Actually, jensie, hindi daw ngayon ang final screening which was accroding to some of the managers. Indefinite nga.

Accordinmg to Mabuhay Beauties and some of the managers there, Caroline Lontoc has already signed up and last week pa daw (Saturday). Kasama niya sina Gretchen Malalad, Angelica Sandel, and Shonalyn Go.

If my memories serve me right:
Angelica Sandel is Global Queen Philippines 1st Runner Up, Miss Manila 2002 Semifinalist, and Aubrey Miles' sister.

Gretchen Malalad is a national taekwondo athlete, Miss Manila 2002 semifinalist, and a bronze medalist for taekwondo in the last SEA games.

Shonalyn Go is the reigning Miss Baguio. By the way, Miss Baguio organizers are spearheaded by Anne Lorraine Kier.

And Caroline Lontoc...Miss Manila 1999, a cum laude graduate of DLSU (with a degree in education for psychology), and a former Student Council officer (legislative assembly representative).

This year's Binibini is going to be exciting. Ang daming magaganda na may "K" talaga unlike recent years....Did you see Cindy Kurleto's new picture sa front page ng mabuhaybeauties.com? Grabe, sobrang gorgeous maski na konti lang ang make-up! It looks like she got a tan or nag-bronzer. She's definitely my top bet so far. I also like Angelica Sandel, pinay na pinay and she has defined features. Angeline Costorphan is a little too mestiza for my taste but she's pretty naman. Kate Baesa, Mabuhay Beauty #3, is really smart supposedly. BE's bet Sheryl Lou Franco doesn't register too well in photos, but I heard she looks good in person - pictures don't do her justice.

PS. KJ ang sasabihin ko pero hindi ba magagalit ang Mabuhay Beauties na naka "hot link" ang images nila dito? Whenever someone loads this thread, they have to pay for the bandwidth. It adds up din. Kawawa naman.

It seems Lebanon won't be seeing action in Miss Universe for the 2nd time in a row.

According to the Miss Lebanon Message Board (http://www.voy.com/102831/), the Miss Lebanon 2003 pageant will take place on October 12, 2003.

I'm just not sure if LITACO, the Lebanese pageant authority, will nominate a girl for Panama.

Bethany Kehdy was nominated to represent Lebanon in Miss World 2002 last month. She was 1st runner-up to Christina Sawaya during Miss Lebanon 2001.

Beauty Capital...well definitely hindi south dahil morena at maliliit kami....*** mga taga North part...the further you go north kase puro ang puputi (with rosy lips and cheeks without makeup! and good skin too!), tapos "lithe" body, and tall talaga...kaya usually, *** mga nananalo sa mga modeling contest e nanggagaling sa mga northern provinces....Shanghainese girls are okay naman, well edge nila is....fashionista na rin sila....cosmo city na kase sila eh! Sabi nga, they can be compared to New York...! And even friends who have gone to both NY and Shanghai says that Shanghai gives them a feeling that they are in NY and some even says that Shanghai is better! :D

I believe that it's how Zhangzhiyi is packaged...I mean, of all the actresses, she has the best marketing program..for one, her movie got into the Academy Awards...if Michelle exudes maturity in Crouching Tiger (Btw, I'm not sure if you know that she's a beauty queen back in Malaysia!), Zhang exudes freespirit and independence (that reflect most of the youth) tapos she has the fresh young looking face that Hollywood loves (that's why there's Leonardo De Caprio back in Titanic and Natalie Portman and so on and on and on....) That's my 2 cents. :)

Zhao Wei *** name nya....(tama kaya *** translate ko...basta ganun yung bigkas hehehe)....Sumikat yan kase pumunta sya sa Taiwan to play a role of a princess in a very popular Taiwan series na based on a Taiwanese romance novel...tapos hindi lang sa Taiwan sumikat *** series, pati China, Hong Kong, and practically all Chinese communities ....kaya un! NBC is doing a survey on the Miss Universe, USA, etc. pageants i guess to obtain viewer perceptions on the world of pageantry. This shows a good effort to bring a quality pageant in 2003. It takes a good 10 minutes to complete but I think all of us pageant fans should complete it. Here's the website

I've noticed this certain trend in Femina that the taller girls are sent to Miss World and the shorter ones, usually the brainier ones, are sent to Miss Universe.

