More pictures of Miss Spain. You've noticed that the Spaniards have this different kind of aura, even if they colonized a large portion of the globe, thus producing Latinas, they still have this European elegance.

Personal Comments, Questions and Observations:
1. Was it Miss Egypt who tripped during the swimsuit competition on finals night?
2. Notice that there were lots of either fur or feathers in the gowns? Obvious delegates were Colombia, Canada, and Namibia. Zorah's 2001 dress would have joined the league.
3. Parang paralized yung right fingers ni Miss Mexico, especially when clapping during the announcement of the Top 10.
4. Miss Brazil's hair and make-up were much better than during finals night. Masyadong pang pageant yung look niya in the pageant, eh. I love her headshot. Sobrang trailblazing!
5. The last few Miss Colombias were medyo "sablay" in my opinion. Nawala yung charm na mala-Paula Bettencourt, Carolina Gomez, and Catalina Acosta. I feel that if Tatiana Castro were a delegate today, she'd make it. (She has very modern looks for me.)
6. The beauty and stature of Gem Padilla, Sara Jane Paez, Nina Alagao, Melanie Marquez, and Miriam Quiambao would potentially succeed today (or with MU's current "look"). Konting update lang sa porma and they'll probably do well. (Sorry for the bias, I'm more into the morena/chinita types.) Have you seen Joanne Quintas lately? If she were single, ok siya for Miss Universe.
7. Kate Baesa minus the "war paint" (as Jensie would call it) would be a great delegate.
8. Carla Gay is beautiful and did us proud but she does not have a consistent look, nor is she "chameleon-like" in the Sushmita kind of way.
9. The 15-10-5-1 format is great for me as a pageant viewer! I like it, but it does not work for those delegates whose strength is the swimsuit more than the gown. (Like Peru 2003, probably.) Tama rin na mauna yung gown sa swimsuit because gowns tend to deceive some flaws in the body. Pagdating sa swimsuit portion, you'll know how consistently good a delegate is.
10. Had MU employed the current format years back, then we should have seen Sara Jane Paez, Gem Padilla, and Abbygale Arenas in the semis. Had they employed the 20-10-1 format as in Miss World, isama niyo na rin sina Joanne Quintas, Aileen Damiles (?), Jewel Lobaton, and Nina Alagao (?). (Dream on, Apostle!)

Most likely she is. In Miss World its a different story. In 1983, the daughter of Carmen Susana Dujim-Zubillaga, Miss World 1955 represented Venezuela in Miss World 1983, she's none other than Carolina Cerutti-Dujim. However she failed to make it to the finals.

Ako I personally find the 15-10-5-1 format interesting. La lang. Kaka-high eh. But then Apostle is right, kawawa ang mga girls whose strengths lies either in gown or swimsuit and not both. :(
Sayang talaga si Eva Gonzalez. I was expecting her to do a Heather Hamilton. (may thunder thighs pero pasok pa rin) I believe kung pasok siya sa 15 ay makakaabot siya sa 10. Howell. Better luck na lang for them next year. Spain will never ever run out of beautiful women.

