Brazilian Actress Tais Araújo already in Luanda to present Miss Angola-2003

Luanda, 12/10 - Brazilian actress Tais Araujo arrived in Luanda on Monday evening, to take part in the activities allusive to the Miss Angola-2003 contest.

In the same flight also arrived the Brazillian musical group "Desejos", invited by the Miss Angola Commitee to brighten the December 14 gala, starting at 8 O`clock p.m, at Luanda International Fair (FILDA).

Tais Araújo and the Angolan Television Presenter and Actor, Ladislau Silva, will conduct the contest.

Invited for the event are also the Miss Universe/98, Wendy Fitzwilliam, from Trinidad and Tobago, the musician Artur de Brito, (Cape Verde) and the Angolan football player Mawete Junior, whose arrivals are due to Friday.

This activity programme started on Saturday with a discussion on Hiv/aids.

A gala of charity will be organized by the holder of the title, Giovana Pinto Leite, on Wednesday, at Tropical cinema.

The realization of the candidates general rehearsal will be on Friday, at Luanda International Fair (Filda).

Branson, Missouri, host city for Miss USA 1998-2000, San Antonio Texas and Overland Park, Kansas are the three cities bidding for the 2003 Miss USA Pageant in late March or early April
After the 2000 pageant, Scott Hall of Syncor Special Events Management — owners of the Grand Palace where the event was held — said the company lost about $500,000 each year. Hall could not be reached for comment Thursday.

This year, the site fee has been lowered to about $300,000, said city spokesman Jerry Adams. Also, the pageant will be broadcast by NBC instead of CBS. NBC plans to heavily promote the event, including on affiliates CNBC and MSNBC, he added.

The pageant may be held in March and broadcast on a Sunday night rather than Friday night, which could mean greater viewership. It also will be broadcast internationally.

Here are some updates that I would like to share...

1. http://www.photius.com/flags/thumbnails/pm-t.gif It still is undecided whether the Live Telecast will be held at the Panama Canal Village or at the Vista Centro de Convenciones Atlapa (Miss Universe '86 venue).

The Panama Canal Village is currently under construction. Phase 2 of the entire project has been completed and opened to the public. The last two phases (4 phases all in all) are expected to be completed come May 2003 in time for the big event.

2. Still there is no official word on the exact Live Telecast date for the pageant. The Miss Universe Organization traditionally breaks its silence shortly before the year ends. Let's wait for that announcement.

3. http://www.photius.com/flags/thumbnails/le-t.gif The castings for the Miss Lebanon 2002-2003 pageant is currently underway. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their photos and applications to
LITACO (http://www.litaco.lbgo.com/) as soon as possilble.

LITACO is the sole representative & the licensee holder in Lebanon of all national and international beauty pageants. Stay tuned for details regarding the pageant's official coronation date.

4. http://www.photius.com/flags/thumbnails/ao-t.gif Miss Angola 2003 will be crowned tonight after a 2-hour ceremony in Luanda. The event will take place at the Luanda International Fair. Guests of honor include Brazilian actress Tais Araujo and Miss Universe '98 Wendy Fitzwilliam. The winner will compete in Miss Universe 2003. The 1st runner-up will go to Miss World 2003.

5. So far, there are already 33 delegates for Panama...

*Manuela Osk Hagardottir was crowned Ungfru Miss Island 2002 last May. She was originally set to represent Iceland in Miss International 2002 last September in Japan. For some unknown reasons, she did not compete in the said pageant. She represented her country in Miss Skandinavia 2003 last November 2 in Helsinki, Finland. Manuela's participation in Panama next year marks Iceland's comeback in Miss Universe after a 5-year absence.

**Celine Roschek was crowned Miss Austria 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, she joined the boycott condemning Amina Lawal's case. She has strongly expressed her desire to see action in Panama come May. Her return marks Austria's comeback in Miss Universe after a 3-year absence.

***Katerina Prusova was crowned Miss Cesky Republicky 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, her 1st runner-up (Katerina Smrzova) was sent instead. This automatically means that Prusova is now headed to Panama in May.

****Mounia Achlaf was crowned Miss Algerie 2003 last December 2. The Nedjma Organization was responsible for her coronation. She's the first ever Algerian woman to be sent to Miss Universe.

(NMBPA) — The Northern Marianas Beauty Pageant Association has officially commenced its search for Miss Northern Marianas 2003.

In anticipation of the Miss Universe contest, the local pageant is tentatively scheduled for March 9, 2003, Sunday.

