Miss Bulgaria Contest 2004 to be run by VisagesLifestyle: 11 February 2004, Wednesday.

Bulgarian model agency Visages, run by top fashion diva Evgenia Kalkandzhieva, is going to organize this year's national beauty contest Miss Bulgaria, Visages officials announced.

Current top model and Visages' President Zheni Kalkandzhieva, who won Miss Bulgaria 1996 and ranked sixth at the follow-up glamorous Miss World, participated in the competition for running the prestigious contest, organized by Darina Pavlova, widow of Bulgarian tycoon Iliya Pavlov, who was murdered last year. Pavlova's model agency Miss Bulgaria Organization holds the licence for selecting girls to participate in numerous global beauty contests, including Miss World, Miss Universe and Miss Terra.

The final seeding selection for young Bulgarian girls, aged between 17 and 25, who have not yet heard the wedding bells, is going to take place on February 28 and 29. The glamorous show will be staged on March 20 at Sofia's National Palace of Culture.

I just hope the news item on Sweden's "absense in Miss Universe 2004" is an isolated one.

I've checked the official TV3 website (http://www.tv3.se) and found no articles whatsoever discussing the cancellation of this year's Froken Sverige pageant.

Let's hope for the best.

Sweden has the BEST record in Europe. It has achieved a feat that no other nation from that corner of the world could even come close to. It has had 3 Miss World and 3 Miss Universe winners.

Highlights of the Miss USA 1994 pageant:

1. Nadine Tañega, a Caviteña, represented Hawaii in the pageant. She was among the semi-finalists.

2. Our very own Bb. Pilipinas Universe Charlene Gonzalez was present and was guest of honor during the pageant. She was with then Tourism Secretary Vicente Carlos. They were there to promote Manila as the upcoming Miss Universe venue in May. A 5-minute or so documentary on the Philippines was beamed during the pageant.

3. Pop star Prince released his hit The Most Beautiful Girl in the World during the pageant's live telecast. It was originally the song to be performed during the Miss Universe '94 special production with outgoing queen Dayanara Torres.

MUMBAI: The Pond’s Femina Miss India 2004 which is slated to take place on 27 March, is all set for the regional selections slated to be held in the main metros of the country, starting 11 February.

This round will shortlist contestants who will then move on to the grand finale and the winners will then go on to represent the country at various International beauty pageants.

100+ hopefuls showed up last night to vie for the remaining 40 slots and join 20 others (chosen the day before) for tonight's final screening. The ff three women topped the pre-finals elimination of the remaining 40 hopefuls : Maricar Balagtas, Maane Bayot and Patricia Francisco.

i think BPCI was right in not not taking in Juliana as one of the candidates. it's understandable, and they were just trying to avoid further controversies. her fault din. if she had intentions of joining binibini pala before pa, she should not have appeared in a movie once rated x by the mtrcb, and have a sex column pa in fhm.

i think di naman ganun ka-bitter si juliana. nasasayangan lang siguro siya with the missed opprotunities while she was preparing for the pageant. she's even willing na bumalik again for audition in the coming years.

Q: In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

A: Oh, ah, it’s the same thing I’ll do. I think if he’s been in the moon for so long, when he comes over, he wants to change, I guess.

Q: Let’s make believe that all of a sudden you have a million dollars, what is the first thing you would buy and why would you buy?

A: A house and lot. Because it is the most expensive thing and I can’t afford it. If I have a million bucks, I’ll buy a house and lot and live by myself and other people, of course.

Q: Miss New Zealand, many Americans are curious about your country, why don’t you does tell us about New Zealand.

A: Well, New Zealand is a beautiful country, it’s a very natural green country. And if you like easy outdoor life, then you like New Zealand.

Q: And at home there in New Zealand, have you watched Miss Universe in CBS?

A: Well, I’ve been watching Miss Universe pageant since I was about 8 years old and I can’t believe I am here now in it.

Q: Miss New Zealand, have you enjoyed your visit to St. Louis?

A: Well, it’s been wonderful. It’s one thing never to forget. And the best thing of my visit has been the people here in St. Louis. They’ve been so friendly and they made even one feel so welcome.

Q: Should you be the new Miss Universe, you will become a symbol to young women and girls all over the world, what would you like to tell them?

A: Yes, I think I wanted to tell them that have their own personality, always try to stand on both feet on the floor, and try to..., well, I think that’s the most important, always stand on both feet on the floor, and try to do other people happy and ... help.

Q: From your friends at home and your sisters contestants here at the pageant, you have an idea of what today’s young women want to say to the world. What message as Miss Universe would you want to give on their behalf?

A: I would like to tell everybody that they should really work hard, to try to achieve everything that they want to pursue and that always be very faithful and keep on working.

Q: What do you intend to do now that you have finished your study?

A: I would like to carry on now with my fashion designing. I would like to carry on with ballet dancing... classical ballet... and maybe marry and have a family.

Q: You’re going to be very busy?

A: I will take everything one at a time.

Q: Now, are you going to design clothing with your own line or are you going to work in a manufacturing?

A: I am going to do my own line because I have many original ideas. I don’t want to work in a company because they may change them.

Q: You are going wind up the interview with a commercial for your own line. You have to do it in English.

A: OK, next Christmas, ask Santa Claus to send you.. to give you a feather design by me.

1988- Miss Thailand Porntip Nakihurankok

Q: How did you get to be Miss Thailand from Pasadena?

A: Well, you don’t have to live in Thailand to be a Thai person. I hope I’ve set a good example for the Thai people in my country for I am a Thai person and yes, I did grew up in Los Angeles, but I am a Thai person throughout. And I live a Thai culture, and I speak the Thai language and I just want everyone to know that I am proud to be a Thai woman.

