Miss Singapore World 2003 will be crowned tonight in M Hotel.

Miss Singapore World franchise has been bought over by Metromedia Promotions which also organises Manhunt International.

The event seems to be bigger than MSU. The prizes for the winner total up about S$30,000!! The only thing which is lacking is that it is not being televised.

JENSIE_G: Actually, it's in her name. Kanmani is an Indian name. She could be half Indonesian, half Indian, just like her predecessor, Sharon Chintamani. Chintamani is an Indian name also. There are a lot of people like them here.

Another possibility is that they could be Indonesian Hindu. That could be the reason for having "Hindu" Indian last names.

Miss World jets in to Australia

The woman deemed the world's most beautiful, reigning Miss World Azra Akim, has arrived on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in preparation for the crowning of Miss World Australia on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Turkish beauty, who flew in from London, will crown the Australian winner from 32 finalists.

Miss World Australia managing director Peter Michael said Ms Akim's presence was a strong sign of support from the international body for Australia's bid to host next year's world final.

The former model, who has lived in Holland most of her life, will be special guest at a number of charity events on the Sunshine Coast and will visit Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo with the Australian finalists.

Ms Akim said the past 12 months had been an exciting whirlwind and she hoped other women would embrace the opportunities that competitions like Miss World offered.

"They (contestants) should just be themselves and enjoy it but don't think it's the most important thing in the world - there are more important things in life," she said.

"It's just a good opportunity for a young woman to have a chance to see things and learn."

Hey did you guys saw Phoenix Channel (if I'm not wrong) 2 days ago? They showed this show where on the stage it was written "Miss Chinese Universe Pageant". Since the show was in Mandarin, I did not know what they were talking about.

But in that show, only the awards were given out and after that, about 10 girls out of a group which had approx. 40 girls were told to come forward and take their positions on the front of the stage. Then the show ended.

I have a strong feeling that this might be a preliminary to the Miss China Universe Pageant. I did not know why it's named "Miss Chinese Universe".

BTW, I saw this show very late at night. Around 1 or 2am.

From a field of 36 candidates, they were trimmed down to just 18 last October 4th. These finalists will now go on to compete for the Belleza Nacional Honduras 2003 crown in November 8, Saturday.

Winner will represent Honduras in Miss Universe 2004 set for May in Quito, Ecuador.

THE government has hijacked the Miss Zimbabwe beauty contest and plans to use the pageant to promote Zimbabwe's tattered international image, it has been learnt.

Sources said the Department of Information and Publicity in the President's Office and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism have joined forces to take over the hosting of the troubled Miss Zimbabwe beauty contest, and want to use it to prop up Zimbabwe's battered international image.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has however told StandardPlus that it has not pledged any funds to Miss Zimbabwe.

The annual beauty pageant, which was supposed to have been held last month, has now been postponed to February 28, next year.

Crispen Sachikonye, a Miss Zimbabwe trust member, told StandardPlus that they were waiting for the go ahead from government before starting to organise the event.

"The whole thing is now in the hands of the government, since we cannot raise funds for hotel bookings. We tried the Harare International Conference Centre where the cost was about $5,5m and we felt if we spent that much then the Trust would not get much for charity.

"Government's coming in will see an improvement of the tourism industry hence their decision to take over the beauty pageant," said Sachikonye.

The beauty contest had earlier been postponed to this weekend. It has also emerged that among many problems that the trust is facing is failure to raise funds for the show.

However, Rudo Boka, another member of the Miss Zimbabwe Trust, said she was not aware of government's involvement.

"I cannot confirm things I do not know. Since I am a civilian (and) not a member of government I do not know anything about it. What I simply know are the marketing strategies that were tabled by the government to enhance the growth of the tourism sector," said Boka.

Boka said the Miss Zimbabwe Trust would be happy to get any form of assistance.

"What we are saying is that the trust is not closing its doors to any kind of donations that will come along," said Boka.

Contrary to what Sachikonye said, Boka claimed that the Miss Zimbabwe Trust had enough money to fund the pageant.

StandardPlus failed to reach the Secretary for the Department Information and Publicity, George Charamba, who is said to be representing the government in the Miss Zimbabwe charade.

Co-hosting the Miss Zimbabwe finals would not be the first time that the two ministries were involved in fruitless efforts to spruce up Zimbabwe's image.

The two ministries jointly launched a musical campaign "Come to Victoria Falls" in South Africa to promote tourism recently. The widely publicised exercise was a flop, say South African tourism experts.

