Maoism Moves Over for Miss World in China

BEIJING (Reuters) - In China's Communist heyday, when Chairman Mao was at the helm, the only models anyone dared to celebrate were model factory workers and farmers.


But Maoism has since been supplanted by an unswerving faith in market economics, and drab Mao suits by haute couture, and the country is now nuts for supermodels and beauty queens.


Next month, China hosts the 2003 Miss World (news - web sites) competition, putting the world's most populous country officially on the beauty pageant map.


The 110 beauties vying for the Miss World tiara flew in to Beijing on Tuesday for a few days of photo ops on the Great Wall and in the Forbidden City ahead of the December 6 contest in Sanya, a resort on the semi-tropical island of Hainan.


"Miss World in China. Why not?" a Chinese commentator under the pseudonym "100% Cantonese" said on an online message board.


"I am going to beautiful tropical Hainan island for that event, I hope to meet one of those queens on the beach and invite her to a Cantonese dinner."


Until recently, beauty pageants were banned in China as heretical expressions of bourgeois decadence.


During the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, women who used make-up could be branded counter-revolutionaries. Now, body image is a preoccupation of choice among urban youth.


Fashion show catwalks have popped up in malls and in front of department stores nationwide. Billboards advertising beauty products and name-brand fashions are everywhere.


Calling 2003 "the first pageant year in China," the Web site of the Communist Party's sober-minded mouthpiece, the People's Daily, said the Miss International competition would be held in China next year.


"The craze in pageants is, on one hand, due to people's nature to pursue beauty, and social and economic development makes it possible for this pursuit and enriches its contents," the People's Daily Web site said.


"On the other hand, under the market economy, pageants become a medium, and the beauty economy is prospering."


It said 75 percent of online respondents to a questionnaire by popular Web sites Sina.com and Sohu.com supported China's participation in international pageants. Twenty-seven percent saw them as "a demand for the development of the market economy."


The People's Daily Web site, www.people.com.cn, even said pageants were part of China's history, but stopped short of saying it invented them -- like gunpowder, compasses and noodles.


"Beauty contests among common Chinese people originated from the prostitution circle. There was 'flower board' evaluating prostitutes dating back to the Xining period (1068-1077) of North Song Dynasty (960-1127)," it said.

But after the Communists took power in 1949, pageants were banned and China did not enter the Miss World competition, which started two years later, until 2001.

Even with official sanction, the transition to a beauty contest-friendly China has not been all smooth.

Last year, police in southern China raided an auditorium during the Miss China contest saying the organizers did not have a permit.

The pageant was quietly allowed to continue and the winner, Zhuo Ling, went on to become second runner-up at the Miss Universe (news - web sites) finals in Puerto Rico.

note: most of the time these news writers always get info about pageants mixed up. But it seems this one really did his homework.

Miss World is a political pageant that revolves around the hands of time.

It can be remembered that in November of 1995, then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin was gunned down in the streets during a sortie. Days later, Miss Israel Miri Bohadana made it to the Top 5 of Miss World... If you followed that pageant closely, you would know that even if you close your eyes, you'd find at least 10 or even 20 other girls who were more deserving of Miss Israel to make it, at least to the Top 10.

JENSIE_G: I was really shocked to hear that Turkey has been bombed twice by terrorists. My heart goes out to those who are affected.

Turkish cities, unlike other Middle Estern cities, has a vibrant city life. Here in Singapore, they often show Turkish tourism advertisments on TV and I can tell you it's a really beautiful country. Now they have stopped showing it since the bombings.

I'm not sure about the rest but I think Tugba(sp.) is beautiful. I saw some pics of MIss Israel 95 and yes, she didn't stand out. But I don't think it will be the same for Tugba as she is a well-deserved contestant who can make it far even without the politics.

Miss World 'Beach Beauty' Finalists

Aside from competition for a scholarship, the talent award, the actual competition and so forth, there was an interesting sub-contest being held on Wednesday for the title of Miss World Beach Beauty. There are a number of new awards being introduced this year, such as the People's Choice (Combination of Web/Phone votes, and the re-introduction of Miss Photogenic, etc. but this particular award was chosen by Julia Morley, a Chinese specialist and 5 other British/European judges based on the outdoor photography, with an emphasis on covering all the continents. In the end, the chosen delegates were from:

Philippines, Ireland, Ethiopia, Uruguay, New Zealand, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Jamaica and Bolivia These ten paraded on a ramp to music wearing their designer swimwear, as the other girls watched from the sidelines. The final assessment will be used to choose the winner, which will have no bearing on the actual result of the pageant.

