It appears Marc Anthony's broken marriage can't be mended.

The on-again, off-again union of the Latin singer and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres appears to have wrapped up for good, People reports in its upcoming issue.

The missus, who had taken Anthony's real last name, Muniz, filed for divorce on January 20 in Miami-Dade County, Florida, calling their union "irretrievably broken."

The couple, who wed in 2000, have two children, Cristian, 2, and Ryan, 5 months. Anthony also has a nine-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

The beauty queen is seeking alimony and child support for their two sons.

Anthony's record label offered "no comment" Wednesday on the divorce report.

Wedded bliss for the camera-friendly couple has been short-lived ever since they swapped vows in a quickie Sin City ceremony in May of 2000 following the Blockbuster Awards in Los Angeles. The spontaneous nuptials meant only his family and some friends were attendance.

Their first split came two years later. No reason was given at the time and the couple never filed for separation or divorce.

Five months later, the duo appeared to have patched things up when they renewed their vows in a ceremony at San Juan Cathedral in their native Puerto Rico.

Described as a lavish affair, his rep called it the "church wedding that they never had." And this time around, her family was involved.

The reconciliation even produced a son, Ryan Anthony Muniz, born last August in New York. But baby wasn't enough to keep Anthony and Torres together.

He's reportedly in the studio these days recording a song with onetime gal-pal Jennifer Lopez for her upcoming movie, Shall We Dance?

Born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, the Grammy-winning Anthony developed a huge following in Latin America before taking American by storm with his 1999 self-titled English-language debut album, which spawned the mega-hit "I Need to Know," and went triple platinum.

RECENTLY I read two separate articles in which the local promoter of the Miss Barbados Universe pageant and 1998’s Miss Universe, Trinidad’s Wendy Fitzwilliam, stated that Barbados would be a good venue to host an international Miss Universe show. I do not want to sound overly cynical, but what are they thinking?

Most of the time big international pageants are held in the country from which the reigning queen hails, but sometimes certain factors prevent this from happening. Some of these include the religious nature of the country in question, since some Muslim countries refuse to hold such events, and a country’s political state of affairs. Another very important factor is whether the country has the infrastructure to support the venture in terms of adequate venues to host the show and hotels to accommodate the participants and everyone else involved in it.

In Barbados we do not have the religious and political issues that may prevent the pageant from being held here, but let us be honest; we do not have the hotel rooms or an adequate venue to host such a show. From what I have seen, the international Miss Universe pageant is usually held in big conference rooms at big hotels that look like skyscrapers. Do we have such facilities here yet?

I presume the people that made the statement were thinking about the Gymnasium, but that facility was never designed for shows and it is not set up to accommodate such an event. It is also not big enough in terms of its audience capacity.

We must also remember that Barbados has never had a winner, or even a finalist, in a Miss Universe pageant. Trinidad has had two victors so far as well as a Miss World winner, and Jamaican girls have also won major international pageants. It is true one of our contestants, Stephanie Chase, won the talent section at Miss World a couple of years ago, but that is not the same thing as the big prize. And how can we be thinking in such an ambitious manner when we still haven’t got our local pageants right? Too many of our recent pageants have been ending up in disputes between the organisers and the girls involved. I am sure the organisers of the international pageant take those factors into consideration when they are looking at venues as well.

In our enthusiasm to get our name on the world map, I think we tend to go overboard and overstate our capacity to host certain events, not recognising all the logistics involved.

It makes me wonder what we will do next. Will Barbados submit a bid to hold the 2020 Olympic Games if Obadele Thompson, Barry Forde, Andrea Blackett and Junior Greenidge come back from Athens this year with medals in their various disciplines?

There aren't many public venues left where leering at young women is still considered acceptable behaviour.

The organizers of the Miss Universe Canada 2004 pageant would, I'm sure, take issue with the suggestion that any leering goes on during the "modern" beauty contest. Today, after all, these events are all about instilling grace and confidence in their participants and presenting a portrait of well-rounded young womanhood — educated, ambitious young womanhood with professional dreams, an appreciation for other cultures and a desire to mentor youth, if the general tenor of the contestants' bios is to be believed. They're not about who looks best in a red bikini and spiked heels.

To reflect this progress, the contestants aren't even called "contestants" any more. "Welcome, Miss Universe Canada 2004 Delegates," reads a poster in the lobby of Casino Rama, the Orillia-area gaming house and resort upon which 50 would-be beauty queens from across the country have descended this weekend to fight for a chance to represent Canada at the official Miss Universe pageant in Quito, Ecuador this June.