Media invited to cover Miss World contest

HAIKOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- A total of 108 Chinese and foreign journalists have been invited to cover the 53rd Miss World competition, which is to be held in Sanya City, Hainan Province, from Dec. 6 to 8.

An information center is being built to accommodate the media, said a spokesman for the pageant organizers.

In addition to China's media giants like Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily and CCTV, foreign media, such as the BBC and NHK, were also invited.

It is the first such event to be held in China and a new step in China's opening to the outside world. In the late 1980s, a number of beauty contests were held in some areas and a failed attempt was made to organize a national pageant in 1988.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia- The first ever Miss World Ethiopia (MWE) was chosen yesterday in the final competition held at the Addis Ababa Hilton. Miss Hayat Ahmed Mohammed, age twenty-one, was chosen by a panel of nine international judges as Miss World Ethiopia 2003. Atetegeb Tesfaye and Yordanos Teshager respectively won second and third runner up.

The first of its kind gathering was attended by well over 500 with dignitaries, international judges, cameramen and celebrities encouraging the anticipation and excitement. The spectacular lighting effects put the final touches on the mood that had twenty-five young ladies wondering who among them would have a dream come true.
The crowd seemed to have an inside point of view on the judging with extra applause going to the ladies who eventually made it to the final three. For a country experiencing its first Miss World pageant in the 52 year history of the competition it was a bit hard for some to believe how well it was going.

The first MWE was chosen from hundreds of applicants and finally from a core group of twenty-five young ladies. Over recent weeks Addis Ababa had been abuzz with speculation over who might take the title.
The final twelve were chosen in a closed session on Wednesday with the group going to seven, three and eventually one at the Grand Finale event yesterday. The final seven were: Selamawit Adamu, Emnet Haile, Mister Alemayehu, Tsedey Tsegaye, Hayat Ahmed, Atetegeb Tesfaye and Yordanos Teshager.

With their ages ranging from 18-23 and their height 1.70-1.82 the final seven were asked questions by the judges in front of the audience. The tension began to build as some were asked unexpected questions such as, as, “what kind of flower do you like and why?”

The final question for Hayat was, why should Ethiopia be the capital of Africa to which she explained, the former Emperor’s role as well as the country’s being home to more than 80 nations and nationalities and that it deservers to be the capital.

Miss World Ethiopia Hayat Ahmed will be representing Ethiopia in the 53rd Miss World competition that will be held on December 6th of this year on the tropical island of Sanya, China.

Raquel Wilkinson has just been selected to carry our flag at the Miss World Pageant coming up next month, and last week a glitzy function was held to launch the 2004 Miss Barbados Universe show scheduled for the Gymnasium on December 6. Yet, despite the recent successes of our contestants at international pageants, Barbadians seem to have become indifferent towards the local shows aimed at selecting representatives for these events.

In the mid-to-late ’80s, the Miss Barbados Universe Beauty Pageant was a “big thing” in Barbados. It seemed to captivate the Barbadian public as much as the Pic-O-De-Crop Finals with regard to speculation over the winner before the show, and arguments over whether the eventual winner deserved her title. The show also attracted major corporate sponsorship from companies such as Harris Paints, Courts and C.O. Williams, who did their part to ensure that the girls remained in the public eye by using them in commercials and some of their community service events. As a result, by the time the show came around, everyone knew the contestants and that made for a more exciting and interesting package.

However, after controversy broke out that resulted in the queen and her runners-up returning their prizes in 1988, the show disappeared for a while and since its return it has never had the kind of hype it enjoyed back then. Why?

There are several possible reasons. Over the last 15 years, and especially within the last five or so, there has been a wide variety of beauty shows in Barbados all year round. In any given year, the Miss Barbados shows selecting contestants for the big international pageants have to compete with the various Bikini shows, Miss Holetown, Miss Tropical Paradise, Miss Crop Over, community and parish pageants and Miss Teen Barbados. In more recent times, it also has had to grapple with novelty shows such as Mr. Slim and Handsome, Miss Senior Barbados and Miss Big and Beautiful. It is also quite common to see the same girls popping up in more than one pageant every year. In other words, there is no incentive to follow a major beauty show if at least three of the contestants evoke the response “Oh no, not her again!” or “Why doesn’t she get a life?” because they have appeared in at least three shows every year for the past three years and failed to place.

In many cases the promoters of the smaller pageants, and in more recent times, even major ones such as Miss Barbados, have also been operating on limited budgets and as such have not been able to put on classy-looking, high quality productions. Lots of shows start late, have all kinds of technical glitches, guest stars are not very exciting or interesting and in some cases the queen does not even have a “throne” to sit on at the conclusion.