The winning queen, Miss CNMI-Universe 2003, will represent the Northern Marianas at the internationally acclaimed Miss Universe Pageant to be held sometime in May in Panama.

Miss CNMI International 2003 will represent the islands at the annual Miss International Pageant to be held later on next year in Japan.

MISS 'U' Trumped

NBC has entered an exclusive agreement with Donald Trump to become equal partners in the Miss Universe franchise. The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the "Miss Universe," "Miss USA" and "Miss Teen USA" pageants, is a Donald J. Trump and NBC partnership. As part of the agreement, NBC and Telemundo (including Puerto Rico) will become the U.S. broadcasters of the three contests for five years beginning in 2003.

Both NBC and Telemundo will work to develop spinoff programming from the pageants. In addition, Telemundo will produce a Spanish language pre-pageant program for the Miss Universe pageant. The new deal also extends Miss Universe's reach into commerce with the opportunity to sell pageant-related merchandise on ShopNBC.

This will be the highlight of the Korean Centennial celebration. The ceremony and banquet committee is headed by attorney Arthur Park. The committee has invited South Korean President Kim Dae-jung to participate. An answer is anticipated in late 2002. There will be keynote address by Washington State Sen. Paull Shin, an orphan from Seoul in his teens and now vice president of the Washington State Senate. Three Korean naval ships have been scheduled to arrive in Honolulu about that time to take part in the festivities.

I don't think Belize will be participating in Miss Universe 2003.

Pageants Belize, the authorized pageant authority and the Belizan Miss Universe franchise holder, traditionally holds the Annual Miss Belize pageant in September. It coincides with the country's independece day celebration.

Miss Belize 2002 Karen Russell hasn't crowned her successor yet for reasons unknown.

I hope Belize returns to Miss Universe in 2004. :)

Dec. 14th: Island Beauty Captures Hearts

19 year-old Corinne Coman from Guadeloupe was crowned Miss France 2003 tonight. Her runners-up were Miss Ile de France, 20 year-old Ornella Verrecchia; Miss Franche Comte, 18 year-old Elodie Couffin; Miss Rhone Alpes, 19 year-old Fanny Anselme; Miss Aquitaine, 18 year-old Elodie Pleumeckers.
The Miss France Pageant is one of the most famous nationals in the world. Telecast live from Lyon across France and other European nations, Endemol ratings indicated that about 50% of the viewing public tuned in for last year's pageant. Miss France is always a night of glamour, sophistication and elegance; It is not really a 'modern' pageant as we tend to visualize them, but it plays upon tradition and classic beauty to catch the attention of the French press and public, who haven't tired of this age-old tradition.

The new Miss France is studying electrical engineering at the moment. The Miss Universe Pageant followed up on the 1999 removal of Miss France's franchise by the Miss World Pageant with its own removal. Ex-Miss France Sylvie Tellier will go to Miss Europe 2002 in Beirut, Lebanon at the end of December, as will Corrine the following year. The reason for the removal of Miss Universe's franchise were due to the plans by organizers to stage Miss Intercontinentale, their own pageant. In any case, it is Miss Universe's loss. France was a shining star in their pageant line-up.

As Gary City Mayor Scott King continues to wrestle with Donald Trump and Miss Universe Organization top dogs about whether the national pageant will grace Gary for its third contracted year, the pageant powers-that-be are working feverishly to boost the 2003 telecast ratings to impress NBC, their new network.

"Daily Variety" columnist Army Archerd reports the pageant producers have tried everything to win back perennial pageant host Bob Barker to emcee the pageant.

Animal rights activist Barker quit in a huff in the late '80s after the pageant refused to stop awarding fur coats as part of its prize package. But Barker, who has slowed down in recent years, isn't interested and reportedly ruffled the fur of more than a few by publicly expressing his opinion of today's beauty pageants in his own colorful terms.

Plan B, attempting to interest actress and new James Bond flick flame Halle Berry into performing the duties, also apparently is going nowhere. Berry, former Miss Ohio and Miss USA first runner-up in 1986, has more than enough money offers and projects to keep her in mink.

San Antonio to host 2003 Miss USA pageant, paper reports

GARY, Ind. - Gary, which has hosted the Miss USA pageant for two years, will not host next year's event. Instead, the pageant apparently will go to San Antonio.

Officials in Gary made the announcement Monday. The city's two-year contract with pageant owners included a third-year option.

