**Celine Roschek was crowned Miss Austria 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002 in Nigeria. However, she joined the boycott condemning Amina Lawal's case. WILL MW EVER BRING THE ON STAGE SWIMSUIT COMPETITION BACK? VICTORIA'S SECRET SETS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE

Last night America had the chance to catch the 2002 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on CBS. Supermodels Gisele, Tyra, Heidi, Naomi, and twenty-four other knock-outs, took the stage by storm in sexy lingerie creations. They made American's hearts beat faster in a display of fashion, sensuality, amazing stage presence, beauty and great taste.

In 1997 Miss World decided to abolish the swimsuit competition on stage. The reason behind such decision was to calm feminists' nerves. Useless. Year after year, a bunch of seemingly ugly and frustrated women, keep throwing eggs and flour on journalists and photographers covering the pageant and protesting against the "meat market".

So what's the point? With or without the swimsuit competition, this pathological behavior born in the 70s (and totally out of place today) will continue. With or without the swimsuit competition, British press will continue to mock the Miss World pageant. There will always be something for them to pick on.

The point is: instead of using all types of controversies to catch media attention and attract higher television audiences, how about modernizing the pageant before it becomes something close to Miss America, a scholarship program that is so politically correct that even ugly women walk away with the crown?

Miss World's survival lies upon knowing how to dare in the right direction. Facing the feminists, who keep fighting a swimsuit competition which hasn't existed for the past 5 years, is certainly less of a problem than exposing the Miss World organization to serious political and religious controversies.

Hire some of the greatest fashion designers in the world and throw the pageant of a lifetime, with candidates wearing daring and creative swimsuits, gowns, and why not… even lingerie! Then add the right music, lighting, choreography and hosts. Call it the "swimsuit fashion show", and then you will have the greatest beauty and fashion show on Earth.

Believe us, Julia Morley: it will be easier to find new Giseles, Cindys and Tyras in a bunch of gorgeous 18 to 23 year-olds than Einsteins, Mandelas and Mother Teresas.

Miss World is a beauty competition, one of the two greatest on the planet. There's nothing to be ashamed when it comes to that.

And by the way, about Miss World's motto, "beauty with a purpose", and its extensive charitable work in Third World nations, it is fantastic and gives further meaning to the pageant. What do feminists say (or do) about that?

Crowd Riots near Miss World Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria

ABUJA (Reuters) - Muslim worshippers rioted after prayers on Friday at a mosque in Nigeria's capital, where beauty queens are staying before a Miss World contest that has sparked bloody riots in Nigeria, witnesses said. At least two vehicles were set ablaze as people ran through the streets after prayers at the national mosque in Abuja, they said. "People are fleeing in all directions," one witness said.

The mosque is about half a mile from a hotel where beauty queens are staying in readiness for the December 7 Miss World beauty pageant in Abuja. "There was pandemonium...People were running helter skelter," said a Reuters journalist at the scene.
He said witnesses had told him people had stampeded in other part of the city as worshippers from the main mosque returned home.

He added that the area around the mosque itself was later calm. It was not immediately clear if the rampage had been linked to the Miss World pageant. Muslim fury over Nigeria's staging of the event has triggered riots in the nearby city of Kaduna in which over 105 people have been killed since Wednesday, according to Red Cross officials.

An observers comment:
"In a democracy, you can say something negative about Jesus, but you don't get killed for your opinion. In a fundamentalist Moslem country, you say something against Islam or Mohammed, and then you get killed! It's obvious that Islam is not at all a religion of peace like the media wants us to believe."

BREAKING NEWS!

Miss World set for London
23.45PM GMT, 22 Nov 2002

The controversial Miss World contest is on its way from Nigeria to London, according to its organisers.

The decision was taken after Muslim protest riots in the West African nation which killed more than 100 people.

The violence was sparked by a newspaper article suggesting the Prophet Mohammad would probably have married one of the Miss World beauty queens.

"Miss World Organisation and Silver Bird Productions Limited, organisers of the 2002 Miss World pageant, have decided to move the grand finale to London, England," the organisers said.

"This decision was taken after careful consideration of all the issues involved and in the overall interests of Nigeria and the contestants participating in this year's edition," they added.

