good morning peeps!!!!!

what a shocker!!!!!!

i still can't believe it.

i almost fell off my chair upon reading this.

sayang talaga si oxana. for me, she was one of the most beautiful miss universe. iba kasi yung dating niya. she seems to be enjoying attending to her responsibilities as miss universe. i really still don't understand why. can anyone confirm the news that she is indeed pregnant??

i feel sad that oxana was dethroned. but i guess justine can equally take the role as the new miss universe. and life must go on for justine and oxana and the miss universe org.

Taken from one of the message boards:

The truth is she was in St. Petersburg last week defending her PhD. thesis, as confirmed by her boss at the University. It wasn't because she didn't want to fulfill her MU obligations. She just couldn't.

What I uncerstand is that the University of Ministry of Interior was not flexible enough to let Oxana put her career on hold for a year. They even wanted her to come back and teach this fall. It seems things are very different over there!

I guess Oxana and MU org never understood each other. It's too bad Oxana could not understand that she can't work on her PhD and be a Miss Universe at the same time.

She might have thought about quitting already even before they fired her. When she was in PR a couple of weeks back, she told the press that she wouldn't throw away her career in the government.

It's too sad it has to end this way. But, at least she can save her long term career.

I don't think Oxana was a spoiled ***** like NYpost said.
If she was, she wouldn't have to teach at the University to earn a living while working on a PhD, right?

I believe that the reason why they did not remove the official title from Amparo Munoz is because she reigned for a substantial period. More than half a year if I'm not mistaken. I am not sure how they came up with such verdict for Oxana but if we base it on longevity alone, she has not been Miss Universe for a long time. Hence, the need to install Justine as the new Miss Universe.

http://i.cnn.net/cnn/2002/US/Northeast/09/23/miss.universe/story.miss.universe.jpg
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The crowning of the most beautiful woman in the universe has turned ugly.

The former Miss Russia, Oxana Fedorova, said Monday that she quit her role as Miss Universe after just four months on the job because "the duties really interfered with my education."

The Miss Universe Organization, however, said the 24-year-old Russian beauty was fired -- the first time in the 52-year history of the pageant that has happened. The organization did not give an explanation as to why Fedorova was ousted, but said a news conference will be held Tuesday in New York.

A new Miss Universe -- Justine Pasek, 22, of Panama, who finished as the first runner-up in the May competition -- was named Monday morning, although her formal crowning will come at the Tuesday press conference, said Esther Swan, a spokeswoman for The Miss Universe Organization.

Swan refused to go into details about why Fedorova is no longer on top of the universe.

"I can only comment that we do a have a new Miss Universe," Swan said.

In an interview with Russian TV Channel 2, Fedorova expressed surprise when told that the organizers described her dethroning as an ouster. She said the decision to hand over the crown was all hers.

"The duties of Miss Universe are wonderful and noble, of course, but the most important thing in my life is my education and my career here in Russia," she said. "I found that the duties really interfered with my education. That's the only reason that I decided to give up the crown."

Fedorova, who is a police lieutenant, is almost finished writing her dissertation at the Academy of Internal Affairs on detective techniques. She is to defend her dissertation in October.
And though she no longer holds the official Miss Universe title, Fedorova says the honor of being chosen is still hers.

"I consider myself to still be Miss Universe. I'm proud that a Russian woman carries the title. But when I entered the contest, I had no idea and no one ever explained to me the consequences of winning the contest, the many commitments," she said.

Fedorova might still consider herself Miss Universe, but the pageant definitely does not. She has been removed from the official Miss Universe Web site, which now lists Pasek as the official 2002 Miss Universe.

The site describes Pasek as a woman with "supermodel looks and humble personality" who is "indicative of the beauty in the new millennium." In taking on her new responsibilities, the site says Pasek is "ready to work hard as an ambassador for women around the world."

The news of the tiff between Fedorova and pageant organizers was first reported in Monday's New York Post. The Post reported Fedorova refused to perform a number of her duties as Miss Universe, might be married to her longtime boyfriend -- a violation of pageant rules -- and could be pregnant.

Fedorova said she wishes that were true.

"As far as the rumors go about me being married and pregnant, those are wonderful rumors. I want a family, I love family life, and it's what's most important in life. But at the moment, that's only my dream, and not at all true," she said.

