(December 23, 2002) Vietnam's tourism pulling power was highlighted last week by the visit of Miss Universe 2002 Justine Pasek.

Pasek who hails from Panama, admits she has fallen in love which Vietnam's beauty during her short stay which Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Pham Tu said reflects the nation's growing reputation as a hot destination for international visitors.


"Having read books and seen a lot of pictures about the beauty spots in Vietnam I know this is a beautiful country. Today, on the way from Hanoi to Halong Bay, I have seen the beauty of the Vietnamese countryside. This beauty will carve an impression on me for ever," she told Vietnam Investment Review.


She said Hanoi's old quarter was unique as it combined a busy commercial center with the nations' centuries old culture.


"I have seen Vietnamese are very friendly, outgoing and social. This is a big advantage for Vietnam to develop tourism. I have met a Vietnamese boy (a tourist guide at the shopping center on the way to Halong Bay who can speak English, French and learns Spanish by himself. To me, it is a great example of dedication and desire to learn," she said.

The Visages Model Group owns the Bulgarian Miss World and Miss Universe franchises and licenses. It is owned by Evgenia Kalkandieva, Miss Bulgaria 1995 and Miss World 1995 semi-finalist.

Every year, Evgenia gets models from her agency to compete in the most prestigious Bulgarian pageant-- the Miss Bulgaria pageant held every March. The winner goes to Miss World, while the runners-up go to Miss Universe and Miss Europe respectively.

She is Miss Salamanca Patricia Ledesma, 21, 5'10" and would be competing in Miss Spain come March. I was able to go to Salamanca just last November, making her a sentimental favorite of mine.

Just a bit of knowledge about Salamanca. It is in this region of Spain where the Castillian Spanish originated, that's the reason why a lof of people go to Salamanca to learn Spanish. If you listen closely, the way the people speak Spanish here is clearer and a lot slower than the people from other parts of Spain, let's say Madrid. In Madrid, their Spanish are so fast.

It seems that Argentina along with Uruguay are the least "Latin" among the South American countries. Compared to their neighbors up north they are more European (not to mention having European features) than Latin. And their number one priority is football and not beauty pageants.

This year's Festival de Viña del Mar is set to take place in Chile from February 19-24, 2003. It is a singing contest wherein different artists from all over the world (and Chile, of course) converge and outdo each other.

The Miss Viña Chile 2003 pageant is an important activity held after the culmination of the festival. It will take place in March right after the festival proper. Its winner will represent Chile in Miss Universe 2003 set for May 31 in Panama.

THE Trinidad and Tobago leg of the 2003 Miss Universe Pageant was rigged to ensure that Miss San Fernando, Faye Alibocus, took home the crown at the Centre of Excellence last Saturday night.

So says an insider in the production team, whosaid he was also speaking on behalf of some of the delegates/contestants.
The Caribbean Communications Network (CCN), which publishes the Express newspaper, is also accused of shamelessly manipulating the scores and rules of the competition.
Among the most blatant misdeeds was the robbery of points from Miss St. Augustine, Donna Pierre a journalist of the rival Wire newspaper who had the leading score going into the final night of competition, but never made it to the top three.
Concerned citizens are calling on the sponsors of the seven-month long charade at least 45 sponsors in addition to the Express and TV6 to demand answers from the organisers.
Even local dress designers were ripped off, having to dip into their pockets to put out a dress, with their names mentioned in a brief segment as the only reward for their contribution to the show.

Insiders say the rigging and rip-off reached a new low on the day before the actual competition.

“Donna was leading in the interview segment, which was judged along with the swimsuit on Friday, the day before the show, at the Trinidad Hilton.

“But by Saturday it was discovered that she was trailing Faye Alibocas by one point.

“How that happened, no one knows, up to now.

“Incidentally, Faye seemed in a mess after her interview with the judges, and was all nervous and worried after she came out of the room,” the Pageant production source told TnT Mirror.

“But strangely, she was still placed ahead of everyone going into the final night of competition.

“No one knows where that came from, since Faye is a really slow-thinker and not very articulate.

“At no time of the show was the slate ever clean, so if you did extremely well in the interview stage, it would automatically carry through.

“And if 40 points was the maximum for the interview session, and swimsuit accounted for just 20 points, that would speak for itself.

“But that was the first hint of the rigging that ensured that Alibocus pulled through,” he observed, with disgust.

“Her singing ability was deliberately highlighted in the pre-set questions, and she really made some hay with that.

“But you can’t ask a professional to sing in a competition like this, and not expect the judges to be influenced.

“It was a clear disadvantage to the rest of the girls, who would suddenly have to think of something to do to outshine the singer in the show.

