xysher: Hi there! Morning! Long time no see ah. :)

I'm also excited to know who'll represent Puerto Rico in Miss Universe 2003! :bounce: All I can say is Miss San Juan is indeed a strong contender. However, it's one tough horse race out there. Anything could happen!

Vania Millan broke the hearts of millions when she failed to make it to the Top 10 last May. Sayang talaga. Too late na yang make-over na yan... One thing for sure is Spain will be back next year with a revenge! Mark my word.

SPECIAL FEATURE :)

Guess who's coming to town just to crown Isis' successor...
http://www.endi.com/_fotos/ultimahora/020912oxana_mm.jpg

SAN JUAN (AP) – Four months after being crowned Miss Universe 2002, Russian beauty Oxana Fedorova visits the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico to crown Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2003.

Fedorova will crown Isis Casalduc's successor at the conclusion of the pageant. The winner will represent the island in Miss Universe 2003, to be hosted by Panama in May next year.

Upon her arrival, the Russian beauty talked with journalists at the Salón Puertos of the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan. She revealed that she done nothing but practice her English since she was crowned last May. She further added, "I want to travel to different countries to acquire and gain new experiences".

During her four months of reign as Miss Universe, the 24-year old Oxana has visited France, Italy, Kenya, Canadá, Indonesia and Greece.

Right now, Oxana is attending English classes in order to perfect her speaking skills more. One good thing is, she was able to answer reporters' questions in English.

After her reign as Miss Universe, Oxana plans of continuing and finishing her doctorate and go on with her masters.

Oxana arrived in San Juan direct from new York, where she has been based since she was crowned. She has yet to return to her homeland Russia for an official "working" visit.

During her brief visit to Puerto Rico, Oxana was invited as a guest of honor in the gala of the benefit: "Eleganza: a Fashion & Style Extravaganza" which includes collections of famous international designers Zang Toi and Juan Carlos Pinera. The event is in aid of the Institución Santa Teresa Jornet. Oxana will participate in the show by modelling some clothes.

I just made my usual rounds on the official Miss Puerto Rico and Tu Belleza MB's...

Everyone was shocked with the judges' decision. The entire island-- or perhaps even the world-- was counting on Miss San Juan Cynthia Olavarria to bag the coveted crown. Aside from snagging the Best Figure and Best Style awards, she also won the Miss Photogenic award.

The winner--Miss Vieques Carla Tricoli-- won the Talent Award during the preliminaries held last Saturday.

Miss Ponce's efforts of making it to the Final 6 was highly commended and anticipated by many. Who would have thought that the deaf beauty was just a meter away from bagging the most prestigious crown in the land?

Miss Barranquitas' making it to the Top 3 was no surprise. However, a lot of people still believed she deserved to win...

Oh well... That's life... There's always another year... Good luck to Puerto Rico!

Fil-Canadian Winner in 'Miss Teen All-American 2002'

http://www.abante.com.ph/issue/sep01/pictures/joyce.jpghttp://www.bodyshots.com.ph/images/jortega.jpg

More than 125 good-looking and intelligently beautiful teenagers from all over America including Canada got together early last month in Florida, U.S.A. for the annual Miss Teen All American 2002. The tall, bubbly, pretty 18-year-old who represented Toronto there is a Filipino.

She is Joyce Ortega, a high school graduate, who is a standout with her dusky good looks and her 5’11” height.

In fact, Joyce came home last year with her mom Nimpha to be the Filipino community’s representative in the annual Bodyshots competition of the Fashion Designers Academy of the Philippines (FDAP).

Down in Florida, she was among the winners. She received a plaque for the National Costume Award and is one of the top 10 in the competition.

Joyce was the only Fil-Canadian in the competition. Her winning costume was made by Greg Hilado of Gregorio Evening & Bridal Boutique in Toronto, Canada.

The Greg Hilado creation is an eye-catcher with silver metallic material, shaped into maple leaves (which are symbolic of Canada), attached to the bodice and headpiece which caught the attention of the contest judges.

Down there in Toronto, Joyce has been active in the ramp and fashion shows. As she now looks back: “Going home to Manila was a great experience. Perhaps I’ll go back there for vacation or some shows.”

Good Evening everyone!!!

Hehe, looks like pageant upsets in the Panama national pageant is again repeated in Puerto Rico. I for one, want San Juan to win. The only thing I do not like about her is the fact that she closely resembles Denise Quiñones and Brenda Liz Lopez. Ang mangyayari kasi is lagi na lang siyang i-compare sa dalawa and of course, the freakin' Puertoricans will surely hype this lady to the MAX. Imagine, kung siya ang nanalo, may Cynthia na naman sa Miss Universe next year!

Pero, I am not naman sad that Vieques won the crown. She is a strong contender, but not as popular as Cynthia. Sa kanilang dalawa, may beauty din naman siya, hindi nga lang ang typical Puertorican look. Pero I do not like the fact that she's not that tall.