"I've never been married. I haven't had any kids. Hopefully sometime in the future those dreams will happen for me."

Guys, I read sa CBS News na part of Oxana's responsibilities is to travel extensively on behalf of the entire MUO, which she is representing.

One of the many reasons why she was "fired" was her failure to comply with this rule. Among those important events where her presence was required was the recently-concluded Miss Teen USA 2002 pageant last August 28...

Oksana Loses Her Miss Universe Crown

By Yevgenia Borisova
Staff Writer St. Petersburg -- Just four months after Oksana Fyodorova was crowned Miss Universe, she has been stripped of her title for refusing to fulfill her duties and for gaining weight, pageant organizers said Monday.

Fyodorova, the first Russian to win the Miss Universe pageant in its 51-year history, said she had stepped down for personal reasons.

Pageant spokeswoman Esther Swan said the dark-haired, green-eyed St. Petersburger was sacked last week after being warned about her lackluster performance.

"She was told that she must fulfill all the obligations, and she said that she would make sure that it didn't happen again," Swan said by telephone from New York. "However, nothing changed for the better."

Swan said pageant organizers sent Fyodorova, 24, a letter last week informing her of their decision. The letter said her refusal to perform her duties as a Miss Universe titleholder "has and will cost the Miss Universe organization hundreds of thousands of dollars while gravely affecting our reputation," according to the New York Post, which reported the sacking Monday.

The newspaper said Fyodorova, among other things, had refused to participate in a recent live, two-hour broadcast of the 2002 Miss Teen U.S.A. competition.

The crown was handed over to the first runner-up of the May 29 contest, Justine Pasek of Panama.

"It's too bad it didn't work out better with Oksana, but our new Miss Universe is equally beautiful and she is a tremendous crowd-pleaser," pageant owner Donald Trump was quoted by the New York Post as saying.

Swan said Fyodorova had blamed personal problems for her behavior. She refused to elaborate.

The New York Post quoted an unnamed source in the pageant as saying Fyodorova was "an unbelievable beauty and an unbelievably spoiled *****" who "does not want to do anything."

The source also said pageant organizers believed Fyodorova may be secretly married to her "well-connected boyfriend." The source said the boyfriend had showered Fyodorova with gifts since she was 16.

Fyodorova said at the pageant that she had a 38-year-old boyfriend named Vladimir.

Another insider told the New York Post that Fyodorova had gained about seven kilograms since the pageant and may be pregnant.

Swan acknowledged that Fyodorova had gained weight and said none of her specially tailored clothes fit anymore.

"I saw her last weekend, but these girls have such amazing bodies that you can't say immediately if they have gotten bigger," she said. "But when she can't put on anything from her full wardrobe ..."

Fyodorova, a ranking police lieutenant and a postgraduate student in civil law, denied being married or pregnant.

"The duties of Miss Universe are a very good thing, but I would not have been able to continue my studies," she said in televised remarks. "As for marriage and pregnancy, they are excellent but still a dream [for me]."

In Fyodorova's hometown, acquaintances greeted the news of her sacking with disbelief.

"I am a military person, and I won't believe this newspaper until I see the official document," said Vyacheslav Bulavinov, the deputy head of the postgraduate faculty at the Interior Ministry University where Fyodorova is a third-year student.

He said she has never stopped her studies and has remained in regular contact with the university's rector, Viktor Salnikov, and her mentor. He said she had nearly completed her dissertation on the regulation of private detective and security activities. She is expected to defend the dissertation next month and, after that, could be dispatched by the Interior Ministry as a senior police lieutenant.

Salnikov blamed pageant organizers for being too hard on Fyodorova, Interfax reported. He quoted Fyodorova as telling him on the telephone that the organizers did not want to let her go to the university to defend her dissertation in October.

"All the speculation that has appeared in the Western press that Fyodorova got married, pregnant and seven kilograms heavier have no grounds," he was quoted by Interfax as saying. "She did not get married, did not get fatter and is not pregnant."

Fyodorova said she would always be Miss Universe at heart.

"I will remain Miss Universe for our citizens and, above all, for myself," she said.

