The Philippines is number 7 in GB's Grand Slam Ranking as of June 2003. It seems hard to believe considering that for the past 10 years, we haven't been that lucky. But it's true, thanks to our string of Miss International placing in the 90s, 2 Miss Universe placings, 3 Miss World placings and our Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality (Miss Friendship, Miss Personality) awards. But if awards did not have a weight on the success of countries in pageants, just placings alone, I doubt if we could still be in the top 10.

I'm disappointed with the results. The judges only chose the winner (Guan Qi) coz of her height and intelligence.

The runner-ups are better, IMHO.

Kim is a native of Atlanta Georgia and presently makes her home in New York city. Kim has been a professional model since the age of fifteen. Her modeling career has taken her all over the world from the Runways of Milan to the television studios of Los Angeles where she was runner up in the Star Search spokes-model competition. Kim's ambition is to further her modeling career while embarking on an acting one. Since it is the main goal of the Miss World United States organization to support the goals and aspirations of its winners, the "priceless" prizes were custom designed for Kim and she will be helped along in her ambitions by being introduced to a team of top Hollywood professionals including Management, a leading agency for commercial representation, print, publicist, photographers and lawyers as well as vocal and acting coaches just for starters. The next immediate goal for Kim however is China, where she will compete with the very best representatives from around the world. She will represent the former soviet republic at the Miss World 2003 pageant in Sanya, China.

Qingdao bids to host 2005 Miss Universe Contest

With the approval of the State Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shandong Province will bid to host 2005 Miss Universe Contest. If the province wins the bidding, the event will be held in Qingdao, Qingdao newsnet reported.

Miss Universe Contest is the world`s largest competition of beauties. Shandong successfully organized 2003 Miss Universe China venue contest in Jinan in April of this year. 2004 Miss Universe China venue competition will be also held in the city. (SD News)

i guess 1982 was the first time. when the pageant was held in lima peru (where maria isabel lopez competed, odette scrooby of south africa was robbed of a top 5 slot due to a computer error and karen baldwin of canada bagged the title). btw, karen baldwin has a museum of her miss universe and miss canada memorabilia in london, ontario, canada near toronto (i visited it in 1989 when i was in grade school). sana may museum tayo somewhere in araneta coliseum where our pageant winners will put on display their gowns, swim wear, crowns, photos and other important stuff.

meron dating museum (sort of) for bb. pilipinas. it was located at nayong pilipino. if i'm not mistaken, myrna panlilio-borromeo was responsible for that.

again, if my memory serves me right all the barraza and pitoy gowns our beauty queens wore in the big 3 are housed at the colombian embassy in q.c. property kasi yun ng bpci.

Pageant proves too costly for city

Miss USA came courting, and Nashville rejected her — again.

On Monday afternoon, Butch Spyridon, president of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau, officially told Miss USA officials that the city wasn't interested in hosting the 2004 pageant.

''The cost associated with hosting the program is just too great against other budgeted commitments, and the late March dates make it very difficult to secure the necessary sleeping rooms,'' Spyridon wrote in an e-mail to Paula Shugart, president of pageant organizer Miss Universe Organization.

Miss Universe is a joint venture between New York billionaire real estate tycoon Donald Trump and television network NBC. Shugart couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.

Spyridon said the pageant is a great event and would be a great opportunity for another city.

Pageant officials outlined the parameters for hosting the event about two weeks ago in a meeting with the bureau.

The pageant hosting rights carried a price tag of $600,000, a figure Miss USA officials have said is negotiable.

In addition, it sought 2,900 nights' worth of rooms over three weeks, starting at 75 and increasing to 250 by the last week. Meals and cars were on the list, as well.

Total costs could have exceeded $1 million. Pageant officials have said it was all negotiable.

But the CVB was reticent from the start, primarily because of the rights cost.

''We've turned this down two other times'' for the same reason, Spyridon said.

San Antonio hosted the Miss USA pageant last year. Its convention and visitors bureau is part of city government and collects all of the city's hotel/motel tax to fund its $14 million budget. It has a reserve fund set aside for attracting such events as Miss USA, Spyridon said.

The Nashville bureau's $8 million budget is mostly generated by a portion of Metro's hotel/motel tax, and there is no reserve. Similar organizations around the country generate additional revenue through membership, which the Nashville bureau doesn't do.

Spyridon said that may change under the restructured organization, which separated from the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce this summer. Its new board is looking at how Nashville needs to market itself.

''Through our strategic plan, we'll be addressing finances, revenue specifically,'' Spyridon said.

I read in Joseph Vitug's article that this year's Miss Venezuela 2003 Contest is a scaled-down affair, held in a TV studio instead of the Poliedro, with less of those bloated musical numbers and the running time would not be the usual 4 hours. I don't know if this is indeed true but anyhow, its not really the venue that's important.. but rather the tradition and prestige that Miss Venezuela title has. :)

The gowns for Miss Venezuela was quite average. My favourite gowns from the first 10 were Miss Falcon & Miss Lara & one more lady who wore a red gown but I did not notice which state.
