The future edition

Miss Intercontinental 2003 will take place on July 3rd in the capitol of the world - in Berlin (Germany)! About 40 contestants from around the world are going to have a great time with sightseeing tours in the beautyful cities of Dresden, Magdeburg or Gera, having dance nights, relaxing days and finally the chance to present themselfes in a magical final show choreographed by Torsten Galts and hosted by Jana Ina from Brazil (Miss Intercontinental 98 and Patrick Urban (Mister Intercontinental 99) from Germany. When a couple of months ago, LBCI declared that the 2003 miss Lebanon pageant was going to be a reality-based TV show, people were impressed. It was a bold move, and after the reviews it got from the people and the media, it seemed to have worked. Week after week, 2 out of the original 16 girls were voted out, and after 7 shows, we were ready to have our new Miss Lebanon.

On Friday, the night of the event, I was keeping track of her marks given by the judges to see where she would stand among the other girls. Following the unified question, it turned out that Rita had the top average of 9.80/10. The second was Leen Sleiman with an average of 9.77/10, the third being Marie-José Hnein having an average of 9.76/10.

The only thing left to show was the result of the voting done by the people all over the past week. Jalal Chahda, the presenter of the show, kept repeating that, in a few moments, they were going to declare these results. Then, at one time, he said: “And now for the moment you’ve been all waiting for. We are going to find out who the new Miss Lebanon 2003 is.”

At first, I thought that it was weird. Where were the voting results? Did they change their minds? Not for one second did I doubt that they might be a manipulation of these results. I mean who would’ve thought…

And then, “The 2nd runner up is…Rita Lamah.”… I was stunned.
“The 1st runner up is…Leen Sleiman,… and the new Miss Lebanon is…”Marie-José Hnein.”…I was speechless.

Contact with the , president of LITACO, the company responsible for Miss lebanon!!!

TheLebanon.com contacted Mr Antoine Maksoud,President of LITACO : his reply came as follows:

"I have received your e-mail dated May 28th, 2003. We were also not satisfied with the results, but we won't be discussing the details.

What relates me with LBC is only a business contract, LBC can not be held responsible for the results, but the organizers of the Pageant.

Also Rita Lamah is going to be the one who's gonna represent us in one of the worldwide Organization just to be fair with her.

What had just happened? After having the top results given by the judges, Rita had just moved to third place. Something was fishy. In a more decent environment, I wouldn’t have given this a second thought. But this was a scam, a flagrant and mean rip-off.

Let me tell you why…

When there were only 6 final contestants left, “Radio One”, among others, performed an online census to see the people’s favorite. Here are some of the results: 1st: Rita Lamah (20.4%)…3rd:Marie-José Hnein (20.1%)…5th: Leen Sleyman (7.0%)
I have to admit that these, of course were not official results, but they do give a general idea about the public’s opinion.

But let’s forget about that. The next day, LBCI had a special report on its 8 o’clock news to say that if it were only for the judges’ results, Rita would’ve been the queen, but unfortunately, she only got around 16% of the votes, while Marie-José got around 22%, and Leen around 19%
So let’s review this. Why would LBCI have to show these results only when it was too late for them to be considered honest, and why did LBCI find it necessary to defend itself? Was it because of the people who showered the station with telephone calls saying that the whole thing was a cheat? Or was it a weak attempt to save face?

But anyway, I’ve already said a lot, and I haven’t talked about what is really obvious. The organizers said that the judges’ points constitute 2/3 of the final point, and the votes got the other 1/3…. Hmm, I wonder how they made a final average out of marks over 10 and a percentage. Believe me, and I’m not trying to show off, but I really know my way around math. Combining a mark over 10 (with very close results as it’s a beauty pageant) with a percentage is highly arguable. A simple multiplication is not the answer, because in that case, If the contestant with the lowest marks given by the judges (Manal Azzi with ~9.5/10) could win the competition if she gets a mere 2% more than any of the other contestants, which is OBVIOUSLY unfair, because then, why did they bring the judges in the first place?

But let’s suppose for one second that this is mathematically feasible. And please bear with me on this one. If Marie-José got the highest voting percentage, which is ~ 22%, then this would give her a 10/10 mark. (Normalization statistics…max: 10/10, min: 9/10)

Leen having been the second with ~19%, that would give her a mark of 9.97/10, and with a ~16% result, Rita would’ve had 9.94/10

Having said all that, the final marks would be 29.54/30 for Rita, 29.52/30 for Marie-José, and 29.51/30 for Leen.

