Question about Miss Polonia.
When is this pageant usually happen? Where will the winner compete? How about the runners-up? I heard there is still no official word on who will be the Miss U representative this year. how will it be chosen?
Thanks
JENSIE_G
Jan 11, 2004, 12:41 AM
Musique: The Miss Polonia pageant is usually held during September. It selects the official Polish representatives for all major pageants.
Winner automatically goes to Miss World. The 1st RU proceeds to Miss Universe.
However, the actual winner was sent to Miss Universe 2002. There are isolated cases like that.
Ang pagkakaalam ko, the 1st RU (Paulina Panek) is going to Ecuador. We should wait for official confirmation then.

AMERICAN BEAUTY
In one of her final acts as Miss USA, Susie Castillo
gives a salute to all of you men in uniform:
By Mac Montandon
It’s almost not fair. Twenty-four-year-old Miss USA, Susie Castillo, is so beautiful, brainy, and sweet there’s barely anything left for the rest of us poor schlubs. But that’s OK — we can always just bask in her seemingly endless glory. (Basking is actually one of our few strong suits.)
Over the past year, Susie — who is half Dominican, half Puerto Rican but 100 percent luscious Latina — has given everything she’s got to touring with the USO. She’s visited 11 different bases and camps on two continents, from Colorado’s Fort Carson to Pennsylvania’s Willow Grove Naval Air Station to the Westover Air Reserve Base in her home state of Massachusetts.
Later this year, Susie will pass her crown to Miss USA 2004 and embark on her next challenge — conquering Hollywood. After seeing her in DRILL, we think you’ll know what we mean when we say, “We love a woman in uniform!”
After 47 years without one Miss USA coming from Massachusetts, you are the second since 1998. That begs the question: Is Massachusetts getting hotter?
(Laughs.) Of course it is. Absolutely. But it’s still tough, because you have states like Texas, where girls are bred to do pageants. It’s crazy, but you have to compete with that.
During your reign, you get to share a Manhattan pad with Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe, who beat you out for her title. How’s that been?
It’s wonderful. New York can be a scary place for someone who’s never been here before, like myself, so to come and see a familiar face and be able to talk to Miss Universe, who had already gone through the experience, really helped.
But do you ever want to slip a Mickey in Miss Universe’s cereal?
(Laughs.) No. It’s funny, because when we first saw each other, we said, “Hey, hermana!” which means “sister.” She’s Dominican and I’m Dominican, so it’s kind of fun, like sisters.
So what was your favorite and least favorite part of competing in Miss USA?
I think my favorite part is meeting so many wonderful women from across the country and making friends with them. My least favorite part is probably wearing heels and makeup every single day. That is excruciating. Right after I won, my left foot swelled up and I had tendonitis. I think I have to murder the person who invented heels.
Your left foot? We love that movie! You’ve visited a bunch of bases with the USO. Tell us about your experiences with the troops.
Well, my view of the U.S. military is totally different now than it used to be. Before, all I knew was what the news would tell me — that they fight for our freedom and it’s a patriotic duty and all that stuff. But working with the USO, I’ve gotten the chance to eat lunch in the mess hall and gotten a chance to kind of experience what they do. I mean, not going to war, but the other aspects. And it’s been totally humbling. First of all, they are so much younger than I realized — I mean, they are younger than me! These are 19- and 20-year-old people overseas, fighting for our freedom and for what we want to do. Many of them are overseas for three years before they can go home. I went to college 40 minutes away, because I couldn’t be away from my mom! But they can’t do that; they can’t go home. It’s hard to imagine. It’s pretty incredible, really.
To read more about what Miss USA, Susie Castillo, thinks about life on the bases, inflatable churches, and the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, pick up this month’s molten-lava-hot copy of DRILL Magazine.

