Here is Miss World 1998, Linor Abargil, on the cover of the Israeli women's magazine LA'ISHA (3/30/98 issue), just one week after she was crowned Miss Israel 1998.

LA'ISHA, a glossy Israeli version of VOGUE or HARPER's BAZAAR, is the official sponsor for the Miss Israel pageant.

News reports described Linor as one of the "trendiest" contestants at Miss World 1998...and the contest itself was updated to be chock full of "Girl Power." Linor has got what it takes to be a Spice Girl. Move over Sporty Spice, make room for Shalom Spice!

Here is Miss World 1998, Israel's Linor Abargil, on the cover of the Arabic magazine AL MAJALLA (5/3-9/98 issue), sporting the "Peace" dress. Linor was the official model for the dress, but it was also worn by Israel's representatives to Miss Universe and Miss International.

Despite being a model for the "Peace" dress, Linor has made it clear that she will not necessarily be a spokesperson for the Middle East peace process.

The morning after winning the title, Brian Reade, a reporter for the British newspaper THE MIRROR, asked her, "Do you think as an Israeli you will be able to make a difference to the Middle East peace process?"

Linor's response to Mr. Reade was, "Well I don't want to talk about that because I am not going to be Prime Minister am I? No I will concentrate on charity work and travelling."

She told other reporters, "I don't want to talk about politics...I don't think I have to be involved in this peace and everything."

The last time our country was forced to withdraw from Miss World was in 1977, when Peachy Veneracion was ordered by the government to pull out due to the rising apartheid in South Africa. Her predecessor, Joy Conde, had also pulled out due to the same reason.

Los venezolanos perciben que el trabajo que desarrolla Joaquín Riviera es uno de los más envidiados del país. Cada año debe resolver el acertijo de la producción del espectáculo más esperado del año: la elección de Miss Venezuela, la muchacha que acto seguido se preparará para enfrentar a otras 80 y tantas chicas y conorarse como la mujer más bella del universo conocido.

La suerte está echada. Joaquín Riviera y su equipo de producción: coreógrafos, bailarines, productores y sus asistentes, técnicos (un despliegue de yonosécuántascámaras, bajo la dirección del “Pollo” Simonato) y las misses, ultiman los detalles del espectáculo que este año ha generado las mismas expectativas de siempre. ¿Quién será Miss Venezuela?

Sólo tres horas

Venevisión siempre ha mantenido la producción en secreto, sin embargo en esta Venezuela de hoy, nada hay oculto bajo el sol, así que nos coleamos en las fauces del lobo y aquí revelamos cómo será la noche más linda.

Ya la trouppe invadió el Poliedro de La Rinconada, desde donde el viernes 20, a las 7 en punto de la noche, sí -vía cadena nacional, si el gobierno no decide otra cosa- se revelará el show para todo el país.

Más de un año de trabajo que conduce a unas tres horas de transmisión, que por mucho que la desbordada imaginación del productor se empeñe en reducir, su “largura” final lo fija la cantidad de cuñas que venda mercadeo.

Este año, además de las misses, el certamen de Miss Venezuela contará con la presencia de varios artistas nacionales y la sensualidad de la mexicana Patricia Manterola, quien interpretará junto con el cuerpo de baile de Venevisión tres de sus éxitos mundiales.


Segmentos musicales

El espectáculo cuenta con tres cuadros musicales. El opening, en el que participarán las 26 candidatas con un traje de fantasía y un medley de los hits inolvidables del grupo ABBA, los muchachitos suecos que enloquecieron a la juventud mundial de los 70 y 80. En este segmento participarán las actrices Gaby Espino, Fabiola Colmenares, Chiquinquira Delgado y Marjorie de Souza, según arreglos musicales de Arnoldo Nali.

Luego el escenario se llenará de fiesta nacional con unas letras de Graterolacho y música o r i e n t a l -u n p o l o margariteño- y mucha tamborera arregladas por Isaías Urbina y Daniel Espinoza, para celebrar el jubileo de oro -50 años- del certamen, que tantas alegrías ha traído al pueblo venezolano.

