I think Miss Universe herself has the power to choose which national pageants she'll attend. In this case, Miss Nicaragua Claudia Salmeron was a very good friend of Amelia in Panama. This may be the reason why Amelia easily accepted Claudia's invitation to visit her country.

I remember Brooke Lee had development a great friendship with Miss Malaysia Trincy Low during the Miss Universe '97 pageant. Brooke promised Trincy that if she wins the crown, she will pay her a visit in her country. Brooke won and she never broke her promise. She was present during the Miss Malaysia Universe '98 coronation in Kuala Lumpur.

Chen Lili, a 24-year old transsexual from Sichuan Province, was shut out of the Miss Universe contest by organizers, saying she is an artificial woman.

In a fax to the Sichuan organizing committee, the Miss Universe headquarters says Chen is disqualified because she is a transsexual. It says there never has been any such case in the 53-year history of the contest.

Lili was granted permission early this week to participate in the international event by Miss Universe-China contest officials in New York.

"A sex-change woman registering for the Miss Universe contest is something that has never happened before," Miss Universe selection committee chairman Zhang Ruiling told reporters.

Cao Gang, a beauty contest expert in Shanghai, offered his support to Lili: "She has been granted the status as a woman, and is protected and recognized by law. There is no reason to kick her out."

"Another media circus. They just want to have fun," Netizens addressed the issue a sheer farce, "Even Chen herself has deliberately staged the cooperation media gimmick."

In order to reach the Miss Universe competition, to be held in Ecuador on June 1, Lili must first win a competition in the Sichuan Province, located in the southwest part of China.

"I hope to clinch the crown," Lili said, after learning she would be allowed to compete earlier this week.

A successful model, Lili made headlines earlier this month when she was allowed to change her identification card, a move recognizing her status as a woman. "I could not be happier now, as my female status has become protected by the law," she said, in a sina report.

Lili underwent transsexual surgery in November, and applied to have her status legally changed in January.

Earlier this week when Lili was allowed to participate in the contest, a lesbian and gay rights commission official applauded it.

"It's surprising that she was allowed for this competition," said Dusty Araujo, asylum coordinator at the International Lesbian and Gay Human Rights Commission. "The most egregious human rights violations around the world happen to transgender people, so I'm surprised that officials are open to this possibility."

Araujo believes other transsexuals in and outside China have paved the way for Lili to be as out and accepted as she is. Araujo cited Jin Xin, an award-winning Chinese choreographer and dancer who has used her success as a platform to speak out about being transsexual, and Dana International, the transsexual Israeli pop star who made worldwide news when she won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998.

"Dana was the first one to break into a public, international event," Araujo told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network. "She broke the barriers for others."

"Once the transgender community gets news of Chen Lili, we could see more and more transgender people entering these competitions," Araujo said.

Bulgarian Rossitsa Ivanova, aged 17, from the city of Russe was the lucky one from her hometown chosen to enter the Miss Bulgaria 2004 contest, that takes place at the end of March.

The auditioning in Russe took place on Thursday evening, and is part of the 30 regional castings carried out by Visages Models agency to pick the 30 Miss Bulgaria finalists. The ceremony in the Danube city was hosted by veteran Iren Onteva who is currently one of Bulgaria's most popular fashion models.

Experts from Visages have already chosen 17-year-old Ivanina Mineva from Silistra, and same-age Irina Marinova from Targovishte to compete fro this year's Miss Bulgaria title.

The final one of the regional castings should take place on February 28 and 29 at the Kempinski Hotel Zografski in capital Sofia. Then, all those who didn't make it to the local auditionings can try their fortune, and maybe get to appear on the Miss Bulgaria "big night."

The last time Haiti sent a delegate to Miss Universe was way back in 1989.

The last time they placed was in 1975, when Gerthie David almost won the crown by placing 2nd overall.

Jensie_G: Yeah! Nakita ko yung teaser ng Miss USA and Miss Universe while watching the oscars! :) Grabe... Napatitig ako ng super akala ko kung ano na.. Hehehe...

Dahil walang class kanina, pinanood ko ang talent competition ng BB Pilipinas sa Sta lucia grand mall.. Andun si Ella Evangelista, Mafae (Ganda talaga niya!), Jezari Javier.. :)
Whil observing the candidates, I think the three girls might get in, Patricia, Jeanne, and Maricar. Eto na ***** yung bet ko sa bb...

Si Patricia nag-karate... Hehehe..
Si Jeanne she got the looks and the poise.
Si Maricar.. Galing niya, pang Miss Universe, puwede.. :D YUn lang.. Good luck sa March 6! :)

The final casting for sorting out this year's Miss Bulgaria contenders entered into its second, and last day on February 29. The last of the young beauties willing to try their luck were able to show up for auditioning at the Kempinski Hotel Zografski in Sofia.

Organizers at local agency Visages Models already held a number or regional castings across the country, in a quest for promising young belles. Those who didn't make it to the local auditionings can now try their fortune at the final one, which also continues on Sunday.