Business beauty goes for the crown
Ryerson ITM student Natalie Glebova is one of 50 women competing to become Miss Universe Canada. Katia Livshiz talks to her about the pressures, perceptions and preparation that come with competing for the crown.
By: Katia Livshiz
January.13.2004
http://www.theeyeopener.com/images/bin/MissUnivHor.jpg
Natalie Glebova never dreamed of becoming a beauty queen.
Growing up in her native Russia, the fourth-year ITM student was too busy playing piano, practicing gymnastics and getting ready for a career modelling in magazines and catalogues.
When she saw the Miss Universe pageant on television last year, she thought why not?' Even though she had no previous pageant experience, she filled out an online entry form. That's how it began.
"I always believe we should take ourselves out of our comfort zones to experience new things," she says. "By doing that, we learn a lot about ourselves and you'll thank yourself later because you'll learn so much more."
Now, the 22-year-old will be competing for the title of Miss Universe Canada.
Her online application led to her being named a contestant in the regional GTA and Central Ontario search for Miss Universe Canada.
Out of the 24 hopefuls, Glebova and 11 other contestants were chosen to go on to the final Miss Universe Canada pageant, which will be held at CasinoRama on January 25.
If she wins, she'll be representing Canada in the Miss Universe 2004 pageant. However, she says that winning isn't even on her mind ... yet.
"When I was at the regional competition I forgot about winning. The whole night I was just focusing on having fun," Glebova says. "I had the best time of my life and did the best I could."
Her best was good enough to make the finals. She'll find out January 25 if it will be good enough to give her a shot at Miss Universe 2004.
The girls are pumped, Glebova says, but all of them are battling nerves.
The pressure can get to some of them, she adds, recalling a contestant backstage at the regional pageant who was nervous before the show and nearly flamed out in spectacular fashion.
"One girl managed to set her hair on fire. Before we knew it, the fire alarms were going off, we were rushed outside, so was the audience, into the freezing cold," she says. "[The fire department] told us that one of the girls had put oil in her hair and I guess the crimping iron made it start to smoke. But she was okay. She managed to get on stage that night, and she'd gotten her hair fixed so you wouldn't know it had just been smoking."
Glebova also admits to sometimes getting nervous on stage and before the show, though not to such an incendiary degree.
"I'm sure you can imagine that being on stage in a swimsuit in front of the judges and an audience is very nerve-wracking," she says, though she adds that she understands it's an important part of the competition.
"Physical beauty is a big aspect, I'm not going to lie. But a swimsuit competition promotes poise and body health. They want Miss Canada to be someone who's fit and healthy."
Glebova emigrated to Canada nine years ago from her native Tuapse, a small beach town in south-western Russia. After learning the skills in Russia, she has since won several regional gymnastics competitions, which she regards as a good experience for her life today.
"Being involved in sports at such a young age pushes me now and keeps me active," she says. To keep fit she rollerblades, swims and does aerobics.
Currently, Glebova works as an office manager, which gives her the opportunity to apply her ITM knowledge and demonstrate that beauty queens are about more than bikinis, breasts and booty.
Nonetheless, she is also well-aware that not everyone sees beauty queens that way. While Glebova says her family is very excited about her participation in the contest, she has received mixed reactions from her friends.
"Some people think pageants are outdated and demeaning. I can't help people for thinking that, but I've met many of the girls (contestants) and they're not only beautiful but also intelligent."
She can certainly say that about the current Miss Universe Canada, Leanne Cecile, who has several university degrees and is now working on a Ph.D. in Pharmacy. Cecile emceed the regional pageant in which Glebova participated and she thinks of her as a very down-to-earth person, not a Barbie.
When Glebova arrives at the hotel at CasinoRama on January 17, she says she is looking forward to being assigned a roommate whom she has never met before, and she expects to have a great time, once again. Throughout the week, the contestants will be rehearsing for the final night and touring Toronto.
"I don't even realize yet how big this will be. For me, it's almost like going to Miss Universe, because the show will be in a huge theatre with a large audience," Glebova says.
To get ready, she has been exercising with a personal trainer and working on her hair and outfits for the pageant.
"Before the pageant even begins there's a lot of work involved. Every girl needs a gown, hair colour, hairstyle, a lot of workouts, eating right," she explains. "There's months of preparation involved."
But despite the mishaps that result from nervous situations backstage and the competitive environment of some pageants, Glebova is calm and believes she will be ready.
"I have a lot of things to prepare, but I think I'm going to be ready at the end of this," she says.

Marietta Chrousala, Miss Universe 2003 semi-finalist, wears the outfit that runners taking part in the Athens Olympics torch relay will wear. The flame will be lit in Olympia on March 25 and will be carried through all 54 prefectures of Greece. It will then travel to 33 cities in 27 countries on five continents before returning to Greece for the start of the Games on August 13. MORE THAN A BEAUTY PAGEANT
FAREWELL LEANNE CECILE
http://www.canoe.ca/Lifewise2Beauty0401/mucevening.jpg
On Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, a new Miss Universe Canada will be crowned. And the judges are looking for more than just a pretty face, according to last year's winner.
"Physical beauty is undoubtedly a factor in any pageant. Views of physical beauty vary from country to country. However, here in Canada, it is often the characteristics above and beyond physical features that will set a winner apart from other delegates. Elements such as poise, composure, and confidence often enhance the stage presence of a pageant contestant. Interview Scores also play a factor in who will win a pageant, meaning that judges will often choose a well-spoken woman who they know will be well represented as a titleholder," says 26 year-old Leanne Marie Cecile, Miss Universe Canada 2003.
Leanne is a third-year Doctor of Pharmacy student with Bachelor degrees in both science and education, she hopes to launch a diabetes care clinic in the future.
"Winning the title of Miss Universe Canada was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I can remember standing on stage as a top five finalist, under the hot spotlights and in front of hundreds of cheering onlooks, waiting for the announcement of the winners. As the winners were being revealed, I was getting more anxious about my final standing. My name had yet to be announced until the results finally came down to the last two delegates; at that point I knew that in the matter of seconds my life could change drastically. And in the blind of an eye, my name had been announced as the winner."
Since then Leanne has had an busy year. She represented Canada in the Miss Universe 2003 Pageant in Panama City, Panama where she placed 6th out of 73 delegates.
"One of the most memorable moments from this year is standing on stage at the Miss Universe 2003 Pageant, among 72 other delegates from around the world, in front of a live audience of thousands of people. Millions of people were tuning in from around the globe, and I realized that this moment was once in a lifetime."

