WHERE IN THE WORLD? CHINA HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED, SAYS JULIA MORLEY

Johannesburg - With six months to go before the new Miss World is crowned, this year's competition is already surrounded by controversy.

Sun International, owner of the Miss South Africa pageant, has decided to wait until later to decide if South Africa will take part in the competition, because the organisers haven't confirmed rumours that it will be held in China.

If rumours are true, many countries will think twice before sending representatives, because the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) started in China earlier this year and more than 780 people have died.

Julia Morley, chairperson of the beauty competition, refuses to confirm rumours leaked by the Chinese media.

Sue Klerck, head of Sun International's public relations, told Beeld the Miss World organisation in London had informed them that official information on this year's venue would be available only at the end of August.

The Chinese media said the competition would be held in the southern city of Sanya on the Hainan Island and the first beauties were expected to arrive on November 10. The new Miss World will be crowned on December 6 in a brand new cultural centre, the Crown of Beauty, which is under construction.

Turkey, birthplace of the present Miss World, Azra Akin, is apparently second choice to host the competition. (Article by Sonnette Lombard, News 24.com)

Maria Jose Girol, 18, was crowned on June 12th as Miss Andorra 2003, and she will represent this Principality in the Miss World 2003 contest in December. It is the first time that Andorra participates in a major international beauty pageant.

JENSIE_G: I'm not quite sure. In a major pageant siguro as stated by GB. If you were surprised at the news na first time lang nila, ako rin, medyo nagulat. Kasi diba parang there's a possibility na sumali na ang Andorra sa Miss World dati (considering na maraming countries na sumasali sa Miss W na hindi sa U). Oh well, good luck na lang sa kanila.

Ang ganda talaga ng Libertango by Bond. Everytime I listen to it, it brings back memories. This music was perfect for the competition!

Do you guys use Media Player 9.0 in your computer. Kasi may mga music info na lumalabas if you're listening to songs and online ka. While I was listening to Libertango, ito yung artist info for Bond:

Sorry kung off-topic and sorry if will bother some people pero as a Harry Potter fan, excited na talaga ako for book5! Ang tagal ding naghintay ng mga fans for that. Sana naman ma live-up to the expectations.

Ang ganda ng cover, I like it because it's shades of blue.

It's kinda like the excitement a pageant fan feels kapag palapit na ng palapit ang Miss U. :D

It happened on June 12, at the new Pabellon de Escaldes, in Andorra la Vella, Principality of Andorra, when the first ever Miss Andorra was crowned. She is Maria Jose Girol, 18, standing 1.71 mts tall. The 1st runner-up was Duli Martinez, and the 2nd runner-up was Mari Carmen Sola.

Mr. Andorra was also elected in the same event, and he is Camilo Saenz, 25, 1.75 mts tall. The 1st runner-up was Laurent Beaumard, and the 2nd runner-up is Adria Hortiguela.

Over 2000 people attended the event, which was considered a huge success by its organizers. Over 100 young women and men participated in the casting preceding the final contest, and 9 finalists were chosen for each category.

The new Miss Andorra will represent this small principality, located in Europe, between Spain and France, in the upcoming Miss World pageant.

Welcome Andorra! Best of luck to your representatives in 2003 and in the future!

I got na my copy.

Sa National sa Sta. Lucia ako nag pareserve kasi it's closer and akala ko kaunti lang ang nag pa reserve dun. Php 1345 din yung price. Pagdating ko sa mall opening, madami ng tao sa National and we were all lined up sa Customer Service to claim our reserved copies. Di ko napansin kung meron books na nasa shelf.

In the world of Formula 3 racing, one of the stand out personalities has to be Richard Joson, of the DENSO/JF3 Team. One look in to his eyes, confirms the intensity of this young man. With 6 years of karting experience, 91 Inter-Continental A Champion and 93 National Karter of the Year , Richard is always racing. Calculated in his words and actions, he never misses an opportunity to get the advantage over his fellow competitors. Whether it be at a cocktail party, or at a practice session on the track, Joson NEVER stops racing!

His presence is undeniable, almost arrogant, to a point. But, deep down, his is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. It's just the driving force from within him that takes presidence above all. Despite having one of the best funded and one of the best prepared teams in Asian Formula 3, he continues to leave nothing to chance. With the competition as close as it is, who can blame him.