“La mujer venezolana/ ha sembrado un gran país/ desde que Susana Duijm/ fue nuestra gran soberana”, dicen los versos que interpretarán Guillermo Dávila, Karina, A.5, Estación Central y Los Adolescentes.

Pero también los amantes de los ritmos tropicales serán seducidos por las misses. Para ellos habrá un segmento full caribe con los protagonista de novelas, en el que los encerrados por tres meses, léase Luisana, Bam Bam, Angel, Rodolfo, Metzli, Karina, Perroni, Gabriela, La Gocha, Jonathan, Juan Carlos Liendo y Riczabeth , interpretarán “Miénteme”, de Olga Tañón.

INNOVACIONES

Invitados y jurados
Maite Delgado será la conductora del Miss Venezuela junto con Gilberto Correa, quien logró la debida autorización de Televen para estar presente en esta magna fiesta de la belleza nacional.

A pesar del sigiloso trabajo de “seguridad” del Canal 4 (Venevisión) aquí seguimos revelando secretos del Miss Venezuela.

El jurado, a menos que Dios disponga otra cosa, este año será de tamaño compacto.

Apenas 15 personas lo conforman, todas ex Miss Venezuela. Y como invitados especiales serán presentados la presidenta del Miss Universo y otras personalidades de este famoso concurso internacional, quienes han manifestado sus inmensos deseos de vivir y ser partícipes del considerado en todo el mundo como el concurso de mejor organización, fastuosidad y mejores resultados.

No es de gratis que Venezuela ostenta el mayor número de coronas en certámenes internacionales.

Así que, como dice el comentarista Walter Martínez, disponga usted de las cámara para disfrutar de “una noche tan linda como esta”. Ya les daremos más detalles acerca del concurso...

Venevisión always ensures and maintains the productión in secret. It makes sure that the event would be as organized and memorable in every possible way.

Musical Segment

Miss Italia Nel Mondo celebrates the beauty of Italian women from all over the world.

Had the Miss Italia nel Mondo pageant been in existence back in 1962 we are pretty sure we know who would have won. Argentina's only Miss Miss Universe, Norma Nolan! Norma's father was Irish and her mother Italian, which would have qualified her for the Miss Italia nel Mondo title.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's, Italian immigrants flocked to North and South America, especially the USA and Argentina. In Argentina, Italian immigrants were called "golondrinas," or swallows, because many of them were farm workers who traveled back and forth across the Atlantic to take advantage of both the Italian and Argentine harvest seasons.

With Norma's Italian ancestry, we have dubbed her "Queen of the Golondrinas." But she isn't the only one. Miss World 1960, Argentina's Norma Cappagli and Miss Universe 1987, Chile's Cecilia Bolocco, are also of Italian ancestry!

Here is a rare photo from the 1972 Miss Universe Pageant, held in Puerto Rico. In the picture, we see the new Miss Universe 1972, Australia's Kerry Wells, on her throne. Surrounding her are venerable host Bob Barker and runners-up and semifinalists, including Miss India, Roopa Satyan (foreground).

The 1972 Miss Universe Pageant represented a crowning achievement in the pageant's history. It was the first time the pageant was telecast live, via satellite, from outside the continental USA.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of The Beauty Book by Doris G. Nuyda. The book chronicles the history of Philippine beauty from 1908 to 1980.

The Beauty Book includes color and black and white pictures, as well as profiles of past Filipino winners and runners-up in all Filipino and international pageants. Unfortunately, this book is out of print now and is thus considered one of the rare treasures showcasing Filipino beauty queens.

If the book were revised today, it would no doubt showcase the latest Filipino beauty to grace the universal stage, Miriam Quiambao, pictured here. Miriam was Miss Philippines Universe 1999 and first runner-up to Miss Universe 1999.

"Miss Windia" is how a London newspaper characterized Priyanka Chopra's victory as Miss World 2000. Indeed, since 1994, "Miss Windia" has won the Miss World crown four times and the Miss Universe crown two times.

She was a semi-finalist during MU90 held on April 15 in Los Angeles. She settled for 8th place overall.