I was able to watch the MTV Fashionista Model Search for 2003 just a few hours ago on TV. Though the females models were quite stunning indeed, but they lack spark, stage presence and umph, they were just plain stiff. A far cry from the Miss U girls we often discuss in this thread who have given a new meaning to the term "vavavoom" special mention Evelina, Eva Ekvall, Oxana, and even plain to many Miss Israel 2001 Ilanet Levi, albeit a plain gown bu carried it so well.
Even our female models have a long way to go, just looking at the dry stage presence gives you an impression that they're not really that comfortable with their femininity.
One of the stunners that night, Olivia Daytia, but all of them were just too plain in terms of stage presence. It's quite understandable that you can't show emotions (smiling, etc) while running down the runway, it's because it's in the body language of person you'll see the projection of their emotions, but none that night.

Taken from Miss Universe Critic, the webmaster Raphael Delfin was able to interview Miss Universe President Paula Shuggart for the second time. Here is the full interview:
http://www.facepics.com/profiles/images/missdeutschland2/missdeutschland2_image1.jpg
Interesting piece I must say:
ON FRANCHISE FEES
RRD:There were two cases of countries where MUO helped out to ensure their participation, like in the cases of New Zealand and Venezuela this year. Considering there are titleholders from other countries that seemed to hold contests specifically to send representatives to Miss Universe like Madagascar and Northern Marianas, why wasn't there any effort extended to have them on board this year? It seems that MUO is limiting the number of countries that can participate and are turning away nations that want and can afford a franchise to compete. A number of pageant organizers from around the world that say that the MUO is refusing participation because of time limitations, but that is ludicrous because in 1995, 82 contestants participated in the 2-hour block.
PS: Venezuela was a situation that involved many entities including the Government of Panama and had very extenuating circumstances. I am unaware of any requests from New Zealand. A two-hour telecast does cause some constraints in being able to feature the delegates. Ideally we like to have anywhere from 75 - 85 delegates in the program to give each delegate as much time as possible.
RRD: What is your opinion about allowing franchisees to handpick their delegates instead of holding an actual pageant?
PS: Holding a preliminary pageant is part of the Miss Universe rules and regulations and not something to be taken lightly. To have won the right to represent your country is a very big honor and it's important to have an impartial jury. It's hard to regulate all franchisees at all times but we make a point to do everything we can to ensure a fair and impartial pageant took place.
RRD: The Philippine franchise for MU will end in 2004. Rumor has it that Stella Araneta, the franchise owner, had bargained the franchise fee in 1994 which is good for 10 years, which means that the contract will expire in 2004. Many Filipino pageant fans who are disenchanted that their representatives have not fared well consistently, believe that the time has come for someone else to take over the Philippine franchise. These fans have written to me and pleaded that MUO do not renew its contract with Araneta's group; instead, MUO should consider selling its Philippine franchise to another Philippine pageant organization or beauty team who might have a better knack of finding the right Philippine representatives to Miss Universe and other international pageants. The question is, "Will MUO sell its Philippine franchise to someone else? Why or why not?"
PS: It sounds like there are a lot of rumors flying out there; completely unfounded! At this time there has been no discussion about changing the franchise.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON PRESTIGE VERSUS POPULARITY
RRD: There is a perception that a pageant that attracts the most number of countries is considered the more "prestigious" and "popular" pageant. What is your opinion about this perception?
PS: Well I think this dove-tails in perfectly with the previous question. I strongly disagree that the most prestigious pageant is the one with the most delegates.
It is very well known and generally accepted that some delegates, including the representative of the United States, did not participate in a preliminary pageant before attending Miss World. I think Kim Harlan is absolutely beautiful and certainly qualified but I think the last competition in which she competed was Miss Teen USA. I think to receive a phone call saying "Congratulations, you're going to China" definitely takes away from the status and credibility of the event. It was a similar situation last year.
I think the prestige really lies with the scope of the broadcast: the countries in which it airs and the production values of the pageant itself. I'm very proud of our production. The Miss Universe telecast is the most distributed event of its kind around the world and the production values are second to none.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON TOP 15
RRD: Could the "Top 15" system remain in place in subsequent years?
PS: Well, it is our intent to keep it in place. NBC really wanted to give an opportunity to more delegates and I think it works well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON RATINGS
RRD: What is more important to the Miss Universe organization - U.S. Nielsen ratings, or global ratings (even though it's hard to get this data)?
PS: Obviously the Nielsens are the only ratings we're able to obtain and they are very important. However, this year with NBC, we have made a concerted effort to push for the best possible broadcasters internationally. We've been very successful and I'm excited about that fact because our first year with our new distributor was incredibly positive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON AMELIA VEGA
RRD: How is Amelia Vega handling her new job? Are you happy with her? Which other countries is she scheduled to visit?
PS: Amelia is doing very well and is extremely busy. She has an incredible amount of energy and stamina. Although I must admit I don't like standing next to her because she's so tall (as you recall, I'm 5'2")!