It was a rare treat to spend some time with Richard at a recent "karting" day at the Kart Trak in the CCP complex, along with DENSO's **** Falcon and Richard's close friend, (Miss World Contestant representing the Philippines), Maria Rafaela Verdadero Yunon... Mafae (for short), a beautiful, long legged example of a lady, was a former model for DENSO.

It was nice to see Joson in a relaxed situation. Of course, relaxing to him is doing fast laps in a Kart! Mafae and Richard, the #1 Filipino Formula 3 driver, ran several laps around the track, getting our Ms. World representative more familiar with what she needs to do. This was her first outing on a kart, and lucky for her, she was being tutored by a true expert! Joson led the way for several laps, slowly increasing the pace. In no time at all, Mafae was doing quite well and was even quicker than other patrons of the facility!

When asked about this first outing with karts, Mafae replied "I plan on doing this more often!" Having enjoyed her track session with the former Asian Zone ICA Karting Champion, Joson proved to be a really good tutor. "I never knew how much effort it takes to drive these things. I can't imagine formula 3!" she continues.

The day went on with all of us taking turns running on the track. During one of the "rest" periods, Joson remeniced, "This is how I started... Like this, with my friends at the (former) JRC Kartway." I asked why he no longer races karts, Richard replied "I just don't have the drive anymore. I want more!" Hence, his formula 3 racing effort.

With partners like DENSO, MOF Shipping, Hanjin Shipping, SAGAWA Express, Senator Lines and AUTRANS, Richard Joson will continue to keep those in the Asian Formula Series on their toes. This man is looking to the top of the podium, and isn't slowing down for anyone.

cathybee: I downloaded the songs na ginamit sa pageant. Di ko alam kung complete na pero I have Libertango (my fave), Shine, Fuego, Victory & Allegretto. Pero sabi sa TPMUM, pati daw yung Strang Paradise ginamit. Sabi ko nga, kapag naging impulsive ako one of these days, bibilin ko yung album nilang 'Shine'. In support na rin sa musical acts who support Miss U.

Off topic ulit...
Over the weekend, hanggang chapter 25 lang natapos ko. Kainis pa, gusto ko ngang dalhin sa work pero baka pagkaguluhan. Ngayon lang uli ako makakabasa. Mabagal kasi ako magbasa dahil I try to digest all details para hindi ako masyadong shock sa revelations sa huli. (hehe, lagi kasi akong nasho-shock sa huli, basing on the first 4 books)

Morley's World vision

It is one of the world's most popular TV shows: with 2bn viewers only the World Cup Final and opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games pull in more viewers.

But unlike other successful UK exports, such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire - which picked up a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2001 after being exported to more than 60 countries - Miss World does not win the luvvies' plaudits.

Miss World may be frowned upon and even occasionally sneered at in the UK, but it goes from strength to strength across the globe. This year 124 countries will take part, and the broadcast is expected to attract more viewers than the Oscars or the Eurovision Song Contest.

It is particularly popular in South America, Asia and India, where viewers watch repeats three or four times. So perhaps it is odd that only now is Miss World Limited - creator and owner of the beauty pageant - making a big push to find other commercial uses for the famous brand.

At this year's contest in Sanya, China, the company hopes to unveil the first of a series of partnerships with international consumer goods companies, which should see the launch of a wide range of Miss World products, from branded make-up, to fashion items and haircare. A Miss World magazine is also planned.

And there are big hopes for the Miss World website, which attracts up to 5m visitors a day during the contest. "I want to develop the marketing and merchandising of Miss World," says Julia Morley, the former model, who took over as chairman of Miss World following the death of her husband Eric Morley in November 2000.

The company has been privately owned by the Morley family since 1991, when it severed its links with Trans World Communications, the investment vehicle of Owen Oyston, the disgraced businessman. Morley says she is also in talks to link up with "a very famous modelling school".

But one of the first licences she will grant is for the development of a "QVC style" shopping section on the Miss World website, where users will be able to view and buy the dresses worn by the competitors. "It is not just about the dresses. It is about giving young designers a chance. Each country submits their design and the girls wear them," says Morley.

Since the death of her husband - the canny Mecca PR man who founded the show in 1951 during the Festival of Britain - Morley has overhauled the format of the show. "I am not saying that my husband did not do a great job. But when he died two-and-a-half years ago, it was neccessary to move it forward and to bring it up to date," she says.