“Donna was named among the six semi finalists, maybe because it would have been too obvious to leave her out.

“But then there was an inordinate delay, again, in naming the three finalists, during which two
commercial breaks were taken.

“We suspect that they may have changed the scores to get Donna out, since she would have definitely aced Faye in answering the final questions,” our source noted.

“So they included someone who wouldn’t challenge Faye, opting for the 19-year-old Miss Tunapuna, Magdalene Walcott, who is pretty, but embarrassed herself when she spilled some green verbs during an interview in The Morning Edition.

“Miss Brazil, Leah-Mari Guevara was kept in the final three to make it appear credible, since she was an obvious contender.

“During the rehearsals, the girls had to pick random questions from a bowl, but nobody warned them about pre-set questions.

“So, how come a question was asked to highlight Faye’s singing?

“They were not supposed to ask anyone to sing in any section they were judging.

“It was clearly overdone,” he stressed.

“Either Donna or Leah-Mari would have won the crown that night, if the competition was not rigged.

“It was a pity to see how they used those girls as puppets all along, and how this fears became flesh as the final night drew closer.

“For example, all along, for seven months, they pounded into their brains that articulation and intelligence was if paramount importance.

“Then, with just two weeks to go, they suddenly changed the tune, relegating it to fourth on the list, telling the participants that it is more about being beautiful and charming.

“Again, was it appropriate to have the Kerrygold ad being played on prime-time television, highlighting her Miss Physique award when the same was not done for Miss Lux Personal Style, Leah-Mari?” our informant asked incredulously.

“Miss San Fernando was the preferred choice of the CCN Group from the very first weekend, when the girls were screened.

“Although scores of girls were screened, the Express featured only a photo of Faye in a swim suit.

“For the seven months they kept highlighting her singing ability, and everyone noticed that she developed an attitude that made her aloof from the rest of the girls,” the member of the production team explained.

“At almost every engagement they would call on her to sing.

“It was especially ridiculous when she even sang for Orville London, the THA Chief Secretary, during our visit to Tobago.

“It was always a case of the rest of the girls just making up numbers.

“In one instance on the Road to Miss Universe Television series, they featured a profile of two girls, Daniella Wade and Thema Looby, but the feature still ended with a clip showing Faye singing,” he observed with a sarcastic laugh.

“It was quite unnecessary, and also going against the rules of far competition, from the organisers, themselves.

“The girls even made it clear to the organisers, at one stage, during a session, but they never paid attention to that.

“It’s like they wanted to brainwash people that she was the best among the lot, when she certainly wasn’t the best all-rounder,” he noted.

But that was not the full extent of the unprofessional manner in which the CCN folks conducted themselves.
He continued: “Sometimes training sessions were held on a Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no lunch provided and not even refreshments for the delegates.

“And we, in the production team, had to work under similar pressure, also.

“Imagine, the competitors were given no stipend for seven months, and sometimes we felt sorry for them.

“Appearances were badly scheduled too, and sometimes the dates and times of engagements were changed at short notice, which was not usually convenient to some of the girls who also had to keep up with their jobs, if only to maintain a presence in the competition.

“There was neither official transport nor travelling allowance to get to and from engagements, either. Sometimes, they would only give you transport to and from CCN building.”
So why did this story end up in our pages?

“With the Express keeping a shuteye on this blatant rigging, and the rival Guardian not wanting to make it appear as if they are calling the grapes sour because The Wire’s Donna Pierre did not win, our only alternative is the Mirror,” our source noted.

“We hope you expose it so people will see the kind of cruelty that’s taking place behind the supposed glitter and glamour,”
he ended.

I strong believe pressure will be very, very tremendous for the following countries come May...

1. PANAMA- Of course. Pressure is always great for the host country-- especially if the outgoing queen is also theirs. Stefanie de Roux must be burning it all in the gym and practicing her routines right now if she doesn't want to embarrass her country in front of billions.

2. U S A- It failed to make the semi-final cut last year. We can expect a better performance this year.

3. VENEZUELA- The last woman to win Miss Universe in Panama happens to be from Venezuela. The pressure will be intense for this South American world super power to duplicate its feat in Panama.

