I think the Philippines is not ready and never will be ready to have a black Miss Philippines. Kasi firstly, she will be ignored in Miss Universe or in any other pageant kasi face it, madaming black delegates kaya. She will just be like any other black delegate. And besides, we're an Asian country, our features are way different, the Filipina beauty is distinct and unique. I could not imagine even having a black Miss Japan. Sure Sweden, Finland, France and even Austria had sent black delegates already, but in Europe and Latin America (USA given na yun), the African race has been absorbed by their culture- especially in Latin America- dito hindi.

What Bb. Pilipinas Org. should do is to follow Miss Universe's foot steps. It was "redefined," they became hip and was able to adapt to meet the needs of the new century. Well, I dunno when will this happen. That's the only time they would be able to attract many beautiful Filipinas.

Regarding Miss Mexico, I read something about the issue why they're not doing well is because the Miss Mexico owner, Lupita Jones does not want another Mexican Miss Universe. Ayaw niyang masapawan. But these are just rumors, I don't know if this is really true. But come to think of it, if you see the calibre of their girls, parang totoo nga.

The beauty of Miss Yaracuy does grow on you. NOw i'm beginning to see the reason why she was voted Miss Sonrisa (Best smile). She just had too much make up then, so we were not able to asses her well.

mas late reaction to' :) i also agree with Lara that indeed height factor is a big plus in beauty pageants. although it counts but aside from the height, you should have the right projection. it could work both ways actually, if you are tall you can be noticed easily. also your not so desirable aspects would obviously be noticed. if you are tall and have the right projection then were talking intimidation here. you would command respect from the other candidates. :p i'm not sure if i'm making sense actually but this is just my opinion.

as regards to a black filipina titleholder. i guess this would not work for us because precisely as Lara has mentioned our "asian" features works positively for us. and considering that our country is a melting pot of different races, the delegates that we send cannot be stereotyped as black, latina, caucasian or even asian. they are stand outs being filipinas. :p

i'm terrified with what has happened to adriana prieto(?). she looks like a drag queen or a matrona. she was so lovely when she competed for miss world. what happened to her is quite the unusual because i have noticed that most beauty queens become more stunning after their reign. i think something not so good must have happened to her. could you some research on this? :D

Regarding Andreina Prieto... Her beauty ain't natural in the very first place... Prior to competing in Miss World 2001, she admitted having 3 surgeries: breast implants, nose job and liposuction... Osmel Sousa spent a staggering US$ 72,000 (roughly Php 3.7 M) just to prepare Andreina for her pageant. This explains why her beauty sorta "plunged" deep down after her reign... It ain't natural kasi... :down:

What I listed were their press-released height. Shempre hindi yun yung exactong height measurement nila coz they always add 2-3 inches to the height kapag barefoot.

Lorena Pangan is another 5'11" stunner. She was a semi-finalist during Bb. Pilipinas 1995. :)

Georgina Sandico's press-released height on the official Bb. Pilipinas 1999 website was 5'11". Pero she's only 5'9" talaga. Maybe si Jamine Esperat yung 3rd girl na tinutukoy mo.

An interesting comment regarding the rescheduling of Miss T&T Universe:


The highly anticipated Miss T&T Universe pageant was due to be held on September 28th and has been been rescheduled for November 2nd. Many pageant fans in T&T are particularly dissappointed about the post postponement of the Miss T&T Universe pageant which is expected to be highly competitive the Universe girls are fantastic and have really captured the hearts of the T&T Public. There has also been a lot of hype about the show which is expected to be very non traditional and exciting.

An interesting side note, one of the Miss T&T Universe delegates, Donna Pierre Miss St Augustine has caused quite a stir due to her decision to enter and continue in the competition with her natural hair. What is interesting is the fact that of all the girls she has had the most hair stlyes, sometimes her hair is in locks, other times a stylish afro, sometimes in canerows or very lose braids so who says natural hair can't be styled. Donna with her natural hair and good looks has emerged as one of the favourites for the crown. The show has also encouraged the girls to stay away from the weaves and extentions becuse I think this is hopefully the direction Miss Universe may be headed. So T&T has obviously moved beyond the eurocentric.

