking.
The first time I heard that question, I said to myself, "This is really stupid!" I mean - trying to be politically correct - how do you ask that question to a dark-skinned girl?
PS: That question was picked just about when we went on the air. There were so many things about 9/11, about Osama bin Laden, and questions that have been more appropriate. "What makes you blush?" My first reaction was: Wait a minute! But I guess it is something that you have to think about. I actually thought that they got a good reaction out of everybody. But it was not my favorite…
I'm sure it boosted the ratings, too.
PS: (Laughs) I actually thought about how I'd answer that question when it was first posed. And I you know, sometimes it's that embarrassing situation when you stick your foot in your mouth. I am the worst. I cannot, uh… I have the hard time recovering 'cause I start to blush and obviously I've stuck my foot in my mouth and I try to make up for it and it just gets worse usually.
Okay, another topic - leadership. Now you're the leader of the world's largest and most prestigious pageant organization. What do you think are the attributes of a good leader?
PS: First and foremost, the ability to take in the big picture. This was actually a big transition for me because I was so involved with production. I had to step back and say, "Wait a minute!" There are twenty six people in this organization and they all have different roles. A good leader should also be a good listener - having people feel that they have the ability to come talk to you about anything - what's bothering them, or what would make their lives easier, or how they can improve. Usually, when you feel that you have brought in experts around you, you should be able to listen to what they have to say and not feel threatened.
Since becoming the president of MUO, what two or three accomplishments have given you the most satisfaction?
PS: I would say first and foremost returning to Puerto Rico because that's something that we hadn't done before. I was really, really proud of that show and getting the network support since last year. As you know, we've been trying to define our shows and trying to define who we are this year. CBS came on board for the last show and said, "Okay, you don't have to have four musical performances. You can have just two and go back to focusing on the girls." And I think having it swing back to being about the delegates is probably the most important.
I tend to agree! I kept watching the show over and over again and uhmmm…. This is great! The girls! And the gowns, the swimsuit competition, the selection of music and the performance. It was incredible!
PS: It was a good show! I felt Marc Anthony was wonderful and those two moments with him were great, but I don't think he needed more performances. We were back to it, and it was nice. Plus it was nice that they also agreed to give us Wednesday night, so it really worked well for us in the ratings, too. I was really happy. I thought we had a good relationship with the network this year.
There was an ad in Vanity Fair, "Beauty beats the Beast", that boasted about the good ratings.
PS: Oh, yeah! Somebody else put that in there! (Laughter) And that's been seen in a lot of different places. The Vanity Fair ad I saw much later, but it hit the New York papers first. Donald was very happy!
Topic - pageants. Why are pageants still relevant in today's society?
PS: I think it's kinda twofold. First of all, people love beautiful women and I don't think there's anything wrong with that!
I know what you mean. Now, is there anything you'd like to say to Miss Universe pageant fans?
PS: I hope people are happy with the direction that we're coming back to. It's going to be very interesting with NBC right now - they're going to be very supportive.
So we're looking for bigger numbers next year?
PS: I'm always looking for bigger numbers. (Laughs)
I'll tell all my friends to watch next year!
PS: I'm really excited about the Panama show.
Are they pretty much ready?
PS: They're very organized. Very, very organized. And the fact that it's their Centennial, I think it's going to be nice. I happened to be reading a book a year ago about Panama and this opportunity came up. And the fact that we're going to Panama doesn't have anything to do with Miss Panama as first runner-up. The results were based on fair voting - and I just want to make sure that everyone's clear on that. Tony Santomauro (VP of Business Planning) and I were sitting next to each other during the show, and when Justine (Miss Panama) made it to the Top 2, we just looked at each other, like "No one's going to believe this!"
Who were your favorites by the way?
PS: I never say! I had a lot of favorites, actually. I never boil it down to just one, because if I do even make a guess, I'm always wrong so I don't want to jinx anybody. Again, it's one of those things that happens for a good reason. So I don't try. I leave it up to the experts.
Okay, let's play a game called word association…
PS: I thought we already did the words!
Nope! This one is very simple. Describe each person, thing, or event just using one adjective - whatever comes to your mind. Oxana Fedorova…
PMS: Beautiful.
Donald Trump…
PS: Powerful.
September 11, 2001…
PS: Reflective.
New York City…
(Puzzled) How do you use one word for New York?
Final note:
That's the reason why I like Miss Universe, they're so transparent.

However, many candidates believed that the recipient of this award almost always did not win the Miss Colombia title. Consequently, many candidates did not intentionally embellish their hairdo just to avoid winning the prize.
- Dynasty queens: Merceditas Baquero was a runner-up in 1958. Her daughter, Margarita Rosa De Francisco Baquero, was selected first-runner-up in 1994. Two sisters won respectively in 1977 (Shirley Sáenz) and in 1982 (Julie Pauline Sáenz). A third sister, Kathy Sáenz, placed second in 1991.
- Every year since 1971, the mothers of the candidates participate in their own pageant called "The Queen Mother" (Reina Madre) and judged by their very own daughters. Last year, the daughters changed the rules by unanimously declaring all the mothers as winners.

Miss World 2002 Postponed To Respect Ramadan
By GILBERT DA COSTA
Associated Press Writer
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP)--Nigeria on Thursday postponed the Miss World pageant until after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, bowing to Muslim objections and threats to disrupt the contest.
Nigeria's first lady, Stella Obasanjo, said Thursday that the pageant will take place Dec. 7 in the capital Abuja, a day after the Muslim fasting month ends, out of ``genuine consideration for our Muslim brothers and sisters.''
The pageant was originally scheduled to take place Nov. 30.
Miss World is being billed as the largest entertainment event ever held in Africa's most populous country. The government hoped to use it to showcase the nation of 120 million people as a tourist destination.
However, the pageant has come under fire from both Muslim groups and beauty queens. Contestants are joining a growing pageant boycott to protest a death by stoning sentence against Amina Lawal, 31.
An Islamic court in northern Nigeria condemned Lawal for having sex outside of marriage.
Contestants from Spain, France, Kenya, Denmark, Belgium and Switzerland have said they will not participate.
The National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs last week accused pageant organizers of gross insensitivity and called for the government to cancel the pageant, which they called a ``show of shame contest.''
The Jama'atul Muslimeen Sokoto Society, a Muslim group, has derided the pageant as ``nothing but a parade of nudity'' and previously said holding the event in Nigeria could not be justified.
The National Council of Muslim Youths has protested the pageant, vowing to disrupt it.
None of the groups was available for comment Thursday night.
The threats prompted the Nigerian government last month to issue a statement assuring contestants they would be safe in Nigeria.
The culture and tourism minister had earlier warned participants not to travel into the mainly Muslim north of the country where Islamic law, or Shariah, is practiced.