Miss Universe beauty pageant punishes Russian girls over Fyodorova story
MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Russian girls will not win the Miss Universe beauty pageant in the next 2-3 years, the organizers and participants of the pageant said.
"In the next 2-3 years, Russian girls will have a really hard time at the Miss Universe beauty pageant. This is because of last year's situation when the Russian contestant, Oksana Fyodorova, was stripped of her crown," Nikolai Kostin, president of the Miss Russia beauty pageant, told a news conference at the Izvestia media center in Moscow on Monday.
Oksana Fyodorova, 24, who was crowned Miss Universe last year, was stripped of her title after breaking the terms of the contract. In addition, she did not fulfil the terms of the contract requiring her to make public appearances. The organizers of the pageant also accused her of secretly getting married.
"This year, Russian participant Olesya Bondarenko, who, according to my reliable information, was included in the five top beauties, was later crossed off from the list of finalists. She did not even get into the first fifteen. This was done specifically to prevent Russia from behaving as it did in Fyodorova's case," Kostin said.
Bondarenko, who was crowned Miss Russia in 2002 and who had just returned from the Miss Universe beauty pageant, has confirmed that the press and the organizers of the pageant were very unfriendly to her. "I was bombarded with questions from journalists. The main one was what Russia can hope for after what happened with Fyodorova. Although the attitude toward me as a participant did change after a couple of days, the opinion about Russian girls changed in general," she said.
The Miss Russia pageant intends to create a national beauty academy, Kostin said. "In the course of the ten years of the pageant's work, during which practically all of the highest goals have been reached, we have managed to accumulate considerable experience," Kostin said.
In general, Kostin said Russia needs a program of state support for national beauty pageants. "In many countries, there are national beauty schools, where girls undergo a lot of training, sometimes practically from childhood."

Like last year (Ozge Ulusoy, Claudia Ortiz & Florecita Cobian). good luck talaga to Charlene. And para naman hindi masyadong ma cast aside ang Miss Earth / Asia-Pacific.

RUSSIANS SAY OLESYA BONDARENKO DIDN'T PLACE BECAUSE OF OXANA FEDOROVA
MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Russian girls will not win the Miss Universe beauty pageant in the next 2-3 years, the organizers and participants of the pageant said.
"In the next 2-3 years, Russian girls will have a really hard time at the Miss Universe beauty pageant. This is because of last year's situation when the Russian contestant, Oxana Fedorova, was stripped of her crown," Nikolai Kostin, president of the Miss Russia beauty pageant, told a news conference at the Izvestia media center in Moscow on Monday.
Oxana Fedorova (right), 24, who was crowned Miss Universe last year, was stripped of her title after breaking the terms of the contract. In addition, she did not fulfill the terms of the contract requiring her to make public appearances. The organizers of the pageant also accused her of secretly getting married.
"This year, Russian participant Olesya Bondarenko (left), who, according to my 'reliable information', was included in the five top beauties, was later crossed off from the list of finalists. She did not even get into the first fifteen. This was done specifically to prevent Russia from behaving as it did in Fedorova's case," Kostin said.
Bondarenko, who was crowned 1st runner-up at Miss Russia in 2002 and who had just returned from the Miss Universe beauty pageant, has confirmed that the press and the organizers of the pageant were very unfriendly to her. "I was bombarded with questions from journalists. The main one was what Russia can hope for after what happened with Fedorova. The Miss Russia pageant intends to create a national beauty academy, Kostin said. "In the course of the ten years of the pageant's work, during which practically all of the highest goals have been reached, we have managed to accumulate considerable experience," Kostin said.
Bondarenko, from Khabarovsk, was appointed as Miss Universe representative after the original winner, Svetlana Koroleva (left), won the Miss Europe pageant in December. The organization then held an emergency pageant called "Miss Russia Universe" and they crowned Yulia Akhonkova, ineligible to participate because she was 17. Then they called the 1st runner-up, Maria Smirnova (right), disqualified when found out that she posed in Russian Playboy. Just when everyone thought Russia would not be represented, Bondarenko joined the international pageant.
In general, Kostin said Russia needs a program of state support for national beauty pageants. "In many countries, there are national beauty schools, where girls undergo a lot of training, sometimes practically from childhood."

China's bet to Miss Intercontinental in Germany, Ma Yong Mei, from Szezhuan Province. She was the favourite in Miss China Universe 2003 but was un-placed. Being a professional model, she should outdo the beautiful but shy Wu Wei with better results, at least she knows how to "flaunt" on stage instead of trying to keep to a side claiming to exhibit the introvertedness of chinese ladies.
A waste...