I read it in Global Beauties (hope they're correct) that Amparo was dethroned just a month before MU75, her first runner up could not take her place because she won Miss World and she too was dethroned.

Hello peeps!!! Daming nag post ha.

Anyway, could anyone post pictures of our new Miss Universe, I want to collect these pics kasi like what I did with Oxana. Hindi pa actually nag sink in sa akin ng lubusan na Panama has a Miss Universe. Di ko pa masyadong type si Justine kapag kulot ang buhok (like in the Coronation Night) pero I simply adore her kapag straight (like in the modelling stint they attended and in her official headshot, though medyo kulot). Or kung hindi ma post yung pics, yung page na lang before when pix were posted heavily here.

I would not at all be surprised kung we learn in the future that Trump just used this to bring the limelight back to Miss Universe org. Lately kasi, Miss World and the boycotts have been the issue.

From Pageant News Bureau:

Oxana Fedorova, the first Russian ever to become Miss Universe, has been dethroned by Miss Universe Inc. The change is reportedly because she failed to live up to contractual obligations, but the organization is providing few details. Its Web site simply shows Justine Pasek, Ms. Fedorova's first runner-up, as the reigning Miss Universe. The unexpected announcement has the pageant world buzzing with speculation. One theory is that the Miss Universe organization sought to garner the level of publicity the Miss America Pageant recently received when two young women were fighting over the title of Miss North Carolina. Another theory is that the organization is somehow trying to curry favor with Panama, which is Ms. Pasek's home country and the site of the next Miss Universe Pageant. Neither seems credible, but further details are expected.

Super curious lang talaga me dyan. Please enlighten me.

The reason why Marjorie Wallace is still considered as Miss World 1973 is because Eric and Julia Morley couldn't find anybody for a replacement! The 2nd R-up, Monica Chan of Jamaica didn't really take over. And so Julia Morley was the one who crowned Helen Morgan, Miss World 1974.

1975 was a weird year... :wow:

Both Miss Universe and Miss World winners weren't crowned by their original predecessors...

Anne Marie Pohtamo was crowned Miss Universe 1975 by former Miss Universe 1972 Kerry Anne Wells.

Wilnelia Merced was crowned Miss World 1975 by 1st runner-up Annielene Kriel (who eventually became MW74 after Helen Morgan was dethroned).

In my opinion, I don't think Trump has something to do with it. Because Oxana is a very BIG asset to Miss Universe. If he got his own way, he would not let go of Oxana. To think 4 months pa lang siya and she is considered to be one of the most popular Miss Universe. What more if she wasn't dethroned? I think we were influenced too much by the smear campaign against him, that we don't see the good side. I just dunno why he has become infamous with a lot of people. Well there is always two sides of a coin, you have to agree with me na gumanda ang Miss Universe when he took over. Miss Universe became more transparent and they became well adjusted with the times. Mga ala super models ang dating na nila.

Up to now, I'm still disappointed with what happened to Miss Universe. I think Oxana wasn't really ready to take on the Universe.

I think Miss Universe should bring back the final questions that would require politically correct ladies to answer the question with ease. I think the final question should be the one to bring out the substance in these women. In the past 2 years kasi, medyo pang slum book type lang yung final question, which could make the pageant look less tense but at the same time make it look less serious. At least with the serious final question, the ladies are made aware that if they win, they would be into a world of responsibilities. I especially like the final questions in 1999 and 2000. They should take the pageant more seriously now. Kung pwede nga lang, ibalik din ang Top 10 interview, that way, makikita ang delegates up close. Sa sobrang naging super model ang dating ng Miss Universe productions ngayon, naging ang dating is that Miss Universe will do nothing but model. But that is not the reality. Miss Universe is a serious title with serious responsibilities. I read in an article that Oxana said nobody told her that Miss Universe has a big responsibility. Did she think it would be easy? But we all know that she is a woman of principle because she knows what she wants in life.

Oh well! Good luck to Oxana and her studies and may Justine be a good Miss Universe.

When I was watching the pageant, I was shocked that Justine was First RU, because for me, she didn't have the zest to be 1st RU. And now, I am equally shocked to see her take the crown.!!!