The Miss Bulgaria 2004 ceremony, which is one of the most eagerly awaited events for the country's fashion workers, is scheduled to take place at the end of March.

I agree, JENSIE_G... When I first saw Zizi Lee, I was stunned & she carried well her evening gown while she strut on the stage!! she really exudes this vibrance & exuberance that you can notice easily & also very witty & intelligent... I think this is the best aruban candidate that I've seen since Lola Odrogossa (spelling?).... Even though she lost in MW01, I think she is the best contestant ever I've seen!!!

I was at Cubao yesterday and was expecting a grand parade like what usually happens every year. But there was none of that this time. Instead, a mini-show was held at Farmers Plaza.

It's hard to come up with a top 12 (or is it top 10 this year?) because there are a lot of pretty ladies. So I won't come up with that list. I have 5 names though who I realy want to advance to the semis, even win the titles.

The Fabulous Five:

Jean Harn – Next to Patricia in the face department, very comfortable on stage.
Karla Bautista – Vety Filipina looking. Skin tone is perfect. Looks better in person.
Maan Bayot – this girl isn't very photogenic, as she looks mature in pictures. But in person, she looks young and sweet-looking. She actually looks like Angelica Panganiban.
Tracy Javelona – Alluring, very nice smile. Poised and has a good bearing.
Patricia Francisco – has the most beautiful face among the candidates this year.

Pleasant Surprises:
Kooky Ken dela Cruz - cute
Margauxh Mitz Flores - gets the Kim Yee Award
Leila Cuenza - the best smile in the group

Disappointments:

Aizza Brinas – stocky, has the widest body among the candidates
Maricar Balagtas – if she looks old in pictures, she even looks older in person. I overheard somebody saying “ O, bakit ang tanda na nyan?”

The rest are okay. It's anybody's ballgame actually. Everybody has a fair chance to shine on Saturday.

Bottom Three:
Liwayway Baterna, Stephanie Balagtas, and Heidi Borja. They just don't have it.

In case you didn't notice, two women from the past who wore the same number tag won the top plum. It's a lucky number tag indeed.

Pebbles Asis and Karen Agustin wore the #19 tag and represented us in Miss Universe 1987 and 2002 respectively.

OBSERVATIONS, COMMENTS, REACTIONS... :D

1. First of all, I'm happy with the result for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2004 crown. No other woman deserved to bring it on than Maricar. A well-deserved victory indeed.

2. Maricar's gown was the exact one Zorah Andam wore during her farewell walk 2 years ago.

3. Tracy's gown appears to be a green and more conservative version of what Denise Quiñones wore during MU2001.

4. Ella Evangelista's farewell walk gown was the same one worn by Karen Agustin and Carla Balingit during their respective Miss Universe pageants.

5. The new Bb. Pilipinas theme is more jumpy, bouncy and refreshing as compared to previous ones.

6. After 9 years, a new design for the winners' sashes have been introduced. Wheww!

7. The stage design and layout appeared to be a poor, poor copy of that of MU2001 in Bayamon. It may look appealing on TV, but definitely not in actual appearance.

8. A lot of people left Araneta early when their respective bets did not make it to the Top 10.

9. If I am not mistaken, for the first time ever in Bb. Pilipinas history, the new set of winners were announced directly from the Top 10. No Top 5 were called. This smells fishy for me. Nevertheless, I'm still pleased Maricar is going to Miss Universe.

10. Candidate #25 Patricia Francisco, in my opinion, deserved to be left out in the cold after her lackluster display of catwalk skills during the evening gown competition. Her gown carried her and not the other way around. Tsk tsk. Bad.

11. Surprises of the night were Candidates #3 Liwayway Baterna, #6 Christy del Rosario (super mega duper surprise indeed) and #9 Gemma Gatdula.

12. Candidate #2 Jeanne Harn was another girl who deserved to be snubbed in the semi-finals after opting for a poor, poor gown. Another factor was her hairdo. Her hair was her crowning glory. Why put it up?

13. All in all. I got 6 out of 10. Not bad. I got the Bb. Pilipinas Universe winner. No problems or qualms with that.

Sobrang hindi ko nagustuhan ang paghohost ni Ariel Rivera! Eww..

Poor production for this year's pageant. Sayang magaganda pa man din yung batch ngayon, pero yung production (all in all) hindi ko nagustuhan. Sayang..

Sa mga past queens, si Kate Manalo ang pinakagusto ko. Striking talaga yung pagkaputi ng skin niya eh. :)

Naawa ako kay Honeylet... Grabe pa yung sigaw ng audience.. I heard umiyak daw siya after that Q & A? Well... Sayang..

Why is it that when the judges make up simpler questions to make the candidates' lives simpler, they answer in return with super complicated answers?