She will be heading to Guyana, Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam and Cambodia all before Christmas.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON TALLER CANDIDATES
RRD: It seems that in the last few years, taller candidates have been preferred over the shorter ones. Why is this?
PS: This is appropriate given my answer above. Well, height certainly isn't a requirement but I think sometimes it might be easier for a taller woman to have a commanding presence. That's only speculation on my part but as I just mentioned, I know what it's like to be a woman of shorter stature standing next to a tall woman. That said, there have been titleholders of all height.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON CHINA
RRD: It has been reported that you visited China to try to convince the Chinese government to hold the pageant there in 2005. Did you succeed in convincing them?
PS: I've been to China three times. We have the support in China but I want to make sure we have obtained all proper permits before we proceed. Everything looks very good but we have not made a decision on 2005 yet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON THE MIKIMOTO CROWN
RRD: Why and who decided to change the Miss Universe crown? Many fans think that the old crown was far more beautiful than the new Mikimoto crown. The old crown was more recognizable, and the size and its design with the three loops and the woman's figure inside the loops were more suitable for the world's highest beauty title. Is there any chance of bringing the old crown back?
PS: The crown! I receive many letters about the crown. This was something decided many years ago with an eye to having a new crown for the 50th anniversary and I honestly don't know who was the first driving force behind it. As it turned out, the crown was not ready until the 51st show, but at the time, I was told by many previous titleholders that they didn't really like the old crown (one even told me they called it "the Chandelier") and they liked the idea of having one with real jewels instead of rhinestones. There was some discussion of auctioning off the new crown on behalf of an HIV/Aids charity after five years but even if that happens I don't think we would go back to the old design. Perhaps Mikimoto could do five or six different designs and the public could vote on the one they thought best represented Miss Universe. What do you think of that?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON MISS WORLD
RRD: The March 2003 issue of Vanity Fair mentioned that Donald Trump wanted to buy out the Miss World Organization and that Julia Morley refused his offer. Is this true?
PS: No. I believe in the article Mr. Trump was referring to the tragedy in Nigeria and he said he wouldn't even consider buying the franchise. I'd have to reread it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON SELECTING JUDGES
RRD: How does MUO select the panel of judges for the preliminaries and for the final competition? How does one become a judge?
PS: We work with NBC, Mr. Trump, our PR department and our judge coordinator. On the preliminary panel we like to have a cross section of people, from businessmen/women, to media members and I now like to have a previous titleholder as well. Sometimes it is difficult to convince a Titleholder because it is not as glamorous as the telecast panel even though it is probably more important. I like having a previous titleholder on the prelim panel because she can really help the other judges understand what it takes to wear the crown. Wendy Fitzwilliam was on the preliminary panel in Panama and she was just amazing. Lu Parker really helped in San Antonio as well. I also like putting one person on the panel who was previously unaware of what pageants are about. It's great because inevitably they leave as big fans of the delegates and the system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ON VIDEOS
RRD: Will MUO ever sell a DVD format of past Miss Universe/USA/Teen USA telecasts? Many fans would love to start their own DVD collection.
PS: We are actually discussing this right now. We've also found some other interesting footage in our archives as well which might be fun to distribute. We'd like to package it but we have to get all of the guilds (Director's Guild, Writer's Guild, AFM) to sign off on selling them. Right now, anyone who sells the tapes and DVD's is doing so illegally and could easily be prosecuted.
QUESTIONS SUBMITTED BY PAGEANT FANS
Bring back the intros in national costume, like the one in 2002. It didn't quite work to have them in floral beachwear, and please relegate the costume part to a brief 5-minute dance sequence.
PS: As of this interview we are planning on having National Costume in the show opening.
Please stop calling the delegates by their countries only. It is so impersonal. Bring back "Miss" before the name of the country.
PS: I am asked this all the time, I would love to but unfortunately a couple of countries have registered the "Miss (COUNTRY NAME)" and threatened a lawsuit if we used it. I believe we did say Miss this year after the top 15 were named because the countries in question were not a part of it. Hopefully we'll be able to rectify this situation eventually.
I have also been asked many times about "Miss" for the USA system. We cannot use "Miss" with the state name unless we say "USA" afterward. I do not see that changing. I did call NBC about "Average Joe" recently because in the second week they said Melana was a former "Miss Missouri". I said. "Wait a minute! I want to make sure everyone knows she was a Miss Missouri USA." I think they changed it. I hope they did.
Regarding the Miss Photogenic award, it has become more of a "popularity" award instead of a genuine "photogenic" award. A system done in 1998 could be a good compromise: Have the public choose the 10 most popular, and then from there, the press photographers would choose their photogenic choice. Or, maybe they should have separate awards for "Internet popularity" and "Photogenic". "Photogenic" should strictly come from votes from the accredited members of the media.
PS: That's an interesting suggestion. I think by limiting everyone to one vote helps and I do like having the Internet participation.