Miss Ireland 98'.
Lovely Ciara crowned Miss Waterford
NINETEEN-years-old Leaving Cert. student Ciara Bailey, from Lismore Park, was finding it hard to keep her mind focussed on her exams this week having been crowned Miss Waterford.
She scooped the prize of €1,000, €300 to spend in A- Wear and €750 entry to the Miss Ireland competition. Blue-eyed Ciara, who sits her Leaving Certificate at the Presentation Convent commencing today (Wednesday, is a part time model with Waterford model agency, Prima, run by its director Katherine Cahill.
Andrea Roche, who owns the franchise for the Miss Ireland for Miss World competition, was in Axis Mundi to judge the 16 finalists and choose the winner.
At the private party to announce the winner on Friday night, Andrea Roche commented that the standard in Waterford City was very high. She said there were at least five girls who she thought could have won the final.
About Ciara Bailey, who is daughter of Ann and Liam Bailey, she said, “Ciara really has everything, she is tall at 5’ 8”, slim, beautiful, but is also lovely to talk to and has a great walk.”
Prima’s director Katherine Cahill said Ciara has a lovely, sunny personality and had always behaved very professionally over her last three years with Prima. I’ve no doubt that she will do well in Miss Ireland.”
Miss Ireland will be held on August 1 at a televised event in City West Hotel, Dublin. Andrea announced that singer Ronan Keating and Louis Walsh will be among the judges this year. Julia Morley, who runs Miss World, will also come to Dublin for the event.
At the private party to announce the winner on Friday night, Andrea Roche commented that the standard in Waterford City was very high. She said there were at least five girls who she thought could have won the final.
A runner-up was also chosen on the night, in the event that Ciara Bailey will be unable to contest the final in August. The runner up was Sarah Fleming, from Shannon Drive in Avondale, who is a student at WIT.
Four of the other finalists were also from Prima, namely Danielle Lauri, Erica Ryan, Vanessa Casey and Una Kelly, who all did Prima’s self-improvement and deportment course.
Organiser of this year’s Miss Waterford, Ross Allen, said he was delighted with the level of entry this year. “We had sixteen great contestants and there is no reason why Miss Ireland can’t be found in Waterford.” Ross Allen also thanked the sponsors of this year’s event, which included Axis Mundi, Faithlegg House Hotel, WLRfm, Flash’s Bar in High Street and A- Wear.

Alam ko maraming may gusto sa kanya for either World or Universe pero ang masasabi ko lang sa kanya is just follow Claudia Ortiz' footsteps. Try again next after your Miss Earth experience. Huwag nga lang gayahin yung makapal na make-up.

Regarding Miss Russia 2003, I don't believe it's the politics. She carried her gown well (though it was really really "unique" and very unvonventional), I guess it wasn't appealing to the judges. That gown was really risky.