Hello everyone! I just finished watching "You Decide" here in Singapore (they showed at 7pm on a local channel here). Well, the show was pretty boring. It was obvious that the show was made last minute.

There were a lot of spelling mistakes in the captions. Look out for that!

Anyway, the show is for 1.5hours. One of the 'fast tracker' awards is Beach Olympics. How crazy is that??

Miss Disappointed: Armenia's beauty rep short of cash for Miss World chance

She may be Miss World in the hearts of her national fans, but Miss Armenia Lusine Tovmasyan will miss out on a chance to prove her beauty in the international competition unless she gets $12,000 fast.

When the teenager was crowned August 28, Armenia's deputy minister of Culture and Youth Affairs (and president of "Miss Armenia" national agency), Karen Aristakesyan announced:

"This year Armenia has an exceptional opportunity to participate in the 'Miss World' beauty contest".

But contestants for the Miss World pageant were due to be in Shanghai, China November 8. Instead, Miss Armenia is still in Yerevan -- $12,000 short of the required entry fee -- and the deputy minister is saying something very different

"I didn't think that it would be impossible to find the money in Armenia," Aristakesyan said Wednesday. "I applied to about 30 people, but no result."

Aristakesyan appealed to Miss World organizers and they agreed to extend the fee deadline until November 26 for the December 6 competition.

The 17-year old Miss Armenia is devastated by the turn of events, as she learned of the financial shortcomings only a day before she was supposed to leave.

"I had my luggage packed by the 7th of November and I was in the mood for departure," she says. "And all of a sudden, just before the departure I was phoned and told that I was not going."

The beauty of the year instead is still attending classes at Interlingua Linguistic University, trying to avoid the curious questions: "When are you leaving?" and "Aren't you going to participate?"

"I wish I was told a little earlier that there are financial difficulties. I wouldn't so much dispose myself to leaving. A couple of weeks ago I went to the embassy and got my entrance visa, and we were trying to solve the problem of dresses, but the organizers did not tell me that they can't pay the small membership fee."

But what may seem "small" to a teenager with dreams of world acclaim, is quite another matter for organizers. Their entire Miss Armenia 2003 pageant was produced for a budget of $15,000.

Her apparent absence from Miss World comes as especially hard news for Lusine, as she has already been bypassed for a chance to compete in the Miss Europe competition last week in France.

Armenia was represented there by Anush Grigoryan, who was runner-up to Lusine in the Miss Armenia pageant.

Expecting to send Lusine to Shanghai, organizers here sent Anush to the competition, where that entry fee was just $400. (The total cost of her trip was $5,000.) Anush was not among Miss Europe winners.

Jury member of Miss Armenia 2003 pageant, Vilen Galstyan, thinks that Lusine has good chances for success at Miss World, and that it would have been be more reasonable not to participate in Miss Europe to save the money.

The deputy minister defended the decision to send a contestant to Miss Europe, saying that the $5,000 still would not have been enough for the Miss World expenses.

Aristakesyan says he is busy trying to come up with the money, because if Armenia does not participate in the contest this year, the organization of Miss World will not take Armenia seriously in future pageants.

"They will probably not take away our participation license, which was very difficult to get. But it will be really embarrassing. We represent a country" says Aristakesyan.

Lusine's application was sent to the Miss World organizers and according to the pageant website (http://www.santabanta.com/contest.asp) she is in the lineup for the title. But the website may have to be edited unless $12,000 appears before Wednesday.

While the organizers try to find the membership fee for participation in Miss World, the disappointed beauty every day reads the conditions presented by Miss World for the competition. The rules say each participant should have 30 cocktail and 20 evening dresses (each dress costs at least $150-200), shoes of the same quantity, bathing suits, etc.

"The funniest point is where it is mentioned (in the competition guidelines) that: 'If you are coming from your country by plane, and it is possible for the luggage to get lost, make sure that the participant will have enough money to buy everything necessary from here'," says Lusine. "If I had that much money I would pay the membership fee and participate with only one dress."