"I don't like swimsuits on stage. I like to see swimsuits on a beach. There was nothing wrong with it, but it's not the sort of thing I would want to work with personally," adds Morley. Not only has the swimsuit parade gone, but Miss World is now hosted by a female compere.

Meanwhile, Morley is also hoping to return Miss World to British TV screens. Last year Miss World was broadcast to 142 countries, but it was the first time in 51 years that it was not shown in the UK. "Before we switched to Sky [in 1997], we had 12.5m British viewers. When Channel 5 did it [in 1999], it had a bigger audience than it had ever had - 8m viewers tuned in," she says.

Morley says she is in talks with "three major British channels", although she appears to have no intention of kowtowing in order to get the programme back on British screens. Television, she says, lacks guts. "They are scared that they will be scorned by their fellows. Forget your fellows and get what your audience wants."

"A lot of the programmes on TV are not the sort of programme you would sit down and feel comfortable watching with your 13-year-old son," she adds. "Miss World is fun, it is fashion." So is British TV elitist? "Elitist is too good a word. We should have some spectacular shows. We should have some of these family shows. But instead you see guts spilled all over the place and the horrors of the world," she says.

Morley has spent most of the year flying back and forth from China in an attempt to ensure that this year's Miss World is a success. Held on the tropical island of Hainan - which claims to be the Hawaii of the East - in a purpose-built 5,500 seater theatre, Morley hopes that a successful show in China will help to distance the pageant from the tragic events of last year.

In December, 200 Nigerians were killed in religious riots prompted by a controversial newspaper article. A Nigerian journalist had written that the prophet Mohammed would not have been offended by the contest and might well have chosen a wife from among the entrants.

But even before the outbreak of violence - which prompted Miss World to hastily relocate the show to Alexandra Palace in London - her choice of Nigeria as the venue had attracted criticism. A number of contestants boycotted the pageant in protest over the death sentence by stoning imposed for adultery on Amina Lawal by a Sharia Muslim court.

"I don't know if you have noticed but no one has since given a hoot for that kid [Amina Lawal]," she says. "I still do," adds Morley, who insists that she only went ahead with the show there after receiving assurances from the Nigerian government that the stoning would not take place.

Does she regret going to Nigeria? "Hindsight would tell me not to go to Nigeria. Although my emotions tell me I did the right thing. I was doing it for the right reason."

It was a former Miss Nigeria who persuaded Morley to hold the event in the country. "She said to me: 'I don't suppose you would ever consider Nigeria'. She said we will never get a chance to move forward if people won't come and visit us." Meanwhile, a successful show in China should also help to restore Miss World's financial fortunes.

Over the past 50 years, Miss World has made millions for both the Morley family and a string of charities, but profits have fallen in recent years. In 2000 the company made £500,000 and last year it broke even. "I didn't lose money. I didn't make money last year," says Morley.

And it is easy to see the group's potential. An up-and-coming tourist destination such as Sanya is charged up to $5m by Miss World for hosting the event. And then there is additional revenue from TV rights. When the company holds its own beauty parade to find commercial partners for its make-up and fashion ventures, Morley should be able to display some attractive vital statistics.

There is a very, very strong possibility that the Miss Universe 2005 pageant will be held in Cancun, Mexico.

If ever this pushes through, Mexico will be MUO's most favorite venue (outside the US and Puerto Rico).

They have hosted thrice already: Acapulco in '78, Cancun in '89 and Mexico City in '93.

For those who've seen MU89, the production was superb! I think it's the best of the 80's. :)

Miss Ecuador 2004 might be held in January to give the hometown queen ample time to prepare for the pageant. The last time they made it was way back in 1981, when Lucia Vinueza made it to the Top 12 in New York.

And by doing that they have come in and give us their experiences out there and that is sort of dictating to us what we need to do to focus in terms of preparing our girls, both for the Miss Belize Pageant and for international pageants."

"Now Friday night of course is the big gala. Our theme this year is the barrier reef, and so we'll be doing a whole fifteen-minute introduction with lights, sound effects, all sort of effects in terms of looking at he barrier reef. The girls will be creatures from the sea and they'll be dressed in various costumes. We also have the swimsuit section and then the glamour, which is the evening gown competition. Thereafter, they have their question and answer segment and then we pick four finalists to go to the finals of the Miss Belize 2003 Pageant."