She looks A LOT like Minorka Mercado in this picture!!! :surprised: Does this mean that the Miss Photogenic title is not gonna be a stranger to this woman? Remember, Minorka was able to grab it and I'm sure, even though Puertoricans do not agree with her winning the national title, they will still lend their support!!!

I don't think Puerto Rico would grab the photogenic award next year. Three years in a row? Garapal na yan. And unlike Minorka's time, countries today are beginning to be more competitive and are sending drop dead goddesses. The "thank you" countries before are no longer "thank you" countries now. Example, Aruba, Curacao, Bahamas, Japan, Trinidad & Tobago, to name a few. And she won't get my vote... hehehe

Well, I have selected pa lang some few good candidates for the competition and sila ang front runners ko. I believe na hindi na pala si Sandra Bisson ang candidate ng France, so as Cinthia Lander ng Venezuela.

Eto na in alphabetical order
Aruba, Britain, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Honduras, Iceland, India, Japan, Macedonia, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Spain, Tahiti, and Yugoslavia.

My Top 5 choices are:
Colombia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Philippines, and Tahiti.

If I am fortunate enough to wear the crown of Miss World, I would like to thank everyone who has helped me because this opportunity will definitely develop my personality and open doors for me in my chosen career field of broadcasting. Di ba maganda nga kung maraming dark horses sa Miss U. At least mas diversified and top 10 at hindi na lang the usual.

About Miss Photogenic naman, I personally believe na hanggang voted through the Internet ang Miss Photogenic, kayang-kaya nilang ipanalo ang delegate nila. Hindi na mapipigilan ang mga Puertoricans. Kahit sabihing di deserving ang delegate nila. Pero sana ibalik yung mga photographers na lang ang mag vote.

Regarding the selection of Miss Photogenic, the selection of the winner does not entirely rely on the internet voting public. It's not really thay fool proof. So they get the top 10 girls with the most number of votes and a group of photographers would select who they think is most photogenic.

The Miss Photogenic internet voting first started back in 1996. And they haven't looked back since. To think for the first two years of internet voting, it was the Philippines who bagged the title. We can't disregard the notion that the Pinoy had a way of making this a reality. You know naman how obsessed people here can get when it comes to pageants. It's a good thing that the Miss U decided to choose the Top 10 gils with the most number of votes, because if they left it to the hands of the internet voting public, maybe we would see the same countries getting the award year after year. How about the other deserving girls whose country's population doesn't have much internet access? Unfair diba?

The internet voting for the Photogenic Award in Miss Universe commenced in 1996, when the pageant's official website was launched. It contined until the next year.

In 1998, public voting was stopped. It was the members of the local and international press (covering the pageant) that selected the Top 10 delegates whom they believed were the most photogenic from the crop of beauties. From these 10, they deliberated on who eventually gets to bag the Photogenic Award itself. For 1998, it was the Slovak Republic's Vladimira Hrenovcikova who was voted most photogenic. This trend went on until 2000.

Finally in 2001, the public was again allowed to vote for their top choice for the Photogenic Award. The Top 10 were again compiled, then the press got to deliberate once again who the eventual winner was.

Right now we can only assume, because we cannot wholly rely on the pictures taken from Miss Sonrisa. Pictures lang yun, maybe it was just coincidence na they were just together when the photographer decided to take pictures. Yeah Osmel tends to have favorites every year, but it doesn't mean his favorite would always get the crown. Sure it worked for Cynthia and Adreina, but it wasn't exactly the same for Eva. Eva wasn't his favorite. In fact, in the past few years the presumed favorites of Osmel's have not won the crown...Christina Dieckmann, Veronica Schneider, Consuelo Adler to name three...and of course no one's jaw dropped more than Osmel's when Alicia took Miss Universe. Certainly Osmel influences the process but it's a stretch to say he rigs every pageant.

I don't think Venezuela would do a Panama/Puerto Rico, sure our bet might not win but I don't underestimate Osmel's capabilities. The girl who will be wearing the VENEZUELA sash in Panama would definitely be a huge favorite like every year. His girls never cease to amaze me.

Jensie,
Regarding the Miss Photogenic, in 1999 the public was allowed to vote. I remember I was torn between France and Mirriam, but I voted for Mirriam. I also remember that after the voting, the MU site posted the Top 10 girls with the most number of votes. And they said that the press photographers would pick the winner among the ten. The girls I remember that were on the list were, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, France, Australia was also there ata, yung iba I can't remember na.

Lara_D
Sep 15, 2002, 07:58 AM
I think Venezuela is the only pageant super power. They send girls that are close to perfection. Though sa 80's retro make up lang sila sablay, but the Miss U make up artists has a way of changing that. India hindi na eh, after seeing Neha in her thunder thighs (pata galore), sure they reach the top 10, but most of the time they just end up there. Unlike Osmel, he would not leave any stone unturned. Look at Femina, they forgot about Neha's figure. Maybe they focused too much on the mental, question and answer part, thinking too hard of difficult/politically correct/pageant patty questions, but at the end Miss U decided to ask the simplest of questions. Femina over did it.

