Turkish Gowns
I was puzzled why Miss Turkey World, albeit she was really stunning, wasn't able to get in the Top 20, now I understand why. This is the evening gown competition not swimsuit. So it looked really tacky.

Their Miss Universe rep had more taste, even if the gown was worn before, heck, it's Valentino.

Hi JENSIE and Lara!
Ngayon ko lang na realize na maganda ang bet natin sa Miss World 2003 (Mafae ang name niya). Imagine nakapasok siya sa Top 5 and nilampaso niya around 106 delegates (correct me if i'm wrong). I wish na siya na lang ang ipadala natin sa Miss Universe 2004. Besides may laban siya!
By the way sa 106 delegates ng Miss World 2003, kasali na ba ang mga Muslim countries? Hehehehe!!!
Share ko lang ang pic ni Mafae ...

Hi Cybermyx,
Well yeah I think Mafae can be a great rep for Miss Universe 2004, since she's really prepared na but unfortunately Stella doesn't recycle girls for Miss Universe (like Jensie said). And Miss Universe an entirely different ball game, it's more difficult. But after her winning performance in Miss World, maybe Stella could change her mind.
Hey favor lang, could sign this petition, we're just helping a friend out, who's close to the national director Miss Curacao Org. Just go a page back and you'll see the petition. Thanks

Cindy's the best - Tuesday 09, December-2003
THE JUDGES had their work cut out in choosing the Miss Barbados/Universe queen at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium Sunday night.
Even when the hosts made the announcement for the top three finalists, there was a tie.
From the nine lovely delegates who paraded on the international-styled catwalk, in designs by Nefertari and Wayne Smith among others, Cindy Batson (third left) emerged as Barbados’ new queen.
Sponsored by Fruesta, the 18-year-old outshone her rivals by also winning the Most Photogenic prize and standing out in the swimwear, interview and evening wear segments.
Second was Miss L’Oréal Michelle Bayley (right) who won the Personal Style prize, third was Miss VOB929.com Charise Eastmond (left), and fourth Miss Circuit Magazine Tennille Stoute.

Back to your question, South Africa can proudly say they're a "Rainbow Nation" because there's a lot of cultures from around the world that had contributed highly in forming the new South Africa, aside from the blacks and the European whites, you see a lot of Indians, Arabs, and even Indonesians, etc.
And it's not only the people, each region in South Africa has also distinct climates, the region around Cape Town (the Atlantic side) has a more European climate, Johannesburg- desert and dry, and Durban (the Indian ocean side) is where the beaches are. WAs able to visit South Africa back in August 2001. :D

Scandal in the advertising industry in South Africa... :wow:
Miss Universe 2002 3rd RU Vanessa Carreira in the controversial and misleading ad.
http://www.suntimes.co.za/2003/11/09/arts/5-p9weigh.jpg
'Misleading' slimming ads withdrawn
By SUTHENTIRA GOVENDER
A television advertisement promoting a weight-loss product endorsed by former Miss South Africa Vanessa Carreira has been withdrawn after it was found to have misled consumers.
The Advertising Standards Authority last week ordered that the Herbology Weight Loss ad, flighted on SABC3 for the past two months, be taken off air after finding that there was no substantiation to support the claim that the product resulted in weight loss.
Carreira, who is seen in the advert in a slinky bathing costume, said this week she used the product because it helped her maintain her figure. "Yes, it works if used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle ," she said, adding that "it was obvious to anyone that there was no miracle drug out there that will make you lose weight".
The ASA's ruling follows a complaint by Dr Harris Steinman of the Food Legislative Advisory Group, who said the ad implied that the use of the product alone would result in weight loss. He said Herbology should submit scientific evidence to support its claim that the use of the product on its own would result in weight loss, and that the ad did not state that the product should be used in conjunction with a calorie-reduced diet.
Two months ago, Steinman lodged a complaint with the ASA against TV ads for another slimming product, Bioslim, which were also found to be misleading.
"I am very unhappy with the spate of adverts claiming quick weight loss with some tablet or the other," Steinman said. "Losing weight is one of the most difficult things to do. It is very easy for consumers to get trapped by these claims. They all claim to be scientifically proven. But not a single one has been proven to bring about weight loss unless it is taken in conjunction with other things and exercise."
Dr Rudy Onia, registrar in clinical pharmacology at the University of Cape Town, said: "When you look at somebody wanting to lose weight, there is a very strong placebo - the power of the mind - component to it. I have not seen any scientific evidence that shows that it works better than the placebo."
Herbology's chief executive Tony Hicks said the company would comply with the ASA's ruling. "It's only a matter of adding to our adverts the words 'effective as part of a kilojoule-restricted diet'," he said.
Hicks said the ad was "taken the wrong way because Carreira said she only used Herbology Weight Loss".
"That could imply that she does not use any of my competitors' products or it could mean that she eats like a horse, only takes Herbology and loses weight.
"We sent them clinical trials to show that the products work in conjunction with the diet."

