ORGANISERS of Miss Tanzania competitions are looking for a funder to support the current Miss Tanzania’s trips upcountry.
This follows reports that various international and local firms are unwilling to support Miss Tanzania during her trips upcountry for community projects.

Hashim Lundenga, the director of Lino International Agency that organises the Miss Tanzania competitions, is disappointed the way various firms have turned down requests to support Miss Tanzania on such trips.

Although firms have been willing to finance actual beauty contests, they are reluctant to donate cash for the beauty queen’s trips upcountry.

For instance, when a Miss Tanzania visits HIV/AIDS victims, none of the relevant international organizations, such as World Health Organisation, respond to requests for support and donations, Lundenga says.

According to him, Tanzanians do not have a tendency of using their celebrities in various activities such as community projects. Some of Tanzania’s development problems could be solved this way, rather than rely upon government or political party officials to do them.

“For example, when we visited Jangwani and Azania Secondary schools in Dar es Salaam in the company of [Miss Tanzania] Angela [Damas], the students were very excited by the presence of Miss Tanzania at their schools, and the opportunity was taken to discuss various pertinent issues.”

Angela exchanged ideas with the students on various issues such as HIV/AIDS, drugs and alcoholism. “ Being a young girl of between 20-22 years herself, Angela has the language that can drive powerful messages to students who are her age mates,” Lundenga explains.

“Visiting beauty queens comfort the society. They give goods and cash as gifts to the needy to make them feel that they are not alone, and that they are all members of the same human race as the rest of us,” Lundenga says.

Miss Tanzania 2001/02, Happiness Magesse, had a lot of social visits during her one-year reign. It will be difficult for Miss Tanzania 2002/03, Angela Damas, to do so because unlike Happiness who was not tied down with salaried employment, Angela is a second-year University of Dar es Salaam student. She is studying sociology.

“Three-quarters of the tours that Happiness made during her reign were to far-flung upcountry parts like Mbinga in Ruvuma region where, among other things, she donated gifts to hospitals.”

Lundenga says the case of Tanzania not performing well at the Miss World contest is a big challenge for the organisers. The Miss Tanzania contests started in 1994. The Miss Tanzania Committee has been receiving different views concerning the event. Most of them have been vehement criticisms.

“The criticism has largely been a claim that beauty contests are a form of hooliganism,” he laments. Organisers have been informing the people through the mass media in an effort to put the venture in its correct perspective. He thinks they are steadily gaining ground in this.

Moreover, he noted, poor performance at the Miss World level is not due to bad preparations. Preliminary preparations for the world event in Tanzania and Kenya are practically at the same level, he says. “But Kenya at least did relatively well last year. The problem with Tanzania is its low level of exposure in international events.”

Another major problem for Tanzania not performing well at the Miss World competition is poor knowledge of the English language in which the contest is run. Even though it is not necessary to use the English language, speaking the national language properly is also a problem.

He cited Miss Tanzania 2002/03 Happiness Magesse who attracted many people.

“Two reporters from South Africa and one from Japan told the organisers of the world event that they had been impressed by ‘the tallest girl from Tanzania,’” Lundenga recalls. “We decided to sit down and do a recap of what had gone wrong. Finally, we found out that English was a problem for Happiness. Before getting on the stage, we suggested that she should use ki-Swahili instead; but she refused.”

At present, the Miss Tanzania Committee is considering to change the system and give the next Miss Tanzania more exposure. In which case, Lundenga says, they are looking forward to participating at the Miss World in 2004, not this year, as they are already late.

“It will be a crash programme, so we are planning towait for the next season.”

Whoever becomes Miss Tanzania 2003/04 will have to attend a six-month course in English as a language as well as current affairs, psychology, table manners, how to interact with people, how to tackle questions, and so forth. The training will be conducted in Kenya or the United Kingdom.

He also says that they cannot manage to participate in the other global event, Miss Universe since the entrance fee is very high Tsh41.4 million (US$40,000).

“We have not performed so well at the Miss World; why should we bother jumping into other things?” he asks.
Pilsner Ice brand is the main sponsor of the event since the year 2001 to date where by the event is better-known as Pilsner Ice Miss Tanzania.

For his part, the brand manager of Pilsner Ice, David Minja, said there are a number of objectives for which Pilsner Ice has been sponsoring the Miss Tanzania beauty contest. One of these is to raise public awareness concerning the Pilsner Ice brand of beer, for it to be accepted by more people. One decent way of doing this is by linking the lager with the Miss Tanzania beauty contest.
The contest is a national image whereby various people - including government officials, politicians, musicians, and others - attend, Minja said.

“Pilsner Ice Miss Tanzania is the only event which has succeeded to get contestants from the grassroots level up. In the recent past, beauty contests have steadily been gaining popularity.”
The other objective is to sample and test the Pilsner Ice brand across the nation.

“We don’t force, or teach, Miss Tanzania contestants to drink our brand,” he says. “But the main target is the masses of people who follow the event in one way or another, who should be given the opportunity to sample the beer - and even get hooked to our brand.”

Joanne, naloka sa 'Mrs. World'


NARIRITO na si Joanne Quintas sa Pilipinas kaya pwede nang ikuwento ang mga naging karanasan niya nang sumali siya sa Mrs. World Contest na ginanap noong Hunyo 23 sa Las Vegas, Nevada.

Noong nasa Amerika siya, tumawag sa amin si Joanne para sabihin na gusto na niyang mag-back out sa naturang contest dahil hindi maganda ang trato sa kanya at sa iba pang mga kandidata.