Unlike Venezuela, thanks to Osmel's magic, they would always end up a notch higher than India. To think for so many years the lowest rank a Venezolana would reach is the Top 5/6.

While and USA, well, after 2 years, out of the top 10 uli. Sira na ang record nila. They are like some countries now, in some years pasok, in some years hindi- take Colombia and Puerto Rico for instance.

THE ROAD TO MISS UNIVERSE 2003

A "Day After" shot of Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2003 Carla Tricoli...
http://www.primerahora.com/1_fotos/020914/carla.jpg

The 20-year old lass from Vieques stands 5 feet 7 inches and weighs 112 lbs. She's the youngest of three siblings.

Just like Sylvie Tellier when she was crowned Miss France 2002, Carla is facing a lot of criticisms from all directions due to her unimpressive height measurement.

:) I don't think it was the best year in MU History just because Eva Ekvall, Evelina Papantoniou, and Denise Quiñones were up there! These girls were just too good for that year! Production-wise, it was one of the worst.

I was channel surfing when I stumbled upon Channel News Asia, they were about to interview Zhuo Ling, Miss China Universe 2002. It was 30 mins long. She was really beautiful, she was wearing no make up and her hair was down. I cannot remember all of it but here is what I recall:

*During the introduction of the show, she was shown in a HK event. And the narrator was saying about how the Chinese Press shunned and even mocked her upon winning second runner up. In short she recieved a lot of criticism from both the government and the press (we already know that).
*She was asked so many interesting questions, but the problem is she really had a hard time expressing her thoughts in English (San Juan deja yu), I had a hard time understanding her. But nevertheless, in her level, she was really expressive and sha has substance.
*She was telling the host that she has been experiencing a lot of diversities after her Miss Universe stint, and there was even a rumor that she was the only candidate the vied for Miss UNiverse China. Of course that's not true.
*It was her dad who helped her all this time, especially during her preparations for San Juan. And she feels proud of herself regarding her achievements in San Juan, despite the fact that she did not recieve help from anyone. No ala-osmel to attend to her so to speak.
*She is very wiilling to help the next Miss China and because of her placing a lot of Chinese girls are inspired to be the next Miss China. She was even praised because she was able to speak her mind out despite the odds surrounding her. A rarity among Chinese women today.

Comments:
I just don't get the fact why a lot of Chinese people say that she was undeserving to represent China. She's very beautiful inside and out. And I think she will really go far compared to Bing Li. Unlike Zhuo Ling, after her Miss World stint, we never knew what happened to her after. And we really weren't able to acces what kind of person she is, because we only see her speak in rare occasions lang. Unlike Zhuo Ling, we are beginning to see her quite often because of the news surrounding her. We've seen her speak her mind out and we see her how she faces her detractors. Zhuo Ling will be a pioneer in beauty pageants in China, though she did not win, she is still considered the Sushmita Sen of China- this would be a start of another Beauty Pageant power house?

She has children--one of them is being pushed to join either Miss Venezuela or Miss Mexico but her daughter isnt too interested.

This is what I know of.

I agree, it's unfair. But, since it didn't say in the website in 2001 and 2002 that the winner will be chosen from a top 10 from voting, we can't really assume that the trend did go on. Because if they did continue, we should have some word of it or they should have shown us the top 10. And since Miss Universe methods in any pageant always leaks (like the way the top ten semis are chosen or the fact that individual judges scores are not gonna be shown), I think that if Miss Photogenic was to be decided upon again by the press photographers, it will be shown and people will know the pre-top 10 (like in 1999). We should stop assuming unless we are an insider for Miss Universe. No one has the monopoly of knowledge here.

I think she will compete again in Miss PR Universe at some time. You are not allowed to compete again in MPRU if you have competed in an International competition, kasi.

But I think she should have accepted it and whole-heartedly accept her 1st RU finish. That's how a true woman should act!

I wonder how these Indian beauty queens act? Any feedback?!? Baka kase parang local beauty queens lang natin na talagang badddd big time sa acting

About Ms China Universe....

I really don't get it either. Pero ang alam ko, they don't respect nor give importance YET to beauty pageants...parang I can't recall them having any beauty pageants at all. The girls there either aspired to be a model or a cultural dancer. Basta parang more on arts sake *** importance nila. They don't see beauty pageant as an art but as a commercial venture eh. It's kind of complicated because they won't be hosting the Olympics if they don't see the commercial value that this can bring to the country. :confusing:

I hope Switzerland choses a beautiful delegate!!! It's been quite a while since a Swiss woman has entered the semis.