I'm really confused with the Miss Ukraine pageant. Its winner automatically goes to Miss World. And their Miss Universe bet is left to be chosen among the runners-up. However, I have read a number of articles last year stating that a new franchise has been allocated for Miss Universe exclusively. We'll have to wait and see. I'll ask around from my network.

Legal battle over use of Miss Ireland name
By Eamon Quinn, Business Editor
The world of international beauty pageants is set for a battle in the High Court next week over the right to use the Miss Ireland business name.
The legal dispute features a former Miss Ireland and the owner of a leading model agency in opposition to an ex-holder of the Irish franchise, who is now linked to the rival Miss Universe competition.
Miss World, the London organisation run by Julia Morley, and co-plaintiffs Andrea Roche and Mags Humphries, who now run the Miss Ireland competition, are seeking to prevent Miss Ireland Beauty Pageant Limited and director Kieran Murray from using the Miss Ireland name.
Limerick-based Murray and his Miss Ireland Beauty Pageant firm owned the Miss Ireland competition for several years. In 2003 it passed to Roche ± a former Miss Ireland ± and entrepreneur Humphries, who owns the Assets Model Agency.
Humphries and Roche crowned their debut year after reigning Miss Ireland, Rosanna Davison, won the Miss World competition in China last month.
The Miss Ireland competition was sponsored last year by Newbridge Jewellery and has attracted a flood of offers from more corporate sponsors this year, according to Humphries.
Meanwhile, Murray has become aligned with the Miss Universe organisation, the big rival international beauty competition.
It is run from New York and owned by billionaire Donald Trump and the TV network NBC.
Murray's Miss Ireland Beauty Pageant company also sends contestants to compete in the Miss Europe and Miss International competitions.
Beauty pageants have become big business. Davison travelled to China with a wardrobe of 40 dresses, compared with the single formal dress worn by Roche when she competed for the Miss World crown.
The Dublin hearing has been set for today.

Miss CNMI Universe 2003 Kimberly Nicole Reyes Castro was refused entry into the Miss Universe 2003 pageant due to an "alleged miscommunication"... Read about it here...
http://saipantribune.com/imgupload/lg/iss1263ns28777.jpg
Miss Universe drops NMI
Miscommunication forced CNMI's bet out of pageant
The Northern Marianas Beauty Pageant Association will not be able to send its representative to the prestigious Miss Universe competition this month after a miscommunication fiasco that forced the international pageant association to drop the CNMI from its roster.
Instead, reigning Miss CNMI Universe Kimberly Reyes will be joining two other beauty pageants this year-Miss Earth in October and Miss World in December-to make up for the Miss Universe mess.
NMBPA national director Jonas Barcinas disclosed that Reyes, who is supposed to represent the Northern Marianas to the Miss Universe tilt set tomorrow in Panama City, would represent the CNMI to the Miss Earth and Miss World contests because of some miscommunication problems the NMBPA has had with the Miss Universe organizers.
According to Barcinas, the organizers had sent the Miss Universe contest package to a wrong address, resulting in the package being returned to them. The NMBPA tried to negotiate for Reyes' entry but the organizers refused, he added.
"They sent the package to Gerard Salas' old address and the people who got it returned it blank. So we did not get the chance to fill up the package and they would not allow us to enter now," explained the national director.
After brief negotiations, the NMBPA and Reyes agreed that she would instead represent the CNMI to the next two international beauty pageants and let go of her chance to be at the Miss Universe slated today, June 3, in Panama City.
Barcinas lamented, however, that other contestants who had the same problem were admitted to the Miss Universe beauty pageant for unexplained reasons but they refused to accord the same to the CNMI.
In a separate interview with the 18-year-old reigning Miss CNMI, Reyes admitted being initially frustrated with the problem but later realized that "bad things can result in good things."
"I would be joining Miss Earth in October in the Philippines and that would give me a feel for the international competition. It would prepare me once the Miss World contest is held in December in London," said Reyes.
She explained that she had all her dresses ready for the Miss Universe contest until she was notified that there was a problem with her entry. "At first I was disappointed because I was looking forward to it," she added.
Reyes is looking forward to the competition since she would be representing the CNMI for the first time in the two international beauty contests.

Special Miss USA Fear Factor Scheduled as Lead-in to Miss USA 2004
NEW YORK, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Paula M. Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization announced today that, for the first-time-ever, the 53rd annual MISS USA pageant will be broadcast live from the legendary Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on April 12, 2004, on the NBC Television Network. The competition will be nationally televised at 9 pm ET/ delayed PT, following a special episode of Fear Factor featuring six beautiful, yet top secret, Miss USA delegates. The Miss USA Fear Factor combo, which dominated in the 2003 ratings, will air for a second consecutive year.

"Typically this time of year, the Kodak is playing host to the Oscars, but with so many television scheduling changes, we were able to slip into the opening," said Shugart. "This year's pageant will be an elegant primetime event featuring the most beautiful young women in the country competing from the most glamorous location in Hollywood."
In its first full year with NBC, the Miss Universe Organization, which is a joint venture between NBC and Donald J. Trump, has seen unprecedented growth in ratings, sponsorship, and progress for the future. In March, NBC's telecast of "Miss USA 2003" showed a 57 percent increase in adult viewers 18-49 (the highest for the pageant in five years), an increase of 147 percent among teen viewers, and 50 percent in total viewers over last year's event airing on CBS. The event finished a close second in its time slot winning adults 18-49, teens, and men and women 18-34 and helping NBC to win ratings overall for the night.
The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the MISS UNIVERSE®, MISS USA® and MISS TEEN USA®Pageants, is a Donald J. Trump and National Broadcasting Company, Inc. (NBC) partnership. Utilizing its nationwide grass roots infrastructure, the Miss Universe Organization is committed to increasing awareness of breast and ovarian cancers. By forging relationships with organizations committed to research and education, such as the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Gilda's Club and the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations, Miss USA is armed to impact women today.