An interesting article I translated from La Prensa Nicaragua... Read on...
Amelia Vega is arrogant- Miss Nicaragua Claudia Salmeron
Cellulites, plastic surgery, stupidity are just some things most beauty queens don't show in front of the cameras, but are truly existing. Our very own Miss Nicaragua, Claudia Salmerón, share some of her experiences and insights during the recently-concluded pageant.
The very moment they we arrived in Panama, the slavery began. We were lead by a contingent of security guards to the hotel, where we remained heavily-guarded until the day of the big event. In addition, a group of chaperones maintained our security and grooming. No relatives or family members could visit us. Of course, we could not help but be nervous everyday. At one point in time, some delegates had to be transferred to the hospital due to stress and fatigue, but the camaraderie mainly between the Latins, made everything bearable.
Claudia further revealed that Amelia had blisters on her feet. In fact, no one was spared from that problem. There were lots of events and functions, wherein the delegates had to stand for a long time wearing stillettos. The only consolation was, every 5 minutes, truckloads of food were offered to everyone. Hunger and starvation were not a problem, after all.
There was a case involving Miss Iceland, who got really ill. Blame it on stress and the refusal to eat. Miss Nigeria was another. Miss Iceland vomitted on her dress shortly before the Presentation Show. The entire gown was stained.
With whom did you get well along?
My roommate, Miss Panama. She had a great personality. I also got along well with Miss Peru. I will also treasure fond memories of another friend of mine, Miss Spain. She smoked regularly on the bathroom, because her roommate did not tolerate it.
How was Miss Dominican Republic?
Among the Latins, there was not much warm ties with her. Blame it on her arrogance. During the rehearsals, she stepped on Miss Turkey's foot, but never apologized. I was one of the few who congratulated her when she was crowned. The others opted not to... they all crowded in the dressing room, saying that they did not want to mingle with that witch.
What are other incidents that you want to share?
There are so many things I want to share, but now I only realized Miss Venezuela should have won. Miss Panama had lots of fanatical admirers who frightened , but thanks to the security that surrounded us, we were safe. Miss Spain had problems with Miss Dominican Republic.
Why do you think they did not choose you to be among the Top 15?
They considered many factors-- among them are economy and politics. This is a reason that the Miss Nicaragua organization is going to employ a new strategy for next year.
Translated from: La Prensa Nicaragua (http://www-ni.laprensa.com.ni/archivo/2003/junio/13/aquientrenos/rostros/rostros-20030613-01.html)

Her stepping down from the title didn't really create much buzz in the pageant world considering that her title was unheard by many. Was she following on the footsteps of Oxana Fedorova? And will this make judges look more than beauty and actually analyze the sincerity and commitment a contestant has from now on?
Dzejla and Amelia were both disliked by their 'batchmates'? Will Amelia suffer the same fate?

Building for Miss World Pageant Under Construction in Hainan
Construction on the cultural and exhibition center for the 2003 Miss World beauty pageant commenced on May 1 as scheduled in Sanya of south China's island province of Hainan.
The center is expected to be completed by Oct. 31 this year.
The first phase of the project includes building a 35-meter-tall tower, the main building, a square, a parking lot and a cruise ship wharf with a total floor space of 40,000 square meters. During the second phase, a recreation center will be built.
This is the first time for China to host the annual Miss World pageant. The decision was made at last year's contest.

Miss World Competition to be held in China as scheduled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Xinhuanet 2003-06-15 23:27:52
SANYA CITY, HAINAN PROVINCE, June 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The 53rd Miss World Competition is to be held in the city of Sanya in China's southernmost Hainan province, from Nov. 9 to Dec. 6 as scheduled, the first time China will have held the pageant.
Contenders from 117 countries and regions would converged on Sanya and the pageant would be televised live to those countries and regions, said sources with the Sanya municipal government on Sunday.
The cultural exhibition center, named the Crown of Beauty, is designed and built especially for this contest. Located by the scenic tropical Sanya river, the center covers a total area of 90,000 square meters with an investment of 120 million yuan (about 14.5 million US dollars).
The first-phase project includes building a main building, a square, a parking lot, a cruise ship wharf and auxiliary service facilities, covering a construction area of 40,000 square meters.
The Miss World Competition, which was launched in 1951 in London as part of the New Year celebrations in Britain at the sponsorship of Eric Morley, who died in the year 2000. And his widow Julia Morley succeeded him and is now executive chairperson of the competition's organizing agency.

