Yes folks, it has been officially confirmed that the Miss Universe pageant will travel to the South American continent for the 2nd time, when it broadcasts live from Quito, Ecuador in June next year.

Odessa Phillips was crowned Miss Guyana/Universe 2004 on Saturday night, edging out her fellow Miss Guyana World queen, Olive Gopaul in what was predicted to be a close contest between the two.
But while it might have been a night for beauty queens, the special guest, Calypso King, the Mighty Sparrow ruled the roost with pulsating rhythms that threatened to overshadow the proceedings.
Phillips, the 21-year-old West Demerara beauty, sponsored by Vonda Gaspar's Designs, grabbed the judges' nod with her answer to the final question and also her response to hostess, the 1998 Miss Universe, Wendy Fitz-william's questions about her platform.
Phillips, wearing what many described as a quite ordinary body-hugging green and gold gown, did not have the crowd's support as much as her main rival in the competition, but in the end her cooler disposition won the night.
Gopaul was the crowd's favourite from the start, dressed in a unique multi-coloured gown with straps and a daring slit that revealed silky smooth legs. The only thing she might have done wrong was to repeat herself when talking about her chosen platform. Full of attitude and very assertive, the 23-year-old former Spanish teacher, sponsored by Ameritech Global Guyana Limited, must have been left wondering what more she could have done.
She had to be satisfied with the first runner-up position, followed by Michelle Armstrong (Dipcon), Sergean Elias (Haynes Associates) and Joylyn Perreira (MTV 65).
As is the norm, the event started late and the restless audience broke into a slow clap as they waited some 45 minutes. Fitzwilliam and renowned radio broadcaster, Bobby Vieira, now living in the USA, hosted the evening's programme.
The show opened with a piece by the National Dance Company followed by a parade of the beauties, the girls clad in black close-fitting pants and orange and pink sleeveless shirts. The set was spectacular with two ships moored at the front of the stage and a walkway lined with fairy lights. Unfor-tunately some of the girls' gowns became entangled in these lights and they needed help extricating themselves.
Unlike at other pageants, the girls did not introduce themselves, and their parade was followed by a performance by Henry Rodney and company.
The audience did not mind waiting for the evening gown section given that the King of Calypso, `The Mighty Spar-row', put in an appearance and had the crowd, which included Prime Minister Sam Hinds and his wife, Yvonne, enthralled.
Sparrow, who still has his `Sugar Waist' and a golden voice, was a hit and many said they had really paid their money to see him perform and not the girls. They even called for him to keep on singing and for the pageant to be held on another day. He dished out a number of crowd favourites including `Saltfish', `Man in my bedroom', `Liar' and `Never eat a white meat yet'.
All 23 delegates then appeared in their evening gowns and as in previous years some local designs were found wanting, with some girls looking as if they were wearing night gowns. One girl must have left the stage in tears following the crowd's reaction to her outfit with many shouting out that her designer could only have hated her. Armstrong and Perreira were widely acclaim-ed to have had beautiful gowns.
After this segment the final fifteen were chosen. Besides the final five they included Verita George, Angelica Fredericks, Anniece Manjet, Zina Edwards, Tenesha Leacock, Teannie Causway, Ashwini Dusrajh, Alisha Faria, Melissa Harris and Karen Duke. They were all serenaded by local singing star, Ossie Nedd before modelling identical red bikinis
The judges then picked the final five who were briefly questioned on their platform. Was this the moment the crown slipped from Olive's well-manicured hand?
She said that were she to win the pageant she would use the forum to educate young people on the impact of HIV/AIDS. Then in wrapping up she stated very much the same thing.
The final question, asked by Fitzwilliam, was "What is success?" Gopaul and Phillips were the only ones who really answered the question.
Gopaul described success as an achievement adding that it was when someone dedicated energy and time to attain something they really wanted.
Perreira answered that success was being happy with who you were and knowing you could achieve more. Elias replied that success was having happiness in your life no matter how much money you had. Armstrong described success as being who you really were and not pretending.
Phillips said success was an accomplishment when someone overcame barriers to achieve something. Some of what she said was drowned out by the reaction of the crowd.
It was crunch time. Gopaul and Phillips, who have had a simmering rivalry going all year and have admitted there is tension in their relationship, held hands centre stage. When Phillips had passed on the baton to Miss World 2003, Alexis Glasgow, she had said that she (Phillips) wouldn't reign in Glasgow's glory, a suggestion that Gopaul, who had won the year before Phillips, had stood in her way. Phillips was finally announced the winner and Gopaul embraced her and kissed her on her cheek.
After winning, Phillips told reporters that she thanked God, stating that without him she would not have been crowned a second time. She said even though she was aware that the contest was really between her and Gopaul, in the end she was calm since she new what she was about. And putting the victory in context she said when she is finally admitted to the bar to practise law that would be her greatest success.
Gopaul said Saturday night was her last pageant, declaring that she was satisfied she had done her best.
Judging started two weeks before pageant night with the intelligence segment and the swimsuit competition.
The judges for the night were Malcolm Panday, June Griffith-Cullison, Patrick Denny, Mark Waldron, Hazel Octave-Hamilton, Captain Nickolette Henry, Al Creighton and Stanford Solomon.
Gopaul won for the Best Gown, Phillips, Best Smile, Michelle Armstrong, Best Swimsuit, Zena Edwards, Best Hairstyle and Alicia Faria, Miss Congeniality.
And after the hubbub was over, it was Sparrow time once again as the great Calypsonian rewarded those who remained in their seats with a half-hour of his hits.
This is the third Miss Guyana/Universe organized by Odinga Lumumba who holds the Miss Universe franchise. Phillips will be representing Guyana at the next Miss Universe pageant in Ecuador next year.
For the first time ever, touts were in evidence selling tickets for $500 more than the price originally available at.
Recently crowd behaviour at the National Cultural Centre has been rowdy and heavily criticised. The behaviour on Saturday night was much improved.