Beauty queen's harvest of joy
Published on Dec 11, 2003
Miss Universe is excited about being gowned in Thai silk and parading before the Queen to honour Her Majesty's 72nd birthday at a gala dinner - but she's excited, too, about having the chance to help get in the rice harvest in Roi Et.
Amelia Vega says she's looking forward to taking part in the World Jasmine Rice Fair in Roi Et province tomorrow, before the gala dinner in Bangkok.
"We have rice paddy at home too but I've never had anything to do with it", says Vega, a 19-year-old native of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where her father is a doctor and her mother, a former beauty queen, a pilot. "This is a great opportunity to do what I've never done before."
Vega arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday night for her first visit to the Kingdom. She will be one of a troupe of professional models including Methinee Kingpayom, Sonia Cooling and Marisa Anita walking the catwalk at the charity gala dinner to be presided over by Her Majesty at the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel.
As a celebrity spokesperson for many HIV/Aids organisations, the beauty queen will be visiting HIV-infected patients at the Red Cross Society while she is here.
"It's a beautiful feeling that I can help raise money for those people, knowing the money will go to help them," said Vega.
And even though her schedule is tight, Vega is hoping to find a little personal time so she can buy presents for her family.
"I'm going to have to do my Christmas shopping here," said Vega. "I'm going straight home [after Southeast Asia] so I have to find gifts for my folks."
Vega leaves for Vietnam on Tuesday to attend the Miss Vietnam Universe 2004 pageant in Hanoi.

Pressure mounts on Ecuador to send a worthy candidate to the Miss Universe 2004 pageant, which is set for June on its shores.
The last time Ecuador made it in Miss Universe was way back 22 years ago, when Lucia Vinueza made it to the Top 12 in New York.
The last time they won a special award was back in '92, when Maria Soledad Diab won Miss Photogenic in Thailand.

Miss USA pageant eyeing Bryan-College Station area
By CRAIG KAPITAN
Eagle Staff Writer

Steve Hodge, director of special event facilities for Texas A&M, center, talks with Miss Universe Organization's Tony Santomauro, vice president, business planning, and Paula M. Shugart, president, about Reed Arena during a tour of the complex Friday afternoon. The two were in town scouting Bryan-College Station as a possible location for the 2004 Miss USA pagaent.
The Texas A&M University campus is one of four main contenders to host the 2004 Miss USA pageant, a top official for the organization said Friday after touring the Bryan-College Station area.
“I think it’s a very strong possibility,” said Paula Shugart, president of the Miss USA parent company Miss Universe. She described A&M’s Reed Arena as “one of the best venues I’ve ever seen.”
Shugart and Tony Santomauro, vice president of business affairs for the organization, landed at Easterwood Airport on Friday afternoon after being invited to the area by Barbara Krueger — mother of Aggie Miss USA alumna Kandace Krueger.
Shugart and Santomauro were taken on a daylong tour through campus and the surrounding area in a caravan that included state Rep. Fred Brown and Barry Biggar, president and CEO of the Bryan-College Station Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The pageant officials were expected to return to New York City early Saturday morning.
“We have been very impressed by the sense of community here,” Shugart said, adding that the pageant thrives on community involvement.
Before making a final decision, the group will need to consult with NBC, which will broadcast the event, she said. An announcement of the location probably will come in early January.
Miss USA officials are looking at about 10 cities altogether, Shugart said, but the competition has boiled down to four major contenders. She declined to name the other areas under consideration.
Last year, the pageant was held in San Antonio. It was held in Gary, Ind., for two years prior to that.
While San Antonio is a much larger city than College Station, it was similar in that it had a small-town feel, Shugart said. Community involvement is more important than population, she explained.
Certain costs are involved in producing a show, and a partner community is expected to help out with goods and services, such as lodging for the contestants and production crew or providing meals, she said.
In return, however, the pageant generally devotes about nine minutes of air time specifically to highlighting the host community. The show is aired in 65 to 70 countries.
In the case of San Antonio last year, Shugart touts, the city’s Web site traffic increased by 1,000 percent on the day following the pageant.
“We put more money back into the community by the time we leave,” she said.
Biggar has taken a similar stance, stating that the national exposure from such an event would be worth millions in advertising dollars.
Although a pageant date has not yet been set, it is expected to take place in late March or early April, organization officials said.