4. COLOMBIA- Unknown to many, Panama happened to be a former province of Colombia during the 19th century. Colombia can't afford to be shamed, especially that they've missed the cut last year!

it was a good pageant, at least not as controversial as the previous year. dami magandang contestants, other than the winners, worth mentioning are janine barredo, michelle tuazon, veronica villacorta, estrella palmer, and sovietzkaya bacud. si abbygale arenas and cara subijano na talaga yung bets ko nun. naiinis pa nga ako sa kapatid ko kasi duling daw si cara. and i can't understand why charlene gonzales was voted best in swimsuit. cara's evening gown performance was flawless. syempre disappointed din ako kasi 1st runner-up lang si abbygale arenas. ang question yata kay abbygale was how she would compare the modelling scene abroad and dito, kasi after supermodel 92, she stayed in new york. dun daw, cold ang treatment ng ibang models with others.

after that, pictures of alma concepcion e nagkalat, kasi nakitaan daw siya dahil ang taas ng slit ng gown niya. di pa siya artista nun.

cathybee...i agree. Russian girls or should i say Rossiyskiye dyevushka are absolutely stunning. One thing i like about them is that they are very patient. eventhough they don't smile very often (it's their culture, they don't even laugh when you tell a joke or something), they still look gorgeous (aside from the fact that they love to wear skirts). In my experience, russians look their best when they are 30-35 years of age. :luvluv:

Turks and Caicos isn't necessarily in everyone's list everytime it's Miss Universe. Can't blame them, they've not been sending girls with "K." Some even would think that in those islands there aren't really beautiful girls. Not everyone knew this before but these islands made it to the Top 10 way back. The only controversy of Bb. Pilipinas '94 was Janine Barredo creating a stir days after the coronation. She claimed she was asked to join the pageant coz she was "promised" a crown. And so she obliged... Kaya ayun... I watched her interviews at Showbiz Linggo a week or two after the coronation.

I didn't really have a bet since I wasn't really "concerned" about the outcome back then. But Cara Subijano surely was a stunner in every way. I couldn't believe Alma managed to bring home a crown... beating Sheila Dizon and Abbygale Arenas. Howell... :shrug:

speaking of russians in skirts, i have encounter one who has a slit as high as her waist and as short as her mid thigh...and she carried it well, topping it off with high slinky heels! Shandong is a region/province. Its capital is Jinan and other well known cities are: Qingdao (origin of Qingdao Beer---it's a very famous beer in China, I don't know if you have heard of it pertaining you are a beer drinker ;) ) Tai Shan, Qufu, Zouxian, etc etc....its just above Jiangsu Region where Nanjing belong (Youll be familiar with nanjing if you remember the nanjing massacre in world history) and just across South Korea where the Yellow Sea divides them. (Whew, salamat sa mapa for those info hehehe)Geographically, it is North East of China but technically, it's not considered part of the so-called Northeast 3! Besides the beautiful mountains in that region, it also possesses wonderful beaches...I think it's like the beach capital of China where their coconuts really rival our very own. Also , they produce a wide range of coconut product that's why Im afraid our very own coconut might lose to the competition that this region is bringing....they have coconut milk tea, coconut candies, etc etc...basta maraming kakaibang product sila made of coconut meat, milk, etc....My bet is MU will be held in Qingdao! Yeah, because of the beaches that it possesses :)

Star Phoenix has been unclear if it will show the newest edition for Ms China or the one held last year. :confusing: But based on the ad clips, it's the old one. I think they are aggressively showing as many beauty pageants as they can get. I haven't catched Ms Tourism International (ba un?!? parang wala eh) but they did show Ms. Chinese International - Malaysia edition...this is the pageant to which all Chinese blooded gals from different countries compete in the title Ms. Chinese International. I remember talking about this before but anyways, this is sponsored by Hong Kong's biggest Tv network -HKTVB also francise holder of Ms Hong Kong for MW and MI (and before MU). ;)

Femina Miss India is one of the most unpreditable pageants. I have no bets for Femina. Unlike in other national pageants, here in Femina we can't wholly base our bets in pics alone, we need to hear these girls speak. And knowing Indian girls, it would be very hard for the judges since Femina has always been a tough race, especially when the interview portion comes.

Just look at Mirriam's swimsuit photo during Bb, kita mo pa lang diyan she has the "IT" factor na. That's very rare in Bb. Pilipinas candidate in recent years. Nandyan na yung VAVAVOOM, at wala pang training yan sa Venezuela. I would know if we have another chance in the Top 10 if we see a girl that could project like that.

Naku...you're confusing things na :) The Chinese president speaks Mandarin too...now the thing with him is he might have a Beijing accent which explains the weird accent that you hear when he speaks Mandarin. Usually kase, may mga twang *** mga tao sa iba't ibang parte ng China kase meron din silang sariling dialect so alam mo na...imagine mo na lang nagsasalita ng Tagalog ang puro na Batangueno (example lang naman!)di ba parang may accent din. Ganun din sa China, may mga accent sila na iba iba kaya kahit they're talking with the official language, it sound weird. You ought to here Shanghainese speak their tongue...nahilo ako pag Shanghai dialect gamit nila...parang Japanese na Korean na Cantonese! hehehehe...

