Even though it has been stated that the Australian final will take place between 18th and 24th of October, the MWA Calendar has stated the finals will take place, on 22nd October 2003 at the Novotel Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast.

Australia is bidding to host Miss World 2004 , late next year. It has not been clearly stated which city is bidding to host the event.

They believe that the international acclaim and success the Sydney Olympics and the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Melbourne places Australia in strong contention to win the bid.

Miss Taiwan said not interested in entering 'Miss China' contest

China is inviting Taiwanese women to compete in its Miss China beauty pageant, but the island's top beauties aren't interested in the contest, which requires them to "passionately love the motherland" and "support the Communist Party," a newspaper reported yesterday.

The reigning Miss Taiwan, Liu An-na, said she was interested in competing in China's contest, which crowns a winner on December 28, until she found out about the criteria for being politically correct, the mass-market Apple Daily reported.

"I very passionately love Taiwan," the newspaper quoted Liu as saying. "Why would I have to endorse the Communist Party and the motherland. There's no way I could participate."

Although China's Communist government has never ruled Taiwan, Chinese leaders insist that the island, 160 kilometers off the mainland's coast, is part of their country. Beijing wants the two sides to unify and often tries to treat Taiwanese as if they are citizens of China.

The Apple Daily said that women from the Chinese-ruled territories of Hong Kong and Macau have also been invited to compete in the contest.

Another Taiwanese, Beverly Chen, who represented Taiwan in last June's Miss Universe contest in Panama, said she doesn't plan to compete, the newspaper said.

"I have no desire to participate. I'll let someone else have the opportunity," she was quoted as saying.

Chen got caught up in the China-Taiwan rivalry during the Miss Universe contest when China pressured the organizers to insist that she not wear her "Miss Taiwan" sash on stage. She was forced to wear a sash that said, "Miss Chinese Taipei," the same title Taiwan uses when it competes in the Olympics.

China is highly sensitive about the names Taiwan uses when participating in international events. Beijing fiercely opposes any titles that make it appear that the island is an independent country.

Chen told reporters in Panama that there were no hard feelings between her and the Miss China contestant, Wei Wu. Chen, who studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, said she often helped interpret for Wei, who does not speak English.

Neither was in the final group of five finalists.

For decades, China refused to hold beauty pageants or send contestants to the major competitions, such as Miss Universe. But in 2002, China sent its first delegate to the Miss Universe pageant in 51 years.

This year, China plans to host the Miss World contest on December 6 in the city of Sanya on Hainan Island in the South China Sea.

The Miss World Kenya beauty contest, which kicked off in July, has now reached its home stretch.

Thirty-five beauty queens from various provinces will vie for the national crown on September 12 at The Stanley in a glitzy event at which Information and Tourism Minister Raphael Tuju will be guest of honour.


This year's contest has been given a new, spruced-up image to distinguish it from previous ones. It has been given a classier image, as evidenced in the choice of venues and gate charges for the preliminaries and the national event.

VIP tickets for the final will go for Sh3,500 for a three-course executive dinner, while those who want to watch the show only will have to part with Sh1,000.

"In a radical departure from the past and taking cognisance of the intellectual challenge required of the beauty ambassador, we strove to recruit girls with attendant decorum, professionalism and seriousness," says Mrs Terry Mungai, the event organiser.

She says she has received immense support from the government, which has given the contest a lot of weight.

"Though the pageant has been expensive to run, I believe it is worth it," says Mungai, who is also the propreitor of Ashleys Hair and Beauty Academy.

Her production manager, Christopher Kirwa, commends all the girls who have so far taken part in the contest. "Those who have lost have done so honourably and are still ready to work with us," he says.

It is notable that gospel music featured prominently throughout the provincial build-up contest. At the national event, the venue will resonate with the sounds of KORA and Kisima Awards winner Henrie Mutuku, Kisima nominee Roughtone, KORA nominee Kayamba Afrika and acapella masters Cheche Group, last year's Safaricom Star Search winners.

Initially, over 300 girls had registered for the race for the fairest beauty in the land, but only 102 qualified to participate in the preliminaries, 17 in each province.

"We chose the loveliest, and the judges will have a very hectic time choosing the best of them," says Mungai.

Thousand Oaks jeweler designs pageant rings

Tania Cole of Thousand Oaks has been designing jewelry with a crown motif for beauty pageants for 14 years and as the official jeweler for the Miss California, USA, pageant for the past 11 years. But she recently got the jewel in the crown.