Don't be deceived. She's not black. She's the 2nd Indian to win Miss South Africa after Kerishnie Naicker in '98.
The last black woman to represent South Africa in Miss Universe was Mbali Gasa way back in MU97.
Jo-Ann Cindy Strauss is not black. She's a mixture of different races. I forgot the term though.

The Beauty Contest Association (BCA) of Taiwan has won the license to send representatives to the Miss Universe pageant. It beat the Beauty Development Association. (BDA)
They shelved out NT$ 700,000 just to get the franchise. That's roughly around US$ 20,000.
However, it was reported that their license would cost NT$ 2 million next year. That's equivalent to US$ 57,000! :wow:

Newly-crowned Miss South Africa 2003 Joan Ramagoshi (right) shares the stage with Miss South Africa Teen 2003 Masechaba Dlengezele...

I was stunned by my selection, says Miss SA
December 14 2003 at 02:03PM
Newly crowned Miss SA Joan Ramagoshi says she is "stunned and overwhelmed" by her selection as South Africa's most beautiful woman.
At a press conference after the annual pageant at Sun City in the North West on Saturday night, Ramakgoshi said the previous Miss SA, Cindy Nell, had been her inspiration and role model.
Ramagoshi, 24, lives in Pretoria and owns a public relations agency.
Her selection means Ramagoshi will be able to participate in the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants.
"I am still trying to get my life together," a delighted Ramagoshi exclaimed at the conference.
At the same event held in the Super Bowl at the sprawling Pilanesberg complex, a Parktown High School for Girls beauty, Masechaba Dlengezele, 18, was crowned Miss SA Teen.
Dlengezele aims to become an "internationally acclaimed corporate attorney", and she likes horse-riding, reading and meditating.
Though the Super Bowl was not packed, organisers said national television coverage meant that sponsors got their money's worth. - Sapa