Q: Who first thought you your English?

A: My English? Well, English is loudly spoken at home, also Thai is loudly spoken at home so I kept my language. So I think I owe it to Big Bird. I watched Sesame Street a lot when I was a little girl.

Q: Now, I know that you have a charity project for Thai children that you work on it.

A: Yes, unfortunately Thailand is not only a beautiful country that rich in culture and tradition, but it has a problem too on our children. In fact, 10,000 of our children died last year of malnutrition, and I am hoping that as Miss Thailand I can make a difference for these children.

1989- Miss Holland Angela Visser

Q: If you have to describe the French and Dutch people, how would you characterize them?

A: Well, the Dutch people in comparing, for example, to the Mexican people, are a little bit more moderate. It doesn’t mean that they are not nice people, but I see here in a lot of Mexican, they have such a lot of temperament. Maybe inside the Dutch people have it too, but we kept it a little bit hidden. If I have to say more about it…. I love to live in Holland. We are a very peaceful country. We are a very peaceful people and I’ve been borne and raised there, and I love it.

Q: About the other candidates here, who would you say has the most different upbringing other than yourself?

A: Well, my childhood was very lucky. I have a great family. I love my parents and my brother, and I think what I’ve noticed about all these girls is that they are very lucky inside. And we discussed about different kinds of families they came from, and I would say maybe it’s Ms. Nigeria. I had a conversation with her in the bus and I was really like amazed because for example, she has to be home at 7:00 in the evening and we started dinner in Holland then, you know, so if you talk about those things that are completely different, so she’s happy the way she is raised and I think we all are.

1990- Miss Norway Mona Grudt

Q: If you are a judge tonight, who would you vote to be the new Miss Universe, and why?

A: I think it will be very difficult to answer that, but I think it’s Miss Finland. Because she is always in a good mood, and always kind to everybody and sharing somebody open arms when they are down.

1991- Miss Mexico Guadalupe Jones

Q: What is the most difficult problem facing your country today, and what do you think should be done about it?

A: Well, I think the most recently thing we have in the hands is the free trade we are working on it. I think it will be hard for my country because we have to compete with a very advanced technology from other countries that are richer than we are. But I know we gonna make it. I know we are a big country and our people are great, so I feel hope with my people.

Q: If you became leader of your country tomorrow, what is the first thing you would do?

A: I would speak to the children, tell them that I am there for them. Because they are the foundation of our every nations, and I like them to know that I am there for them.

Q: If you were to become Miss Universe, what is the single most important thing you would want to accomplish?

A: I think that we will have to work basing ourselves on our past to working hard in the present to provide for a better future. I believe that we should turn our energies to the children of the world to provide for them a better future because that is where our future lies.

Q: What, for you, is the essence of being a woman?

A: I think they know woman by itself the very fact that you’re a woman is a gift from God, which all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, and is a woman. And a woman is one who shares love and who shares and shows the man what love, caring and sharing is all about. That is the essence of being a woman.

Q: If you have a power to do anything you wish to improve the status of women in your country, what would you do?

A: Well, actually I think they’ve come a long way so far. I do wish that people will look at women as just the same as they look men, that is equally in power. I know a lot of women can do anything that they choose and I am one of those women, and there are 80 of those women that are here today. So I think women are doing very well, but I like people to treat them as they should.

A: I believe that they can learn very much because thanks to most women, men are here in this beautiful theater seeing this beautiful contest, and applauding me because I am a beautiful woman.

A: I would eat everything in the world. You do not understand. I would eat everything twice.

A: Oh, she has missed so much in terms of technology. But unfortunately, she also missed the lack of sensitivity to our environment. She’ll miss now clean air, regular climates... that kind of thing. I will tell her that we have to... or I shall say in the process of turning around, that’s what she’s missing, in my opinion, fresh air, good clean earth.

Q: If Miss Universe would become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Universe?

A: Personally, I think Miss Universe is a symbol of a woman as well as she celebrating her femininity. And I believe (thank you), I believe if she would found pregnant and it would not in any way interrupt her duties, I believe as a woman she should celebrate her femininity.

Q: Right now, there is a protest going on outside here calling the Miss Universe pageant
disrespectful of women. Convince them that they are wrong.

A: I think pageants like the Miss Universe pageant, give us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed forces, be it politics. It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions that makes us strong and independent that we are today.

It took just a day for contest organisers at the Miss Universe-China headquarters in New York to decide that Miss Chen Lili, 24, who underwent a sex-change operation, could enter the pageant.

Miss Chen, who works as a fashion model in Sichuan province, was elated on hearing the news late on Sunday, according to the Chinese news portal Sina.com.

'I hope to clinch the crown,' the pretty 1.73m model told the province's selection committee chairman Zhang Ruiling after he broke the news to her.

Mr Zhang said he had to check if there were any pageant rules barring a person who had undergone a sex-change from taking part.

'A sex-change woman registering for the Miss Universe contest is something that has never happened before,' said Mr Zhang, who said he had been stumped for an answer when Miss Chen asked him about it last Saturday.

Born Chen Yongjun, the leggy Sichuan native underwent surgery to become a woman last November.

But the road to fame could still be denied to her.

To secure a place in the Miss Universe-China pageant, she Chen must first beat other aspiring beauty queens from Sichuan province.

This year's Miss Universe pageant will take place in Quito, Ecuador, on June 1.

banshe1981: yeah pwede. nung 2001, india sent a very short delegate to miss universe. her real height was 5'2" but somehow she wore shoes with really high heels. kaya ang press released height niya ay naging 5'6".