If you are going to China, it is better that you know Mandarin -- not Fukien, Pekingese, Shanghainese, etc....kase they will understand you when you use Mandarin --- wherever you are! :D

Miss Bangladesh 2003 will not be competing in Miss Universe... Not yet. However, the organizers are planning to join in the near future. It has also plans of joining Miss World.

Miss Bangladesh 2003 kicks off on January 20, Monday at the Astoria World Manor Grand Ball Room in New York City, New York.

The pageant will be arranged by Miss Bangladesh USA & Entertainment Inc., a New York based organization.

This was disclosed by G.M. Khan Lipton, Chief Executive Director of Miss Bangladesh USA & Entertainment Inc. while addressing a press conference at a hotel in the city yesterday.

Faruq Laskar, Executive Vice-President of the organization and a number of media performers were present.

Regarding the Miss Bangladesh Beauty Contest which is titled "The Vibrations of a Bangladeshi Beauty", Lipton said," Our goals are to provide young Bangladeshi women with an opportunity to display and enhance their talent, heighten their self-esteem and enhance the image of Bangladeshi community."

"We are proud to be able to present the culture and attractions of one of the most spectacular regions of the world to an international audience of thousands of people," he added.

The winners who will achieve first, second and third positions will receive US$ 3000, 1500, 500 respectively.

The problem with those message boards is that kung sino sino nalang kasi ang nakakapag post dun. Mostly the over zealous pageant fans na walang magawa sa buhay nila. Not to mention gets prematurely excited over rumors alone. They're the primary reason why the Philippines is branded as the hype capital during Miss U and Miss World.

miss venezuela mariaangel ruiz is getting better and better as the pageant draws near. i simply love her. although she may not be a statuesque beauty like the past miss venezuelas but there is radiance within her. from the way i see her pictures she seem to have a bubbly personality(correct me if im wrong). i never felt like this since alicia machado. mariangel has this very natural beauty although not that striking. :)

if ever she will be miss universe 2003, i think shell do good... :)

TIDBITS :)

-Belize ain't joining Miss Universe 2003. The reigning queen, Karen Russell, has not even crowned her successor yet. The Miss Belize 2003 pageant is set for September, coinciding with the country's independence day celebrations. It is skipping Miss Universe for the 2nd time in a row.

-Turks & Caicos lost its Miss Universe license last year. The Miss Turks & Caicos 2002 pageant set for July 26th has been cancelled. The 2003 pageant is set for July, coinciding with the Provo Day Festival. It can't be determined if the Caribbean island nation will see action in Miss Universe 2004.

-Lebanon is sending a delegate to Panama. Castings for the Miss Lebanon 2003 pageant have started late last year. The winner will be known next month.

-Honduras lost its Miss Universe license last year amidst the sexual harrassment scandal involving the reigning queen Erika Ramirez and the local pageant organizer Eduardo Zablah. However, it seems the Central American nation has regained the license. Señorita Honduras Universo 2003 will be crowned soon! Stay tuned!

-Chile's national pageant, Miss Viña Chile 2003, has been cancelled. Top Chilean channel Canal 13 will not be televising the Miss Universe 2003 pageant come June. However, the South American nation has not lost its Miss Universe license. It might do an Egypt! It can nominate a girl to be sent to Panama. Egypt did the same in the year 2000.

-Castings for Miss Venezuela 2003 officially begin on Wednesday, January 15th. Hundreds of aspirants are expected to be screened as they vie for the coveted crown in September. The winner will go to China for Miss Universe 2004.

Miss Canada's costume is done with taste naman since it was a depiction of Canada in a lot of ways. Her costume is a something to do with the four seasons, specifically autumn. Like Miss Canada 2000 Kim Yee's "winter" costume.

I just had a chit chat with my friend Julio Rodriguez (Belleza Venezolana webmaster) a while ago. I never knew the topic would be diverted to his country's present chaotic situation. Julio shared that today marks the 44th consecutive day of continuous strife and crisis as a result of President Hugo Chavez's oppressive "communist" rule.

What scared me were the succeeding revelations Julio made. He revealed that "there is no electricity, no gas" in most parts of the country. He even lamented that he had been a "prisoner" for the past days since he could not go out. "People were killed on the streets and riots were everywhere".

Things got even more scarier. Julio further revealed that Chavez was beginning to order television stations closed. If Venevision (owner of the Miss Venezuela Organization) is ordered closed, Venezuela is finished. Mariangel Ruiz WILL NOT go to Panama for Miss Universe 2003! Her makeover photo shoot with top Venezuelan photographer Daniel Alonso has been postponed until further notice.