Universal themes
The Miss Universe final is just the beginning for Miyako Miyazaki, who wants the world to see the beauty of Japanese culture. Chris Betros hears more.
http://metropolis.japantoday.com/xmg/479/479-IP-portrait-red.jpg http://metropolis.japantoday.com/xmg/479/479-IP-portrait.jpg
When Miyako Miyazaki steps onto the stage in Panama City for the Miss Universe finals on June 3, the audience won't be seeing the usual kimono-clad beauty from Japan. This year, Miss Japan will be dressed like a ninja-a stylish one, to be sure, reflecting the funkier mood of the contest in recent times. For the 25-year-old Miyazaki, who comes from Kumamoto Prefecture, winning the Miss Universe Japan title on April 14 was the culmination of six months' hard work and the beginning of a year during which she will be an ambassador for Japanese arts and culture.
"I still can't believe I was picked," she says demurely in the Harajuku offices of Miss Universe Japan. Not that she has had much time to savor the delight: the MUJ staff have had her busy preparing for the Panama finals. Besides giving countless media interviews, Miyazaki has been learning stage manners, as well as how to walk and talk for the final. Being a model for the past five years has been an enormous help for the 170cm-tall Miyazaki. She is taking English lessons but will use an interpreter on stage in order to better express herself. "For me the definition of beauty is not how we look. I'm not that confident prancing about on the stage in a swimsuit," she admits. "Beauty is on the inside-your way of thinking about others, your character, how you speak."
Miyazaki recalls seeing beauty contests on TV when she was young and marveling at all the beautiful people. "But I never thought I would ever enter a contest. It seemed like another world to me. Then last October, I heard about Miss Universe Japan and thought it would be a good experience to develop myself as a person and all my family and friends supported me. So I had an audition at my modeling agency." The rest, as they say, is ?@history. Miyazaki was one of 1,517 entrants (more than double the number who applied the previous year). She and nine other finalists spent six months preparing for the Japan final and doing promotions before her crowning.
The pageant has become big business in Japan since Frenchwoman Ines Ligron took over as national director of Miss Universe Japan in 1998 at Donald Trump's request. Ligron immediately rejuvenated the contest, turning it into a lucrative sponsorship event for major companies. For the next year, Miyazaki gets the use of a Renault Lutecia car, a specially designed crown with 100 pearls from Mikimoto, a complete wardrobe, a watch and free cosmetics from Nina Ricci, and a year's supply of vitamins and supplements from Naturally Plus.
"Miss" contests still draw a lot of criticism from some groups who claim they are demeaning to women. However, Miyazaki thinks there are more positives than negatives. "They are a great experience because we get to go places and do things we normally couldn't. We learn about other cultures and can get involved in raising awareness for real issues such as AIDS, poverty, education and so on," she says, adding that children's education is the issue closest to her heart.
In the six months since joining the contest, Miyazaki believes she has already changed a lot. For one thing, being left-handed, she has had to teach herself to write with her right hand because being a lefty is considered awkward in some parts of Japanese society. "I'm a Pisces, and Pisces have a very strong sensitivity," she says. More importantly, Miyazaki reckons she has become more self-confident and forward-looking. "I'm ready to challenge new things. I want to contribute to society as myself, not because I am Miss Universe Japan." Whether she wins the final or not, Miyazaki will have a busy year of engagements both in Japan and overseas. "It's a bit overwhelming because I am from a small country town and have only ever been abroad to Tahiti and South Korea," she says. During her travels, she wants to bring Japanese culture to the world, especially calligraphy (in which she is 8th dan), which she hopes to teach one day.
Having assumed the mantle of Miss Japan has put Miyazaki's regular routine temporarily on hold, which means she can't indulge her passions of swimming and basketball (not to mention eating cheesecake-for now, it's strawberries and watermelon). Striking a balance between her private and personal life is important, she emphasizes. "Fortunately, all my friends were my friends before I entered the contest, so nothing has changed there. We still hang out," says Miyazaki, who prefers the slower pace of country life. "It's too crowded in Tokyo and takes too long to get anywhere. Everybody is always in a hurry."
When asked if she has become a magnet for guys since winning the contest, Miyazaki is amused. "That might be fun. I like guys who set high standards for themselves, someone strong but who is also sensitive." And that would be...? "Ewan McGregor. I really loved him in Moulin Rouge."

