HANOI (AFP) - A Vietnamese beauty queen has been kidnapped, allegedly by the son of a senior police officer who was upset that she was moving to Britain to begin university there, her mother and reports said.

Pham Thi Mai Phuong, who was crowned Miss Vietnam in September last year, disappeared on August 5 in the northeastern port city of Haiphong while heading home after attending an English class at a language school.

Her mother, Trieu Kim Oanh, said the family had subsequently received threats warning that Phuong could be killed. Most recently the death threats were aimed at the whole family, she told AFP.

According to the state-run Tien Phong newspaper, the 18-year-old beauty was stopped by a group of men who bundled her into a car and drove off.

Her family reported her disappearance to the city's police but Phuong has not been seen or heard from since.

Radio Free Asia, citing a close family source who requested anonymity, said Phuong was kidnapped by a friend, Nguyen Binh Khanh, who did not want her to leave Vietnam for London where she had been awarded a scholarship at Luton University.

Apparently, Khanh, a police officer and son of Haiphong City Police Chief Nguyen Binh Doan, threatened to kill Phuong and then himself if she tried to leave the country, the US-government funded network said.

The Tien Phong, reporting from Haiphong, also said the son of a high-ranking police officer was involved in the case. It did not name Khanh.

An officer at the police department's crime division denied Khanh was involved in the kidnapping. He also said Doan was not available for comment.

Khanh himself could not be immediately contacted. His office told RFA that he was currently on leave from work.

Phuong's mother, Oanh, said she was convinced her daughter had been kidnapped, but was reluctant to talk because of the sensitivity of the case.

"I believe my daughter has been kidnapped but we want to leave the police to do their work," she said.

The family has received no ransom demands, Oanh said, speaking of the panic that has gripped her family over the past week.

"We have received death threats and we are terrified about her fate and what could happen to us.

"This morning at 1:00 am, my husband's life was threatened by a group of men on motorbikes who parked outside our house and said they would kill him," she said.

She did not give any reasons why the threat was made against her husband, Pham Thanh Hung, but observers say it could be linked to his comments to the press.

Tuesday's Tien Phong cited Hung as saying that his daughter's kidnapping was a carefully planned affair. It also reported that Phuong had previously told him about threats she had received from a man the daily named only as "K".

Haiphong, the biggest port in northern Vietnam, is considered one of the country's most crime-ridden cities, where corruption is rife.

Phuong was awarded a scholarship worth over 56,000 US dollars to study for a degree in business management at Luton University, just north of London. She is supposed to start her classes on September 15.

She told reporters late last month she was honored to be able to attend a university abroad but would return to Vietnam after graduation.

HANOI (Reuters) - Miss Vietnam 2002 is missing, but it was not clear if she had been kidnapped, police in the northern Vietnamese port city of Hai Phong said on Tuesday.

"She has disappeared for a week now. We are working on details of the case," said a policewoman in Ngo Quyen District in Hai Phong City.

Witnesses told police that Pham Thi Mai Phuong, 18, had been forced into a van by several young men as she was leaving her English class at a local language school on August 5, said the officer.

Phuong, a high school senior, was catapulted to fame when she won the reinstated national beauty contest last year. She represented Vietnam at the Miss World (news - web sites) contest that was originally held in Nigeria but was moved to london due to protests.

Communist Vietnam had discouraged such competitions for some years as a promotion of undesirable values.

The teenager had recently been awarded a scholarship to study business management at Luton University in England.

Police said it seemed unlikely that Phuong was kidnapped for money as no ransom has been demanded/and Phuong had been allowed to call home to tell her parents she is well.

Phuong's family could not be reached for comment.

High school student Pham Thi Mai Phuong, 18, was crowned Miss Vietnam in September in the communist country's first national pageant in decades.

After taking part in the Miss World contest in London last year, she was awarded a scholarship at the University of Luton in Britain.

But on August 5 she went missing. Her mother claimed a boyfriend had abducted her to keep her from studying abroad.

However, in an open letter published yesterday in a youth newspaper, Ms Phuong said she was vacationing with friends, "travelling and completely safe."

She had been staying in a friend's house.

Ethiopia is to take part in the Miss World Pageant scheduled to take place in Sanya, China, on December 6, this year, according to Gadol Ton, the executive director of the show. It will be doing so far in first time ever.

Registration is already under way for those interested in the contest. Unlike the previous pageants held here, the Miss World Ethiopia pageant will feature in a private preliminary competition before an international panel of judges.

"We want to simulate the same condition that will take place in China. For that reason we have formed an international jury of skilled professionals in their respective fields," Gadol Ton said.