Regardign Indian beauty queens, how likely do beauty queens move into showbiz? I mean, do all queens eventually go to the acting business? or those winning a title give you like an acting contract?

regarding china,
i wish they would open more to globalization and participate in international events more. with the olympics 2008 in their country, they should see this as an opportunity given to them to be more involved. actually, china has been involved in more political matters na ata nowadays, di lang talaga masyado sa beauty pageant scene. well, china has a lot of beautiful women, they should be proud of them and their achievements.

We got the costume information from Globalbeauties. It seems GB labelled the costume wrongly, the right costume but they labelled the wrong state.

I know last year Miss Tachira, Aura Zambrano prepared for Miss International in less than 10 days. Two days lang ata ang pagitan after Miss Venezuela she needed to travel na to Japan. And besides, to Osmel, preparation for Miss International is a piece of cake. No need to exert so much effort compared for their MU and MW preparations.

Everyday they are made to visit the gym and pasarela classes... Saka with their diet and speech classes, I don't think the Venezuelan representative for Miss International 2002 would have a hard time preparing in a matter of 10 days after her coronation.

Yeah, Marisol is so stunning! Maintain lang niya yang ganyang look until May and she'll be fine. ;)

aokie...thanks Lara_D and Jensie_G.

My gawd! Sobrang ganda ng costume nila ha! I am betting that it will be one of the top contenders sa national costume award.

By the way, I went kaninang mga 1:30 sa screening ng MTV FASHIONISTA BEST MODEL OF THE WORLD SEARCH PHILIPPINES and I must say that they really have a tough screening there. It was on the 14th floor ng Hotel Intercon (SkyTop). I didn't go in pero I am sure that power(bubbles) know and perhaps fidele na ang isa sa mga nag-screen is yung guy from pop cola na taga-CSB. I didn't get to finish it coz its getting late. I didnt mind going to arkadia in malate for BODYSHOTS kasi wala namang international competition na lalabanan sila unlike FASHIONISTA BEST MODEL OF THE WORLD SEARCH.

By the way, fyi lang: LAST YEAR'S FEMALE CANDIDATE, MARJORIE "2TAY" MARISTELA GRABBED THE BEST CATWALK AWARD IN TURKEY.

Is anyone here watching Miss Teen USA right now? Before the Top 10 fashion walk when the other 41 non-finalists where up on stage has anyone seen Miss Virginia's facial expression? She was trying to hold back the tears. Clearly she's upset.

So far my overall reaction with Miss Teen USA is that, the girls are so perky. Saka the show is so informal, compared to Miss Universe and Miss USA. A relaxed atmosphere.

Just finished watching and recording Miss Teen USA 2002... Here are my thoughts...

GOOD SIDE
-awesome song used during the Opening Number (Parade of States), Announcement of the Top 10 and Jalate Bluepoint Swimsuit competition!
-colorful stage!!!! Yipee!
-colorful Jalate Bluepoint swimsuits!
-Wisconsin was just adorable and lovely!
-Same goes to California...
-Great catwalk skills by Georgia...

BAD SIDE
-super duper lousy evening competition and song! bleccch!
-lousy and annoying rollerbladers during the evening gown competition... duhh!
-California's oh-so tight gown literally "flattened" her boobies...
-absence of Oxana and Shauntay... during the 90's, the MU and MUSA titleholders were present...
-California's "If I was" wrong grammar usage... dapat "If I were..."

FUNNY SIDE
-my gosh... this has got to be the very first time I've ever seen an outgoing and reigning queen work as an announcer... how tacky... cost-cutting galore ang MUO!
-those scooters with the matching smoke effects were hilarious!
-loved those shades! reminded me of the MU96 swimsuit competition!
-South Carolina's childish reaction when she accepted the Congeniality Award...
-they adapted the "Favorites" gimmick of MU2002...
-I believe it's my 1st time ever to see a sounds system be part of the winner's prizes!

Lara_D: Yeah! I noticed Virginia's reactions before and after the announcement of the Top 10... Poor girl... There's still Miss USA pa naman eh... You go girl! :D

New pictures of Oxana

Beautiful Oxana Fedorova, Miss Universe 2002, came back to the place where her life changed, Puerto Rico. Most recognized local designers dressed Oxana for a newspaper (El Nuevo Día) photo shoot at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico's Art Museum). She's described by the press as an exquisite masterpiece.

She represented Puerto Rico at the Miss Universe Pageant, May 1999. The competition took place in Trinidad & Tobago. Brenda was chosen eigth runner up. That year, the first runner up was Philippines, Miriam Quimbao. The winner was Botswana's Mpule Kwelagobe.