Guess what?? Rita would still have the highest mark, and thus entitled to the crown.

Too bad that Rita as well as the other contestants have signed a legal clause forbidding them to make any press releases after the show.

But even if I were wrong, LBCI has some serious explaining to do.
I will end my rambling with these few thoughts:

1-After the new Miss Lebanon was announced, the judges came to Rita and told her: “YOU are our Miss Lebanon…”

2-Rita will have the consolation of being picked by “Missology”, the organization of all major beauty pageant as the favorite for Miss Lebanon. And that is a first, because this organization only deals with actual beauty queens, and not contestants…

3-In one of the episodes, Abir Njeim told Marie-José that the producers treating her (Marie-José) with favoritism isn’t good for any of the girls, and that this had to stop.

4-Maybe the only thing a girl needs to be a “Miss Lebanon” is for her mother to be good friends with “Antoine Choueiry”, head of the basketball team Sagesse, and head of “Delta”, LBCI’s advertising representative…[ not related to Radio Delta]

Korean beauty projects the oriental side of Asia and I must say that they do not enter the semi-finals because of a very horrifying gown or very bad projection or simply because they are so stiff on stage but at present I think Korean beauties are definitely improving with their stance and projection on stage.

Gusto ko pa rin si Simona slobodnikova...very fresh. Jherie can make it to the 15 with proper training. Is she currently training in Colombia for the competition?

I like Carla's gown to be recycled and given to Jherie... I know she can give justice to that gown.

A former Miss Universe who was stripped of her title is set to become an MP.

Oxana Fedorova is being courted by officials from Russia's Party of Life to enter the state Duma.

Ms Fedorova, 25, was stripped of her Miss Universe title four months after winning the pageant in 2002 amid claims she refused to carry out her duties.

Miss Universe organisers claim Ms Fedorova, the first Russian to win the competition in its 51-year history, had to hand the crown to runner-up Justine Pasek of Panama.

Ms Fedorova, a St Petersburg police captain, claims she stepped down for personal reasons and dismissed claims she had become pregnant.

Yung reason ata ni Henrique is namatay ang grandparent niya or something. Pero ito yung sabi ng Mabuhay Beauties na reason....

Sana naman kung wala na namang official pictures na marerelease ang Miss earth of the delegates, sana naman digital cam ang gamitin ng mga mabuhay beauties or kung ano pa man. Kasi hindi maganda ang quality....pero they are doing an okay job of giving us updates about the pageant

20 year old Kim Falzun has been proclaimed the new Miss Gibraltar.

Miss Falzun who is currently working as a client liaison officer and is 1.70m tall, has brown hair and green eyes was chosen from the seven girls taking part in this year's contest as the new Miss Gibraltar. Miss Falzun also being awarded the Miss Photogenic Award.

Miss Falzun was presented with the Crown by the Catertaker Miss Gibraltar 2002 Natalie Monteverde whose short riegn has seen her participating recently in the Miss European Pageant.

Stephanie Martinez was chosen as First Princess, whilst Ivanka Bensadon was chosen as Second Princess.

Miss Suellen Hurtado having taken the Best Interview Award and Louise Nunez taking the Miss Freindship award.

Miss Gibraltar 2003 received a cash prize of £2,000 and a clothing allowance of £1,500 amongst other gifts, plus the chance to represent Gibraltar at the Miss World Pageant later this year. The first and second princesses received a cash prize of £1,000 and £500 respectively.

But remember last year, Yurraney Toppenberg was 1st RU. Hence, she was supposed to go to Miss World 2002. But for mysterious reasons, she ended up here for Miss Earth 2002.

Rachelle Oduber, who was 2nd RU, was sent to Miss World 2002 instead.

I wonder what happened.

For this year's Miss Universe Aruba pageant, only the winner and 1st runner-up were crowned. Walang iba pang runners-up na binanggit.

Pero the finalists are Kendra Matthew, Falon Lopez and Ruthlin Werleman.

Kaya I strongly believe the Arubian Miss Earth 2003 representative will emerge from the three.

I think the top 5 most hyped countries every year are the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Thailand and Mexico. Not necessarily in that order pero the first and second belong to us and PR.

Kung hindi ka nga lang nag frequent sa mga MB, iisipin mo mas hyped ang PR kaysa sa atin. Kasi diba Miss Photogenic lagi sila and kapag may mga fan poll, contender lagi sila. Pero the 'good' thing is, kahita papano may 'k' naman i-hype yung mga delegates nila. Eh yung sa atin....