With only 33 confirmed delegates crowned in their respective national pageants and barely five (5) months away before the Miss Universe pageant, it is definitely crazy and outrageous to see Top 10 prediction lists this early. One poster at the Pageant Fans' HQ Messageboard (http://www.voy.com/14733/) even claimed superiority when he listed his predictions. That crazy.

I've been reading on most Panamanian sites that the target delegate count for Panama is 84. But then, owing to past pageants, it would be definitely safe to round it to 80-85. This is the realistic goal of Miss Universe in every pageant. Let's all see if this year's pageant will beat Trinidad & Tobago's record of 84 delegates.

Bb. Pilipinas Universe Karen Agustin is expected to announce the official coronation date of Bb. Pilipinas 2003 in Master Showman any Saturday ahead. Previous titleholders have done the same in the late-night show. While my sources have not informed me of any date yet, expect an announcement-- official or unofficial-- soon.

I'm skeptic on Maricar Balagtas joining Bb. Pilipinas once again. She already won Miss Globe 2001, and I strongly believe this will be the greatest impediment since former titleholders are no longer allowed to compete for another time.

After tense preparation of a month, the press conference of the final Miss Universe. China Pageant 2003 was held ceremoniously in Shandong News Edifice this morning. Sun Guangyuan, the assistance of the nomarch; Li Deming, the director of Shandong Tourism Department; Paula Shugart, the president of the headquarters of Miss Universe organization; attended the press conference.

According to what Li Deming said, this was the national wide electing activity that sponsored by official side for the first time, and Shandong had unique conditions to sponsor this electing activity. Shandong was a big province of economic, as a littoral one of China, which GDP (gross domestic product) exceeded 100 million yuans in 2002, and account for 1/10 of entire country; simultaneously, it was also an old-line and cultural prosperous province. This series of electing activity will open an era of holding international progressive culture and tourism activities in Shandong.

From the press conference, our reporter learned of that the electing activity, which authorized by Miss Universe Organization, sponsored by Shandong Tourism Department, Shandong TV Station and Qilu Evening jointly, undertaken by Shandong Intercontinental Culture Communication Center will be held in Shandong from April 18 to April 19. Cammy Gregory Colby originally from Kentucky, was a teacher in Paris, Tennessee at the time of being crowned MISS TENNESSEE USA 1993. At the Miss USA pageant, Cammy was selected in the Top 12. She graduated from Murray State University with a degree in early childhood education. She was named as a finalist in Walt Disney World's Teacher of the Year 2000.

After ten years as an educator in Tennessee, Cammy went to work as a pharmaceutical sales specialist with Abbott Laboratories. She was the mother of two children, Leighton (5 years) and Olivia (2 years). Cammy suffered a brain aneurysm while at work on Friday, January 3rd and passed away on Saturday, January 4th in Jackson, Tennessee. Cammy will be greatly missed by all those blessed to have known her.

"We deeply regret that this action was necessary, but other commitments made it difficult for Lynsey to dedicate the time necessary for travel and obligations to our corporate sponsors," Sylvia Stark, the organization's spokeswoman, said in a release Tuesday evening. "It was felt by all involved that it would be best for her to step aside at this time."

Ms. Bennett's mother Marnie said from her Ottawa home that her daughter was blindsided by the news Tuesday morning in Hamilton. Ms. Bennett was to make an appearance at a cancer fundraiser in the southern Ontario city, but was met by Miss Canada International personnel at the airport and told that she no longer held the title. "I think she's in shock — this came right out of the blue," said Marnie Bennett, who was to pick up her daughter at the Ottawa airport Tuesday night. "She has never missed any appearances, not any.... We don't know what this is about."