MingTsai: Yup, Vanessa Fanessi was indeed a runner-up in the Miss Carabobo 2002 pageant. Sa Miss Venezuela pageant kasi, it does not necessarily mean that you hail from a particular state in order for you to represent it. Most of the time, Osmel assigns a particular delegate to represent a particular state.

Another example I can give is the Miss Zulia 2002 pageant. It's winner was Ana Quintero, who was crowned Miss Zulia 2002 herself. Her runners-up Maria Virginia Bastidas and Yasmeli Perez were crowned Miss Peninsula Goajira and Miss Costa Oriental respectively.

Another example is Minorka Mercado. She represent the state of Apure during Miss Venezuela 1993. However, she's from Caracas naman talaga eh. She was just assigned by Osmel to represent Apure.

However, there are exceptions to this. Alicia Machado represented Yaracuy in Miss Venezuela 1995. The thing is, she indeed hails from Yaracuy!

I don't have my favorites for Miss Venezuela yet! Its so hard to choose. There are no clear stand-outs unlike Eva Ekvall's year where you could pinpoint the strong delegates. There are delegates kasi who looked good during the Sonrisa tapos not so good sa Official pix! Somehow there seems to be inconsistency.

Si Maliksi (Santarin) ay naging Bb. Pilipinas-International noong 1993. Kasabayan nito sa naturang beauty pageant si Ms. World 2nd Princess Ruffa Gutierrez.

Ayon sa sources, ang dating beauty queen ay dinala sa nasabing ospital noong Huwebes dahil sa aneurysm o pag-alsa ng utak. Ang naturang medical term ay nangangahulugan ng “dilation of a section of an artery due to weakness of the artery wall often resulting to hemorrhage.”

Bagama’t patuloy na itinatanggi ng pagamutan at maging ng ilang kaanak at malalapit na kaibigan ng ex-beauty queen, isang source ang nagsabing nag-ugat sa liposuction ang kalagayan ngayon ng babae.

Nabatid na sumailalim ito sa naturang operasyon ng paghigop ng mga taba sa katawan sa isang klinika sa SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. Tumanggi ang source na tukuyin ang klinika.

Hinihinalang may kaugnayan ang liposuction at ang panganganak nito. Dadalawang buwan pa lamang umanong nagsisilang ng malusog na sanggol si Maliksi nang sumailalim ito sa nasabing operasyon.

A tribute to the best delegate Panama ever sent to Miss Universe... for now. When she won Miss Panama last year a lot of people including myself never thought she would go that far, but after her drastic transformation during the long preparation for MU, she did turn out to be a stunner that silenced the other Latin pageant powers. her beauty was new in the Latina pageant scene, she was natural and simple, not matching the pageant stereotype that the Latin queens are all "manufactured."

Well oh well, at least two of my bets made it to the Top 5. Quite a shock and disappointment that we were given the wrong information. No thanks to those bozos in panama channel in mirc. Malamang they're the sabog type, because Jensie chatted with them in an un-Godly hour (Panama time). Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see what kind of make over she would be given. Though I'm quite skeptical Panama would make it next year. But unlike Jensie's remarks, I'm not going to have a final say. There's still a big room for improvement. I bet Panama would give us the shock of our lives come May. There are so many queens out there who were given a not so good first impression, but come pageant time, they wowed us.

Inside a sugar pink villa tucked in an upmarket district of Caracas, a team of experts labor day and night to forge a top quality product. Amid garishly decorated rooms, they fashion and craft for months before emerging with the finished article - women who will take crown after the international beauty competition crown.


The team's efforts have made Venezuela a leader in the field of beauty; the country of 22 million has produced five Miss Worlds and four Miss Universes. But the sensational results are a walking advertisement of manufactured beauty and a kick in the teeth for the more natural look.


Beauty in Venezuela is produced factory style in the Miss Venezuela school where 28 candidates slog for six months in the gym, at deportment classes and in hair and make up sessions.


"This is a Barbie production line. No, not Barbies, some of those are ugly - this is a doll production line," says Osmel Sousa, the acclaimed King of Beauty, who is the mastermind behind a team of professionals.


Increasingly, beauty comes with a sharp edge-an edge in the form of a scalpel. Most candidates in the annual Miss Venezuela show have had what the Miss Venezuela Organization coyly refers to as "small touches" to their body, face, or teeth.