Odessa is Miss Guyana 2nd time around

Law student, Odessa Phillips, was named Miss Guyana Universe 2004 just after midnight Saturday, narrowly edging out Olive Gopaul for the chance to represent Guyana in Ecuador mid next year at the Miss Universe pageant.
Odessa, of Vergenoegen, on the East Bank of Essequibo, said after her crowning she felt "wonderful" and Olive Gopaul, who was named first runner-up, said she was happy for Odessa, the girl she crowned Miss Guyana World in 2002.
"I always knew it was going to be Odessa or me", Olive told reporters.
What is success? That was the final question. Odessa said success is accomplishment and probably snatched the crown away from Olive's hand when she added that success moreso comes from overcoming barriers in life.
As her answer, Olive said that success means achievement, especially when you achieve something that you really, really want.
After being crowned queen, just about four months after she ended her reign as Miss Guyana World, Odessa said she has not yet achieved success, and said she will feel that she has "accomplished" when she is accepted in the local bar. She is soon to enter Hugh Wooding Law School, but her reign could very well push that back.
In what was a head-on battle between the two former winners of Miss Guyana World, Odessa and Olive smoothed their way through the competition, leaving the other 21 contestants in their shadow.
Still, in the selection of the final five there were some remarkable surprises. Then again, throughout the pageant, there were surprises - some strange, some delightful.
Of the final five surprises was MTV court reporter Joylyn Perreira. The credit probably has to go to the design of her gown and her confident stride once she was among the top 15. She was named 4th runner-up.
A real surprise for a place in the top was Sergean Elias (3rd runner-up), but Michelle Armstrong's place was sure from the outset. Michelle was named 2nd runner-up.
For the special prizes, Olive's exquisite gown won her the Best Gown prize, Odessa was adjudged the contestant with the Best Smile, Alicia Faria was named Miss Congeniality, Michelle Armstrong was the best contestant in swimsuit, and Zena Edwards had the Best Hairstyle (huh?).
Outside of the thrilling performances by the calypso King of the World, the Mighty Sparrow, the pageant lacked entertainment, and the audio coming from the MC's was horrible. As for delightful surprises, the calypso king admitted to eating a "white meat" - but just once, he was quick to inform!
The organizers' attempt to show the delegates on video on side screen at the National Cultural Centre was a disaster; needless to say, it should have been part of the whole set up.
Despite a sober attempt at putting on some good costumes, the introductory dance segment by National Dance performances lacked any choreography of substance and they carried on too long before the delegates took their first walk after engaging in idle chatter while the dancers carried on.
It was only when the final five was announced that you actually heard them speak, and the other contestants were not heard of, rather from, and many patrons were left sailing as to who was who, even when the 15 semi-finalists were announced. If someone was introducing them, there certainly was no sound.
The stage setting was that of a ship, but the delegates were dressed far from sailors, as was the original plan announced by franchise holder Odinga Lumumba.
The pageant was the most disorganized of recent. At least it seemed that way with someone always hopping on stage, whispering "this and that" to the MC's.
However, the most shocking display was from the franchise holder himself, who seemed in a frenzy and was walking up and down, and at one point, walked right on stage and passed in front of the podium when MCs Bobby Vieira and former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam were speaking. Talk about bad manners!
That wasn't all, however. Before the announcement of the final five, Lumumba called Ms. Fitzwilliam backstage! Who cares what they talked about, or maybe we should care. The point is, it was most inappropriate and Lumumba could not have possibly seen that from Donald Trump, whom he would like to present one day a Miss Universe from Guyana.
As part of her preparation for the Mss Universe pageant, Lumumba has said that Odessa will spend time in the United States and London.

hello! gusto ko lang share na may friend ako na magjohjoin sa binibini... last year (2003) finalsist na ***. as in contestant na ***, then she backed out because of some personal reasons. sabi nila she would definitely win daw coz she's prety and smart. she have won miss manila 2000 i think... so hintayin na lang natin kung papalarin *** and represent the philippines in the big 3... hope she makes it.

Other countries bidding are the Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, France, Mexico & Thailand.
Chile is expected to shelve off US$ 10 million dollars to host the event... something which the government sees possible right now.