Lynsey Bennett, 23, made headlines when she was the first Miss World contestant to leave Nigeria — where the November pageant was supposed to take place — because of the violence the event had sparked in the Muslim city of Abuja. Organizers eventually caved in to pressure and moved the pageant to London. The event was rescheduled to Dec. 7, but Ms. Bennett failed to make the first cut down to 20 semifinalists.

She was crowned Miss Canada International in August and, according to her mother, was looking forward to fulfilling her platform of promoting physical fitness in Canadian youth. 'Miss Canada International' representatives were not immediately available for comment. The news of Lynsay's dethronement were released, ironically, 4 days before rival pageant 'Miss Universe Canada' selects their winner.

VENEZUELA AIN'T JOINING MISS UNIVERSE 2003!

Due to the present and serious socio-political and economic situation, after the suspensions of the currency sale, the right to the deprived television transmitters, the devaluation of the bolivar and the suspension of the consultative referendum, Venezuela will not be represented in Miss Universe 2003.

Venevisión, which owns Organization Miss Venezuela, has already suffered 52 consecutive days of paralysis. It would not be able to support all the expenses needed for the country's participation in the upcoming international beauty pageant. It also no longer has the budget to pay for the right to transmit of the event live in June.

Miss Venezuela 2003 might not take place this year either. The reigning Miss Venezuela 2002, Mariángel Ruiz, might go to Miss Universe 2004, as long as the country's situation returns to normal in the course of the next months.

This would be the first time since 1959 wherein Venezuela would not be represented in the Miss Universe pageant.

Venezuela is also not sending a delegate to the upcoming Miss Atlantico Internacional 2003 pageant set for February 8th in Uruguay.

The organizers of the Miss Madagascar pageant have promised that the Miss Madagascar 2002 winner will be sent to Panama for Miss Universe 2003.

Rasoamananarivo Haingo Nirina of Antannanarivo won the coveted crown last November 23rd at the Antshow Center.

Her participation in Panama marks Madagascar's return to Miss Universe after a 42-year absence. :up:

I thought a few points would be able to clear up what's going on in Venezuela right now:
1. The potential withdrawal of Mariangel Ruiz is not a hoax. It has been known for quite some time that Mariangel's participation in Miss Universe 2003 has been in serious jeopardy due to the strike and she herself just last week publicly said that it was likely she would not go. Belleza Venezolana has posted the news, which is about as official as you can get before the OMV itself comments.
2. Five months is not a long time to go if you are the OMV, which spends an average of six months to prepare its delegate. At this time, the OMV is extremely dependent on Venevision to fund its activities because of the drop in corporate sponsorship and the extreme financial crisis which has struck the organization. Because of the political situation, Venevision will most likely not be able to fulfill its financial backing to the pageant.
3. Miss Universe operates on a sliding scale for its pageant licenses, with Venezuela occupying the higher end along with Japan. It has been reported that the franchise fee for Miss Universe this year rose to an all-time high of US $60,000. The OMV spends an average of $60-90,000 to prepare its delegates to Miss Universe and Miss World. The base cost for Mariangel Ruiz's participation, therefore, is at least six digits.
4. A few weeks ago, it was reported that Osmel Sousa had decided to recall his team to the headquarters of the OMV in Caracas so that Mariangel Ruiz could resume her training, which had been interrupted by the strike. Chepa Candela, not the accurate source in itself, nevertheless wrote something to the effect of "the professors of the pageant are ready to work, but there is no gasoline to drive them to the OMV..." Discounting that story, it should still be realized that these are the country's top artisans and they cannot work for free.
5. Furthermore, with the nation in strike, obviously the fashion industry has been crippled. The OMV relies on the donations of the country's top designers to form each delegate's wardrobe. Claudia Moreno's was valued at an all-time high of nearly US $300,000 (this is including 76 dresses and her national costume). Although wardrobes have since been toned down and even, in Goizeder Azua's and Eva Ekvall's cases, recycled, they would still take half a year to assemble. You can argue that Mariangel Ruiz can simply take borrowed clothes, but she nevertheless cannot participate if there is no money to prepare and register her.
6. Eva Ekvall's article has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SITUATION and I deplore anyone who would use it against her. It in fact is one of the most compelling and eloquently spoken pieces anyone has produced in the middle of this crisis, and in fact I know many who have difficulty believing a teenager wrote that piece-except for the fact that Eva herself reminds the reader that it's only been two years since she was 17 and won Miss Venezuela.
7. On that subject, the pageant has long been politicized, but Eva Ekvall is hardly the only titleholder to speak out. Mariangel Ruiz, Melissa Wolf, Barbara Palacios, Irene Saez, Catherine Fullop, Claudia Moreno, Pilin Leon, Ruddy Rodriguez, and many others have made a stance in this standoff. Osmel Sousa himself has refrained from making any political gestures but Mariangel Ruiz has come out and suggested that change in leadership may be necessary. For that I think she should be commended-she is one of the few beauty queens in history to take a political role. Most only talk about peace, as Ann van Elsen noted this year, but she and Eva Ekvall and the other Miss Venezuelas (and competitors) are actually acting.


