Another disturbing fact is that the Miss Portugal 2002 pageant was originally due last month. But still Iva Lamarao has not crowned her successor.

I think Portugal placed in the Miss World finals once. If I can correctly recall, the year was 1971.

It's about a girl. Not just any girl, but one you’ve seen before. On TV, guest spots on Baywatch, The Bold and the Beautiful, Clairol TV and print campaigns...somewhere. It’s hard not to recognize the dark hair, the porcelain skin and the eyes like obsidian, deep pools of liquid darkness that give new meaning to doe-eyed. You try desperately to recall the glimpse. Where? In what? In a second, it evaporates. All of a sudden you find yourself ordering a Frappuchino at Starbucks on Sunset and La Brea for Joyce Giraud, former Miss Puerto Rico and 2nd Runner Up in the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant.


In an instant, it somehow makes sense. And none of it really even matters anymore. The need to remember the magazine or the commercial or the guest appearance is gone in a flash. As familiar as she seems, the slate is fresh, wiped clean. Even the Google search biographical notes hastily jotted down inside the binder on the table in front of you lose their significance.


I’m having coffee with one of the ten most beautiful women in the world, and she’s acting like my long lost friend, smiling sheepishly because I’ve insisted on picking up the tab.


At the table, she settles in for a casual chat, calmly asking in perfect Caribbean Spanish what language we’ll use to conduct the interview. We settle for an organic fusion of both. In English, it sounds as if she could just as easily be from Anaheim.


“I grew up speaking English,” she explains. Add the fact that she began modeling at 14 and was an international sensation by 18 and it’s easy to understand her facility for language.


About the decision to participate in the 1998 Miss Puerto Rico beauty pageant she is flip.


“It was a dare. One of my best friends dared me to do it,” she recalls. She had, she says, already outgrown the pomp and decorum of beauty pageants. As Puerto Rico’s reigning Miss Venus and Miss Atlantis, the beauty pageant regimen had worn thin.

A friend of mine who got hold of a Latin magazine read there that according to Alicia Machado, she "felt more like a queen when she was simply Miss Venezuela alone. When she became Miss Universe everything turned into pure hell because of the pressure for her to lose weight and keep up with her proper grooming, as expected of a reigning Miss Universe titleholder."

George Hamilton: Miss Universe has recently been the subject of a lot of press attention about her weight. If this happened to you, how would you handle it?

Brooke Lee: I think I would take a good hard look at myself and I'd look from the inside out and I'd know that I was the same girl that was crowned that day and it really didn't matter what I looked like on the outside [audience bursts into raucous cheering] because I won for what I was in here. So if I go up, I go down, I get taller, I get shorter, my nose gets bigger, smaller [audience still cheering], I am still who I was when that crown was on my head and I am a good representative no matter what. I'm just wondering if it also holds water in Miss World that delegates on top/bottom row have higher chances of winning the title?! Kasi diba Oxana was on top of the class pic of Miss Universe and she won! So was Denise in Bayamon! Possible kaya in Miss World?! Miss World contestants getting 'fat and bored'

Miss World contestants complain they are getting fat and bored waiting in their hotel rooms for the event to finally start.

The event is finally due to get underway in London this weekend after a series of setbacks and delays including a riot that left more than 200 dead in Nigeria.

But Miss Croatia, 19-year-old Nina Slamic, says the contestants' biggest problems have been boredom and putting on weight.

She told Croatian daily Jutarnji List: "It's been so boring in London. We've spent most of out time in our hotel rooms, just sitting around and eating or lying on the bed.

"I've become fat - I've put on almost nine pounds."

Nina added that her room mate Danijela Vins, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, had also put on four and a half pounds.

"Organisation is a complete catastrophe. They never tell us properly what is going on and we are not given enough chance to rehearse," she said.

The Miss World contest is taking place at London's Alexandra Palace on Saturday after being relocated from Nigeria following riots between Christians and Muslims in which 220 people died.

Medyo ok naman yung Miss World pageant this year, not that boring as it was before kasi siguro Ms. philippines made it, ngayon bilib na ko sa text power ng mga Pinoy, imagine out of the total text votes, 1/3 was for Kate.

She was really nervous, pati sa Top 10, di na pumapalakpak nung malapit na sya, pati video clip nya memorized, hahaha, pero ok na din, at least she made it.

Ngayon lang ako natuwa sa Miss Worl in a long while, since Ruffa placed 2up actually. ok sakin yung 20-10 format sa semis, mas may chance mamili ng winner, and the Top 20 was a good group, noticeably missing was Spain and Hong Kong. Miss USA was over confident and feeling ang kapal ng mukha, sabihin ba sa judges na I admonish you to pick me, nye, sino sya no???

I liked the winner, very young and bubbly. she deserved the crown.

i believe miss venezuela gave the best answer in the final q & a. she should have placed 1st runner-up instead of colombia. just like in miss universe, i also think cynthia lander aced her interview, pero 4th runner-up lang siya.

the question for her has been asked so many times in many beauty pageants but goizeder's answer was unique, new, and very sincere.

i'm just happy for cynthia and goizeder. when they won kasi maraming nag-underestimate. but they held their ground, and though di sila nanalo, they somehow exceeded the expectations of many.