I was in the Araneta when Jensie called me up, because I was watching the UAAP cheering competition. Medyo nagulat ako when i learned Aragua won, and to think my bet, Miss Dtto. Capital became 1st runner up (again!!!!), all my bets become 1st runner ups!!! So near to the crown pa naman. WEll I don't doubt Osmel, as expected we're going to be stonished by her drastic trasnformation. But i'm quite sad UP lost... sigh...

Actually a lot of them had thick make up. But Aragua doesn't look manufactured. But we still have to wait a long time before the make over, May is still so far.

Aminado naman kasi na di ganun ka striking ang routine ng UP this year, though unique and at least di kami nanggaya!!! hehehe Pataas ng pataas ang level of difficulty ng routine nila, eh medyo inexperienced ang mga lady PEPS namin. Kasi mga freshmen pa sila. This year is like an ode to the UP PEP kasi medyo ginaya nila ang mga routines ng PEP namin from the previous years. Ok tama na to. Don't want to dwell in it. The former Miss Russia, Oxana Federova, has been stripped of her Miss Universe title less than four months into her reign because she refused to fulfill the obligations of the title.

"She's an unbelievable beauty, and an unbelievably spoiled *****," said one insider. "She doesn't want to do anything."

The new Miss Universe, Justine Pasek of Panama, was the first-runner-up on May 29 in Puerto Rico when Federova was crowned.

Donald Trump, who owns the pageant, told The Post, "It's too bad it didn't work out better with Oxana, but our new Miss Universe is equally beautiful and she is a tremendous crowd-pleaser."

Federova is kept in the lap of luxury in Russia by a well-connected boyfriend who showers her with gifts. "He's taken care of her since she was 16," said a source.

Pageant officials were said to have been concerned that Federova might be secretly married to her boyfriend, which would be a violation of the Miss Universe rules.

"She's gained about 15 pounds and we think she might be pregnant," said one insider.

As Miss Universe, Federova was expected to travel extensively making personal appearances. But she allegedly refused a number of assignments, including the live, two-hour prime-time broadcast of the 2002 Miss Teen USA Competition on CBS.

A letter sent last week informed Federova she'd been canned. It read, in part, "Your continuing refusal to perform your duties as a Miss Universe titleholder has, and will, cost the Miss Universe Organization hundreds of thousands of dollars while gravely affecting our reputation."

Her successor, Pasek, said, "I will work to make this transition as easy as possible."

Miss Universe has been sacked after less than four months amid rumours she is pregnant.

Russian Oxana Federova has been stripped of her title because she refused to fulfil the obligations of the title.

Donald Trump, who owns the competition, told the New York Post it's "too bad it didn't work out better with Oxana".

But he says the new Miss Universe is equally beautiful and a tremendous crowd pleaser.

I mean this has gotta be a first time in recent/modern MU years! The last time that a Miss Universe fails to finish her reign was Amparo Muñoz of Spain back in 1974. :depressed2:

Personally, it was sayang of Oxana! She was the first Russian to win Miss Universe and also the first one to wear the Mikimoto Crown. Incidentally, she will also be the first one to lose it in just 4 months. I believe this is the shortest reign of a Miss Universe.

I wonder what has gotten into Oxana's mind?! I just couldn't understand. I couldn't fathom the thought that she lost it right there and then. I CAN'T ACCEPT IT YET! Maybe it will take a while before it sinks down my system. I'm really saddened by what had happened! :hopeless:

Well, as for Justine, I didn't really think she was capable of reaching that far. Last May, I was really, really surprised about her placement. And she still keeps on surprising me like the recent news about her taking the duties and responsibilities as Miss Universe. I don't have anything against Justine but my heart really belongs to Oxana! I dunno... maybe after a week or two, I'd be able to really accept the fact that its over for Oxana! I just wish Justine the best for the remaining 8-9 months!

*sigh*..i still have to get used of justine pasek being the new queen..have nothing against her though...what struck me from the article was that oxana does look like she gained weight...though being pregnant is only one of the possibilities...ay ewan!! maybe she just have her own reasons to decline the title na...its a lot of work rin to be miss universe...:(