Apostle: Napansin mo din ha! Both ladies have European roots. Justine was born of a Polish father and a Panamanian mother. Lara, on the other hand, has European roots which I just can exactly determine. :)

fidele: Thanks for the Justine coronation pics.

Musique: Justine landed in 2nd place overall last May 29 because of her famous answer during the Personality Q&A revealing that given the chance to represent another nation, she'd choose Puerto Rico.

Here is her answer during the Final Q&A...

"I really can't help blushing when people give me their sincere cariño... their sincere love. I feel really blessed and that's what it really is."

JUSTINE PASEK
MISS UNIVERSE® 2002

Justine Pasek, a crowd favorite during the 2002 MISS UNIVERSE competition, is a 22-year-old native of Panama City, Panama. She has been recognized all over the world for her supermodel looks and humble personality. Her natural beauty is indicative of the beauty in the new millennium. As Justine moves to New York City to take on the title of Miss Universe, she is ready to work hard as an ambassador for women around the world by representing the Miss Universe Organization.

Before putting on the crown, Justine worked in production for television specials, charity events, theater musicals and fashion shows. She plans to someday complete a degree in Environmental Engineering, and then work for the Smithsonian Research Center, educating the public about environmental conservation. During her reign as Miss Panama, she has worked with Casa Esperanza, which is an organization that helps street kids get off the street and into schools. She has also set up fashion shows for charitable organizations such as the Red Cross, FANLIC (Fundsacion Amigos Ninos Con Leucemia Y Cancer), Fundacion Son Felipe, among others.

Justine is the daughter of a software engineer for the Panama Canal Authority and a homemaker. She is the oldest of three; her two brothers are 12 and 14. Her Grandfather was a marine in World War II and a pilot for the Panama Canal Commission. She has a very close relationship with her parents and has been a mentor to her younger siblings. She has had her family’s support as a competitor in swimming, basketball and volleyball and has enjoyed drawing, ballet, tap, salsa and gourmet cooking lessons throughout her childhood.

As Miss Universe 2002, Pasek will travel extensively working with internationally recognized AIDS/HIV organizations, including the Global Health Council, the Harvard AIDS Institute, AmFAR, and the Center for Disease Control’s “Act Now” campaign. As a “celebrity” spokesperson, she will be responsible for working with the media globally to generate a better understanding and acceptance of AIDS and HIV and its prevention; while helping increase awareness, funding and resources for these key organizations.

GRABE NA TO!!!

“I can only comment that we do have a new Miss Universe,” ani Swan kasunod ay binanggit ang pangalan ni Miss Panama Justine Pasek, 22-anyos na siyang nanalong First Runner-Up sa nakaraang koronasyon noong Mayo.

“I found that the duties really interfered with my education. That’s the only reason that I decided to give up the crown,” ani Ms. Russia.

Kahit umano wala na sa kanya ang opisyal na titulo bilang “Miss Universe,” sinabi ni Ms. Russia na nasa kanya pa rin ang karangalan. “I consider myself to still be Miss Universe. I’m proud that a Russian woman carries the title. But when I entered the contest, I had no idea and no one ever explained to me the consequences of winning the contest, many commitments.”

To Our National Directors:

As most of you know, the title of MISS UNIVERSE comes with great responsibility. It is built on a tradition in which the MISS UNIVERSE Titleholder is not merely a beauty queen; she travels extensively as a spokesperson, a goodwill ambassador and a role model to millions. She has many obligations, to our charitable alliances, our sponsors, our fans, and to you our National Directors.

Unfortunately, Oxana Fedorova was unable to fulfill her duties as MISS UNIVERSE 2002 and therefore, first runner-up, Justine Pasek of Panama will assume the title, effective tomorrow.

This is the first time in the fifty-two year history of the Organization that a Miss Universe has not completed her reign and replacing Oxana was in the best interest of all involved. We wish Oxana only the best in her future endeavors and know her return to Russia is a welcome one.

In turn, we welcome Justine to New York and to the MISS UNIVERSE Organization. We are confident she will be a wonderful representative for all of us who are a part of the MISS UNIVERSE system and look forward to the months ahead.