The queen’s next move
By Michael David C. Tan
JUST because she’s now the happy wife of an Italian businessman, that doesn’t mean she’s poised to give up everything’s she’s worked for here in the Philippines. Miriam Quiambao, or Mrs. Claudio Rondinelli is set to live in Hong Kong but nothing’s final yet with her career.
Miriam Quiambao
http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2004/jan/23/yehey/images/enter.jpg
She’s noncommittal when it comes to discussing her career but her manager assures she’ll be commuting to Manila regularly to fulfill her career obligations.
Miriam’s attitude toward her life is perhaps best explained by the route she took to the top. It all began when she tripped on that stage. Before making it to the top three, Miss Philippines Miriam Quiambao lost her footing during the Miss Universe 1999 prepageant night at the Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. Gracefully picking herself up, she was said to have later stated: “I believe that I have stood up for the rest of the women who have fallen whether on or off the stage. I believe that through this example of mine I have shown courage and strength of being a woman, of being who I am—and I hope to be a good example to the rest of the women in the world. “
What could have been humiliating actually made her a crowd favorite (so that pageant host Ali Landry even commented that to qualify in the semifinals, many girls would slip in the following year’s competition), and helped her win second place. But now, away from the glitz and glamour of one of the world’s most prestigious pageants, Quiambao is more introspective with the experience. “Joining the Miss Universe competition made me realize that there were things about me that had to be changed—concerns on my self-image, on responsibility,” Quiambao said. “But having discovered that, I have improved myself tremendously. I’m more confident when facing life—I have no baggage, so I’m okay even if things don’t turn out the way I expect them to.”
Quiambao’s growth was probably made obvious by her transition from being a physical therapist to a beauty queen, and from TV host to model/actress. Without any background in hosting and broadcasting, she was invited to join the early morning show Unang Hirit, which is on-air daily at 5 a.m. on GMA Channel 7. “My voice was squeal-ish, and I didn’t even know how to host,” Quiambao said. “But things came together, so that in a year I learned everything I can.” She later cohosted Paolo Bediones in the magazine program Extra Extra.
Quiambao also gave acting a try, first playing the female lead role in the sitcom Idol Ko Si Kap alongside former Cavite governor Bong Revilla, and then as the “other woman” in the Richard Gomez and Sharon Cuneta starrer Walang Kapalit. Quiambao was said to have stated that she finds acting a refreshing take from the hosting job although she is still focused with her broadcasting goals. Only recently, Quiambao took over the helm of the infotainment All About You. “This is totally different from what I’ve done, but it’s a welcome challenge,” she said. “It means I can already handle my own show.”
But even before the prominence she enjoys now, learning and then putting into practice what she learned were long associated with the beauty queen. Before the 1999 Miss Universe beauty pageant, she was affiliated with Ang Lingkod ng Panginoon, a Catholic Charismatic Community composed of single professionals.
The merging of everything conservative in religion with the supposed modern woman image projected (to the disagreement of most feminists) by beauty pageants was effectively done by Quiambao, who was also quoted as saying that these events “provide women an environment for growth, discipline and value for work and time by allowing women to widen their horizons as they mature from the experience of travel, independence and interaction with people from different parts of the world. It opens doors for business, politics, education, entertainment and the arts and it gives women a vehicle to be heard and help influence others in supporting the worthy cause of their choice.”
Obviously, Quiambao is the best example of this and she continues to evolve. Her recent marriage to Hong Kong-based Italian businessman Claudio Rondinelli initially raised concerns about her rumored need to move overseas to be closer to him—which, if true, is somewhat ironic, particularly for one who espouses equality between men and women. But the former beauty queen looks at this differently. “I’m not moving out, just moving to a different plane,” Quiambao said, “such as when I gave up Extra Extra because it was not anymore suiting my goal. But that’s not a sacrifice but a choice—choices are more empowering, and I choose to claim my power.”
Her other half, aside from being based overseas, is a frequent traveler, as well, “and he wants me to travel the world with him,” she said, stressing that she intends to. “People are constantly evolving. Life changes, so you have to change.”
While it is true that in the local industry, married celebrities tend to lose fans, Quiambao’s take on the situation is different. “I don’t believe in that,” she said. “Look at Sharon Cuneta, or Vilma Santos, or Nora Aunor. They may not be as busy [as before], but they are still adored as much, or probably even more since their fans grew with them. Attractions have different levels—infatuation, et cetera. And then there’s the level na marami na ang pinagsamahan, kaya mas malalim na ang connection.”
As if an afterthought, she jokingly added, her laughter crisp and contagious: “My fans are happy nga na totoo na that I’ll marry—after two times na naudlot!”
The dream, for now, is to find contentment in the next steps she’s taking in her life: as a wife and as a mother. “A very happy family life,” she said, is what lies for her in the future.
In all reality, her fame is harder to fathom than most media-created celebrities. After all, Quiambao wasn’t even the country’s original representative to the 1999 Miss Universe beauty pageant (she was supposed to join Miss World), so that many didn’t expect much from her until after seeing her swan-like transition (thanks to her prepageant training in Venezuela). For that matter, she didn’t even win the crown in the international beauty pageant.
And yet, Quiambao continues to be much loved by those who know her (or at least follow her career), and respected by those who have heard of her. It isn’t every year, after all, that a candidate a beauty pageant-crazed country like the Philippines sends to international beauty competitions brings home the crown, or at least close to bringing it home. For that, not so surprisingly, she is always a lady whose next moves are always worth paying attention.