FRANKIE Woulfe 21 won the Miss Limerick World title at a glitzy pageant in the South Court Hotel this Thursday night - 11 years after her sister Marie was crowned Miss Limerick.

The Miss Limerick Ireland crown went to Adare beauty, Caroline Casey 22.

The two beauties saw off tough competition from 36 other Limerick girls bidding for the titles.

UL student Frankie said she was stunned at being selected as a Miss Limerick. "I am totally bewildered by the whole experience. It's been a great day. All of the girls have been fantastic. I've really enjoyed myself. It's just an added bonus to come out winning. It's an amazing feeling. I'm absolutely stunned that from all of the fabulous girls in the competition that I have been picked as Miss Limerick World," she commented.

Frankie is the daughter of Ardagh poultry and dairy farmers Francis and Eileen Woulfe, and has been on the books of the Celia Holman-Lee Model Agency for the past 18 months. She is hopeful that her triumph in the Miss Limerick pageant might be her passport to a full-time career in modelling.

"This is the first pageant I've entered, but I've been modelling for the last year and a half, and I really love it," Frankie said. She has just completed a four-year Computer Science degree at University of Limerick and is currently filling out application forms for a job in that profession.

22-year-old Caroline Casey has been modelling with the Celia Holman-Lee agency for the last five years, and says that winning the beauty pageant is a great boost to her modelling career.

"I'm very excited. I'm just thrilled. I just can't believe I won out of all these girls. Tonight was a super occasion, and this tops it all off. I've been doing part-time modelling with Celia for a couple of years, but whatever happens from now on, this will give my modelling opportunities a big boost," she commented.

Caroline is sitting her final exams to become a beauty therapist and reflexologist in the next few weeks, and once qualified hopes to get a job somewhere glamorous like the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin or a health farm. She was sponsored by designer boutique, Tippe Canoe who also gave her a Patrick Casey designer dress to wear on the night.

Both girls are hoping to do Limerick proud in the finals later this year.

Frankie goes forward to the Miss Ireland World finals on August 1 at the City West Hotel in Dublin, while Caroline will compete in the Miss Ireland Universe finals at the end of the year.

Miss Taiwan, Beverly Chen (ê?Ë¼Óð), who accused China of bullying her this May at the Miss Universe contest in Panama City, admitted late Wednesday to have participated in a Guangzhou beauty contest last year.

"The contest was for all overseas Chinese," Chen said in a TV interview, when asked the reason why she took part in the beauty contest in China.

Wu Miao-ser (Î×Ãî_i), Chen's mother, told the Taipei Times Chen joined a series of beauty pageants to raise her self-confidence.

The annual beauty pageant for overseas Chinese was held in Guangzhou for the first time last year. Competitors in the beauty pageant came from 19 cities worldwide.

Chen was among the 19 women selected in the pageant to be "Friendly Travel Ambassadors in Guangzhou."

At a news conference prior to a banquet held by the rotary clubs of Taipei's Lungmen and Shuangyuan districts where Chen was invited to be an ambassador for their charity activities, Chen gave a short interview to reporters to talk about her experiences at the Miss Universe contest..

An item on Chen's resume in brochures given out to reporters was crossed out.

The item was "Friendly Travel Ambassador for Guangzhou, 2002."

Wu said the item had been crossed out in order to prevent controversy.

Chen, who ranked seventh on the list of the 10 most popular contestants at the Miss Universe contest, returned to Taiwan on June 29.

Chen made headlines at the competition by challenging the demands of the contest organizers that she wear a sash describing her as Miss Chinese Taipei rather than Miss Taiwan.

Chen, 24, is currently a student at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. She was Miss Chinese Melbourne in 2001.

Peter Wang (ÍõÕýÁx), general manager of JANO Enterprise Inc, arranged Chen to be the two rotary clubs' charity ambassador.

When asked to comment on Chen's participation in the Guangzhou pageant, Wang said yesterday competitors in the pageant were from all over the world.

Wang noted there was nothing wrong about Chen's joining the beauty contest.

In the Wednesday press conference, Chen wore the Miss Taiwan sash she was not allowed to don at the Miss Universe contest.

Chen said that she had been saddened that the pageant authorities had succumbed to pressure from China on the sash issue.

Chen said the pageant authorities gave her two sashes, one read "Miss Taiwan" and the other "Chinese Taipei."

"I was told to wear the Chinese Taipei one in front of the media. The Miss Taiwan one was only for occasions where the media were absent," Chen said.