Sincerely,
Paula Shugart

Sana si Denise nalang ang nag crown, ang sagwa. I have accepted reality about Justine (there's nothing we can do anyway), though never in my lifetime did I expect that I would see a Miss Universe getting dethroned. Yes, Jensie is right, natalbugan nanaman ng Miss Universe ang Miss World. The boycott did not reach this kind of proportion. It's everywhere.

New Miss Universe crowned; predecessor dethroned
Tue Sep 24, 7:34 PM ET
By KATHERINE ROTH, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - Moments after being crowned Tuesday as the new Miss Universe ( news - web sites), 23-year-old Justine Pasek of Panama said she was still stunned by news that the pageant winner had been dethroned.

Still, she was happy to take over.

"I'm sure this next nine months will be the most important of my life," she said, carefully balancing a diamond and pearl tiara on her head during a brief ceremony. "I could not be more excited and ready to start."

The former first runner-up was crowned a day after Russian law student Oxana Fedorova, who won the May pageant in Puerto Rico, was dethroned because pageant officials said she was not fulfilling her duties. It was first time a titleholder had been fired in the contest's 52-year history.

Paula Shugart, the organization's president, had asked Fedorova to resign, said real estate magnate Donald Trump, co-owner of Miss Universe Organization. "When Oxana didn't resign, Paula had no choice but to terminate her," Trump said.

Shugart and Trump said Fedorova didn't show up for some photo shoots and charity events.

"She needed to spend a lot of time in Russia," Shugart said on NBC television. "I believe her mother was ill at one point."

Fedorova, a police lieutenant pursuing a graduate law degree at St. Petersburg's Police Academy, denied she was fired and said she gave up the title voluntarily.

"The duties of a world beauty are wonderful. However, my prime goal is my studies and career in Russia," Fedorova told RTR state television Monday. "I know I will remain Miss Universe for Russian citizens and for myself."

Pasek, who works in television production and hopes to complete a degree in environmental engineering, will spend the coming months as a goodwill ambassador in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

She said she wished Fedorova "the best and I'm very happy to be taking over this job now."

Pageant officials said Fedorova had returned the $20,000 diamond and pearl tiara she won when she was named Miss Universe. A more expensive tiara — with 800 diamonds instead of 15 — which winners wear only when they are crowned, is kept by the Miss Universe Organization.

note: maganda naman siya ah

from GB:

Justine Pasek from Panama was officially crowned today as Miss Universe 2002. Wrapped in the colors of fall, in hues of brown, sugar and spice, dressed in a simple power suit and in impeccable shape, Justine Pasek -the new Miss Universe 2002-, accepted her crown at the Trump Plaza Towers in Fifth Avenue, New York.

Surrounded by a hefty press from around the world, Pasek answered questions with the same serene voice that characterized her answers during the Miss Universe Pageant celebrated in Puerto Rico four months ago where she was selected first runner up. Originally from Panama City, Panama, Justine is the first Miss Universe from this country. She inherited the crown after Russia's Oxana Fedorova lost her crown by not complying with her title responsibilities and forced the Miss Universe Organization to cancel her contract. Left: The Panamanian beauty is crowned by Donald Trump himself.

When Justine was asked about her impressions on Oxana, she expressed diplomatically: "We had good chemistry during the few occasions we talked in Puerto Rico -where they were both elected-, and in Panama when she came to visit for a fashion show. She seemed like a very sweet girl. But there was a language barrier, (Oxana was not fluent in English). So, I really don't have much to base an opinion", Justine added.

"You can dream about becoming Miss Universe, but the reality is so much better. It's been shortly after 24 hours since I found out I was the new Miss Universe. I came to New York thinking I was going to comply with a travel assignment by the Organization as First Runner Up, when Paula Shugart (President Of Miss Universe) picked me up at the airport. As we were approaching New York City, she gave me the news. Ever since its been turmoil".

Certainly it looks hectic for the Panamanian beauty when asked if she had the opportunity to talk to Mireya Moscoso, Panama's first female president. "I've been told she tried to contact me, but in all honesty I have been so busy ever since I was announced as the new Miss Universe, that I have not had the time. As soon as I can I will contact her and of course my friends and family." she answered.