Thoughts on Miss Teen USA 2002

-I liked the announcement of the top 10 where the delegates were not stiff and were acting (whether real or not) in suspense.
-It is quite noticable that Vanessa is rather small compared to the other top 10 semis.
-I loved California's hair in the Evening Gown, not pageant patty, but very teen.
-Georgia's gown was amazing!!! But she looks like a delegate competing in Miss USA.
-Vanessa seems so meek at all times. I loved her in the Swimsuits and in the Delegates interview. "Nothing...I have myself, my family and my friends"
-Just before the announcement of the winner, we could see contrasting feelings, Vanessa was in the verge of tears while California was so jolly and bubbly. Right there, anyone could surmise that Vanessa would win.

good day to everyone!!! :)

i didn't expect miss vieques(?) to win. i was really hoping that ms. san juan would win. anyways, the only way to verify is to watch the pageant itself. :)

i watched miss teen usa last night. somehow, if i didn't know that vanessa won i could have been cheering for a different girl. no offense meant but she really did not stand out. maybe it was a close fight. actually, either of the 5 girls in the final five is deserving to win the title. :)

i agree with miss geogia, she knows how to strut her stuff. she glides man!! her modelling stint really shows!

im looking forward for the missvenezuela pageant and i believe that osmel would choose the right girl. and trust me, he knows what he's doing.:)

I am so happy coz they showed Miss Teen USA in just 2 hours! wow...finally, got to watch a pageant that won't drain me out hehehehe....

My observations are:

1. Vanessa was never a favorite...I never heard her being mentioned as a fave in either gown, swimsuit, or even preliminary Q&A.

2. I think sumabit lang sya sa top 5 because her swimsuit was really low as compared to the four others which have more balanced scores in swimsuit and gown.

3. Finally, she really bagged it with her last Q&A...I think that's what made her win because she's so au naturel. She gave the most plain and simple answer (just like Oxana). ;) Oo nga naman, you're just an ordinary person even if you turned to be a boy so why do something drastic...hehehe...

4. I still don't like Georgia...I think it's the hair color and gum shouting smile!

5. If not for Wisconsin, I like Maryland and California for their spunkiness...si Kentucky, I can't feel her sincerity and I don't know why.

6. Haaayy...wedding gowns galore :)

7. Oi...tuwa ako kay South Carolina...happy girl! Saya nya! :D

8. Yup, Wisconsin is the smallest or shall I say petite but I really like her...so elegant and simple. *okay*

Onga... ngayon ko lang naalala yung gums ni Georgia tuwing nagsa-smile siya... Hehehe! How observant of you!

Aside from Virginia who was holding back tears, Utah was also very disappointed for not making it. Well sayang din talaga siya.

Didn't you notice how tacky Marissa's location was? She was situated in between the metal bar thing... Sa taas niya si DJ Bryan Pfeiffer... Talaga cost-cutting galore ang MUO! Saan ka ba naman nakakita ng reigning and outgoing queen na ginawang announcer? Di ba?

Feeling ko nga sobrang love ng production *** Virginia at lalo na ang Pennsylvania kase lagi sila *** nakikita ko sa snippets...along with Kentucky, Maryland, and some others who were in top 10. As I recall, limited lang talaga air time ni Wisconsin at tsaka tingnan mo *** cheering team nya...one piece of cartolina paper..while the others are really BIGGGG cheering teams complete with pix and big cardboards! No one could have thought of Wisconsin...I don't even know where it is?!? Im not sure kung may nakasagot na sa tanong ko before kung san ba tong Wisconsin?!?!? I also saw the Channel News Asia interview and oo nga, wala rin akong maintindihan sa interview ni Miss China pero ang ganda ganda nya talaga...sabi ko na nga ba ginawa sya manikang ewan nung MU pero sans the makeup...:wow: talagang parang china doll na sobrang delicate and refined! *okay* imo, i think she looks better than mw candidate! ;)

The girl that captured everyone's heart, Miss South Carolina, the whole pageant everytime she gets some airtime, natatawa ako. Especially when she was about to receive the award and during the "delegate's favorite" segment. Just watch her Close Up section in the Miss Teen USA site, matatawa ka na eh. power(bubbles): Thanks for the info regarding Wisconsin! I believe Vanessa Semrow is its 1st ever queen! It has never won in Miss USA and Miss America. :wow:

Since the topic is on Wisconsin, can anyone give us a background on how many semifinalists and winners have Wisconsin produced both in Miss USA and Teen USA?

Maybe it was just me pero if live ko napanood yung Teen USA, I would be very surprised to hear 'Wisconsin' in the semis --- not because she does not look pretty (she definitely is!) but because we don't usually hear 'Wisconsin' in the semis. It's like hearing 'Wyoming', 'Montana', 'Delaware'(only in USA), 'Arkansas', 'New Hampshire' or 'Washington'.

*Those states I mentioned were just guesses, I just based it on how I would react upon hearing those states. I'm not saying they don't make it in the semis.*

Compare it naman when you hear 'New York', 'California', 'Texas', 'Louisiana', 'Tennessee', 'Georgia' or 'Kansas'. Parang lagi mo na lang naririnig yung mga states na 'to. Kahit na sabihin mong hindi naman sila that often nag semis, iba pa rin yung dating kapag tinawag states nila.

Musique: To answer your question, Wisconsin placed only twice in the 20 years of the Miss Teen USA. The 1st was in 1984, when Adrianne Hazelwood made it to the Top 10.