Now that some of the shows have introduced talent sections, that has also created problems because some routines have not been very convincing, almost as though the contestant had to “find a talent fast” to get into the show. I suppose it goes back to the limited budgets again, but what tends to happen is that we hear a major national pageant is coming up about two or three weeks before the fact, and often not enough is done to highlight the girls taking part. Apart from interviews on “Mornin’ Barbados” and one or two radio stations the week of the show itself, no one really sees the contestants. And because there are so many contests, often featuring some of the same girls, when a winner is announced, it really is of no significance to the average person. It is “just another beauty show”, as opposed to something that can put us in the international spotlight, as it did two years ago when Stephanie Chase won the Talent segment at the Miss World show.

It also does not help that as Ian Webster said this year, Barbados has become “a nation of shows” and there are so many events competing for the consumer’s dollar. So in order for a major beauty show to truly captivate the attention of a national audience, it has to go the extra mile and give them a high quality production in every sense. The upcoming Miss Barbados Universe Pageant scheduled for the Wildey Gymnasium is promising just this, so we will just have to wait and see how that works out.

China is getting ready for possibly the biggest event that has ever been held in its borders. It indeed looks as if Miss World will finally manage to gather 100+ contestants. Meanwhile, construction on the Miss World Crown of the Beauty, the 5,000-7,000 capacity stadium being built for the pageant, is nearing completion for the final event. The 5-star Sheraton Sanya Resort will serve as host hotel for the contestants.

Itinerary: The girls will first arrive to Hong Kong on November 8th-9th, possibly because this year London will be taken out of the picture altogether. Hong Kong, a former British territory now under Chinese control, is an important financial center in the world and served as host city to Miss World 1989, the first time the final of Miss World was held outside of London. There, they will participate in some introductory activities, galas, welcomings and so forth.

Only a few days later, it will be on to the central Chinese city of Xi'an, a city most well-known for the famous Qin Terra-cotta Warriors & Horses Army. However, the city is simply a historically rich center, as it was the capital to twelve Chinese dynasties. Another charity dinner and gala will commence the visit, which will end when the girls travel on to Shanghai from the 16th-18th, now one of the world's largest cities. On top of being a major center for business, it also houses some of the best shopping, dining and entertainment experiences in all of China. A major Chinese charity group is organizing a special gala for the girls to participate in, as well as a visit to an orphanage, the grand Shanghai Theater and the city museum. There will also be a special fashion event.

On November 18th, the girls will travel to Beijing, China's capital and cultural and communication center. The city houses the famous Forbidden City, several major temples and state parks, and just nearby is the world-reknowned Great Wall of China. There will be plenty of pre-tapings, events and leisure for the girls in the first few weeks of their stay.

In the last couple of weeks of the pageant, the girls will finally fly into Sanya and be officially welcomed, soon beginning intense rehearsals for the pageant in the final week of the event for the December 6th telecast.

The latest about Miss World 2003

Hey guys here are some exclusive information. MW2003 organizers, Azra Akin and Julia Morley held a press conference with the Chinese press 2 days back. One of my Chinese friends, who happens to be a pageant fan too, came across an article from this press conference. Here are some of the info:

For the final night of MW2003, the cost of the cheapest ticket for the audience is USD$280, and the most expensive is USD$2,000. Proceeds from these tickets will go to charity, according to Julia Morley.

Here's a funny one. Azra Akin mentioned that she has to wear water proof makeup on the final night. This left the press members confused! When asked why, Azra mentioned she can't bear to part with the crown and the title, and she had the most unforgettable experience in her life. So sad...:(

The contestants will be judged based on 18 different categories, where 9 of them are beauty-oriented & the other 9 wisdom-oriented. This was not further evaluated.

1,600 out of about 7,000 tickets, for the final night have already been sold out.

There will be some VVVIP tables which will serve dinner, which I personally think it's a bad idea.

PHONEIX Channel will be broadcasting the pageant non-stop for about 6 hours on 6th December 2003 which includes from pre show, then final competition, then more gossips, behind the scenes. You guys have this channel right?

LATEST!!:109 countries have confirmed their attendance for participation in Miss World 2003.

Former Miss Guyana World winners Olive Gopaul and Odessa Phillips and MTV 14/65 news presenter Joylyn Perreira are among 26 young ladies from across Guyana hoping to win the chance to represent Guyana at Miss Universe 2004, to be held in Ecuador.

Head of Miss Guyana Universe, Odinga Lumumba, said when all the girls are revealed on November 15th, they will prove to be "some of the most beautiful women this country possesses".

The pageant will be held on December 27th to provide the winner enough time to prepare for Miss Universe.