The event will be jointly organized by the Hilton Addis, Dark and Lovely, Alem Creative Arts Center, Phoenix promotion and the Ethiopian Airlines.

More pics of the new Miss Teen USA, she isn't that beautiful (if we are used to Miss USA and Universe standards) , but it seems her beauty prefectly fits the "teen" in Miss Teen USA. Her first runner up was more Miss USA material again, so I doubt Miss Oregon would be lucky in Miss USA.

Lara Dutta stuck in London

Lara Dutta, the Miss Universe might have thanked her stars for carrying with her the card that said that she is Miss Universe. She was on a shoot in London for a Hindi film. Her Tamil film producer who signed her long back wanted her to also attend his shooting of a song with hero Arjun.

The Hindi film unit gave her a ticket back to Mumbai and left after shooting. The Miss Universe who attended the Tamil film shooting too got a ticket from London to Mumbai from the Chennai based producer. In a communication mixup with the travel agent both the tickets to Mumbai was cancelled and money refunded. Lara who turned up in the airport found herself stranded and holding a passport .

She was fined Rs 1 lakh for not holding a return ticket . This was too granted by the immigration in UK because she was holding a identity card of the Miss Universe. However the entire tussle kept her boy friend Kelly Dorje on tenter hooks.

Miss Hong Kong pageant hit by scandals again

This was one of the news placed in the front page of Singapore's daily tabloid, The New Paper. The subtitles were as follows:

On one of the contestant: "Corruption probe on her tycoon dad for allegedly trying to help her win"

About another contestant: "She's accused of openly flaunting her assets"

I have the hard copy of this newspaper article, but it got crumpled on my way home. But no worries, the electric version of the article will be out tomorrow. I will post it up here.

Daddy's girl must win?

The Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant is scandal-plagued as always. This year's hot favourite Selena Lee's father has been accused of using his influence to boost her chances.

SEX, scandal and controversy.

Three words that herald the arrival of yet another Miss Hong Kong pageant.

This annual beauty pageant is plagued by salacious scandal almost every year without fail.

If it's not about contestants being offered the crown in return for sex, then it's about them having their nude photos splashed in tabloids.

There's gossip and controversy again this year, although somewhat different from the past.

So far, the biggest scandal uncovered is linked to hot favourite Selena Lee, 22 (above), whose rich family manufactures calculators.

Her tycoon father was hauled up by the anti-corruption agency a few weeks ago for allegedly abusing his business influence to fan support for his daughter.

WON TWO TITLES
The Canadian-raised undergrad surprised many when she won two titles - Miss Photogenic and Miss Talented - at the semi-finals on Aug 3.

But Selena insisted she had 'no idea' of her father's alleged efforts to drum up support for her.

'My dad didn't tell me anything,' she said.

'Maybe he's happy that I got into the finals, that's why he's asking his friends and relatives to support me.'

Another controversy comes from busty Stephanie Wang, 22, who's the daughter of retired TVB actor Wang Wai.

Her 34D assets have made her a firm favourite with supporters but not with other green-eyed contestants, who have accused her of posing provocatively during the photo shoots, and tarnishing the pageant's reputation.

The sweetie-pie could only tell reporters: 'I hope the men will not just focus on my chest size, but on my whole body as well.'

PAST SCANDALS
The organisers are trying to rebuild a battered reputation after being hit by much-worse scandals in the past.

The 1988 winner, model/actress Michelle Reis, was reportedly 'taken care of' by a tycoon shortly after she won the crown and has been linked to him since.

The now-divorced multi-millionaire was allegedly the same man who threw a million-dollar birthday bash for actress Ada Choi, shortly after she won second place in the 1991 pageant.

Ada, a secondary-school dropout, was also accused last year for falsely reporting her academic qualifications when she took part in the contest.

She denied giving false information and threatened to sue East Week magazine, which was the first to publish the allegation, but did not do so in the end.

NUDE PHOTOS
Fellow finalist Teresa Mak also got hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons.

A day after the pageant, her nude photos were splashed across the newspapers.

But no one beats Chen Anqi, actress and 1996 finalist.

The Hong Kong police arrested her and her husband last year for allegedly kidnapping a Malaysian tycoon's son.

She was acquited last October but her Malaysian husband was found guilty and sentenced to one-year imprisonment and two year's parole early this year.

Then there was 2001 winner, Shirley Yeung, who was bashed by the media for allegedly faking the seriousness of her neck injury before the event when she seemed fine enough to dance freely at the finals.

Such exciting stuff that creates hype and buzz over the event is, however, lacking in this year's event, which explains why the Hong Kong media deemed it a comparatively dull affair.