Surprise winner

Sun City - Cindy Nell, a 21-year-old student and entrepreneur from Pretoria, was crowned the new Miss South Africa at the Sun City Superbowl on Sunday night.

Nell, who owns her own promotions company and is studying tourism management, was something of surprise winner, taking the crown ahead of the spunky Bridget Masinga (21), a model from KwaZulu-Natal who was the eventual second runner-up, and the striking Lee-Ann Liebenberg, a 19-year-old model from Roodepoort.

This year's pageant kicked off with a lacklustre performance from Pop Idols finalists Melanie Lowe, Nicole Billingham, Bianca le Grange and R&B sensation Lira.

The Pop Idols connection did not end there with the Miss South Africa contest largely based on the popular M-Net music reality show. The two shows even had the same presenter, Sam Sabiti.

The Pop Idols format was further hammered home by an over-zealous "rent-a-crowd" which provided a noisy, if not distracting backdrop, in an obvious attempt by organisers to inject life into the show. Disappointingly, many Superbowl seats were left vacant.

The 12 finalists were introduced in streetwear, while the swimsuit section had many ogling. At that point Masinga, Liebenberg and the eventual first runner-up Tammy-Anne Fortuin, a 20-year-old model and student from Cape Town, had established themselves as firm favourites with the crowd.

A number of South Africa's top designers, including Craig Native and Gideon, provided the inspiration for the haute couture. Native, who reportedly became embroiled in a spat with the organisers over his designs, drew the loudest applause when introduced to the crowd.

In a break from previous pageants the organisers elected to inform the contestants one by one whether they had made it through to the top five.

With the 12 whittled down to five, each of the contestants was asked the same question: if they could travel back in time what event in history would they change?

Both princesses replied that they would change nothing because events took place for a reason, while Nell opted to have stopped apartheid.

Nell, who lists the Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria as her favourite place, said at the post-pageant briefing she supported her predecessor, Vanessa Carreira's stance in refusing to attend the Miss World pageant in Nigeria because of the death sentence imposed on a Nigerian woman who had a child out of wedlock.

Nell added that her primary aspiration was to help uplift rural communities. She refused to discuss her private life saying that she had promised exclusivity to a popular tabloid magazine.

Despite the disappointing opening music number, popular Kwaito star Mandoza had the audience baying for more as he sang his latest hit "Tornado."

The Miss Personality and Miss Legs titles went to Zenobia Badroodien and Karolina Skrzypczak and respectively.

TROUBLE FOR MISS UNIVERSE 2002 RUNNERUP, MISS CHINA ZHUO LING

Shanghai model Zhuo Ling was sued by the Beijing company which organised Miss China, with approval from the New York City based Miss Universe Organization for contract violation, a Beijing newspaper said today.

Beijing Golden International Investment and Consulting Company has filed a lawsuit versus Zhou, 19, in Beijing court seeking 10 million yuan ($1.2 million) according to today's edition of the Beijing Morning Post.


The company alleges that Zhuo had agreed that if and after winning the Miss China Universe title, she would seek the company's permission before participating in any promotion or advertisement activities but Zhou has igonred this according to company officials. She has instead organized charity and ad activities on her own.


The company is said to be contacting the Miss Universe Organisation to urge it to revoke Zhou's title as runnerup at the Miss Universe 2002 Pageant held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.


Zhuo refused to comment on said contract violation charges, but said she was forced by the company to sign the contract.


Asked why she had listed in her Miss Universe paperwork that she had graduated from a Shanghai dance school when the school said she never graduated, Zhuo said others told her to write that on the documents.

BEAUTY HAS SOFT SPOT FOR THAI SILK

Newly crowned Miss Universe, Justine Pasek, is determined to promote Thai silk in international markets.

"I love Thai silk," the 23-year-old beauty queen from Panama said during a press conference in Bangkok yesterday.

"I feel like a princess every time I wear Thai silk, and when I return home I will encourage my friends in Panama to wear Thai silk," Pasek said.

The beauty queen is in Thailand to attend "Queen Sirikit the Great's 70th Birthday" gala dinner night, which will be presided over by Her Majesty the Queen on December 12 at the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel.

Pasek, the first runner-up in the contest in May, took the crown when Russian beauty queen Oxana Fedorova unexpectedly stepped down in September.

Fedorova, a graduate student in civil law, called it quits after just four months, saying, "the duties of a world beauty are wonderful. However, my prime goal is my studies and career in Russia."

Pasek said she was not aware that she was about to receive the much-coveted title when Miss Universe pageant organisers called her and invited her to New York.

Even though she was crowned off-stage, Pasek was thrilled by the experience.

"It was wonderful. I was surprised, I was lucky," she said.

Asked about the recent riots during the Miss World Pageant in Nigeria, Pasek pointed out that the two pageants have different organisers.