Miss USA Visits HH
Miss USA, Susie Castillo, signs a magazine for Sgt. Raoul Bayona. Henderson Hall was the first stop for Castillo on an East and West Coast tour signing DRILL magazine, where she is featured.

Henderson Hall News
Miss USA, Susie Castillo, made her first stop on an East and West Coast tour of military bases at Henderson Hall's Marine Corps Exchange Tuesday.
She was signing copies of the latest issue of DRILL magazine, where she is featured as the cover girl.
Even though this tour is for DRILL magazine, Castillo, from Massachusetts, has been able to visit servicemembers all over the world the past year thanks to a partnership with the United Services Organization.
"It's been a tradition for the past few years. The Miss Universe Organization, which manages my schedule, has a relationship with the USO. So when I came in it was something that had already been happening. But it has been a wonderful experience. There was very little that I knew about our military prior to working with the USO."
Castillo said she is impressed by the huge commitment servicemembers have despite their "low pay."
While her experiences gave her a better understanding of what the military does, she wants others to know too.
"I think it's a shame that they don't teach our young people more about the different branches of the military and what they do and what sacrifices they make."
Castillo enjoyed meeting the Marines at Henderson Hall, and it was obvious the Marines enjoyed meeting her.
"I thought she was real nice, friendly, and pretty," said Lance Cpl. Brian Kyzer. "I never thought I would meet Miss USA. Of all the places she could go, I thought it was great that she could come here."
Castillo will be crowning the new Miss USA April 12.

Eyes on the BIG PRIZE
http://www.trinidadexpress.com/shared/images/2004/01/25/w1.jpg
By Cedriann J Martin
Danielle Jones's postmortem of the pageant night, that made her the newest Miss Trinidad and Tobago for Miss Universe title-holder, makes her sound like one part coy candidate and one part observer-in-awe.
"In the end," recounted the beaming 25-year-old, "I was standing up there with two girls for whom I would have felt comfortable stepping back." The lagniappe that Jones received in the form of prizes for healthy skin, fitness and personal style, she would have willingly dished out to others. In fact, she had already made personal appraisals and assigned the awards to other delegates. She raved about how beautiful her competitors all looked.
"I loved Aqiyla's (Heather Jones) gown," she said. "And that dress Meiling did for Kristy gorgeous."
And as though all that good will and sisterly love weren't enough, Jones almost made her winning responses in the competition's two interview segments sound like luck-of-the-draw.
"I suppose the advantage of being the oldest is that I've had more time to think about these things. Who has shaped and inspired me? What are the events and accomplishments of significance that have occurred within my lifetime? And, of course, it always helps to read."
It also helps to have undergraduate and master degrees in Environmental Studies and Mass Communications respectively under your sash, to have lectured a tertiary-level course in public speaking and to have worked in the field of communications.
When it comes to the realm of pageants, the St James beauty has a few things in her favour. First there is her ability to express sensible ideas competently. Then Jones's thin 5' 9" frame-one that the Elite Model Management agency singled out as being deserving of a modeling contract when she was just 17-years-old-fits her neatly within international standards of beauty. A striking, camera-ready smile does not hurt either.
And between now and the 2004 Miss Universe pageant in Ecuador in June, there's time enough to refine the rest.
"I didn't have the best walk on the night," she decided. "Now instead of having 12 girls, the pageant company will be focussing on one." Apart from getting Jones prepared for the pageant, Miss Trinidad and Tobago is itself a job-one that she must carry out in tandem with her work in health communications.
Jones is optimistic about her ability to balance the two responsibilities, saying that one task could add value to the other now that her responsibility for weaving health-related messages for the public is coupled with what amounts to a life-long platform.
Her primary issues of concern are cancer awareness and HIV/Aids. In fact, Jones is considering a study on Aids and cancer coverage in the region as the topic for her doctorate thesis. Her PhD will have to wait until 2005. Jones knows, though, that even after then, she would remain a public figure. Like the cliché says, her life would never be the same. How has she reconciled herself to the idea?
"My approach to all this is prayer, acceptance and dedication. I wanted to do this and I thought about all the implications before I entered. Faye (Alibocus) had good words for me. She told me to be sure to take some time off for myself in the middle of the madness."
What about time off for love? Is there a significant other? She attempted an evasion: "I'm surrounded by love," she said, smiling. "I'm happy". Oh come on, Danielle. We want more than that!
"Talking about my personal life is tough for me. I guess I'll say that I'm not closing any doors. I'm open to all opportunities."
So what is Miss T&T looking for in a man? That was a question to which she has no problem responding. "I am attracted by ambition and drive. I also like tall men. It must be someone who is understanding and patient. He must be willing to love me for me. You shouldn't just be attracted to a pretty face because there are days I don't feel pretty and days that I don't want to be judged by my looks." Jones said that she feels no anxiety about finding an equal, settling down and having a family.
"I believe it is possible to work toward having it all, but in today's world the definition of 'all' is always in flux. I love kids but the thought of being responsible for someone all the time I need some time. And I have it. There's no rush."
Jones is looking forward to Carnival. She gushed about seeing Machel Montano perform live for the first time in seven years. And she asserted that whether or not she had won a costume to join Sonia Mack's section in Poison, she was hell bent on playing mas this year. The costume, incidentally, was just one item in a prize package with a quarter million dollar value.
"On pageant night, one of the photographers called my name and asked to have a photograph of me by the car. I was like: what car? At that moment I forgot. It's so weird to have your own car after just one night."
Weird and wonderful. And the prizes are not the half of it.
"Now I've gone from being 'the girl in the papers' to being Danielle Jones, Miss Trinidad and Tobago. Yeah, that is me. It feels good to know that you have people that support you in your win. Trinbago, thank you."