A nice article about Miss Universe Jamaica 2003 Michelle Lecky
MICHELLE LECKY won the Miss Jamaica Universe Competition on May 5, 2003. Since then, she has represented her country in the international contest in Panama. During her one year reign as Miss Jamaica Universe, she has been involved in various charities. With the calendar year almost at an end and her tenure nearly over, The Sunday Gleaner sat down with the soft-spoken beauty queen to find out how her reign has been.
AR: What was the experience like as Miss Jamaica Universe and at the Miss Universe Competition in Panama?
ML:My experience as Miss Jamaica Universe has been great. It's been harder than I thought it would be in terms of support, in Jamaica on a whole, and I know the economy is not doing well; finance is very difficult. But it's been a great experience.
I've grown a lot as a person, I've gained a lot more confidence, I've met a tremendous amount of people, I've made so many contacts and its really a stepping stone for anybody who wants to do anything.
Myself, I've always been more into Finance and the type of people that I've met - because that's where I want to be eventually - have been big in the financial industry in Jamaica. So it's a big stepping stone for anybody in the field.
AR: In what way was the support of Jamaicans not been as forthcoming as you expected?
ML: It was incredibly difficult to find sponsors to go to Miss Universe. I found myself spending my own money to buy clothes so that I could look decent down there and Uzuri International were the only people who gave me clothes to go. Church's Chicken was great; they gave me... I believe it was Ja$100,000 to go buy a few things in Miami. I did that, but I spent quite a bit of money and I'm still spending quite a bit of money.
I left my job so I could concentrate on this more and do a lot more charity work. I didn't think it would be as difficult to make money but I guess the Jamaican economy just isn't doing very well, so it's harder than I thought.
But I just started a new part-time job with RE TV, hosting, directing and producing my own show, Under The Rock. That show was aired a month ago. It's two shows that are shown once every two weeks and that brings in a little income, so I can live. I've been able to give back to Jamaica to the best of my ability; I've been working a lot with HIV/AIDS, educating on prevention and awareness, and that has been incredibly rewarding.
AR: What is the focus of your show 'Under the Rock'?
ML: It's a show on issues that are happening in Jamaica. It's way different from what RE TV is known for. It's a more serious side of RE TV.
My first show, for example, was on deportees and the type of deportees that have come to Jamaica, the lack of support when they arrive here and them getting into "mischief" once they're here.
Right now I'm working on a show for rape, for Christmas, and one for the Children's Home. It's really a show to educate about political, economical, and health issues.
AR: Is there any real social consciousness/awareness behind beauty contests, or is it just a matter of a photo op?
ML: I believe that is the case with a lot of beauty queens, but for myself I would disagree with that. I've been very, very active. I've been able to send 20 children back to school, who were affected by AIDS, and in doing so I've harassed a lot of companies and a lot of persons to donate to the cause and I've been the one to drive around and give out letters and pick up cheques and all those things. But there are queens that have not really given back much _ but to each his own. Nobody pushed me to do this. It wasn't a requirement that I have to do anything. I decided I wanted to use the title and really do something with it.
AR: Is there any one charity that you enjoy working with, that is near and dear to you?
ML: Yes. The HIV/AIDS charity. I think when I decided that I really wanted to do something with the title, there was a lot of media around HIV, and people discriminating against people living with the virus. I thought someone needs to do something and I'm gonna try my best to help out. It was just a few very scary statistics that really prompted me to get involved with it. At first I was a little scared and hesitant to work with them, but after I got to learn more about the virus it was not very scary at all. I've learnt so much from them about life and how cruel people can be at times.
AR: Are there any particular functions that a Miss Jamaica Universe must fulfill during her reign?
ML: Its pretty much up to me to decide what I want to do. Pulse, as my agents, will suggest things like "it would be good for you to take up a cause and work on it", but as far as responsibilities and things that you must do there is no must-must, but they always encourage you to do your best. It's not mandatory to do it, unfortunately. I think it should be mandatory. But, at the same time, you have to want to do something to do it properly. With this I must also say it's incredibly time demanding - the charity work - because if I had a job I wouldn't have been able to do as much as I did.
AR: What are your impressions of the Miss Universe Competition?