COOL LOSER: Whereas the delegates from India and Venezuela were griping for not winning Miss World, South Africa's Cindy Nell seems calm about her exclusion from the semi-finalist list. She was, however, a bit disappointed: '"I nearly toppled over when my name wasn't read out. The 106 women spent a month together in China before the ceremony and everyone had a pretty good idea who would reach the shortlist," Nell says. She confirmed the mixed feelings by other candidates about Davison's crowning, but praised Davison herself: "However, she is really very pretty. With women from 106 countries competing, you notice how cultures differ and some women were not shy to express their dismay." Finally, Nell acknowledges the true meaning of sportsmanship: "South Africans have come a long way in dealing with this type of thing and I think we handle disappointment more graciously." 1. The pageant's Live Telecast will be sometime between May 25 and June 3. The exact date will be known in 60 days.
2. The pageant will be beamed live via satellite to 650 million people in 158 different countries.
3. Fundacion Ecuador Executive Director Edith Garcia de Frias said the event will certainly put Ecuador back into the world map as a top tourist destination in South America. It's culture and art will take centerstage during the pageant proper.
4. 70% of the pageant activities will take place in the capital city of Quito. Fashion shows will be held in Guayaquil. Ecuadorean fashion will be honored during these events. Local designers are to participate.
5. 86 beauties from all over the world are expected in the pageant.
6. The Grand Fashion Show will take place at the Palacio de Cristal in Guayaquil on May 22. All delegates are to participate in this big event.
7. The Presentation Show and Live Telecast are to take place at the Centro de Exposiciones y Convenciones Mitad del Mundo (Cemexpo) in Quito. It has a seating capacity for 7,500 people.
8. The Ecuadorean government paid US$ 5 million to host the Miss Universe 2004 pageant.
9. Tickets for the Live Telecast cost US$ 250.
10. Marriott Hotel in Quito is the official residence of the Miss Universe 2004 delegates.
11. Grupo Intervencion y Rescate (GIR) is responsible for the security of the delegates, chaperones, stylists, make-up artists, judges and production crew during the 25-day stay in Ecuador for the pageant.

- Nytt syn på missekonkurranser Kathrine Sørland er kongerikets vakreste og skal representere Norge under Miss Universe-finalen i Equador i mai.
- Jeg er superfornøyd! Dette hadde jeg ikke regnet med, sier Kathrine Sørland til TV 2.
Kathrine Sørland fra Stavanger var storfarvoritt til å vinne kveldens Frøken Norge-konkurranse. En rundspørring TV 2 gjorde blant samtlige misser viste at de fleste tippet at nettopp Kathrine skulle stikke av med tiaraen.
Historisk
Med kveldens seier ble hun også historisk. Det er første gang en kvinne har vunnet Frøken Norge-konkurransen to ganger.
- Nå satser jeg på at Per Heimly og Christian Valen spanderer drinker på kveldens fest, stråler den nybakte missen.
Heimly og Valen satt i den kjendistette juryen på Golsfjellet. Etter det TV 2 Nettavisen kjenner til, var det nettopp fotograf Heimlys noe utagerende festing fredag kveld som forsinket starten på juryens gjennomgang med missene lørdag formiddag.
På henholdsvis andre og tredje plass kom Vivian Klovning fra Haugesund og Veronica Rath fra Finnsnes.
Kathrine Sørland kom på fjerde plass under den omstridte Miss World- konkurransen i fjor. I høst har hun vært Halvard Flatlands makker på gameshowet Casino på TV3.

And to think that she was able to edge Miss Universe top 10 placers Katerina Smrzova and Ndapewa Alfons in Miss World 2002... So we are all expecting her to be in the top 10 at the least.
I can't wait on how Miss universe make-up artists will transform this woman. I loved the Miss Universe looks of both Katka and Ndapewa.
The question is though if Kathrine can pull another Michelle McLean (MW top5, MU winner)! Although I like Kathrine, I hope she doesn't.
My faves so far for MU are France, Switzerland and Colombia!!!

Katrine Sorland could take it all. But the only thing that stands in her way from the Top 15 is that the Miss Norways aren't really known for their good taste in gowns. This is where the Swedes and the Finns have the
advantage (well in the case in 2003). Her Miss World gown won't cut it.

Musique: for quite some time (esp. during the 90's), there existed a 'miss great britain universe' pageant. it was traditionally held in january every year to select their bet for miss universe.
this, however, stopped in 2000. louise lakin, a semi-finalist of the miss great britain 2000 pageant (one that selects the british bet for miss tourism world), was sent to miss universe 2000.
i think this happened because of the huge scandal that befell the pageant org in '99. the original winner, nikki lane, was set to compete in miss universe '99. however it was revealed that she was pregnant and her 1st RU cherie louise pisani was sent to trinidad & tobago instead.

Before Wendy Fitzwilliam, there was another Trini girl who made her country proud. Wendy's predecessor Margot Bourgeois Miss Trinidad and Tobago 1997 and 2nd runner up in Miss Universe that same year.