Women With A Variety Of Passions
From The Editor
Sunday, January 25th 2004
http://www.trinidadexpress.com/shared/images/2004/01/25/w2.jpg
First there were 12, now there is one.
But our new Miss Trinidad and Tobago/ Universe, Danielle Jones, is not standing alone.
As she makes her way to Ecuador in June to compete in the international Miss Universe Pageant, she has the love and support of some 1.5 million people.
This out-going and brainy beauty who speaks highly of her 11 other competitors, and swears she made solid friendships throughout the six-month period prior to the pageant, has stated that she is a goal-oriented woman open to challenges and changes.
From our observation she is by no means a wilting flower, and like the night of her popular and spectacular win at the Centre of Excellence, Jones continues to bloom.
This week we searched and found more interesting women. Members of the fairer sex who continue to make strides and step into uncharted territories usually dominated by men.
Malika Blair is such a woman. At age 24, she is the youngest Deputy Mayor of the San Fernando City Corporation. Outspoken and forthright, Blair says that it was her desire to help the youths, especially those from her area, that led her into the cutthroat business of politics.
As a youth herself she apparently identifies with the many issues which face young people today. Her position was stepped up a notch last week when she presided as Mayor for Ian Atherley who was away on business.
Another woman whose work is being recognised and heralded is Merle Albino de Coteau, the first woman to arrange a tune for Panorama.
Somehow, many years ago, Albino de Coteau found the impetus to dabble in the then scorned steelband movement and today this music teacher and arranger is reaping the benefits as a well respected professional in the field of steelband music. She will be honoured by the National Women's Action Committee next month, a fitting tribute for a woman who has made music and culture the crux of her life.
Jeanille Bonterre's voice is heard on the nations's airwaves mixing up the music and winning fans with her radio show "The Flow" on Ebony Radio 104. This woman is beautiful, charismatic and media savvy, and not shy about her main goal. "I want to become a force to be reckoned with in media in the region," Bonterre says. Get use to hearing and seeing her. I predict she's going to be around for a long time.
As we present these ladies to you along with informative articles on our sexual health, beauty, finances and much more, we invite you our readers to share your impression of Woman with us.
Write to us.Tell us who and what you would like to see in Woman and we will try our best to accommodate you.

18-year old Venessa Fisher of Ontario will take on the UNIVERSE on June 1st.
http://haltonsearch.com/images/hr/fp/xtq_pictures/20040116-images/25003-9265.jpg
Winning in beauty pageants, they say, is destiny. The crown is not necessarily given to the most brilliant or the most deserving. Rather, it is thrust upon the chosen by a convergence and myriad of circumstances and the needs, often inchoate, of a particular moment in time. So it was for this 18-year old 12th grader of Waterdown, Ontario.
Dreams can come true.
Just a couple of months ago, Venessa in a dire need of sponsor/s (www.haltonsearch.com/hr/ae/story/ 1620120p-1905732c.html ) to aid her in her conquest of the coveted Miss Universe Canada 2004 crown. Last night, her dream became a reality when she bested 49 other beauties for the top plum.
She is now on her way to the Miss Universe 2004 pageant set for June 1st in Quito, Ecuador.

Can't get enough with the Lebanese Versace, Elie Saab. His works are a breath of fresh air. Bigger and better pics of his couture.

Barbados possible host for future Miss Universe Pageant
Web Posted - Tue Jan 27 2004
COULD Barbados be a host-venue for the staging of one of the prestigious Miss Universe Pageants?
The possibility, according to local designer and Co-ordinator of the Miss Barbados Universe pageant Andy Niles, certainly does exist. Niles was the Master of Ceremonies during Sunday evening’s prize-giving function at Sandy Lane Resort’s Country Club.
Niles admitted to having “commenced investigations” into the local hosting of the Miss Universe Pageant, noting that “two preliminary meetings” have already been accomplished.
Asserting that Barbados has “everything that is necessary” to host such an event, he cited infrastructure such as “the resources, the facilities and the accommodation” in this regard.
The local designer also foresaw business opportunities for his design colleagues arising out of such a venture. Recounting the media-attention focussed in Panama on the pageant wardrobe of last year’s winner Nadia Forte, Niles expressed confidence in the ability of local designers to create quality products, noting that a similar pageant opportunity will augur well for international exposure.
Promising further updates “as time goes by,” Niles however deliberately gave nothing away with his prediction of Barbados as “the host of Miss Universe 2000-and-soon!”