They also lament the predictability of the pageant, which will be hosted by Eric Tsang and Nat Chan. And the 'tradition' of the winner coming from those who won other titles before the finals.

HOT FAVOURITES
Besides the hot favourites so far mentioned, only two others among the 12 finalists are considered title contenders - Ivy Tam and Rabee'a Yeung, both of whom have voluptuous figures.

These factors have affected the show's ratings and the number of viewers, which have slipped dramatically in recent years.

Maybe pop stars Nicholas Tse, Jordan Chan and Eason Chan, who will be performing at the annual event, can provide the necessary entertainment instead.

The Miss Hongkong pageant 2003 will be shown live on TVBJ (StarHub Ch 48) on Sunday at 7.55pm.

THE Miss Hong Kong pageant still remains an attractive gateway to elusive stardom for many young women even if some people see it as a media circus.

Hundreds in Hong Kong and overseas vie for the title each year in the quest for fame and wealth.

Internationally-acclaimed actress Maggie Cheung (left), the most well-known of them, participated in the 1983 pageant.

Though she came in second, the 39-year-old reigns as Hong Kong's undisputed top actress. Her sterling performances in films like The Soong Sisters (1997) and In The Mood For Love (2001), won her the Hong Kong Film Best Actress awards.

Another famous former Miss Hong Kong is Michelle Reis, 33, who still remains one of the most glamorous model/actresses there.

Besides the pair, there are contestants who have become famous and popular celebrities - Anita Yuen (1990 winner), Ada Choi (1991 2nd-runner-up) and Charmaine Sheh (1997 2nd runner-up).

But for every successful former participant, there are many who have faded into oblivion.

After all, does anyone remember past winners like Halina Tam (1994), Virginia Yung (1997) or Vivian Lau (2001)?

Jensie, walang official word kung bakit Indus pero it seems that Pakistan is competing under the name Indus para hindi maging controversial. This is just based on what some people said about this on message boards, but I do not really know to a certainty. Indus, as in Indus Valley, is present-day Pakistan. It was the name during pre-Islamic Pakistan.

The Miss USA Pageant is courting Nashville for its 53rd annual pageant in 2004. Preliminary talks between the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission and Miss Universe Organization officials have been ongoing. Pageant executives are expected to arrive for further talks in the next few weeks.

The Miss Universe Organization hosts the Miss USA Pageant, the Miss Teen USA Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant.

David Bennett, commissioner of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission, said bringing the pageant to Nashville could cost the city about $1 million but the tradeoff in national attention would more than compensate for the bill.

“It’s a nationwide, 90-minute broadcast,” Bennett said. “The core mind is that it would showcase Nashville in a realm that we are not often noted for — urban, fashion and beauty … It’s glitzy. It’s dramatic and it’s compelling.”

During the pageant, Bennett said, the contestants are featured throughout Nashville at various attractions.

“Then they also give a segment devoted totally just to the city within the show,” Bennett said.

In addition the pageant would hire roughly 60 production people locally for the duration of filming.

Tony Santomauro, vice president of business planning for the Miss Universe Organization, said even though Nashville was a “perfect pageant town” there was “no deal yet” as he has not talked with the Mayor’s Office and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Santomauro and other officials are expected to arrive in Nashville within the month to talk with officials from the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and Butch Spyridon, director of the Nashville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Bennett said he has talked with Spyridon but had not determined anything firm with regards to what kind of deal the city and pageant organizers could strike to make the pageant mutually beneficial. Spyridon was traveling and could not be reached at press time.

“I certainly think that this is worth devoting as much energy as we can to try and make this happen. It’s good for the city and it always boils down to that it’s about money,” Bennett said. “But I think that I find that the pageant organization is willing to work with [us] because they really want to be here.”

Santomauro said NBC, which airs the pageant, had made it clear that Nashville was its city of choice.

“The reason I keep pursuing this is that I know that it would be great for Nashville and I know that the film and entertainment commission understands this project,” said Santomauro. “NBC likes the idea because it’s a sexy city. It’s perfect for what we want. It’s perfect for what the network wants and I think that Nashville can truly benefit.”

The pageant would most likely draw between 9 and 11 million viewers, said Bennett. One way to view the tradeoff, he added, would be to view it the same way one would look at “metering impressions on a pro football game or on a CMA broadcast.

“The girls are here for three weeks before the contest even starts,” Bennett said. “It is one big commercial for the city. In terms of the Miss Universe Pageant, they reach a billion people.”

Bennett said another positive aspect is the “cross pollinization” between country music industry talent and the pageant. Nashville City Paper, TN, 25.08.2003