Coincidentally, Adrienne Hazelwood also won the Photogenic Award that year.

The latest is of course this year, when Vanessa Semrow won the crown itself! Patience is virtue! :)

Ako... I really love to see Alaska in action both in Miss USA and Miss Teen USA!

hi peeps!!!!:)

miss switzerland 2002 reminds me of dayanara too. :) i think the swiss grils are one of the most underrated girls in beauty pageants. they are beautiful, i thin1k they just need to work on their projection. :)

3 more days before miss venezuela 2002. what time(manila time) will the pageant be held? and who are the confirmed judges?

i've heard of rumors that whatever happens it is still osmel that has the last say if who would be chosen as miss venezuela. is this true?

Technically it will be 4 more days (Philippine time), since Miss Venezuela will take place 6 pm on a Friday night, that will be 6 am Saturday morning. The judges were posted 2 pages back I think. Just can't remember though.

Regarding the Swiss girls, yeah they're beautiful alright, but they manage fumble come May. Sometimes it's the gown like this year's queen, and at times lack of projection, etc.

MISS USA
http://www.pageant.com/missusa2002/images/00win2.jpg

Deion Sanders: What do you find most mind-boggling about the opposite sex?

Shauntay Hinton: I find the most mind-boggling about the opposite sex is how they think. One minute, they're hot and on and they're really feeling me... The next thing they're cold and they don't call and I think, "Why aren't you calling me then?" The way you guys think-- that would be the thing that most mind-boggles me, Deion. (laughs)

MISS UNIVERSE

Phil Simms: What makes you blush?

Oxana Fedorova: (laughs) When I say the wrong things.

MISS TEEN USA

Chris Kirkpatrick: If you were a guy for one day, what would you do?

Vanessa Semrow: If I were a guy for one day, I would go out with my friends, do all the fun things I love to do, enjoy spending time with my family and probably go flirt with the girls.

There's an interesting piece I found in one of the messageboards about Miss Venezuela 2002. It's kinda long but it's a good read.

On FRIDAY THIS WEEK, Venevision will host the three-hour finale of Miss Venezuela (though I can't seem to find it on my Venevision guide...). The 50th anniversary gala of the pageant will reunite many former titleholders who will serve on the judging panel, although celebrations have been scaled down due to the economic and political situation of the country and the OMV. Although we have heard a great deal about the supposed lower quality of this year's candidates, I think that there are at least six or seven capable of taking international titles, and that most of the delegates meet the standard we expect from Venezuela.
Fortunately, unlike last year, the favored competition is between a half-dozen girls, all of whom are almost certain to at least place. Goizeder Azua's surprise victory means that the field is now even more crowded, if only by that one extra candidate, though it's also a minor surprise that Venevision has indeed dropped the number of candidates back to 26 (meaning there is no Miss Carabobo).

Some of the news appearing in print and online:
The media has pinned down Driva Cedeno (NUEVA ESPARTA), Melissa Wolf (MIRANDA), and YARACUY (Vanessa Fanessi) as Osmel's favorites for this year's title, ostensibly because of their height (NVA. ESPARTA, MIRANDA), confidence (YARACUY), and speaking ability (MIRANDA). There are at least half a dozen girls who could take the title and be considered "predictable victories," however, and no one really knows who the organization prefers since there is no Andreina/Cynthia situation this year.
The popular, major four favorites throughout the run-down have been Aida Yespica (AMAZONAS), Maria Fernanda Leon (PORTUGUESA), Vanessa Fanessi (YARACUY), and Amaranta Barroeta (DISTRITO CAPITAL). The "big four" seem to be on everyone's lists, because they are very confident and prepared, though none of them were "eliminated" due to Goizeder's victory. Essentially, Miss Venezuela is as competitive as it was before the Gala de Belleza.

Here are my comments on each of the 26 girls, judging from what I can tell on viewing the Gala de Belleza, their preliminary photos, and their official photos from the OMV and Belleza Venezolana. *** and up means I think they are semifinalist material:

AMAZONAS (Aída María Yéspica Jaime) *****
Aida Yespica, like Cynthia of Puerto Rico and Miriam of Mexico, suffers now from a sudden surge in favoritism. She was the ground favorite to take the Miss World Venezuela crown and considered the perfect candidate for that title. I'm sure she will perform her best, but the pressure has definitely doubled on her shoulders. Like Amaranta Barroeta (DTTO. CAPITAL) she has the black hair/pale skin characteristics of a Miss World representative, along with heavy makeup, but I am not convinced either of those formulas will give her an advantage in this round.