Still, if she had been a contestant she would not have packed her bags and gone home, she said, explaining that she was confident the organiser would have ensured the safety of the pageant's participants.

As Miss Universe she will campaign for peace and world security and "encourage people around the world to think, believe and do good things," Pasek said.

She will also campaign to increase public awareness about HIV and cancer, she said.

On the recent violence in Bali, she said, "I wish we can pray for each other."

Observations on Miss World 2002:

1. For a pageant that many a critic says “should not have taken place at all,” the 2002 Miss World Pageant was a very “happening” event. Following the dethronement of erstwhile Miss Universe 2002 Oxana Fedorova from Russia, the London-staged visual treat capped what pageant denizens may call a very “controversial” year in pageantry.

2. Originally planned to have taken place in Abuja, Nigeria, motherland of Miss World 2001 Agbani Darego, the contest was coldly welcomed by a few sectors. A number of delegates disputed the fact that a country that punishes women to death will host an event that celebrates femininity and womanhood. Until a few days into the pre-pageant activities, delegates backed out and returned, increased in number, and finally withdrew. (Other reasons were health, homesickness, and visa problems.) The sector with the most rejection, though, was the Muslim population of Nigeria that sparked a major riot causing a sudden change of location from Abuja to London. The reason – an editorial maliciously linking the prophet Mohammed to the Miss World delegates.

3. To add up to the controversy, this year marked the first time Miss World used SMS to determine one-half of each contestant’s over-all preliminary standing. The bold move from Julia Morley’s camp definitely raised a lot of eyebrows – some out of interest and more out of disgust. The new method catapulted a number of countries to new fame, the Philippines included.

4. Production design is so mediocre! The stage was definitely boring and lighting was poorly done. The video wall concept is so passé and so are the water inlets. The colors were at their all-time drab. The opening number music (Boom, boom!) reminded me of those bastardized remixes mercilessly repeated over and over again in FXs and kolorum vans! For a pageant that claims to be the biggest and the most glamorous, it was sure was lackluster.

5. The hosts were neither fun nor boring. Now that’s a problem. Mediocrity was all over the place! The pageant’s saving grace was the voice-over, who despite having a very annoying voice (you have to understand the accent), gave out witty comments during the parade of delegates.

6. The “20-10-3” format was a welcome change and would definitely give more chance to Filipina delegates in the years to come. The only loophole I see in Miss World is the lack of categorical competitions in Swimsuit and Evening Wear. It could have added more excitement and fun to the whole contest. (Well, if you come to think of it, these categories are not really the priority of the contest. It prides itself in being more “cerebral” than others.)

7. This year’s Top 20 was a good batch. It was a mixture of the deserving, the hyped and the dark horses. Nigeria, Curacao, Peru, Russia, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Venezuela and the USA belonged to the deserving batch, in my opinion. Unfortunately for Vicky Jolly’s (HK) fans, the hyped delegate did not make the cut. India was there due to the sash factor. (You can even see in her face how a nervous wreck she was when the Top 20 was called.)

8. Discounting the fact that I am a Filipino, I was very pleased with how Kate Manalo carried herself throughout the pageant. Such poise and elegance was last seen in Miriam Quiambao back in Miss Universe 1999. However, her gown could have been in a better color.

Kate also proved her detractors wrong by placing in the Top 10. At this point of the pageant, not one SMS vote counted. Her placement in the Finals only proved that she had the ability to make it that far.

9. Miss Turkey was beautiful and sincere, but I did not like her gown and think that someone else deserved the Dress Award.

10. Misses Spain, Mexico, Gibraltar, Uganda, Namibia, Antigua, and other deserving or hyped delegates did not make the cut. On the brighter side, the Top 20 was a good mix.

Ayoko nung the way the Top 20 were called... Per group... Are you kidding? It only made the non-semi finalists feel like sh*t. Dapat spontaneous and regardless of the group para mas suspense.

She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2001 but backed off for security reasons. The 9/11 tragedy played a big role.

RAKHEE CHAUDHURY, Gladrags Megamodel 2002, found dead in her Mumbai Flat

This tragic news comes from the Indian press. Rakhee was found hanging from a nylon scarf in D-2, Krishna Kaveri Apartments, Oshiwara, last week. Police have investigated and concluded that this was a suicide.
Her sister Ruchi and husband came to check on Rakhee after not hearing from her for days, and found no response. A locksmith opened the door, only for her to find the corpse. The body was probably there since Wednesday or Thursday due to its condition, say the police. Maureen Wadhia, director of Gladrags, has discussed the depression in Rakhee's life and the added stress of her parents' divorce, which may have caused her to take this step. Rakhee had also been putting on weight, recently. Her parents came from Bangalore on Sunday for her laste rites and cremation.
Rakhee won the Gladrags Megamodel contest in early 2002, and finished as a semifinalist at Miss Intercontinental 2002 in Germany. She had just extended her contract with Gladrags and was headed to the Miss Tourism International Pageant in Malaysia at the end of December.
This a tragic loss for the Indian modelling and fashion industries. Keep Rakhee and her family in your prayers - she was only 23 years old.