That bad.

Regarding Chavez, even Erap never gave us a headache that big. Even if our country stink most of the time, never naman dumating sa situation like Venezuela is facing right now. All our demonstrations naman are peaceful enough, san ka naman nakakita ng major revolt na ginawang street party? At times like this, consider ourselves lucky.

Venezuela not joining Miss Universe is like saying fishes forgot how to swim.

oki, here are my "insights"

miss natasha borger(sp)... though she's pretty, i am not really that at awe whenever i see her pics... her beauty is more of an actress to me, and yes, more latina than a german ... and those boobs!nice ones .... ;)i still like cynthia lander, very bubbly on stage .... cant see any signs of pressure on her ....

oxana is still the best for me (re proclaimed winners) ... even if she was dethroned, there's no denying that she won it, hands down... although the reason behind it is still unclear (i dunno bout rumors though)

also, this early, i am having high hopes for cindy and of course gretchen for the bb pilipinas 2003! for gretchen, well, a schoolmate, and so many credentials tucked in her belt (pageant related or not!) ... also, she may not be another bing alto (who was a triathlete and was so hyped on other message boards, but turned out to be.... basta!)... i am optimistic about her for many reasons: she's from ust (many bb pilipinas titleholders from this school ;) ), bemedalled athlete (SEAGames), an AB Student (hehe, thomasians would agree with me, na basta someone coming from this faculty, would surely place in any pageant coz of their "reputation" ... to name a few, joanne quintas, gladys dueñas, montse preysler, even count eula valdes hahaha)...basta, high hopes for her talaga

also, for me, as far as Indian reps are concern, the best pa rin si Sushmita and Aishwayra ....

It is built on a tradition in which the MISS UNIVERSE Titleholder is not merely a beauty queen; she travels extensively as a spokesperson, a goodwill ambassador and a role model to millions. Unfortunately, Oxana Fedorova was unable to fulfill her duties as MISS UNIVERSE 2002 and therefore, first runner-up, Justine Pasek of Panama will assume the title, effective tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the deadline for the submission of applications for Bb. Pilipinas 2003. True to their word, BPCI won't be extending the deadline. This was according to my inside source who informed me about this matter last week.

Expect a truckload of beauties to beat the deadline tomorrow. I heard ang dami daw magagandang nag-apply ah! Howell... We'll see come the Final Screening to be announced very, very soon! :up:

ming tsai: well, that is the rumor circuiting among the managers last Saturday nung screening...Kasi they already were open for ladies na may dual citizenship. Eh the problem is how can they get more candidates to join Binibini if they would get a network na limited lang ang access sa mga Filipina na may dalawang citizenship across the globe so they decided to get ABS-CBN back lalo na at mayroon silang The Filipino Channel (TFC) in the US and some parts of the world. Yun yung istorya sa akin. Mala-Miss Congeniality nga e yung story.

In my opinion, well...WELCOME BACK TO ABS-CBN Binibining Pilipinas...And I must admit, yung tree lighting ceremony na ginawa last December na ihinandle ng ABS-CBN...di ba ginagawa yun usually ng GMA...so ayun...I don't want to dwell on that further.

I just finished watching Star Phoenix's special on Chinese pageants and beauty queens!

Grabe! :whatthe: Ang super taas ng standards nila on selecting women to enter their local pageants! Talagang metikuloso yung taga-screen ng delegates-- kelangan pa immeasure yung weight, chin, face, etc etc... They are following a certain beauty standard! It seems China will be the Venezuela of Asia! It will certainly overtake India soon!

Saka pinakita rin yung clips ng Miss World 2001, 2002 and Miss Universe 2002: 3 pageants where China's performance was superb!

Zhuo Ling was also interviewed! Grabe super ganda na niya! Ang layo ng itsura niya sa itsura niya during Miss Universe 2002! Taob na taob kahit si Zhang Ziyi!!!! :loveeyes:

She has the aura of Gloria Diaz, the beauty of Aurora Pijuan, and I must say the confidence of Cara Subijano. She may have an Isabel Roces-angle, but nonetheless a deadringer for the most beautiful hair award. Sana hindi ma-Thank You Girl ang babaeng ito.

Here's my assessment lang ha sa mga nagpapascreen... karamihan ng mga sumasali are the "Star Circle" material meaning pang-artista ang ganda. Sayang naman kasi parang walang standard ang Binibini for beauty queens. Minsan they find the look-a-like of Miriam Quiambao nowadays kaya parang nagiging Puerto rico ang dating. We can't blame them since we're lacking girls to join diba?