And about the judges, Bakit kaya judge si Raffy Rodriguez (Son of Annabel Rama) and rich alvarez (basketball player). wala lang just wonderin. :P

As I expected, Balagtas is the MU.... truly deserving to be the MU!! KUDOS to her & all ladies!! Who were the standouts in the coronation night??? Who were semi-finalists?? Any stupid answers delivered by semi-finalists (i.e. "Quiet Pls...."???? Who were the winners of special awards??? I waited a long tym in the bbpilipinas website & there's no vid feed & all I can saw was pictures... This year's MU will be as excited as ever!!! I wish her beauty will not be overlooked this tym around by judges... I have big expections this tym now that we have a chance to capture the crown w/c was been taken to us 31 yrs. ago... It's pay back tym!!! I wish Karla Bautista will be fully-train & trim her body... Maan... aaahhh.... no comment... I don't like her.... Where is Jeanne Harn & Margaux Flores?!? I've visited one pageant thread & they commented that Patricia Francisco is not good in catwalk skills.... & also can u post what are the most beautiful gowns wore by the candidates??? Thnx **** coz d me napanood e.... WHAT R UR COMMENTS GUYZ/GALZ???

Some commemts on BB Pilipinas 2004.

1. Maricar Balagtas was the expected winner for the Universe crown. I like her a lot, especially in this pic:

But I hate to admit that she sometimes looks old eventhough she's quite young. i cannot picture her chances yet in Ecuador. But I hope she's gets proper training.

2. I didn't quite like Karla Bautista at first but I so loved her during the Coronation Night. If it weren't for Maricar, she would have been the rep to Miss U.

3. I honestly don't know if I like Maan Bayot for International. For me, she doesn't have that quality of an international beauty queen. But maybe because I'm dwelling on her kinda chubby cheeks. Tracy Javelona is my choice for International. But I think another runner-up finish for Maan is devastating.

4. Patricia Francisco, my pre-pageant fave, is a big disappointment. I hated her during the gown competition. And she seems over-confident. Tsk, tsk.

5. The Universe and World reps are good. Just hope a proper training will take place. Maricar should improve more on her speaking skills. but I know she has improved.

That's all...any news on the new Miss Paraguay?

There was this particular candidate (I just forgot her number) na talagang nagkalat, we were too busy laughing to remember what she said. Basta sobrang sablay ng mga sagot. If there's a title for "BinoBOBANG Pilipinas" it would be her. hehehe

Regarding Maricar, well, technically she has been exposed/trained in pageants for quite sometime now. She was really polished that night, and you could see in her the drive to get the top plum (sumali ka ba naman for the third time). So you can say she had a very long time of pageant training compared to a Miss Venezuela- which is only nine months. I think this is a tactic that can really work for us, and obviously Madamme Stella thought of this beforehand. We know our bet is selected by March, so there isn't much time to prepare for Miss Universe, so mas ok nga na an experienced queen ang manalo.

#14 was ok sana, but of course... the Q&A portioned killed her chances. But it's not the end of the road for her. She can try a couple of years after, like Maricar did.

Thanx Musique & LARA_D for ur comments!!! I hope Maricar is really well-prepared in this upcoming MU.... Agree to u Musique, No offense to Maricar Balagtas but she sometimes looks old for a 21 yr.-old gal.... The batch this year are kinda taller!!! I think what they should do is focus in their communication & catwalk skills to improve their chances to be a serious threat to other candidates such as Japan & Greece, as well.... & also the gowns... I think they should choose very promiscuous gowns... they're kinda a trend nowadays.... Ahhhh... what else... Gud luk to them!!!

The picture quality isn't that good but you can see Maricar has the poise indeed. I need to get a better digicam, hehehe the good ones are worth P80k, the ones professionals use. hehehe but don't have the money for that yet.

Favor lang please since sabi mo nanood ka sa araneta pede paki post q & a ng mga nanalo. ksi un fren ko cousin nya candidate # 25 pero d nanalo at nagsu2migaw ng luto ang bruha sa text na pinadala sa akin dhil from d very start alam ng si maricar ang winner, sya daw pinakamarami special awards? totoo ba? pero not bcoz dmi ka special awards win ka na di ba?

i remember sumali na b4 yang si balagtas at runner up lang yan ni andam ba o alagao not quite sure at may pagka ruffa mae as in bobita sumagot yan, same thing wid bayot. Jas hope nag improve na sila since dey will b representing our country internationally.

sarap tlaga manood ng live sa araneta, ilang beses din ako nakapanood b4 nung time nina charlene, aileen, jennele bautista (dethroned) c mirriam pumalit, ska si tricia b un na nadethroned din. laugh trip tlaga pag q & a na dhil ang daming ruffa mae para ka ngang nanood ng contest sa eat bulaga as in super laugh in tlaga, dis year ba ganon pa din?

tama un isang pexer kasi mdali **** ang tanong *** lang nagpapahirap.

do u think, may chance na tayo to grab a title dis time? let's hope n see. :*)

"Kontrobersyal" is a show in ABS hosted by Boy Abunda (i think). I just dunno the schedule though.
