After Amelia, it seems Denise winning in her home country (and bagging almost all of the awards) doesn't seem so bad after all. At least even from the pics, you can sense she has a warm personality. Very nice aura. You can't help but miss her, no wonder people consider her as one of the best Miss Universe.

Even if she won in her home country, she was never hated. Though they said it was fixed, it was just the right girl in the wrong place. Though it was a rough road for her at first, her personality and character was never questioned.

Here is 21-year old Choi Yoon-Young, who won the crown. The crown serves as her entrance ticket to Miss Universe 2004 set for May next year.

i believed that it was 2001 - the BEST MISS UNIVERSE Pageant. the national costume, the swimsuits and the evening gown... lahat ang gaganda. kaya im sure during that time talagang nahirapan ang mga judges. with denise, evelina, eva and others around....

18-year old Marie-Jose Hnein was crowned Miss Lebanon 2003 in Beirut on May 23rd. She was the Elite Model Look winner for Lebanon in '99.

I love Stefanie in the evening gown. The dress was perfect for her. Everything fell at the right place at the right time.

Jensie, you're certainly right. Denise was the only deserving winner of the Photogenic award in the last three years. When I learned of Carla winning the Photogenic award I simply blurted "rigged". personally think that Demetra Eleftheriou should've won last year and for this year either Israel or Venezuela.

Miss Universe is 'immature'

Johannesburg - Powder puffs are flying following the crowning of an 18-year-old high school student as the new Miss Universe.

Amelia Vega, who became the first beauty from the Dominican Republic to win this sought-after title, was such an unpopular choice that only 15 of the 71 competitors attended the crowning ball.

During the three weeks leading up to the crowning ceremony, Vega was considered to be "very immature" and was involved in several "incidents" with the other contestants.

The largest international website for beauty competitions, globalbeauties.com, openly questioned the Vega choice on Thursday.

Miss SA should have won

A previous poll conducted by the website indicated that Miss South Africa, Cindy Nell, the favourite amongst her fellow competitors and beauty experts, should have been crowned Miss Universe.

The website said not only did Cindy give the most mature answers to the questions she was asked, but she looked stunning in the swimwear and evening wear categories.

"The only thing that counted against her was that she wasn't from a Latin American country, especially in a year during which a major Spanish television group had obtained the rights to broadcast the crowning ceremony for the first time to Spanish speakers in North America."

One of Miss Universe 2003's prizes is an appearance on this television station. People have been complaining for years about the alleged Spanish domination. For the past four years, the competition has been held in Spanish-speaking countries and it will be held in Ecuador next year.

Meanwhile, Indian newspapers started posing questions on Thursday why their representative - for the first time in 11 years - did not end up as one of the 15 semi-finalists.

Nevermind the results, she misses home

BARELY eight hours after her international television debut - watched by an estimated 600 million people in 117 countries - Miss Universe/Singapore Bernice Wong was ready to make her way home.

The Miss Universe 2003 finals was shown live on TV from Panama yesterday.

That US$250,000 ($430,800) diamond tiara eluded Bernice and went to Miss Dominican Republic Amelia Vega (right) instead, but she was still happy.

'I can't wait to come home,' Bernice told The New Paper yesterday.

'I miss my dogs, my boyfriend, my parents.

'And I miss the food so much - Miss Malaysia and I keep talking about char kway teow and kway chap.'

It was 4am in Panama when we spoke to Bernice, who was still packing.

She left on a 7am flight to Las Vegas, where she will be spending three days on a personal vacation.

GETTING ON WITH LIFE

'I've been up 24 hours, I'm tired. I'm happy that it's all over. I can't wait to get on with the rest of my life.'

She admitted she was disappointed that she didn't crack the Top 15.

'Of course I had hoped to get in, but I was happy there was an Asian representative in the Top 5, even if it wasn't me.' Miss Japan Miyako Miyazaki was the sole Asian in the Top 15, and ended up being the pageant's fourth runner-up.

First runner up was Miss Venezuela Mariangel Ruiz, and second runner up Miss South Africa Cindy Nell.

But there was a steady buzz around Bernice that indicated that she had a fighting chance.

She said: 'There was an article in the main newspaper that said I was a sure shot for Top 5.

'But the article was in Spanish, and the person who translated for me left out big chunks.'