ANZOÁTEGUI (Jésika Gabriela Marcano Román) ****
Jesika Marcano was certainly lucky to succeed the original Miss Anzoategui at nationals but she's certainly a contender in her own right. She gained a lot of steam after Miss Sonrisa, and I think her advantage is her very unique features in a year which will not be remembered for diversity.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200203.jpg
APURE (Johanna Alejandra Madureri Perea) **
Unlike Maria Abrahamz (VARGAS), Johanna Madureri has received little attention for being the younger sister of a former contestant, namely Jessica Madureri (MERIDA 1997). Like Driva Cedeno (NVA. ESPARTA) she is one of the more built contestants,

ARAGUA (Mariángel Ruíz Torrealba) ****
The only candidate with her own website! A complete package. I have seen her runway performances which are very good; she will benefit from toned-down makeup.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200205.jpg
BARINAS (Erika Aulimar Lozada Feretti) ****
In my opinion, a dark horse candidate who may very well cause an upset like last year's Miss Barinas. Unlike Stephanie Brumat with her citizenship issue, Erika Lozada has not received much press so far. She has one of the loveliest faces in the competition and a lot of commentators are picking up on that, although the collective opinion seems to be that she and Anais Gomez (TRUJILLO) need more confidence and projection.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200206.jpg
BOLÍVAR (Mercedes Carolina González Navarro) ***
Certainly an extremely photogenic candidate who reminds some of her immediate predecessor, the very-hyped Carolina Barrios. I feel Mercedes, like Carolina, lacks a little of the projection which is so important in this competition. Her photographs were some of the first to be released, and she has shown a great transformation from her election onwards-not only with the toned-down makeup but also the weight loss. A very unique candidate and the media has certainly let go of her temporary absence at the pageant.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200208.jpg
COJEDES (Kim Lowenthal) ***
What a lot of commentators have missed is that Kim Lowenthal has good projection and catwalk, which I think could place her even though she's somewhat of a controversial delegate, though certainly less than Mercedes Gonzalez (BOLIVAR). Although she is an "exotic beauty" in Global Beauties terminology...

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200209.jpg
COSTA ORIENTAL (Yasmeli Coromoto Pérez Martinez) *
Yasmeli Perez along with Margia Virginia Bastidas (PNSLA. GUAJIRA) looked radiant in her early photos competing for the Miss Zulia title but has since lost a lot of ground. I feel she has not been prepared well and there are many strikes against her.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200210.jpg
DELTA AMACURO (Gilger Márquez) **
Incredible height and a Veruska Ramirez look, but she doesn't seem to have the x-factor.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200211.jpg
DEP. FEDERALES (Sabrina Salemi Nicoloso) *****
I think Sabrina Salemi has the most striking face in the competition, but her dyed hair is a drawback: she looked stunning as a blonde and a black-haired candidate, but is now a middle-brown which fails to bring out her delicate features. She has of the best bodies in the competition, being the only delegate to have a waist that is smaller than the ideal ratio (which is a plus in the modeling world). Her disadvantage: height. Otherwise, she could be a major contender with the media; watch for her on finals night.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200212.jpg
DTTO. CAPITAL (Amaranta Ely Barroeta Seijas) *****
Along with Goizeder Azua she won one of the two most difficult preliminaries to Miss Venezuela. Caracas, D.C. produces an average of 30-50% of the pageant's candidates and both of Amaranta's runners-up are also receiving major attention, proving that she comes in with a powerful title. Her advantages include her modeling experience, her extreme fair skin, and the contrasting dark black hair; her disadvantages are the heavy makeup and Cynthia Lander. If Goizeder's victory is any indication, this may finally be a year for the "natural" look, and no states have ever won the Miss Venezuela title in succession (which is nevertheless less of a "curse" than the Miss Universe phenomenon). Still, Amaranta is one to beat.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200213.jpg
FALCÓN (Diana del Valle Cocho) **
Diana Cocho is actually one delegate who benefits from having heavy makeup, and she has looked far more elegant and polished than in the Miss Falcon/Miss Centroccidental castings.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200214.jpg
GUARÍCO (Alejandra Pulido Arauzo) **
Alejandra Pulido, like the representatives of SUCRE and VARGAS, will have to fight the disadvantage of competing against strikingly similar women.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200215.jpg
LARA (Karelit Coromoto Yépez Morillo) ***
Rumored to be a favorite of Osmel's, perhaps due to her "Andreina Prieto" image. Not ideal measurements, but a great smile and memorable face. Her difficulty will be when the judges match her up against Amaranta Barroeta (DTTO. CAPITAL) and Aida Yespica (AMAZONAS).