The Times of Munster reported Tuesday that San Antonio had been selected to host the 2003 pageant scheduled for March. The San Antonio City Council is to vote Thursday on a request to use tax funds to host the event.

Pageant officials did not immediately comment and there was no mention of the 2003 site on the organization's Web site overnight.

A spokeswoman for Miss USA said organizers had not ruled out returning to Gary someday.

"We've decided not to end our relationship with Gary, but to postpone it, and possibly do a future show there," Mary Hilliard-McMillan said.

With the help of a Miss Texas pageant official, San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza got a meeting with real-estate magnate Donald Trump, the owner of the Miss Universe Organization, the pageant's parent company. The Garza-Trump meeting, which was two months ago, helped start negotiations to lure the beauty contest to the Alamo city, the San Antonio Express-News reported in Tuesday's editions.

Dale Lockett, acting director of the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau, said San Antonio would get about $2 million worth of media exposure from the pageant, making the $500,000 it would cost the city to host the event worth it. The City Council and the mayor must approve the expenditure.

Besides the $500,000, the city would have to shell out 2,600 free and discounted hotel room nights over three weeks to land the event, which is at least 50 years old.

This year, Miss USA is scheduled to be broadcast nationwide March 24 on NBC. Previously, the event was on CBS.

South Padre Island held the pageant from 1994 to 1996. South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau director Dan Quandt said it gave the island valuable exposure, even though it wasn't an economic generator.

"You have to look at the event by itself and not try to understand the profit and loss from it," Quandt said. "There's long-time exposure and a very good investment."

Money motivated the decision to opt out of a third year at Gary, Mayor Scott King said. The pageant cost the city $3.5 million over two years, only $1 million of which it has recovered.

King said the city had been unable to negotiate a lower price for hosting the pageant.

The pageant's cost, along with King's contention that it would enhance the city's image, have become an political issue on the eve of a crowded 2003 mayoral race.

"I'm one of those that was never sold on the idea the Miss USA pageant was an image enhancer. I'm reminded of the old saying, 'If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig,' " said state Sen. Earline Rogers, D-Gary.

"It's an analogy I use to say there are many things we need to do in this city prior to opening it up to the rest of the United States."

Eighty-four people were murdered in Gary last year, giving the city the most homicides per capita in the country for a seventh straight year.

*Manuela Osk Hagardottir was crowned Ungfru Miss Island 2002 last May. She was originally set to represent Iceland in Miss International 2002 last September in Japan. For some unknown reasons, she did not compete in the said pageant. She represented her country in Miss Skandinavia 2003 last November 2 in Helsinki, Finland. Manuela's participation in Panama next year marks Iceland's comeback in Miss Universe after a 5-year absence.

**Celine Roschek was crowned Miss Austria 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, she joined the boycott condemning Amina Lawal's case. She has strongly expressed her desire to see action in Panama come May. Her return marks Austria's comeback in Miss Universe after a 3-year absence.

***Katerina Prusova was crowned Miss Cesky Republicky 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, her 1st runner-up (Katerina Smrzova) was sent instead. This automatically means that Prusova is now headed to Panama in May.

****Mounia Achlaf was crowned Miss Algerie 2003 last December 2. The Nedjma Organization was responsible for her coronation. She's the first ever Algerian woman to be sent to Miss Universe.

Belarus is joining Miss Universe for the very first time! :up:

22-year old Miss Belarus 2002 Olga Nevdakh of Minsk won three golds at the world cup of performing arts in Los Angeles.

Olga Nevdakh won in the following nominations: “evening dress”, “photomodel” and “bathing suit”. Besides, the Belarusian beauty was presented with the Crystal Star prize usually awarded to the absolute world champions.

After her success Olga was suggested to take part in the beauty pageant Miss Universe. Miss Belarus-2002 is also planning to partake in the Miss of the Commonwealth contest.

Olga Nevdakh is a student at the arts department of the Advanced Knowledge Institute.

Word has it that the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will also be competing in Miss Universe for the very first time next year in Panama.

Milena Projkojska was crowned Miss Macedonia International 2002.

For unknown reasons, she did not compete in Tokyo during Miss International 2002. Rumors have it that she will compete in Panama.

This, however, is not yet confirmed.

When we had a brief stop over in Kuala Lumpur on our way to Amsterdam, I saw Karen Ang on tv in a shampoo commercial. And yeah she is pretty.