ML: Amazing. I have new appreciation for these pageants. It was a huge production, I met so many people. There is no place in the world that I could go to and not have somebody to call. There were 83 countries there. As far as _ I don't know if I should say this but I didn't think Miss Dominican Republic would have won. But it's hard to pick a winner.
The judges do what they do best, knowing what they know. They only have one or two impressions, but I think it was a good competition. If I could do it all over again I think I could do exceptionally well, because I know what they expect. But it was great. I felt like a celebrity the whole time I was there. The amount of attention that we got from the media, from just the people in general, it was just unbelievable.
I think everybody felt like Princess Di, getting a lot of attention, and security was unbelievable. I think we must have left the hotel three times in the one month that I was there, because when we went out one day there was an incident when I think a car came in front of one of the buses to try and slow it down.
The police got involved and there were guns and everything. So after that they were like 'OK, everybody comes to us'. We had a lot of functions in the ballroom. It was wonderful. I really encourage everybody who wants to try out for it, to definitely go for it.
AR: What do you think the judges look for in a Miss Universe?
ML: At Miss Universe... Mr. Cooper at Pulse had read the requirements to me, what they look for, and I don't remember everything, but I distinctly remember that they weren't looking for anybody who was cocky or overly confident. They were looking for somebody who was intelligent, who knew who she was and carried herself accordingly.
The way that it was judged, they had 10 judges divided in two; they had two panels of five. You go into a room and stand at a podium and they asked you questions and the questions varied. Some were about yourself, some were about your country, some were about your opinion on different issues. We had two chances to make a good impression. You had the preliminary show, the show that occurred before the actual night everybody walks in their bathing suits, everybody walks in their evening gown and the judges judge you on the way you carry yourself.
The actual day the top 10 have already been chosen; they narrowed that down with the interviews and the preliminary show. Then the top 10 walk in their evening gown and swimsuits in front of a set of new judges and then those judges picked their top five based on the way they carry themselves. I actually met one of the CEOs; I sat beside him on the plane from Panama to Miami and I asked him 'do the judges watch us at all before the actual night?' And he was like 'no'. But why? Because they don't get to know who you really are.
AR: What are your impressions of the recently concluded Miss World Competition?
ML: I think that Miss Universe is a better production. In all honesty. But, I mean, Miss World is great. I think Jade did a great job of representing Jamaica in the competition. She made the top 20, which is absolutely wonderful, and I'm very, very happy for her. I can see a difference in the way that they pick a Miss World. Miss South Africa came third in the Miss Universe and didn't even place in the top 20 in Miss World. So they look for different things completely.
AR: As a beauty queen do you feel that people value you more as 'Miss Jamaica Universe' than as 'Michelle'?
ML: Yes, I would say that I have come across people like that. It is a little difficult to sift through those that are really being genuine and those that are not. I can say that people are more willing to talk to me if I say that it's Miss Jamaica Universe, definitely. Definitely it makes a tremendous difference. Yeah, because who is Michelle? You know. But the title really does do a lot, which I'm grateful for, and at the same time I'd like to be known for being myself as well.
AR: Do you get hit on by men more now than before you were crowned Miss Jamaica Universe
ML: I would say yes. It's been more in a respectful way, though. I wouldn't say I get the same comments I did prior. It's different; they approach in a more respectful way.
I think that it's different in a sense that someone might call me and say "would you like to go out to dinner sometime?", whereas before when you are in a club you know how the men go, you know, 'come here', things like that. They don't do that as much, anyway.
AR: Does the diet and exercise routine become a part of your lifestyle, even after the competition?
ML: I definitely fell off when I came back. I think I was so controlled in Panama that when I came back it was just like you know, O.K. When I went down there they had every kind of dessert you could ever imagine. If I wanted pizza, I could have pizza, if I wanted Cheesecake, it was all laid out right there.
It was very difficult, but I can say I never touched dessert once and I think when I got back it was all that was in my head. I lost a tremendous amount of weight when I went and gained back the majority of that, but I'm back on track and I'm exercising every day again.