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200216.jpg
MÉRIDA (Maiti de Sousa Do Nasciemento) ***
Maiti de Sousa garnered a great deal of attention in Teen Model Venezuela and the universal response was that she has the face of an angel. Her strongest asset is her extremely natural look (I would say even more natural than Goizeder Azua), which may be in vogue this year and may send her to a placement.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200217.jpg
MIRANDA (Melissa Alexandra Wolf Ehrenzeller) *****
Whether Melissa Wolf can actually take the Miss Venezuela title is debatable, but many have her at least placing in the competition. Her facial features set her apart by far from all of the other blondes in the competition, and she also enjoys massive height and speaking advantages. A very elegant and imposing delegate wearing a respectable title.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200218.jpg
MONAGAS (Enid Solsiret Herrera Ramirez) ****
I believe Solsiret Herrera's gown design is the only one released so far, and it certainly fits her very well. She is a major favorite with the public but I think her features suffer from the similarity complex, and she is very likely to be matched against PORTUGUESA and ARAGUA.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200219.jpg
NUEVA ESPARTA (Driva Isabela Cedeño Salazar) *****
Driva Cedeno left the spotlight about midway through the pre-competition news and has now returned, so she can be considered both an "early" and "extremely late" favorite. She has many advantages: media attention, height, modeling experience, and of course her being the only candidate of color in the competition. Driva is also wearing a title which since Jacqueline Aguilera has become extremely prestigious in Miss Venezuela. She could, however, benefit from a new hairstyle.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200220.jpg
PNSLA. GUAJIRA (María Virginia Bastidas Iwkewitsch) *
Certainly the media has not been kind with Maria Virginia Bastidas (PNSLA. GUAJIRA), placing her at the bottom of the competition as they did with her immediate predecessor, Nieves Medina Cestari. She has perfect measurements, but not enough stage presence to capitalize on that asset. Many commentators are harshest on her apparent lines in the face.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200221.jpg
PORTUGUESA (María Fernanda León Pinto) *****
Maria Fernanda Leon competed in arguably the best year ever, 1999, and in a year which has been attacked as the exact opposite, she has emerged to become a major contender for the title. Her relatives said early on that she had matured massively since the competition and she will be Osmel's first test to see if he can halt the Natascha Borger/Astrid Carati phenomenon. Although I do not think she is as strong for international competition as the other front-runners, her confidence and growth are undeniable. Definitely a complete turn-around from 1999.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200222.jpg
SUCRE (María Carolina Casado Chópite)**
Matched up against VARGAS, I feel Maria Carolina Casado has the inevitable disadvantage, and it doesn't help that she resembles GUARICO as well. Oddly enough, last year's Valentina Montero (SUCRE 2001) also had the "twin" factor with Mery de los Rios (GUARICO 2001).

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200223.jpg
TÁCHIRA (Ix-Balanke Tibisay Montilva Mora) **
She has certainly improved since her election, also considering that she has had some of the longest preparation time of any of the delegates. Like Natascha Borger (YARACUY 2000), Tibisay has a round face, which will probably not resonate well with judges used to seeing perfect and chiseled lines on contestants. Her hairstyle, much ridiculed already, does not suit her and I think people will inevitably draw comparisons between her and Aura Zambrano (TACHIRA 2001).

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200224.jpg
TRUJILLO (Anaís Gómez) ***
An Eva Ekvall successor who like Erika Lozada (BARINAS) started getting attention after her beautiful official photographs came out. Certainly she has very striking, elegant looks, but whether or not she can project that remains in doubt.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200225.jpg
VARGAS (María Andreína Abrahamz Carvallo) ***
Maria Andreina Abrahamz received considerable coverage for being the half-sister of a former Miss Vargas and Miss Venezuela World 1980, and she was the only blonde to win a special award, giving her an advantage over the "clone factor."

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200226.jpg
YARACUY (Vanessa Carolina Fanessi Auteri) ****
Vanessa Fanessi has the makings of a winner: the only delegate with multiple international titles to her name, as well as perfect measurements and certainly a great deal of confidence. Since Miss Sonrisa the spotlight has turned elsewhere but the media certainly believes she will do all she can to convert her first crown to something higher.

http://www.missvenezuela.com/2002/images/candidatas/thums/200227.jpg
ZULIA (Ana Graciela Quintero Nava) ***
I believe she is officially the tallest delegate (though that title seemingly keeps jumping around). The strongest of the Miss Zulia finalists (though I anticipate Suhail Rodriguez will be major competition next year) and arguably the only one who benefited from training in Caracas, D.C.

Lara_D: Thanks for posting these here. I'm pretty much sure Osmel will make the right choice...

Zulia is indeed the tallest candidate this year... 1.84 meters = 6 feet .5 inches... Whoawww...

I have a feeling she will still go. You know naman ang Bb. They're not into those stuff. Parang si Osmel yan si Madamme Stella, her first priority is to compete. With a "who-cares-about-those-issues" mentality. IMHO, parang ang deadma talaga ng mga girls natin. I just notice it. Our girls haven't got much debt if ever they will give a response with this issue. Baka isipin ng mga tao, "haay naku baka pumapapel lang yan." Perhaps they would just give some motherhood/lame or worse, pageant patty statements. (But I'm not generalizing though) This Nigerian controversy isn't really a big issue here in our country compared to the other countries who said they will boycott the pageant. The "deadma syndrome" of the Pinoy has struck again.

Only Madame Araneta has the final say on this. Unless BPCI releases an official statement saying otherwise, Kate is definitely on her way to Abuja, Nigeria in November.