The country of Belize is well known for its beautiful women. Next Friday evening, San Pedro beauty Isela Duran will represent "La Isla Bonita" in competition for the prized title of Miss Belize 2003.

A resident of the island for the past two years, Miss Duran majored in business at St. John's College (SJC), and studied cosmetology at Capital College in Omaha, USA. This 23 year-old businesswoman has a background in biology, chemistry and computers. She plans to own her own cosmetology business someday.

Isela Duran is not only educated, but also has pageant experience. She entered her first pageant in college, competing for the title Miss SJC, and was also crowned Miss Belize City Lions Queen in 1998. In addition to competing in these pageants, she is also featured in this year's Belikin Swimsuit Calendar.

A native of Belize City, Miss Duran's interests include becoming a dive instructor, reading suspense novels and styling hair.

In regards to competing, Miss Duran states she was greatly influenced by her father, who was very supportive and let her know that she "could do anything" if she "put her mind to it."

The Miss Belize Pageant Committee Chairwoman, Carolyn Sandiford-Tench only recently informed Miss Duran, that she was nominated to participate in this year's pageant. She is currently seeking sponsorship for the event and may be contacted at 226-4660. Selection is based on appearance, education, eloquence and past experience in beauty pageants. The Miss Belize pageant will be held Friday, June 27th, 2003 at the Belize City Center.

Gusto ko rin talaga si Sanja Papic na sumali sa Miss Earth. Pero the possibility is very remote kasi I know is that she is really bend on continuing her studies and colelge na siya by sept or oct (not sure ha) and isa pa, when last year, SLadjana Bozovic competed, she was parang just a candidate in the spur of the moment kasi hindi sila nakahanap nang mapapadala.

Rumor has it na Katerina Vucetic will be here in Manila to compete. Pero its a rumor pa lang.

An interesting assessment of the Miss Universe Aruba 2003 contestants. Read on.

MISS ELEGANCE, NO SURPRISES. After struggling for years with this “off” and “on” concept of the Miss Elegance/Miss Aruba pageants - to accommodate the live telecast - somehow at the Wyndham Aruba Resort & Casino, the new home of Miss Aruba, with its low-ceilinged ballroom and cozy atmosphere, it all worked very well.

We watched while the cameras were rolling, and as the room went dark, rated the candidates and exchanged commentary with a diverse group of experts from shutterbug Famoso Diaz to child-prodigy Shanella Lopez – who has aspirations of becoming Miss Teen in the future. Dear candidates: Jan Poets is not, I repeat, not the only press photographer in the world.

True, he jumps up and down incessantly and noticeably pushes himself to the forefront, yet I counted at least one dozen other photographers who wanted your attention Nathalie Bierrmans while you only had eyes for Jan Poets. Anyway, at the end it all worked out and we got to take our pictures, after the pageant – with Poets still clicking.

Just as I finished repeating the local lore that Miss Elegance never wins the Miss Aruba title, temptress Kenrda Mathews was pronounced Miss Popular AND Miss Elegance. Kendra is a fierce competitor and she is used to winning, it is now in her hands, or rather depending on her strong will and burning ambition, to land the final title as well, for the first time in history, I think. In spite of the Charo hair – she was the original "Cuchi-Cuchi" girl, or maybe it was Barbie-inspired, over the top, movie-star do, she won, because she is Kendra and we recognized her uniqueness under the ringlets, curls, waves and flaps. How much is too much? I don’t know, perhaps I am in a minority here.

Nathalie Bierrmans was also a favorite all along, as pedigreed and well positioned as Kendra. And gorgeous too. Did we mention intelligent and charming? Other standouts for the night at no particular order were Sandra Rios who seemed to me the most relaxed. What teeth, what smile, what bounce in her walk, this girl was having fun and the light blue dress worked so well for her, breasts bandeaued, cleavage and shoulders exposed. Fatima Salie is a fresh, delicious drink of water and the beige gown complemented her complexion so well. Great hairdo, the upsweep was fantastic. She is gracious and elegant and hit the mark 100%, as all photographers got up to take her picture. Tina Escobedo, editor, Island Temptation awards Stacy Salomon the title of Miss Elegance. Tall and striking the Naomi Campbell look-alike has seductive eyes, though her walk needs to be improved, she waddles – she’s not the only one. Falon Lopez, reminded me of a Telenovela starlet, with a tremendous look . . .