Pageant spokeswoman Stella Din said the London pageant would take place on December 7, the same date as had been originally scheduled for the event in Nigeria.

There had already been a worldwide outcry over the contest being held in Nigeria because a woman in the north of the country is living under a death sentenced imposed under strict Muslim Sharia law.

She had been condemned after having a child out of wedlock and was due to be stoned to death.

Several contestants had said they were considering pulling out of the competition rather than attend in Nigeria.

Hey guys! The violence in Kaduna really got out of hand and I'm sure it was a hard decision for the organizers to pull the pageant out of Abuja. What happend in Nigeria is quite similar to what happend in Bangalore but the extent of unrest is far alarming. I was at first hoping that they'll stay in Abuja hoping things will calm down eventually. But now, I think its right that the pageant is now on safer grounds since the situation in Nigeria will certainly be unpredictable.

On a happier not, I like the Miss World headshot. They look so natural. Though Nigeria looked certainly better in her MU shot.

Peace!

hi peeps!!

i'm not that satisfied sa headshots ng miss world candidates..

some looked...nevermind...

some of the ladies didn't appear to be prepared for the shot..

but i guess the head shots really showed which ladies know how to project well.

i feel sorry for the organizers of miss world having been faced with some problems like the venue.. but lets just hope that come dec 7 they could put up a good pageant. :)

KADUNA, Nigeria (CNN) -- Miss World contestants and officials are making final preparations to fly to Britain after the rioting in Nigeria that left 100 people dead and 500 injured.

Contest spokeswoman Stella Din said provisional plans were in place to move the 80 contestants from the Nicon Hilton hotel in the capital Abuja on Saturday afternoon.

Din said they hoped to land at London's Heathrow airport at about 9.30 p.m. British time, but the schedule had yet to be confirmed.

The decision was taken on Friday to move the contest to London where it will be held on December 7, the same date it had been planned in Nigeria.

This followed the fighting which began in the northern city of Kaduna before spreading to Abuja, the intended venue for this year's pageant.

Din said: "I have heard it's been reported in England that the rioters were marching to the contestants' hotel but this is absolutely not true.

"They never got closer than two miles away. The girls have always been completely safe."

The bloodshed was sparked by an "offending" article published in a national newspaper last week, which backed the contest and claimed that had the prophet Muhammad been alive he would have wanted to marry one of the beauty queens.

Troubled flared when Muslims gathered after prayers outside the national mosque in the capital before marching through the city chanting "Allahu Akhbar (God is Great)," burning cars, churches and houses. They also torched the newspaper's offices.

Police firing tear gas restored calm in Abuja within hours. But the melee in Kaduna, a religiously mixed city of several million people, continued in defiance of a round-the-clock police curfew.

According to Red Cross officials, at least 100 people were killed and more than 500 were injured in the riots. Government authorities would only say "scores" are dead.

Throughout the violence, the contestants remained under Nigerian police and army guard in the Nicon Hilton in Abuja, the nation's most luxurious hotel.

Din said the girls were feeling "really miserable."

"They were never in any danger but there are times you have to step back and take steps. We are very sorry it has come to this," Din said.

At least five contestants earlier failed to show up, four of whom said they were boycotting because of sentences passed by Nigerian Islamic courts sentencing Muslim women to death by stoning for having sex outside marriage.

On Saturday the newspaper that published the article that sparked the violence said Nigeria's secret police had arrested its editor.

ThisDay, which has apologised for the article, said the editor of its Saturday edition, Simon Kolawole, was arrested on Friday and had not been seen since.

"Yesterday (Friday), the editor of ThisDay, The Saturday Newspaper, Mr Simon Kolawole, was arrested by men of the State Security Service in Abuja," the paper said.

The article had been seen as insulting to Muslims, particularly as it was pubblished during the holy month of Ramadan.

Despite front-page apologies early in the week, Muslims rioted. Christians then retaliated against Muslims. The newspaper's offices in Kaduna were burned down and there were reports of churches and mosques being torched.

The newspaper's "apology to all Muslims" was posted on its Web site on Friday.

"With all sense of responsibility, sensitivity and respect for all Muslims, the staff, management, editors and board of ThisDay Newspapers apologise for the great editorial error in last Saturday's edition on Miss World Beauty Pageant.