Jensie, can you translate what Eva Ekvall wrote in the letter addressed to the president? I know she's not the only Miss Venezuala that has been vocal regarding President Julio Chavez's regime. The recent Miss Venezuela Mariangel Ruiz, Pin Leon, Veruska Ramirez, Irene Saez and a lot of other Miss Venzuela's want their President out. In Venezuela pala, their beauty queens have a voice, a very powerful voice. They can be very influential pala in fields such as politics as well. Our beauty queens never did that during Edsa 2.

Lara_D: Eva Ekvall's letter is an appeal to Hugo Chavez. Eva first introduces herself and what her achievemente were. She then related these to the youth, saying that it was vital that the youth must possess a good example in life. She then revealed that she was sad that Venezuela is presently in a chaotic situation because of the way he runs the government. She then lamented that it is the youth that is suffering most from this present political crisis. In conclusion, Eva challenged the president to do something about the situation in order to restore peace and trust in the entire nation.

Zorah revealed that she was present at the EDSA Shrine during the EDSA DOS event. She was a Bb. Pilipinas "aspirant" back then. Her legal training and education made a big difference... especially during the interview portion of the Bb. Pilipinas 2001 Final Screening... :up:

The only former Bb. Pilipinas titleholder I know who was active during EDSA DOS was Maria Isabel Lopez. She represented our country in Miss Universe 1982. Anti-Erap siya.

hi there... just passed by...just want to know ur opinion. i reaD somewhere that ms. michelle reyes, won an international title ... and she was with andam's batch in bb pilipinas. we all know who represented the philippines in the ms universe that year. there was a post there asking what if she was sent to ms universe, instead of zora, would the result be in favor of us? also, they try to say that michelle should be sent to next year's pageant. i myself find it absurd(kahitschool mate ko sha :D).not that i dont have faith in her, kaso,i believe we are not short of sending beautiful filipinas to these competition, and she had her time already ... but her shots arereally awesome, but there are still aspiring girls aswell ....

I think we won't make it the top 10 even if she was the one sent to Bayamon. She's a beauty alright but she definitely behind when it comes to the Q&A. I remember her interview during Bb. Pilipinas 2001 and all I can do is cringe in disgust. Parang gusto ko iuntog ulo ko sa pader. And I have a friend who knows her, they were friends in Daet, Camarines Norte. Napamura din siya when she saw her on tv during that interview. Sabi niya pabigyan nalang natin siya kasi she's with kids all the time in the Pedia section of the UST Hospital kaya ganun siya magsalita. And with regards to those people who are hyping her and clammoring that she should be sent to Panama, those people I suppose napadala lang siguro sa emotions nila without really thinking and analysing the situation. Madaming taong ganun dito sa bansa natin eh, no wonder we are branded by other nationals na sobrang hypers when it comes to our beauty queens. Just because we won in some never been heard, generic pageant, it doesn't mean it's easy for us to get that darn Mikimoto crown. Our beauites being sent to Miss Universe just don't have the full package, we lack something.

I agree with Lara_D. Mitch's performance during the Bb. Pilipinas 2001 Final Q&A was quite shocking and of course, disappointing. A lot of people were counting on her to be sent to Bayamon that year. Too bad she choked at the very critical and deciding portion of the pageant.

And yeah, having two international beauty titles tucked under your belt will not (in any way) automatically guarantee you a Top 10 placement in Miss Universe. Miss Universe is a different ball game.

Mitch can't join Bb. Pilipinas 2003. Why? Because she's already 25 (maximum age limit for BPCI) and she also has important commitments with the Miss Tourism World Organization-- especially now that she has won the 2002 crown.

The Miss Russia crown is more beautiful (one of the most beautiful national crowns) than the Miss Europe crown (which looked more like rods welded together). Too bad she could have created waves in Panama, she could have redeemed Oxana.

WOW, The New Miss Europe makes the end of 2002 very beautiful.

1. Miss Universe Oxana Fedorova dethroned.

2. USA missed the Top 10 cut in Miss Universe.

3. Venezuela missed the Top 12 cut in Miss International.

4. Miss España 2001 Lorena Ayala van Heerde skipped Miss Universe 2002 in favor of a modeling career in New York.

5. Madame Genevieve de Fontenay of Societe Miss France lost the Miss Universe franchise and license amidst plans of establishing a new super pageant called Miss Intercontinentalle.

6. Señorita Honduras Universo Erika Ramirez sued Eduardo Zablah, president of her national pageant due to an alleged "sexual harrasment".