Miss Universe makes an offer
Published on Dec 16, 2003
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday that he would consider an invitation from Miss Universe Amelia Vega for Thailand to host the Miss Universe pageant in 2005.
Vega, who is on a two-week visit to Thailand, made the invitation on behalf of Miss Universe Co while meeting Thaksin at Government House.
Vega said that Miss Universe Co had invited Thailand to host the pageant because of the country's good image and readiness to organise international events.
Thaksin said he would instruct relevant agencies to study the feasibility of hosting the pageant. He said the government would support any company that wants to host the pageant on behalf of the Kingdom.
Thailand hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1992.

At right is Ethiopia's representative to Miss Universe 2004, Atetegeb Tesfaye Worku. She was the first runner-up to Hayat Ahmed, who was a semi-finalist in the recently concluded Miss World.
IMO, Atetegeb's prettier than Hayat.

This is the article that proves that De Fontaney's Miss France is going to Miss Universe once again.
ALLONS-Y, EQUATEUR! The De Fontenay girl, Létitia Bléger, 22, is going to Miss Universe after all. Michel Le Parmentier, president of the true and official Miss France (Comité Miss France - CMF) informed me that his group had lost the franchise to the highest bidder - Endemol - the billion-dollar entertainment company that produced top-rated reality shows such as "Big Brother", "Survivor" and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?". Madame Geneviève de Fontenay (GDF) and her son Xavier couldn't be happier; this mother and son team had sold their Société Miss France (SMF) to Endemol, although the de Fontenays continue to run the candidate selection process. Endemol also now owns TF1, the television network that usually broadcasts Miss France and Miss Europe. How did GDF persuade Endemol to repurchase the Miss Universe franchise? Probably with much sinister slyness and elegant deception, in the same way that she snaked her way to becoming SMF's director.
In the article that I wrote about the Miss France controversy, I discuss the history behind the ongoing battle between the two Miss France committees and the main reason for this battle. CMF, which was originally founded by Guy Rinaldo and now presided by Antoine de Villejoie (whose right-hand man is Michel Le Parmentier), has always been a non-profit pageant group since 1954. GDF, who was one of the original officers of CMF (she was known at the time under the name Geneviève Mulmann), and her then husband Louis Poirot wormed their way to directorship and established CMF as a profit organization without consulting with Rinaldo and the rest of the group. As a result, Rinaldo expelled Mulmann and Poirot who in turn established their own Miss France committee as a business enterprise - which is illegal because it infringes on the copyright of CMF that has owned the title since 1954.
From an entertainment perspective, Endemol's takeover of TF1 and SMF may benefit all parties involved. SMF's Miss France telecast has been one of the most popular shows on French television; Endemol's direction may make the show as one of the most widely seen pageant shows in the world, rivaling Miss Universe and Miss World. Before Endemol, Miss Universe was never shown live on French TV and in some parts of Europe; this was a major inconvenience for many Europe-based Miss Universe fans who had to wait weeks later for the delayed telecast. But starting next May, Europeans will be seeing a broadcast of the pageant live from Ecuador, and possibly daily updates of pageant events.
• FROM ETHICS TO AESTHETICS, AND BACK TO ETHICS: I received a lengthy e-mail from a pageant friend, Camilo, a Colombian who studies in France and who saw the show live on television. According to Camilo, the production has improved from past years, although he was quick to comment that Endemol's takeover provided SMF a major vehicle to promote its merchandise such as the Miss France Beauty Kit. A segment of the show was devoted to GDF's fifty years of service to her Miss France committee, and several former Misses were invited to honor the Lady with the Hat. Notably absent was Sophie Thalmann (1998) whose book relates her unpleasant experiences with the Fontenays. Likewise, Camilo criticized the Miss Universe Organization for reoffering the franchise to a couple of manipulators. What is even more appalling is that Xavier de Fontenay, who years ago publicly boasted that his Miss France show was bigger than Miss Universe, now finds himself praising a pageant that could be the only hope in fixing SMF's tarnished image. Some fans, including myself to a certain degree, share Camilo's sentiments.
My main concern is that the repurchase may inspire similar fraudulent pageant organizations to outbid their authentic counterparts and consequently to cause expensive legal battles and perhaps severe psychological depression. As for CMF, it might have lost one of its many battles with SMF, but not necessarily the war. CMF retains its franchises for Miss World, Miss Earth and various international pageants and will continue to fight to regain its Miss Universe franchise.
Meanwhile, several message board posters have commented that the SMF girls are more beautiful than the ones sent by CMF. We all know that beauty is subjective, and when some of us would prefer the well-coiffed and elegantly dressed SMF girls, still many prefer the more natural and casually attired CMF beauties. Comments have also been posted regarding the notion that the French people consider SMF as the official Miss France organization. This notion is popular only because the Miss France contests organized by SMF have been televised and have been favored by the French media; the notion, however, is just that - a notion. The French media favors SMF because it has been duped in the last half-century by the GDF and her fellow manipulative and deceiving cohorts. And if most of the viewers believe in everything that the media says, then the result is a society of intellectually challenged citizens. Deceit and ignorance can come a long way, and with the power of the Internet, it is capable of duping and brainwashing even more people, especially those who only accept what they want to believe.