"This year, the Miss Universe organization asked us to make the ring for the Miss USA competition," Cole said. The ring she designed was almost an eternity band style in a crown design, with just a small straight area to size the ring, she said.

"The design was entirely up to me so I could use my creative process," she said. "I had already visualized what Miss USA would wear."

The ring, 14-karat gold and studded with diamonds, is valued at $7,000, she said. The ring was presented to Susie Castillo, Miss Massachusetts, USA, when she was crowned Miss USA in May.

Last year, Cole designed a ring commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Miss California, USA, pageant. She was at this year's state pageant for the presentation at the end of August in Fresno.

Cole considers it an honor and privilege to be asked to design the rings. And, as a sponsor, she gets a front-row seat at the pageant.

"It's really neat to observe and be part of it," she said.

Cole's pageant involvement began about 14 years ago when the pageant director for Miss Ventura County, Dee McCree, asked her if she could design crown jewelry. From there, she went on to design rings for Santa Barbara and San Diego county pageants.

Last year she was asked to be the official jeweler for the Miss Nevada and Miss Teen Nevada, USA, pageants, too.

"The pageant director for Delaware asked me to design a ring for them, but I told her I couldn't take on any more," she said.

Cole, a gemologist and goldsmith, owns Jewelry Collections on Thousand Oaks Boulevard. She also designs jewelry for area customers.

Crocodile day for Miss World

SYDNEY has a chance to stage the Miss World contest next year - but the New South Wales captial is not the only city in the running.

An Australian bid, with each state competing for the event, has been put forward, and at this stage it seems Queensland has the advantage.

The Miss World Australia finals will be held on the Sunshine Coast this October, and Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has offered to help out.

Kate Hardiman, spokeswoman for Miss World Australia, said Irwin expressed interest in being a guest judge and is also organising a day for the competitors at his animal park, Australia Zoo.

This year's event, the 53rd of its kind, is to be held in China for the first time in the city of Sanya, located at the southern most tip of Hainan Island south of the mainland.

The pageant starts on November 9 and runs through to the final announcement of Miss World 2003 on December 6.

Well guys, you know about all this confusion abt who is Miss China World and all. So as to avoid further confusion, I approached my Chinese colleague, or rather the Mandarin speaking colleague, to find out what is really happening in Sanya, China.

This was what they told me. after browsing eladies site. JENSIE_G, the lady you had posted on this thread, named QIAO XING, was actually the winner of the modelling contest (remember that there were two winners last year? It seems they decided to hold the modelling contest & the pageant on different occasions). I was also confused by the crown on her, which makes us think she is Miss China World. But my Chinese colleagues told me, after browsing the eladies site, that the actual pageant is between 20-21 October. Apologies if I had made any hurtful remarks.

T&T's Miss World 2004 delegate Magdalene Walcott, 21, poses seductively in a promotional photograph by Cyan Studios released yesterday by new Miss World franchise holder, designer Peter Elias. Last evening at Trotters, St Clair, Elias presented Walcott, a former Miss T&T/Universe delegate, as this country's entrant in the Miss World 2004 competition, which takes place in China on December 6.

Even as rumours about trouble over the reign of Miss T&T Universe Faye Alibocus continue to circulate, her former designer introduced T&T's delegate for the Miss World 2004 competition yesterday.

Magdalene Walcott, 21, is a former Miss T&T Universe delegate. She was second runner-up in last year's pageant.

Designer Peter Elias, who is now the franchise holder for the Miss World competition, hosted the reception last night at Trotters restaurant and bar in St Clair.

Elias provided clothing for pageant delegates and designed an evening gown for Alibocus to wear in the Miss Universe competition, held in Panama in May. At the last moment, the Miss T&T Universe franchise holders, CCN's Miss T&T Pageant Company, announced Alibocus would instead wear a design by Heather Jones. Elias left the Pageant Company shortly after. Delegate trainers Adrian Raymond and Alyson Brown also left the company around the same time.

Alibocus placed in the top 10 in the international pageant.

Recent rumours that the company has asked Alibocus to give up her title because she has moved to New York and is unable to fulfil her obligations here remain unconfirmed.

Marcia LaBorde, marketing manager of the company, declined comment once again yesterday. An e-mail to Alibocus on the subject yesterday went unanswered.

The 2004 Miss T&T Universe delegates will be judged this Sunday for Miss Photogenic, Miss Physique and Miss People's Choice.

The judging will take place at Tsunami, in Chaguaramas.