I dont know kung legal ba mag benta dito, but I am selling these batch of tapes only for 2,500 pesos. Medyo lugi na ako dito , I was cheated by my supposed to be buyer, who never replied after informing her na tapos na yung mga tapes-her name is Desiree Solomon from Hawaii, just taking note baka nandito siya. They are good qualities, freshly recorded from their original source. Please, no individual purchase selling the tapes on a wholesale basis.
List of items as follows:
Ms Universe 1977,1982,1988
Ms World 1985,1986,1994(highlight)
Ms International 1986,1991,1997
Ms Venezuela 1986,1996 and 1997
Ms Brazil 1986&1993(highlights)
Hope I could find a buyer here. I already tried posting at Bidshot.com and Adpost.com pero no one seems interested.
You can also email me at: muvhsorder@hotmail.com, the tapes are ready for pickup. You could also text me at: 09178165710.

I think we all wanted our own bets to win say Miss Colombia, Miss Japan, or whoever, but I do think it's wrong to say na "ginusto" nila yang Amelia kasi there were competent panel of judges who also liked her. Besides, ITS NOT MISS CONGENIALITY PAGEANT!
Tama na nga iyan...

The Americas Are The Favorite Region From Which Miss Universe 2004 Will Emerge, According to Internet Bookmaker Intertops.com
ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The most beautiful women in the Universe come from The Americas at 3-2, according to internet bookmaker Intertops.com.

***Whoever will win Miss Ecuador 2004 will have a tremendous responsibility of bringing honor to her country.
Ecuador remains to be one of the most underrated participants in Miss Universe. The last time they made it was in 1981,
when Lucia Vinueza made it to the Top 12 in New York. The last time they won a special award was in 1992, when Maria

Miss Iraq officials have confirmed to the Pageant News Bureau (http://www.pageant.net/news/) that they are holding talks with the Miss Universe Organization about sending a contestant to Miss Universe 2004.
Under the arrangement they are seeking, the winner at Miss Iraq would compete at Miss Universe, the first runner-up would compete at Miss World and the second runner-up would go to Miss International.
The Miss Iraq Pageant has carried on bravely for years despite the isolation of Iraq, which was particularly at odds with the United States (headquarters of Miss Universe) and Britain (headquarters of Miss World). A U.S.-British military campaign ended the longtime Saddam Hussein regime in Baghdad and has given the two countries a strong role in Iraq, so the political isolation is over.
***Hmmm... not bad... at least MU pa rin ang priority! Haha! :glee:

It's not Jo-Ann Strauss' fault if she failed to make the finals in Bayamon. She did break the streak, but 2001 from your very own words and other people's words was very competitive. Some people are just insecure, wanting to cover their own vulnerability by finding the faults of other people. They rarely contribute naman. This "I am ever so knowing" front is just a big cover up, in reality, they don't really know nothing at all (obvious ba?). We could easily get that in the nearest encyclopedia website.

At si Jensie pa ang nakahanap (to think di siya Miss World fanatic). Unlike other people diyan na puro SALITA Sobrang IN YOUR FACE don't you think?

I may be logged in here early, but unlike you and Lara I don't bombard this board with post like the two of you. We live in an independent and democratic country right? so you don't have the right, not even a small percentage to dictate what I must do, what I shall do, because of the fact that you don't feed me, you don't pay me and most of all you don't own me. She continued her legal training at the High Wooding Law School. In her final year of study, two months before writing her final exams to qualify as an Attorney at Law in her native country, Wendy won the MISS UNIVERSE title in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1998. In June of 1998, she was honored by the United Nations with the title of Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS. Additionally, The Hibiscous Foundation was one of Wendy’s dreams that became reality. She established this organization to heighten AIDS awareness in Trinidad and Tobego and give assistance, financial and otherwise, to children’s homes in the twin island republic. She completed law school and currently resides in New York City where she is pursuing a career as a music artist in the pop-jazz genre. Wendy has also co-hosted BK’s The Heat airing on BET.