When a Russian journalist asked Justine if the pageant was losing its relevance, Donald Trump -the mogul business multimillionaire owner of the Miss Universe franchise- interrupted and mentioned the buster ratings Miss Universe had in the TV sweepstakes last May. But it was Justine who gave the human touch. "Miss Universe, the pageant itself, is held only one night," Justine said. "The work Miss Universe does in AIDS and for charity organizations around the world, that's what Miss Universe is all about. Taking this in consideration, I simply can't believe why this pageant would lose its relevance."

Once said these words, there was a strenuous applause and both Shugart and Trump gave a smile of satisfaction. Right: Justine wears the $250,000.00 Mikimoto pearl crown that was designed this year for thenew Miss Universe!

Another emotional moment came when a Panamanian journalist gave a heart felt speech at the end of the conference congratulating Justine for her crowning, which brought emotion to Justine's serene tone. "I can't wait to be back in Panama and see the reaction of my people. I'm proud to be the first Panamanian to be Miss Universe." She said visually touched.

Shortly after the press conference ended, Justine complied with individual interviews for which she attended everyone with her calm, professional demeanor. Left: Trump, Shugart and Pasek answer the media's questions.

She had her natural fuzzy hair nicely straightened, added with a few rays and her make up was impeccable. Unlike the last Miss Universe titleholders, Justine hasn't gained an extra pound since she competed. She is assuming her role as if it were made to measure and she is already, in only one day, quite an international celebrity. Mary Hilliard, Director Of Public Relations of the Miss Universe Organization had scheduled an interview with Connie Chung tonight for CNN and there on and there forth. And with this, raveled in a mirage of press and pageant fans, not knowing exactly which is which, a new Miss Universe is selected and pageant history was made.

I think nobody wanted this to happen, even Justine. I guess from the start, Oxana should've planned ahead if by winning Miss Universe would interfere with her studies. If she really wanted to focus on her studies then she shouldn't have joined Miss Universe in the first place.

good pm peeps!!

wow!! the news about oxana's dethronement really rocked the whole world.

for me, the mikimoto tiara looks best on oxana. she carrries it well and i still can't seem to get the hang of justine wearing it. :(

regarding kate manalo, i think she lost some weight but siguro a few more pounds and some toning for her to be more prepared for miss world and i commend her effort in trying to be in shape.:)

just saw an interview of oksana from CNN. Kinuha ata yun ng CNN sa isang Russian TV station. Hindi naman siya tumaba ah! Talaga yung ibang tao oh. Exaggerated!
Ganun parin yung itsura. Naka black na sweater tapos sa ibabaw ng sweater niya parang red na vest. She looks nice naman, but quite sad. Mukhang malungkot yung mga mata niya e. :)

Yun..sabi niya na she never knew na ganun pala ka-hectic yung schedule pag naging miss universe. Sa ngayon daw kasi, priority niya yung studies niya, and she also said that she voluntarily gave up her crown.

According to Oksana, she is still Miss Universe 2002. Ganun din si Justine.

That's how tabloids make money. Now, though hard it may seem, Oxana cannot claim she's Miss Universe 2002 anymore. She voluntarily gave up the crown, it's like saying you quit your job na. A former Miss Universe maybe, but she would have to share 2002 with Justine- now this would be confusing. I for once accepted it na, there's no use of sourgraping and whining, "sayang this and sayang that." Malungkot nga pero, move on nalang.

The plot thickens
Ousted Miss Universe Says She Was Misled
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's dethroned Miss Universe, committed to a career in the police, was quoted as saying Wednesday she had performed her duties diligently but had been misled over the scale of the title holder's job.
Oxana Fedorova, replaced by Miss Panama in a New York ceremony, told the tabloid daily Komsomolskaya Pravda that she had been astonished at U.S. press reports that she had been lazy, capricious and unworthy of the title.
"There is not a grain of truth in this ... I gave up the title voluntarily. Such are my personal circumstances," Fedorova told the daily in a front-page article entitled "Patriot or Flighty Woman?"
"Before I won, no one told me anything about the conditions of the contract. I never thought there would be so many commitments. And I never had any intention of abandoning my university work. So I told the organizers that I had to go home and of course they couldn't wait months for me to come back."
Fedorova, 24, is to defend a thesis on private security companies at St. Petersburg's Interior Ministry Police University later this year. The daily quoted an Interior Ministry official as saying she had recently been named a police captain.
Fedorova's removal was the first in the history of the pageant. Organizers said she had failed to carry out her responsibilities, while press reports suggested she had gained weight, married or become pregnant.
She said future competitors would have to decide whether they wanted to work as models.
"I did when I was 17. Now I work in the Interior Ministry and I'm proud of it," she told the daily.
A school friend told Komsomolskaya Pravda the ousted beauty queen had a dark-haired boyfriend who was a "big businessman." Fyodorov was coy about suggestions he was wealthy. "Is that so?" she said. "I can't say, I really can't say."