Progress aside, however, looking good in a red bikini and spiked heels is still an integral component of any 21st-century Miss Universe hopeful's three dimensions. Which is why tonight I find myself leering, along with a couple of thousand other men — most of them considerably older than my 29 years and hurtling into or beyond retirement age, this being a casino — and pageant emcee Alan Thicke, in the direction of the stage while 50 pretty young things ranging in age from 18 to around 25 strut their stuff in the swimsuit competition. I feel sorry for the fathers in the audience.

Naturally, the pageant tries its damnedest to get us to recognize the woman behind the T&A. One contestant, Thicke tells us, is "an accomplished chess champion." Another is studying fashion design and "plans to incorporate her native heritage into her creations." Another is studying criminology with "the possibility of pursuing a career as a private detective." Thicke, smarm personified, seems particularly intrigued by the "registered Swedish massage relaxation therapist."

All this insight comes, mind you, while the women prance about the stage to booming trance with the obligatory pageant death mask fixed on their faces, pausing periodically to pose and give us a look at the goods from all angles. Already, during the opening "production number," they've slunk around the risers in sheer white mini-dresses and matching, clingy pantsuits while attempting a confused kind of line dance.

After the bikinis and another miserably overwrought ballad from Can-Con country crooner Amy Sky come the evening gowns.

They are here strictly for show, not tell. None of them will say a word all evening, save an introductory mention of their names and where they come from at the outset of the show. I'm surprised the judges don't check their teeth on the way past. I feel like I should be bidding on one of them later.

SATURDAY, JAN. 24

My hangover and I elect to sleep through the afternoon press conference with "star of film and television" Alan Thicke, chiefly because I don't want to give Alan Thicke the satisfaction of holding court before a scrum of reporters.

It's "Family Day" for the Miss Universe Canada contestants — sorry, delegates — who've been under lock and key and the watchful eyes of their own, personal chaperones for the past week. A security desk greets the elevators when they arrive at the lodge-like hotel's fourth floor, the staging ground from which the women have been whisked via bus to various public events, fashion shows, photo shoots and one mass appearance on The Mike Bullard Show during the days leading up to the pageant.

"The chaperone has to, like, walk us to the bathroom and stand outside the door," explains Venessa Fisher, a diminutive 18-year-old blonde from Waterdown, Ont. "If you step outside your door, there's a security guard at either end of the hall. No men allowed. Not even the director."

Today, however, the girls' families are allowed into the auditorium to watch the afternoon rehearsal for Sunday's big finale. One delegate from Scarborough has 53 people coming down. After this, the pageant judges spend the rest of the day conducting private interviews with the delegates.

I don't want to spoil Sunday's surprises, so I drive through the First Nations community of Rama vainly searching for cheap cigarettes and then elect to spend the balance of the day drinking, roaming the casino — as the organizers no doubt intended when they scheduled the pageant over an entire weekend — in hopes of perhaps finding Thicke slumped over a baccarat table and taking constant, suicidal advantage of the facility's liberal smoking policy.

I'm not much of a gambler, unfortunately, so my gaming experience is limited to disconsolately feeding $5 bills into slots emblazoned with names like Little Green Men, Rich Girl and Money to Burn (most apt, that; "Funnel of Money" would be even more appropriate) every now and then, quickly pissing away my credits and making a hasty retreat to my suite whenever I catch myself mentally developing a "strategy" for beating the chattering machines.

I love the sound of the casino, though. Above the constant, urgent hum of the gamblers huddled around roulette wheels and blackjack tables, there's a beautiful, chiming quality to the racket of the slots that sounds like something out of a Steve Reich composition. I keep returning to the middle of the room to soak it up for minutes on end. It never lets up. Nor, for that matter, does the crowd.

"Does it ever get quiet in here?" my girlfriend asks a security guard.

"This is quiet," he laughs. "You should see it in the summer. But this'll start to thin out around seven or eight in the morning."

This must, of course, be verified first-hand. The rest of the night is thus spent between the gaming floor, Casino Rama's various bars and restaurants and, when the booze stops flowing downstairs, beer runs to the hotel room. By the time 7 a.m. rolls around, I am sufficiently inebriated to have scrawled "HI ROLLA" across my knuckles (my girlfriend, whom at this point I have begun referring to as "my attorney," wisely counsels against markering the slogan across my chest) and manage in record time to empty a $25 bucket of tokens into several nickel slots I can barely see.