Malapit na ang pageant night nang tawagan kami ni Joanne kaya pinayuhan namin siya na huwag nang mag-back out para hindi mawalan ng saysay ang pagpunta niya roon.

Besides, pinagmumulta ng contest organizer ng US$1,600 ang mga kandidata na umatras sa contest.

Labag man sa kanyang kalooban, napilitan si Joanne na ituloy ang pagsali dahil nanghinayang siya sa multa na hinihingi ng organizer.

Halos dalawang linggo na namalagi sa isang hotel sa Las Vegas ang 30 candidates ng Mrs. World.

Sa loob ng dalawang linggong pagtira sa hotel, sila raw ang pinagbayad sa kanilang mga pagkain. Sila rin ang gumasta sa bottled mineral water na ininom.

Ikinabaliw ng mga kandidata ang pamamaraan sa pagpili ng winner.

Wala raw silang ipinagkaiba sa mga contestant ng Survivor. May wall climbing at iba pang activities na ikinaloka ng Mrs. World contestants.

Awang-awa si Joanne sa 54-year old representative ng Israel na pinilit na sumali sa wall climbing contest pero hindi nakatagal dahil mahina ang resistensya.

To top it all, ibinase sa slot machine ang pagpili sa limang finalists. Pumasok sa finals ang limang kandidata na nakakuha ng pinakamataas na points sa casino slot machines.

Hindi nag-provide ng service bus ang organizer. Sa isang function na pinuntahan ng mga babae, isinakay sila sa isang van na walang upuan.

Siksikan sa pagkakaupo sa lapag ng sasakyan ang mga kandidata na hindi makapaniwala sa nangyayari sa kanila.

Sanay sa pagsali sa mga international beauty contest si Joanne kaya siya ang naging spokesperson ng mga kandidata tungkol sa kanilang mga reklamo.

Nangako ang organizer na bibigyan ng pansin at solusyon ang mga problema pero hindi ito natupad.

Ipinadala si Joanne sa Mrs. World Contest ng talent scout na si Ovette Ricalde. Mula nang umalis at makabalik ng bansa si Joanne, hindi raw siya tinawagan o binigyan ng moral support ng talent scout.

Dapat magsilbing babala sa mga nagbabalak sumali sa Mrs. World Contest ang mga naranasan ni Joanne.

A Few days ago when the Miss Universe final was screened on television, many keen pageant followers were disappointed that they did not see Ghana’s representative as they have done for the past four years. Well, it appears that more disappointment await pageant fans when they discover that come next October, Ghana’s representative will again be missing in the line-up of Miss World beauties as has been for over 20 years.

Media Whizz Kids, the organisers of Miss Ghana Beauty Pageant, have announced that there will be no Ghanaian at this year’s Miss World pageant. This, the organisers say will enable Miss Ghana 2003 spend sufficient time on charity work countrywide and also will afford her ample time for grooming to make a good mark at Miss World 2004.

The Media Whizz Kids announcement was timely as keen observers of the pageant were expressing concern at the delay in the organisation of what is, perhaps, the biggest entertainment event on the Ghanaian calendar. The organisers assured fans that the show is going to come off and associated the unusual delay to a redesigning exercise aimed at improving the quality of the programme.

Since Akuba Cudjoe won the Miss (Lux) Universe crown in 1999 and went on to make Ghana proud by coming among the ten finalists at that years Miss Universe, the interest of people in this particular pageant has been hyped hoping that finally a Ghanaian will win the crown of the Universe.

Unfortunately that dream fizzled into thin air after last year’s pageant when the pageant organisers themselves packed out of town leaving behind a trail of broken promises. At last years edition of the Miss Universe Ghana Pageant, Miss Stephanie Walkins-Fia was crowned queen and she was expected to represent the country at the international event, however nothing was heard about her participation.

As it stands, Ghanaians who follow the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants closely are advised not to strain their eyes looking for their representatives on TV because they will not be seeing any Ghanaian faces at the two competitions. Although beauty pageants have come under criticism in recent times, most people have come to accept them and they are perhaps the most crowd-pulling entertainment events in Ghana today.

Although year after year Ghana’s participants have not made it to the top at international pageants, Ghanaians have not lost hope believing that somehow their star will shine someday.

Norway's candidate for the Miss Universe title says she would never have entered if she knew what was in store for her. First the Norwegian organizers booked her a flight to the wrong country, then they left her alone, and then they left her with bills, newspaper VG reports.

Hanne-Karine Soerby, 25, realized something was wrong when her flight to the pageant in Panama City made an emergency stop in Canada. Here she discovered that she had been booked to Panama City, Florida instead of Panama City, Panama, a miss of 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles).

Soerby's family called the Norwegian organizers but received little sympathy, and the rebooking was largely left up to them. After three days she turned up in the right place, and continued to find that she was largely on her own.

Soerby told VG that she had to arrange for her own clothes, shoes and jewelry for all pageant appearances, receiving only two outfits from the Norwegian organizers. Besides having to make up for two days of lost time, Soerby was without the support apparatus the other contestants enjoyed.

Soerby had not been informed an exchange of national gifts between many of the participating nations was a tradition, and was empty-handed when asked about this by the pageant jury.

After being in Panama for two weeks the Norwegian organizers turned up, but she had little communication with them then and none since.

Soerby, who became known in Norway as part of the pop group Cape, which was formed by the Norwegian version of the reality show Pop Stars, has now engaged a lawyer to try and recover the various unforeseen expenses her pageant experience cost her.