I agree with most of you that it will take a long time for us to get used to Justine being Miss Universe...I have been a follower of the pageant for some years now, and very few winners impressed me. Of course, it was very elating in 1999. But this year's Miss Universe is an entirely different experience... You know the feeling of watching such a momentous event... IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE... OXANA FEDEROVA HAS IT... all the qualities that makes a woman a Queen...

Actually, till i read the news last tuesday, I still can't get over the way she won... I know that a lot of us can come up with words to describe her and the way she bowled us over...IT WAS AWESOME...

It was just saddening that this has to happen:depressed:... Maybe I'm biased coz I wasn't a Justine fan in the fist place... When did Russia first joined btw? Imagine winning the prestigious crown just after a few years.. and Panama joining for the longest time perhaps and have Justine wear the crown coz of technicality...

But then, detroned or whatever, I will always remember OXANA as Miss Universe 2002. Lest we forget, she won the crown on the criteria set by the organizers, not "while waiting in the wings"..

Honestly, I think Justine is too masculine looking for the title. She just don't cut it...and I'm afraid she never will... :crazytongue:

Hey guys long time no post for me here. I was able to watch Justine's crowning. It was beamed from Fox TV a few days back. I'm sad with what had transpired, certainly the biggest scandal to hit the pageant scene. Remember that the last abdication/being dethrone took place 22 years ago. I'm referring to Gabriella Brum as Miss World 1980. It so sad. After the Oxana's crowning I was so satisfied with her, since the previous year I have reservations on Denise and came to terms with her victory only last May. It's really sad, this is certainly water never been tested by Miss Universe. It's really hard to come to terms with it. But the "Show must go on".

On the other hand, I'm starting to get pissed off with Stella. Who does she think she is. Why does she keep on recycling gowns, then national costumes. This is sick. I think she's allowing Pitoy to dictate her every move with regards to her queens. Just a thought.

Actually it's the other way around. Madame Stella gets what she wants and she does not heed to anyone, even Pitoy. Believe it or not, Pitoy has nothing to do with Bb. anymore, he just shows up for formalities nalang. He leaves all the decision power to Stella. How do I know this? Well my mom is a close friend of Pitoy, and so are a lot of Pinoy designers. Sine there are lots of shady characters lurking in Pex I cannot expose who my mom is. I'll just leave this as a clue, thanks to her, I was able to get Miss Universe Press Access.

Lara_D: You're correct! Madame Stella still has the final say...

Take the case of Nina Ricci two years ago. She was originally set to design her own evening gown. Peter Lim was originally commissioned to design her national costume. Pero due to an unexpected twist of fate... it was still Madame Araneta who got her wish... She commissioned her friend Alfredo Barraza to take care of everything... Nina Ricci's wardrobe was imported... everything-- from her undies, blouses and other casual clothes... the only thing "Filipino" she brought to Nicosia was herself... kaya ayun... :(

Oh well...

Guys, I'm just not so sure when... but I'm pretty sure our country will indeed host MISS UNIVERSE for the third time in the near future...

The Araneta Center in Cubao, QC is being touted as the next possible venue after The Folk Arts Theater and Philippine International Convention Center hosted the pageant in 1974 and 1994 respectively.

Here is a collage of the sketches for the planned "renovation" for the Araneta Center...
http://www.aranetacenter.net/araneta2000/img002.JPG

The Araneta Family, which built the stadium where Muhammad Ali beat Joe Frazier in 1975, is planning another "Thrilla in Manila" this time with a giant expansion of its retail-entertainment complex.