The gamblers are slightly fewer in number, but there's still an astonishing number of people — middle-aged couples and seniors, mostly — feeding money into the institution. Alan Thicke, unfortunately, is not to be found. On the way back to the room, I realize the guys I apologize to for staggering and slurring in the elevator are, in fact, delivering the Sunday Star.

SUNDAY, JAN. 25

"I'm nervous, I'm sweating and I'm asking myself `Why am I here?'"

So says Natalie Glebova, actually a picture of serenity amid the mounting backstage hubbub just two hours before Miss Universe Canada 2004's grand finale is set to begin. I've asked her and Venessa Fisher why on earth they would choose to submit themselves to the procedural rigour, public display and judgmental nitpicking of pageant life.

Glebova, a pretty 22-year-old from Toronto with whom I quickly fall in love, says she entered the pageant for "confidence," a theme echoed by many of the delegates milling about in various stages of hair and makeup preparation in the casino's rabbit warren of back rooms.

"It's a good chance to meet people who are interested in the same things as you and, of course, to be noticed and to gain exposure," offers Fisher. "It depends on what kind of field you want to go into. I'm sure we'd all love to try acting or modelling, and this sort of gets you into those things."

The expected backbiting and *****ery never materializes, despite the undercurrent of tension backstage. There's the occasional icy glance directed at delegates primping and preening a little too enthusiastically for the various news cameras floating around, but mostly the girls have nothing but sweet things to say about one another. Several actually apologize for being unable to provide any juicy gossip.

"My experience has been great," says Vancouverite Jordann Nettles, 22, a student at Simon Fraser University. "I've never been in a pageant before, so I didn't know what to expect, but the girls are all really nice. Really intelligent and articulate. There's a stereotype out there that says beauty queens are bimbos, but we have to work really hard, volunteering, talking in public. It's a political job almost.

"I want to be a lawyer, so it's a good way to make connections. You can really make a difference if you control the position properly. It's a good opportunity, so why not go for it?"

By the time the big show rolls around, the enthusiasm, sincerity and general affability of the delegates I've met has rubbed off a bit. As the girls, clad in the same filmy, white ensembles from Friday night — and looking generally pretty WASPy-white and blonde, it should be noted — spill out onto the stage for another awkward opening "dance" number, I find myself quietly rooting for some of the contestants with whom I've spoken. Indeed, Alan Thicke keeps urging the crowd to pick "your favourites" and show support for them throughout the night, a request the overexcited gay man in front of me loudly obliges for the duration of the evening. "Natalie's `on' tonight," he assures me between hoots.

Tonight's production follows essentially the same theme as Friday's, except after the introductions the initial field of 50 potential Miss Universe Canadas is pared down by the judges to 15 for the swimwear competition (although the entire crew does a bikini-clad walk-through along the way) and 10 for the eveningwear. A final five is then selected to answer a "skill-testing" question before Canada's next envoy to the international pageant circuit is crowned by her predecessor, Leanne Marie Cecile.

There's also a surprise visit from the reigning Miss Universe, Amelia Vega, a 19-year-old student from the Dominican Republic who's already learned that, to curry favour with the locals, one must express affection for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Along the way, cherubic Herman's Hermit Peter Noone breezes in to perform "I'm Into Something Good" and "There's A Kind Of Hush All Over The World" to chintzy backing tapes. He also reminisces about the '60s and performs a brief, stilted Abbott and Costello routine with Thicke. Apparently, they're neighbours in Pasadena or something. Thicke also makes references to Growing Pains and "the jingles I've written" throughout the evening to remind us why he gets to be on stage with all the girls.

The final selection process is dragged out with all the maddening fanfare of a Survivor season-ender, but eventually there are just five young women left: Fisher, Glebova, Olivia Gurun of Windsor, Monica Rajchel of Calgary and Meighen Miller of London. The closely guarded secret question turns out to be "What do you think the role of Miss Universe Canada should be, and why?" This prompts predictable answers about being a good role model to youth and representing Canada to the world, although Gurun blows it spectacularly by talking incoherently about gowns and manicures.

In the end, there could be only one: Venessa Fisher. "I wasn't expecting to win at all," she said afterwards, shaking like a leaf before a roomful of reporters. "I wasn't expecting to get into the top 10 or the top 15. It's a bit of a shock. I'm still in shock, actually.