Bernice confessed: 'I felt the pressure to succeed.'

She was not the only one. Bernice described the backstage tension: 'Before the contest, there were girls praying and some became very anxious.'

When the first cut came 30 minutes into the event, the anxious girls turned teary.

Bernice said: 'My heart was beating wildly when they were announcing the Top 15. That was the only time I was really anxious.

'Miss Thailand, Miss Panama and Miss Spain were in tears. Miss Thailand (Yaowalak Trisurat) took it especially bad.'

On the other extreme, Miss Malaysia Elaine Daly, and Miss India Nikita Anand, decided to party after the event instead of mope.

Bernice gave the party a miss, deciding to let loose with a bunch of Singaporeans.

'They are the Singapore club, working for companies like Kenneth Cole and Tommy Hilfiger. They're so sweet - they said if I was going to stay another day, they'll show me around Panama.'

So instead, they hung around and spent an hour talking.

'I learned more about the country in an hour with them than I did in three weeks there,' said Bernice.

Post-results, there were black faces too. She would not give names but said one European contestant - upon not being named in the Top 15 - refused to leave her dressing room.

'You had the choice of going back on stage to congratulate the others, but she refused.'

That temper tantrum could be due to the fact that some of the contestants were not happy with the results.

'The general feel was that the winner sometimes tried too hard to get attention.

'Many of the girls did not like that.'

But Bernice assured that there were no catfights backstage.

Still, returning to the podium as a backup dancer was a tad tough for her.

'We were just going through the motions.

'But it was nice to be part of a grand show that was telecast worldwide.'

After the contest, Bernice spoke to her parents and boyfriend.

'They had been very comforting. My mother said, 'It's okay, you did your best'.'

Glad to finally be on her way back to Singapore, Bernice repeated: 'I can't wait to get home.'

Kailan maco-confirm na Ecuador will host Miss Universe 2004? Wow, I didn't know that Czech Republic was on the running for hosting the event. Dati pa ba sila nag file nang intent? Or is it because nag place si Katerina?

Gusto ko sa Czech Republic na lang. Para naman sa Europe for a change (last time ata yung nanalo si Margarita Moran) and the fact na maraming Hollywood outfits na ang nagpunta sa Czech Republic to shoot their films (xXx, Mission Impossible).

Question: Meron ba sa inyong nag visit dati pa nung website na To's Page of Miss Universe Mania? As in nung nasa geocities pa ata yung hostng website?

Kasi dati meron siyang parang portion na what's your favourite songs from Miss Universe and you can download the whole song kung nag top 10 yung mga songs. They are *.rm files.

I would like kasi to have the opening number in 1992 and 1996. Kung meron man sa inyo meron nun, like nadownload niya dati. Kasi I have the 1993 and 1994 openings, i could upload it somewhere kung meron interested.

Yes folks, it has been reported (http://www.presidencia.gov.ec/noticias.asp?noid=1338) that the Miss Universe pageant will travel to the South American continent for the 2nd time, when it broadcasts live from Quito, Ecuador in May next year. This has yet to be officially confirmed though.

I strongly believe that it's the 1st time ever for Miss France to be held outside mainland France.

I like both, but the original one is much better. Representing Canada's north and newest territory Nunavut, which became part of the Canadian federation in 1999 after the Northwest Territories was split in to two forming Nunavut to the east and retaining the Northwest Territories to west. I hope the next Canadian national costume will represent the spring season in Canada. I haven't experienced spring in Canada but from what I can see in photos and description of friends and family spring is the season to be. I hope to visit Canada by next spring, but hopefully I'll be able to make a trip this coming fall. Just like to add this one, hopefully Vancouver gets to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. In my opinion another hard act to follow for the next Miss India's is Diana Hayden. She was also a model for L'Oreal and she's made several appearance at Cannes and certainly a beautiful Anglo-Indian mixed. She won Miss World with ease.

It seems, every year Osmel's thinks of tactics to create a fuss over his Miss Venezuelas so they can be talked about and be the center of attention- give them publicity so to speak. For me: The judges have their own reason why Carla did not make it and why Amelia Vega won, but I do hope people get to respect the decision of the judges who have selected the winner because the MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT IS STILL A COMPETITION AND NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST WHOM THE WINNER S SELECTED BY THE PEOPLE BUT BECAUSE THERE ARE CONNOISSEURS WHO WERE TASKED TO SELECT THE WINNER. I just do hope we learn to respect the judges for their decision because they were tasked to do so for that matter.