Ecuador will be host to the Miss Universe 2004 pageant, which will be held in the city of Quito and will promote numerous locations all around the country.

The 2004 Quito Host Committee is working really fast. In a recent interview conducted by Cosas.com to Miss Universe's Licensee in Ecuador, Rocio Vallejo de Ponce (Below, Miss Ecuador 1972), she stated that the host hotel has already been chosen (Swissotel), and that the telecast could take place in either Cemexpo or the Rumiñahui Coliseum. "The pageant will be held in Quito, but the whole country will be promoted. We want to benefit Quito, Cuenca, Guayaquil, the Amazonia, Galápagos, Imbabura..."

Just before the 2003 pageant in Panama, executives from Miss Universe Org. visited Ecuador to know the country, and coordinate logistical aspects. A special committee traveled then to Panama City to close the deal. An official date is yet to be defined. The announcement will probably take place in January of 2004.

Ms. Vallejo also informed that the Miss Ecuador 2004 pageant will take place in January, so the winner will have 5 months to prepare for the international competition, and fulfill her duties as 'host contestant'.

The President of Ecuador, Lucio Gutierrez, has formed an official Host Committee that will coordinate all matters pertaining to the organization and developement of this contest, which attracts the interest of millions of people all around the world. The official announcement took place last Tuesday, June 3rd, during the Miss Universe 2003 Coronation Ball. "See you next year in Quito, Ecuador!"

KorsakoV: I think Lara_D can explain that better than me. Since 1984 (not sure of the exact date), Sweden parang established it as their national costume. Kaya ever since then, ganyan na ang nakikita nating costume nila not only in pageants, but in other cultural events as well.

(With the exception of 2000 and 2001 of course)

2000- Valerie Aflalo wore an apron-like costume with the map of Sweden printed on it.

2001- Malin Olsson wore an white and green pheasant dress.

Miss BVI 2002 Bethsaida Smith was supposed to represent the British Virgin Islands in the Miss Universe (2003) pageant, like all her predecessors did. However, she skipped it for unknown reasons.

THERE was no surprise at the announcement of the winner of the Miss Limerick 2003 competition, held in the South Court Hotel last (Thursday) night when bookies favourite Frankie Woulfe was crowned as Miss Limerick World.

The Ardagh woman will represent Limerick in the Miss Ireland World finals on August 1 in Dublin, but she will not represent Limerick in the Miss Ireland Universe final - that honour goes to Adare's Caroline Casey, who was named as Miss Limerick Universe.

This year the organisers decided to name two winners from the competition, with one going forward to the Miss World competition section and the other going to the Miss Universe selection process.

In all 38 Limerick lovelies contested the competition over the last two nights, and all celebrated into the early hours of the morning at the after show part in the Brazen Head on O'Connell Street.

During the first week of March, Magic Carpet Ride had the honor and the pleasure of taking Justine Pasek, Miss Universe, for her first hot air balloon ride. They took off from Chateau Élan and landed just outside of Winder, GA. Justine and her friend, Carolina (both from Panama City, Panama), had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed their adventure. Shortly after their landing next to a lake, the chase crew helped pack up and everyone headed back to partake in the traditional champagne celebration.

Fanya Teixeira was crowned Miss Tocantins 2003 last March 31st. She will compete in Miss Brasil 2004 set for April next year. The reigning Miss Brasil, Gislaine Ferreira, represented Tocantins during this year's national pageant.

Miss Benin 2003 has been launched recently. In it's 8th edition, the pageant's theme for this year is "beauty in the service of the masses". The members of the pageant's steering committee will be introduced to the public during the pageant proper. The candidates are invited to be registered on the lists for a preselection in the days to come.

It could not be confirmed whether the Miss Benin 2003 winner will compete in any major international pageant.

The Señorita Bolivia 2003 pageant will be held in Sucre. It will be the city's first time ever to host the national pageant, tagged as the most prestigious one in the country. The Teatro Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho will host the big event, set for August 1.

Winners of the pageant will represent Bolivia in Miss Universe 2004, Miss World 2003 and Miss International 2003.

Olga Serezhnikova will represent Belarus in the Miss Europe 2003 pageant set for December in Paris, France. Olga was a Miss Belarus 2002 contestant. She won the "Miss Photo" special award.

Olga is a fifth-year student of the Moscow International Economic Institute.