"The girl beside me, I figured it would be her.... I just kept looking at my family."

The spoils of the 18-year-old's victory include heaps of jewellery and clothing and a penthouse condo in downtown Toronto leading up to her trip to Quito, not to mention instant minor-celebrity status.

Granted, she had to submit to a strict code of female conduct and appearance that hasn't changed much since the Miss Universe contest first began in 1952, but the rewards are obvious. And life as a beauty queen is still much more tasteful than life as, say, Britney Spears.

Rumors from the Indian front. These posts was taken from a reliable source in the Miss India Message Board, so you can say that there's a probability that these things can happen. But we have to wait and see.

*The official date for the pageant is supposed to be March 27th, as given to the event management group, but this is not absolutely official. It could move into early April or later.

*It took several weeks before Femina could land Pond's and V.L.C.C. as its new sponsors from when Sunsilk exited. Femina's late schedule is due to the fact that they did not want to initiate the process without a sponsor.

*Here is an interesting tidbit: Femina has been contacting most of the contestants from the past few years (Those who they want to see back a second time), and have offered them this incentive: They can skip straight through to the final list of contestants (As I understand it), but I am not sure they can forego the training period, but it will certainly save time for some of these girls.

*On that note, expect more than 2-3 former contestants returning. I'm really not sure how many entries Femina expects in a 3-week span.

*Shonal Rawat absolutely is not competing again, BUT there is gossip circulating. If Femina has to delay the pageant enough, she could be sent to Miss Universe 2004. As you all know, Parmita was 'replaced' last year, because of Femina's love for Shonal. In fact, she was their preferred rep. to Miss Universe last year. We'll see what becomes of this, but I don't foresee the pageant delaying much, if at all.

I am posting this here since it is gossip and not official news. Please do not go on other boards claiming Shonal is going to Miss Universe or something. This is just some gossip circulating.

Brazilian couturier Alexandre Dutra will be in charge of Telma's evening gown for the Miss Universe 2004 Presentation Show. Dutra is the same designer who does gowns for Miss Brasil titleholders.

Her other gowns and dresses will be taken care of by other Brazilian designers namely Roberta Miranda, Roberto Carlos and Alexander Pires.

Telma will be in Rio for 15 days, afterwhich she will return to Luanda.

In August 2003, 18-year-old Amelia Vega from the Dominican Republic, Miss Universe 2003, paid a visit to Beijing. "I got to know China when I studied history in my childhood," she told reporters on her arrival. "I feel happy and proud that I have a chance to visit the country."

What Vega desired the most was to visit the Palace Museum and the Summer Palace. She was curious about those magnificent ancient buildings during her visit to the Palace Museum. On a breezy day, she came to the Summer Palace. There, she boated on the lake while enjoying landscapes with an antique touch along the banks.

As a lover of Chinese food, Vega did not waste the opportunity to visit the renowned Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant. She showed great interest in roast duck cooking techniques. She consulted chefs in the restaurant, and recorded the process with a camera.

But the beauty queen had not come to China solely for fun. Vega's main mission here was to promote the prevention and treatment of AIDS.

"For five years," Vega said, "Miss Universe has been engaged in the welfare of people infected with HIV/AIDS. I am pleased to participate in the work of helping HIV/AIDS patients." Hearing that so many people had applied themselves to caring about HIV/AIDS patients in China, Vega was deeply moved. She said she would fulfill her duty as Miss Universe to help more HIV/AIDS patients and present them her most sincere blessing.

This common goal put Vega together with Pu Cunxi, the image ambassador of China's Campaign to Prevent AIDS, and Fu Yan, a charge nurse from the Beijing You'an Hospital. As a way to welcome her, Pu gave Vega a red ribbon, the symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness, and Fu presented her a pair of cloth tigers. Fu told Vega the gifts were handmade by two AIDS patients to welcome her to China, which was their way to show their gratitude. In return, Vega personally gave them autographed photographs of herself and said she hoped they would continue to live happily.

Donald Trump, however, thinks Hilton could be a pageant host, and is negotiating with her to host the Miss USA Pageant, which he owns.

Trump told Us Weekly magazine he got the idea while Hilton's parents, Kathy and Rick, were visiting him at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla. And he said Hilton's infamous Internet sex tape doesn't bother him.

"I've known Paris since she was a little girl," Trump said. "She's a fine girl ... I think she will give the pageant its highest TV ratings."