Chen recalled during the beauty contest, competitors were once arranged to meet Panama's President Mireya Moscoso.

"I put on the Miss Taiwan sash for the occasion. I thought the sash would be suitable for the occasion because Panama was one of Taiwan's allies," Chen said.

However, officials from the pageant authorities asked her to go to a vehicle parked outside and harshly demanded that she change her sash to the Chinese Taipei one, she said.

"The episode really saddened me," she said.

On May 23, a tearful Chen appeared in a press conference in the midst of the beauty contest to tell reporters the pageant authorities said she could no longer wear her Miss Taiwan sash.

She told reporters that due to pressure from China, the pageant authorities said she could only wear the Chinese Taipei sash.

Chen said in order to allow the beauty contest to continue peacefully, she decided to abide by the pageant authorities' request.

THERE IS an innovation or two in the 'Miss Jamaica World 2003' pageant, as the contest, which is put on by the Spartan Health Club, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

The main one is 'The Public Vote', in which the members of the general public gets the chance to vote for their favourite contestant. Voting will be done by means of cellular telephone text messages and the Internet, at the Miss Jamaica website, www.missjamaicaworld.com. Persons can vote as often as they want and their input will make up 50 per cent of each contestant's score. The persons who receive the 10 highest scores then go on to the next round of the pageant finals to be held on August 30 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.

This is in keeping with the new system instituted by the 'Miss World' organisers last year, in which text messages made up 50 per cent of each contestant's score. Locally, sectional prizes will also be decided via public voting on the pageant's website.

There are also two 'Pick the Winner' competitions for persons who participate in the voting, one for persons living in the island and the other for those overseas. Locally, there will be a cash prize and, for the overseas' version, the winner will receive a Jamaican holiday courtesy of Sandals Resorts and Air Jamaica.

The 20 finalists for this year's competition will be selected on Sunday, July 27. The eliminations, dubbed a 'Health, Fitness and Beauty Extravaganza', will take place in the ballroom of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston, and will be a 'two-in-one' event _ aerobics, fitness and strength competitions between 11a.m. and 2 p.m. and the selection and sashing of the contestants between 7 and 10 p.m. One ticket will cover both events.

The day will also feature the pre-judging of the 'Mr. Jamaica World' finalists, as the 'Mr. World' competition has been resurrected this year. Jamaica's previous two Mr. Jamaica Worlds, Richard Nevers in 1996 and Kinte Thelwell in 1998, were both top-five finalists at previous incarnations of the international staging of the event. Entries to both competitions close on July 23.

The winner of this year's 'Miss Jamaica World' title will win, among prizes valued at a total of over $3 million, a 2003 Peugeot 206 courtesy of Island Motors, a first-class plane ride to London courtesy of Air Jamaica and a wardrobe courtesy of Uzuri International.

The three top finishers will be awarded scholarships from the Institute of Management Sciences.

Musique: Hi there! Unfortunately, Julio Rodriguez has not replied to my e-mail yet. I asked nga if there is any truth in the aforementioned rumors. There are also rumors that Miss World Venezuela 2003 will still be selected, but she will go to Miss World 2004. Again, it's just a rumor.

I also read reports indicating that Carol Arciniegas (Miss R.D. 2002 1st RU) and Yamani Saied (Señorita Panama Universo '98) will represent the Dominican Republic and Panama respectively in Miss World 2003. Stay tuned na lang for confirmation.

Gb also reports na may bago ng reps ang UK and Venezuela...Pero sila Paula and Melissa pa rin yung nasa pics nila...baka bukas pa ma update or baka stale versions lang yung nakikita ko...I could understand the change in Venezuela pero sa UK...ano yon nagkamali lang....hindi pala si Paula ang highest ranking sa mga UK delegates?

Si Osmel na ba talaga ang may hawak ng Miss V Earth na franchise or okay lang sa kanyang 'gamitin' ng ibang orgs ang ladies niya?

GB also reports that Miss Miami USA 2004, Masielle Otero will be going to the 2003 Miss International Pageant. She is 23, lives in Miami, and made Top 15 at Florida USA.

Musique: I also read reports Christianne Balmelli will join Miss Viña Chile in the future. It's the pageant that selects the Chilean rep for Miss Universe.

Miss Turks & Caicos 2003 is set for August 1, Friday.

The swimsuit competition and the rest of the preliminaries will be held on July 31.

It can't be confirmed if the winner will compete in Miss Universe 2004.