"We are sorry that the portrayal of the Holy Prophet Mohammed in a commentary written by one of our staff was not only unjustified, but utterly provocative," the apology said.

The Miss World contest, now in its 53rd year, is watched on television by more than two billion viewers worldwide, according to the pageant's Web site. The current Miss World is Agbani Darego, of Nigeria.

A nice comment coming from a Muslim concerning the violence in Nigeria:

"Almost all Nigerians don't know what the heck is Miss World in the first place and have never heard of it. So the Muslim fundamentalists did a great job in brainwashing the average Muslim with all kinds of ideas, and let me tell you, I am Muslim myself and I hate those dirty-minded fundamentalists like hell, this is what they must have told everyone about the contest: " parade of nudity where naked ****** prostitute to the judges and organisers and whoever sleeps with the organisers will be win the contest, stuff like that.." So they got easily enraged..but even if it was so, so what? I hate those fundamentalists and I hate going to most mosques because all what they talk about is politics and criticise western lifestyles, the spirit of religion is non-existent, exceptions are few. The proof is that the violence erupted right after the Friday prayers, where the fundamentalists loaded the audience with hatred, just like violence erupts after each Friday prayer in Palestine with the Israelis. The Muslims are innocent but it is the fundamentalists who feed them with hatred, and when you are in a Muslim environemnt, you don't see the right from the wrong. Dont get me wrong, I am a proud Muslim and I think my religon is perfect, but I am aware and conscious. fundamenlists are after the cntrol of their countries to gain access to weath and power, they have nothing to do with religion, they use it as an 'attraction' label. For me Turkey is the best Muslim nation and I hope it gets more and more democractic, hopefully more nations will follow their path and seperate religion from state."

The Sun, London

BRITAIN’S terrified Miss World contestants are today set to fly home from massacre-ravaged Nigeria.
The beauty pageant was dramatically switched to London in the early hours.
Girls had vowed to quit after 105 people died in religious clashes over the show. Miss England Daniella Luan, 22, had said: “I’m terrified, and I’m packing.”
Miss Scotland Paula Murphy, 24 — holed up in a hotel with her rival contestants — said: “We’re being used as the excuse. People are killing each other and saying it is all about Miss World. I can’t have that.
“I’m coming home as soon as I possibly can.”
The dark-haired Miss Scotland, from Stirling, added: “I saw TV pictures of the rioting when I woke up this morning and I felt sick.
“A beauty pageant is not worth people dying over and I want to come home. All the girls are in a panic and in tears.
There are still more than two weeks before the contest and it is just not worth risking lives.”
Miss England Daniella Luan spoke of her terror as the Red Cross revealed the massacre in the northern city of Kaduna had also left more than 500 people injured.
Many suffered horrific machete wounds or appalling burns.
Student Daniella, 22, said in the Nigerian capital Abuja: “I’m packing my bags as I talk to you. There are soldiers all round our hotel.
“I want to get on the next flight home. I’m scared, terrified. I’ve been watching the riots on TV and it is only 60 miles away from here.”
Furious Muslims last night took to the streets of Abuja to protest — but there were no immediate reports of violence in the capital.
Daniella, from Oxford, said: “I understand we’ll all be coming to Britain on the same plane.
“My parents are very concerned and they were very happy when I told them I was coming home.”
Miss Wales Michelle Bush, 22, from Cardiff, said: “The way things stand at the moment I just want to get on a plane.
“I don’t want to leave things too late. We are all frightened.”
And Miss Ireland Lynda Duffy said: “I’m trying to get on the first flight out of here.”
Lynda, 22, from Co Mayo, added: “I want to be safe — that’s more important than any title.”
The bloodbath came after months of tensions between Christians and Muslims over an Islamic court’s order that a single woman be stoned to death for having sex.
Muslims then criticised Nigeria’s decision to host Miss World.
A national newspaper poured scorn on the protests, claiming the Prophet Mohammed would probably have married a contestant.
The article caused outrage in the Muslim stronghold of Kaduna and thousands of youths went on the rampage.
They TORCHED the paper’s office, BLOCKED roads and BURNED down churches and homes while chanting “God is Great”, “Miss World is sin” and “Down with beauty”.
Eyewitnesses told how people were dragged from cars and kicked to death, butchered with machetes or “necklaced” with blazing tyres.
Christian mobs hit back, setting fire to mosques and murdering Muslims in the street. Last night Miss World boss Julia Morley made the decision to switch the venue to London at an emergency meeting with her staff in Abuja. Organisers said in a statement: “This decision was taken after careful consideration of all the issues involved and in the overall interests of Nigeria and the contestants participating in this year’s edition.”
The finals had been due to be held on December 7 at the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The event will now be held on the same date in London.
At one stage the organisers had said they were determined to stay in Nigeria.
Official Stella Din had insisted: “It is going ahead.
“We are not backing down because what happened in Kaduna had nothing to do with Miss World or the girls.
The rioting was caused by an offensive article in a newspaper.
A temporary calm returned to the streets of Kaduna last night after hundreds of soldiers poured in and a 24-hour curfew was imposed.