I think even if Amelia is a "bad girl" and even if the ladies do not like her, perhaps, the contest was not created for the sake of selecting MISS GOODY-TWO-SHOES UNIVERSE bt rather a MISS UNIVERSE. It is still a BEAUTY PAGEANT;therefore, the judges have decided that Miss Dominican Republic is right for the crown...
I think it has been a misconception for us Filipinos that the only means for winning the crown is by who gave the right answer and right being what they think the candidate should answer. Sometimes we have to understand EVEN TO THOSE WHO WILL BE JUDGING that we select not only on Q&A but also on the whole packaging of the lady.

By the way, good luck to MRS. JOANNE ZAPANTA SANTOS - PRIMERO (Miss Tourism International '97 and Bb. Pilipinas - Universe '97) who is set to compete on June 23 for the Mrs. World Pageant.

Congratulations to Laia Manetti, Miss Italy Universe 2004. She's another standout modellic beauty from the fashion capital of the universe.

This is Deepti Gujral she joined Femina Miss India 2001 but was highly ignored. But 2 years later she won the Gladrags Megamodel 2003, a super model search counterpart of Femina. Look at her transformation now. But since she won another title now, I doubt if Femina can "wooh" her in. This is what a Miss India should be. This is talented Indian designer b[]Ritu Beri[/b] receiving best designer of the year - 2003 award during the bollywood fashion awards. Her designs are far more diverse and modern compare to another Ritu- Ritu Kumar. She has reached big time for she even has fashion shows as far as Paris. I used to see her fashion shows on F TV. I thought Magali Febles, the head of Miss Universe PR has a rule that a girl cannot join anymore if she joined an international pageant. That's why Miss San Juan did not join Miss Earth remember? A good move for her.

Ashlea Talbot, Miss Universe Australia, was on Seven Sunrise this morning - being interviewed about her recent participation in the 2003 Miss Universe Pageant in Panama. She wore a white suit, brown sling backs and natural hair. She looked fresh and very natural and it was the same with her demeanour. She was very funny and quite candid about her experience...

She praised the Panamanians for their hospitality, saying that they were all treated like royalty. She said none of them were put on diets or rigorous training during the competition, saying they had access to buffets and buffets of delicious food everyday. She then said that there werent really any "model" types around, and that they were all just girls doing girly things like "sleep overs" and "painting each others nails".

She commented on the fact that a lot of girls went through an incredible amount of preparation, even using the word "manufactured" and relayed the story of Miss Bahamas telling her about her six day a week training during a five month period pre MU. She laughed that she only had a week to prepare compared to the other girls (which probably showed). Ashlea also mentioned that she didnt think Miss Universe existed anymore because it is not publicised in Australia any more.

She also laughed when David Koch said to her that she was voted as having the worse national costume! But she pretty much redeemed herself by telling the interviewers that the other girls were so jealous of her because she was comfortable and could do the dance moves comfortably - while girls like Miss Canada couldnt even move!

David then asked her if it was the same as the movie "Miss Congeniality" and if there were any b*tches. She hesitated, giggled and tried to skirt around the question but David was on to her like a terrier. She finally admitted "there was ONE". They asked her what she did and if she was horrible to which she answered "she was your typical pageant queen (image-wise). She was very catty. At one point she thought that one girl was standing too close to her during the presentation show so she stamped on her foot!" After all the laughter she then went on by saying "then during the swimsuit competition she told miss spain that she was fat and ugly, making her cry...and miss spain is gorgeous!" and to top it off apparently the favourite line going around the delegates during the pageant was the comment made by this particular contestant (in spanish) "I AM THE QUEEN. I AM LEAVING (hair toss)". The contestants laughed about this and made a whole joke about it during the final days and would say the same when they left a room or a group discussion.

When David asked her if this unnamed b*tch did well, Ashlea nodded her head and said "yes". When they asked her if this girl won, Ashlea looked down, laughed and tried not to answer the question but as David wouldnt give up, Ashlea finally said "no comment!"