"Natural beauty no longer exists. I think it will come to a point in the world where plastic surgery is as accepted as cutting your nails," says Miss Venezuela orthodontist Moises Kaswan. Of course, Venezuela's dazzling racial mix of Carribean, indigenous South American and European means Sousa's team starts off with quality raw materials.


Using that as a base, the molding process starts at the beginning of the year when young hopefuls wend their way to the beauty school to fill out application forms. Many have already been spotted in nightclubs, supermarket or bus lines.


After weighing and measuring, the hundreds of hopefuls are subjected to a performance not unlike a dog show. Parading up and down in costumes, they are photographed from all angles. Gums are pulled back to inspect teeth, thighs are kneaded to quantify body fat and the girls' potential is openly discussed.


After years spent creating the perfect woman on paper as a child and holding mock beauty competitions with cut-out dolls, Sousa knows exactly what he is looking for. "A woman has to strike me like a blow - I need yo have a 'feeling.' She must have a model's body but the attributes of a Hollywood star."


His definition of beauty is reflected in the candidates. Although the majority of Venezuelans are dark haired with coffee colored skin known as morenas - many of the candidates are white, with more than a smattering of blondes. Sousa also states emphatically that he does not find black women attractive. And in a nation where most people are small, the candidates are tall - Sousa says they need to make an impression because Venezuela's position in the alphabet means its candidates are the penultimate to appear in competitions.


Although the candidates profess in true beauty queen style that internal beauty is more important, Sousa says that's not the case. "Beauty is in the eye, not the ear," he says. resting back in his armchair which is perfectly angled at a round pedestal in the center of the roon where potantial candidates will stand.


After selecting his 28 "rough diamonds," Sousa and his team spend the next six months polishing before the Miss Venezuela competition in September.


First stop on the beauty treadmill is the luxurious and comfortable surgery of Dr. Pierini, who boasts that he can perform six nose jobs in one morning. Pierini starts snipping as soon as possible to give the scars a chance to heal before the girls climb into their bathing suits.


Before plastic surgery was taboo...but now everyone accepts it," says the doctor. His most common operations are nose jobs, eyebrow lifting to open up the face and cheek and lip augmentation ("now very fashionable"). The perfect breasts are molded, while unwanted flab on the stomach and hips is sucked away. "One millimeter can change a face so much,"says Piereni.


While he carves out perfection, Kaswan works to give Sousa's candidates "Farrah Fawcett teeth that are toilet bowl white." Calling himself a "smile architect," Kaswan's most common change is to cut the gums to create an almost perfect smile.


The openness about the surgery reinforces many Venezuelan's view on beauty, where fashion watchwords are already tight, dazzling and bright. Feminism has barely left its mark on the country, which is reportedly the world's biggest per capita consumer of beauty products.


Entrance to the beauty school is seen as one of the highest honors a young woman can attain, briging with it instant fame, glory, and a fast track route into modeling, soap operas and even Venezuelan politics like what Miss Universe 1981 Irene Saez did.


The idea of manufactured beauty is also spreading from Venezuela to other countries. Recent years have been a growing number of beauty queen candidates and other women keen to change their appearance coming to Venezuela for plastic surgery from Latin America, the Carribean and even the US. Some candidates have been petitioned Sousa to help their candidates with other aspects of their training, while a handful now operate similar organizations.


Sousa declines to think of himself as a descendant of Pygmalion, the Greek king who fell in love with the statue he carved. His staff, though , have a different view of his role. "Cloning?Osmel has been doing it for years with the girls," jokes Kaswan

An interesting piece regarding the election of Miss Panama:


Her name is Stefanie de Roux and she is the new Miss Panama for Miss Universe. The tall model (1.78 m) from Panama City who's currently attending college in Dallas, TX, USA, was crowned in a ceremony that took place for more than 5 hours, on Thursday night. Stefanie will have the greatest responsibility among all 2003 Miss Universe delegates: She will be the host contestant.

The biggest surprise of this year's Miss Panama pageant was the crowning of Miss Panama World, Yoselyn Sánchez, a 21 year-old college student. 1st runner-up was Yanela De Sedas, 2nd runner-up was Nelda Sanchez and the 3rd runner-up was Maria Isabel Arias.