Covering 86 acres in the heart of Metro Manila, Araneta Center is already one of the largest retail entertainment mixed use centers in the Philippines, with its 700,000 square-foot Ali Mall, another 650,000 square-foot shopping center next to an open air Farmers Market, the 20,000 seat Araneta Coliseum and a 22- storey office building.

But phase 1 of the expansion alone will more than double the leasing area of Araneta Center, which lies on the southside of Quezon City, one of the 17 cities and municipalities that make up Metro Manila. Contractors are breaking ground on a giant new shopping center, office towers and a hotel.

Its combination of location-the complex will be served by two mass transit stations, a bus station and a convergence of of major roads- content will make the Araneta Center the Philippines' primary shopping destination, according to Robert Solomon, president of Robert Solomon and Associates, a veteran of the U.S shopping center industry who has involved in Araneta Center almost since its inception.

"We've got the north, the south, the east and the west converging on the center, siad Solomon, whose Tarzana, California-based retail and property development consulting firm is one of several international companies working on the project. Others include the Los Angeles office of RTKL, a U.S. retail design company; U.S. based retail design consultants Jones Lang LaSalle; and Hongkong based property services company Colliers Jardine.

Araneta Center, the brainchild of Jose Amado A. Araneta, was groundbreaking back in the 1960's, and not just for the Philippines. The Coliseum popularly known as "The Dome", was the biggest in the world and a dramatic centerpiece of the mixed-use complex. Ali Mall named after the famous boxer, was the first first enclosed shopping center in the Philippines when it opened in the 1970's and it was located catty-corner to a 265,000-square foot entertainmnet center called Fieste Carnival, making the Araneta Center the first retail entertainment center in the world, according to Solomon.

"He had the No.1 center in the industry," Solomon said. "I don't believe there was another shopping center in the world that had this level of retail entertainment tied into one center."

However in more recent years, with the complex overshadowed by the developments of other business districts, Araneta Center has lost its stature and in places is run-down and poorly lit.

"It's a little tired" Solomon admitted.

But Araneta Center Inc., now under the leadership of Jose's son Jorge, intends to regain the Cnter's former glory. And then some. In the next four years the company plans to complete a 3.5 million-square-foot mall, which will connect directly to the two mass transit railway terminals outside the center, and to build nearly 900,000 square feet of offices, a hotel and apartments.

The planned seven-level shopping center, called the Millennium Mall, is to be built around the recently renovated stadium with 500,000 square feet of shopping on each floor. Besides offering a range of American and European stores new to the Philippines, it will house 366,000 square feet of entertainment tenants including a full-size ice skating, a multiplex cinema and IMAX theater, a bowling alley and a children's and family entertainmentcenter as well as other attractions said Solomon.

But the expansion of Araneta Center will not end there. Under a $1.25 billion 20-year master plan, the company intends to turn it virtual city within a city, with the development of about 400,000 housing units, additional office and retail space and a giant communications structure, the Manila Tower, that will rival Paris' Eifel Tower in height, he said. Offices will be wired with the latest in communications technology.

The owner also are considering building an additional 200,000 square-foot mall, which they want to call Manhattan Mall, with housing on top.

Araneta Center Inc., which built owns, and manages the center is one of the several companies in the Araneta Group. Others include Progressive Development Corp., which incubates new businesses; Philippine Pizza which owns and operates 81 Pizza Hut restaurants across the country; and United Promotions, which runs leisure and entertainment facilities.

But Araneta Center is the jewel in the Family's crown, and its renovation and expansion reflects the modernization of the Philippines as a whole, as the country opens its markets to the world.

The center is ideally located to draw traffic, sitting next to the two of the busiest avenues, the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue and Aurora Boulevard, and is surrounded by medium-to-high density housing as well as several universities and colleges. There are 10 million residents in Metro Manila and up to 800,000 people visit the center on weekdays and a million a day on weekends.

The mass transit stations put it just a few minutes' ride from other major business districts including Makati, home of nearly all major Philippine corporations headquarters, some of which have been partly responsible for eclipsing Araneta Center in recent years.

ADDITIONAL INFO: The Araneta Coliseum's maximum seating capacity (Stage Proscenium seating scheme) is 25,000... That's 10 times bigger than that of PICC!