Kidnappers free Miss Universe finalist after getting her autograph
A gang of kidnappers has freed their captive - a former Miss Universe runner-up - after getting her to autograph 15 calendars featuring nude pictures of her.
http://www.ananova.com/images/web/79349.jpgVenezuelan model Veruska Ramirez, a former Miss Venezuela, was robbed of a large quantity of foreign currency and personal belongings and then kidnapped from her car for three hours in Valencia, said her manager, Luigi Ratino.
The thieves saw a box in her car containing the 15 calendars of naked photographs of the beauty queen.
They asked her to autograph the calendars and made off with them, leaving her on a city street, said Mr Ratino.
"They were surprised when they asked her name and discovered that it was the famous Miss Venezuela," said Ratino.
The brunette, who won the Miss Venezuela title in 1997 and was a finalist in the Miss Universe pageant the following year, was not mistreated by the thieves, Mr Ratino added.
"They didn't harm her, didn't touch her," he said.
Police are investigating.

Chile is dead serious in hosting Miss Universe 2005.
Since Santiago will host the APEC Forum next year, proceeds of the event will be used to secure its bid to host the pageant the year after.
The Chilean government strongly believes the pageant will put the country back on the world map. It will also promote Chile as a top tourist destination.

Miss Universe 2003: Vietnamese land and people are very beautiful
Miss Universe 2003, Amelia Vega from the Republic of Dominica, is now in Hanoi to attend the "Miss Hanoi-Vietnam 2003" contest. She said that Vietnamese women are very beautiful and charming. Vega will be at the contest on Saturday to present crown for the most beautiful girl, who will take part in the Miss Universe 2004 contest in Ecuador for the first time.
Vietnam is the fourth country in Asia that Miss Universe has visited. During her stay, Miss Universe has visited some sightseeing places and historical relics in the city, such as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda and Quan Thanh Temple. "Vietnam is one of most beautiful countries. Vietnamese cuisine and cultural tradition are very nice. I love Vietnam very much", Vega said.

For this year, I chose Kristi Glakas's priceless reaction when she was named Miss Virginia USA 2004 last month.

I chose this one coz Americans tend to over react whenever they win pageants, be it local or international. They act as if their entire life depended on the crown. This, I find funny. :teehee:

Are Miss Indias losing their way?
Is it bad luck or bad grooming that has cost Miss Indias at least 9 international titles in the last three years? HTTabloid exposes the ugly face of Indian beauty.
According to former Miss Universe Lara Dutta, loss of self-motivation could be one reason why the country of late has produced beauty without purpose. "It's natural to get carried away by the first flush of excitement after you win the Miss India title. But you can't afford to ignore your body at any stage. Instead of treating the national pageant as a stop-over, the girls get completely lost in the euphoria. The shift in focus and inconsistency in grooming that between the national and international pageants has proved fatal to our chances at Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Earth contests," she says.
While most unsuccsessful contestants claim that a global change in how beauty is perceived and the commercial interests of cosmetic giants may be resposnible for their downfall, industry professionals are not buying the argument. The problem they say, could be much closer home.
"I think it's high time we introspect and pinpoint the lacunae in our preparations. While there is no shortage of infrastructure and organisational support, it is the individual effort that is sadly lacking. Winners at the national pageant must learn to use the time they get before their interntaional appearance in a more disciplined and professional manner. In my opinion, the girls who have represented India in recent years did not have the required motivation to prove their mettle at a world-class gathering," insists leading fashion choreographer Vidyun Sigh.
Sushma Puri, Chief Executive Officer, Elite Model Management (India), agrees. "The girls tend to ignore themselves after winning a national title. They go back to a normal diet and that often leads to their undoing. Your support group can help you only so much - a contestant who doesn't have her eyes set on the ultimate goal will certainly not go far," she says.
But Nikita Anand, Miss India 2003, who finsihed out of the final fifteen at this year's Miss Universe contest in Panama, cautions against putting the entire blame on lack of individual effort. According to her: "As far as I am concerned, it wasn't bad grooming or shift of focus that affected my chances. There are other factors that determine the final outcome and these you cannot ignore. Business interests of the sponsors could be one of them. As a particpant you can do little else than give it your best shot. The rest is destiny." Hindustan Times, India, 23.12.2003
http://www.hindustantimes.com/wfsf/high/2003/12.15/images/high496324.jpg
note: It's interesting to note that we thought our girls were the only one lacking drive after winning the local pageant, India faces the same thing as well.