A "triple tie", as told by the hosts before reading the results, left Yanela de Sedas -the absolute favorite during the weeks of the pageant- without a crown. Those attending the pageant left the theater in complete disbelief. Newspapers, contestants and people involved with the pageant have questioned the results, but the Miss Panama organization hasn't spoken on the matter yet.

It has never won Miss World.

MISS WORLD BOYCOTT OVER NIGERIAN STONING

PARIS, France -- The reigning Miss France has said she will boycott the Miss World pageant in Nigeria in protest at a death by stoning sentence given to a woman there for having sex outside of marriage.

Sylvie Tellier told France-Inter radio that she felt a moral responsibility to pull out of the November 30 event in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

"We're in the 21st century," Tellier told France-Inter.

"They're condemning a woman under the pretext that she committed adultery and brought a child into the world. I think the world is upside down!"

Last month, an Islamic court in northern Nigeria rejected single mother Amina Lawal's appeal against a stoning sentence for having sex outside of marriage.

The 30-year-old had given birth to a daughter more than nine months after divorcing her husband.

The sentence is scheduled to be carried out in 2004 after she finishes weaning the baby.

The stoning would be the first in Nigeria since a dozen states adopted Islamic law, or Shariah, in 1999.

Tellier said she was "aware that (her) boycott was not going to alter the course of the world," but it could alter the Miss World pageant. She called on other beauty queens to follow her lead.

"We have to revolt against it."

Regarding back to Miss Panama concerning a lot of people, including myself who are not satisfied of her winning. Remember when Sylvie Tellier won Miss France? A lot of us raised hell when she won because we thought she was underserving, there were a lot of French girls more elegant then her. But when Miss Universe came, we were all shocked by her drastic transformation, a lot of us fell in love with her beauty and elegance especially during the Parade of Nations. When she said her name and her country like a sophisticated French lady. She was also stunning during the gown competition and we all ate our words when we said that she was deserving to be in the Top 10 than her predecessor. Maybe this would happen with Miss Panama.

Second Lt. Oxana Fedorova put her good looks to use for a good cause yesterday.

The Russian beauty, who was crowned Miss Universe 2002 in May, signed autographs for shoppers and fans who lined up at the recently opened Les Ailes de la Mode shopping mall downtown.

She was there to promote a raffle of the Fondation Les Ailes de la Mode to support handicapped and underprivileged children.

The winners of the draw could get a dream home in Candiac sur le Golf with all expenses paid for five years, said Paul Delage Roberge, owner of Les Ailes de la Mode, and all proceeds from the draw go to a long list of children's charities,

"Oxana is helping us to raise money for the foundation," Delage Roberge said. "It's a very good cause. In the last four years we have raised close to $5 million."

Globetrotting Campaign

Working for good causes is nothing new for the stunning, green-eyed 24-year-old brunette, who since her crowning has been on a global tour on an anti-HIV/AIDS campaign. She's a goodwill ambassador for the Candlelight Memorial, an organization promoting HIV awareness worldwide.

Her globetrotting mission has taken her from the HIV ward of the Nyumbani Children's Home in Nairobi, Kenya, to the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia.

Fedorova, a postgraduate law student who also teaches civil law to the cadets of St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of the Interior, a police academy, patiently signed a neverending stack of her pictures as dozens of people lined up for autographs.

The scene at the glitzy mall had the feel of something between a book signing and a Christmas lineup of excited children waiting to sit on Santa's lap.

If she were in Russia, Fedorova could have easily played the traditional role of the Russian Santa's granddaughter, Snegurochka, who always accompanies him.

Fedorova, a native of the ancient northern Russian city of Pskov, greeted everybody with a well-rehearsed Miss Universe smile that got a bit bigger each time her fans struggled to tell her something in Russian.

During a short break in Delage Roberge's office after the signing, Fedorova admitted that the crazy pace of her public appearances was starting to get to her.

"I've been on the road for the last two and a half months," Fedorova said. "I really want to go home. This my last trip."

How does it feel to be the most beautiful woman in the world? "I feel it when I come home absolutely exhausted," Fedorova said, laughing.

And she doesn't think about it very much anyway, she said. "I have too much on my mind to think about it."

At home she has to finish her PhD thesis in civil law and her boss wants her back in a classroom to teach police cadets, Fedorova said.