A one-year hiatus on the stage of universal beauty is the least of Venezuela's worries right now. We have seen Goizeder Azua speak out on Nigeria's situation, and we have now seen Mariangel Ruiz among others speak out on Venezuela's. If anything, this proves that the OMV, even financially strapped and in the middle of a political crisis, has recruited women who are not only among the world's most beautiful but also well-spoken and courageous. If Venezuela's situation DOES NOT improve in the next few months, I know that Mariangel Ruiz herself would never choose to go to Panama while her country verges on one of its greatest crises in history. Venezuela achieves its success because as Cynthia Lander said, its queens are "heroes" for its people. Mariangel and Goizeder are in Venezuela right now for a cause that is greater than any international beauty crown.

It is your choice as to where you stand in this political battle, but it is not up to any of us to decide where Mariangel and her organization choose to go.

Tomorrow, pressure will be greatest for the following delegates:

PANAMA- Need I say more? Hometown queen Stefanie also wants a back-to-back victory.

VENEZUELA- Paglusot sa butas ng karayom ang pinagdaanan ni Mariangel just to participate this year. She was definitely sent there to win! And besides, the last winner back in '86 was also from Venezuela.

COLOMBIA- Panama was a former province of Colombia. Diana is also pressured to make it, after her country's absence in the MU semis since 2001.

RUSSIA- Olesya was definitely sent to redeem Oxana (and Russia for that matter) of her lost glory.

ECUADOR- Since they would be hosting MU next year, I'm sure Andrea would love to win this year para tuloy ang ligaya next year.

TURKEY- The reigning Miss World is from Turkey. I'm sure Ozge would want to win to continue her country's streak.

Though Miss France this year does not come from Madamme de Fonatany's Organization, and to think this gown was the same gown she wore back in Miss World 2001, she has greatly improved. Another girl I want out of the semis. Before the pageant a lot of people consider her a front runner. But when the girls arrived, she has become this year's most controversial girl. News went around that she's suffering from "diva syndrome" thinking she already had won. She's mean to her fellow delegates and rumors has it she even called Miss Spain fat before the swimsuit prelims.

Last year's Miss Dominican Republic, Ruth Ocumarez also had a big head- so over confident. Is this the sickness of the Dominican girls? Quite an irony that Miss Venezuela this year is considered one of the sweetest and friendliest girls (even if we all know that this country has plenty to brag about), she manages to keep her two feet on the ground.

She won the Best in National Costume, and for the past 3 years, whoever the top 3 winners for best costume end up out of the semis. Hoping this jinx works on her. hehehe