"We want to cultivate a product that can win Miss Universe, and at the minimum place in the finals", Lumumba told reporters.

There should be no hesitation in saying that Ms. Olive Gopaul has a distinct advantage to win the local pageant and go on to Miss Universe, as she was a strong contender at Miss World in 2001, placing among the top 10 on the betting houses list, and winning the "Woman of Substance" award from internet's best pageant portal, Global Beauties.

Her popularity in Guyana is beyond question, and she would be following in the footsteps of queens from around the world who compete in international pageants more than once.

Miss Nigeria, for example, was a finalist at the Miss Universe pageant in 2001 and went on to represent her country at Miss World the very year and won.

As for Ms. Phillips, she did not make much of a mark at Miss World as far as the publicity went, and her popularity at home has not been good either.

However, the competition between Ms. Phillips and Ms. Gopaul should make money for Lumumba, especially since reports are that the two have not been "queenly" with each other.

Ms. Perreira, who presents MTV 14/65's court round up in the evenings, has never been in pageantry. However, she definitely has "the presence" that pageant pundits look for, and once she flaunts her charisma and charm, it's my bet that she'll definitely have the edge even over Ms. Phillips.

The delegates will go into training for November 1st.

Again this year, Lumumba has chosen to expose the intelligence of the delegates live on national television, even though this brought last year's delegates tremendous embarrassment when they slipped up, and this also dampened the enthusiasm of those at home.

The intelligence segment of international beauty pageants, including Miss Universe, is usually held behind closed doors.

The swimsuit competition has been scheduled for December 21st, at the Splashmins Fun Park and Resort.

Lumumba is promising international artistes for his pageant and told reporters he is trying to get the reigning Miss Universe Amelia Vega to visit.

This means they are now purely devoted to selecting the Swedish representatives for Miss Universe. :)

Beauty Queen's wedding details leaked :wow:

Beauty queen and Ms Universe runner up Miriam Quiambao had hoped to keep her private life separate from her showbiz career. Her hopes were dashed when details of her wedding leaked out last week.

Miriam is set to marry her Italian boyfriend Claudio Rondinelli. The two will tie the knot on January 9, 2004. The ceremony will be held at the Holy Rosary Church in Boracay Island in Aklan. A reception will follow at 5 p.m. at the famous Friday's Boracay Beachfront.

The bride will be dressed in an original creation by Rhett Eala. The dress is part of the tropical motif of the entire wedding. Overall attire for those present will be the usual beach attire.

Rhett, however, plays a far more special role than just the designer of the bride's dress. It was Rhett who introduced the couple to one another more than a year ago. Claudio is an Italian businessman based in Hong Kong. He is a part owner of Hub Limited, a company that produces souvenir and promotional items for various international clients. He also owns Di Vino, a wine bar and restaurant in Hong Kong.

Miriam and Claudio met each other at the Manila Peninsula Hotel. They were engaged last September 13, 2003.

After the wedding, the couple will fly to Florence, Italy for their honeymoon. From there, they plan to settle in Hong Kong. Miriam will not leave showbiz completely. She expects to fly in regularly to fulfill some of her remaining commitments. Fans of her regular show, Extra! Extra! will miss her though. Miriam has resigned from the show.

Arrival of Delegates in Hong Kong

Nov. 10
Charity activities of the delegates

Nov. 11
Delegates will be received at the international airport in Sanya, Hainan Island.

Nov. 12
Official press presentation in Sanya

Nov. 13 - 16
Visit to the city of Xian, where the delegates will visit ancient palaces and temples. They will also participate in charity activities.

Nov. 16 - 18
Visit to Shanghai. The delegates will tour the Great Theater of Shanghai and the city museum. They will also participate in a fashion show for the benefit of different charities.

Nov. 18 - 22
Visit to Beijing. The delegates will also tour the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China. A banquet will be set in their honor afterwards.

Nov. 22 - 23
The delegates will return to Sanya for a festival.

Nov. 23 - Dec. 5
The delegates will get to know more of Hainan by visiting national parks.

Dec. 5
General rehearsal

Dec. 6
Coronation of Miss World 2003. A Coronation Ball will be held in her honor afterwards.

Dec. 7
Return of the delegates to their countries of origin.

Phoebe Monjane will be representing Zimbabwe in MW2003. Her name's is in the Miss World website but no photos!

Makuena Mpinane Lepolesa will be representing Lesotho. Same situation here, no photos. For those who are wondering where Lesotho is, it is situated right in the middle of South Africa. Check your atlas!

Kristiina Gabor will be representing Estonia.