George Bennett, head of the Red Cross in the West African country, said the official death toll of 105 could be much higher.
Dozens more have been buried in shallow graves and scores are said to have been hurled into deep wells.
Plumes of black smoke were still rising above the city last night from burnt-out churches, cars and makeshift barricades of tyres.
The Foreign Office has warned Brits to stay away from violence-torn areas of Nigeria.
A spokesman said: “Demonstrations can become violent without warning — and there is the risk of hostage-taking for ransom.”

Germaine Greer calls it 'horrifying'. Glenda Jackson say it's 'ludicrous'. But the girls, says Miss World, have had a 'rollicking good time' despite the riots. By Simon O'Hagan

24 November 2002

Nearly a hundred anxious Miss World contestants were under guard in their hotel in the Nigerian capital of Abuja yesterday as they awaited the flight back to Britain that would mark the end of what turned out to be a disastrous attempt to open up a new frontier for the troubled beauty pageant.

With London now scheduled to host the show on 7 December, feminists and Muslims were forming an unlikely alliance in denouncing the event after it sparked riots in a town some 200 miles from Abuja that left more than 100 people dead. With rioting continuing yesterday, relatives of the contestants expressed their relief that they were being taken out of the country.

The future of the 51-year-old contest was once again in doubt as organisers, led by Julia Morley, widow of the Miss World founder Eric Morley, spent a frantic day trying to fix a London venue for it. "There are three possibilities that we are choosing between," said an organiser, who did not wish to be named. "Mrs Morley has spent all day on the phone arranging things, and we hope to make an announcement on Monday about where it will take place. Everything will definitely go ahead at the same time on the same date, and we will be keeping to the Nigerian theme. It will all be just as it would have been here, only in London."

Patrick Doyle, a Miss World spokesman speaking from Abuja, said the contestants were feeling "unduly guilty" for what happened after a newspaper article said that the prophet Mohamed would have approved of Miss World, and would "probably have chosen a wife" from among the contestants.

In a country of rising religious tension, that was enough to send thousands of Muslims on to the streets where they rioted and fought bloody battles with Christians. Late on Friday night the Miss World organisers decided that the show would be moved "in the best interests of the contestants and of Nigeria". They said they "didn't want people to use Miss World as an excuse to wreak violence on their neighbours". The Nigerian president had been unable to salvage the situation by announcing that Miss World could not be held responsible for the violence.

Miss World was taking place in Nigeria in part because the country's entrant won the title in 2001 but also because the organisers hoped it would help unite a divided country by bringing it some much- needed prestige.

Miss World was said to be the biggest international event staged by Nigeria since it gained independence in 1960, but observers say that it was always likely to be exploited by Muslims seeking to increase their power base.

The sentencing to death by stoning earlier this year of Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman who had a baby outside marriage, raised further questions about the suitability of Nigeria as Miss World host, and caused some entrants to boycott the event. But Mrs Morley insisted that Miss World's presence in Nigeria would help Ms Lawal's cause. The sentence is not due to be carried out until 2004, when the baby has been weaned.

Mr Doyle said that Miss World's departure from Nigeria was "very regrettable", but he insisted that until last week's rioting the contestants had been given an enthusiastic response everywhere they went. "They've had a rollicking good time, and the vast majority of Nigerians have been delighted to see them," he said. "The girls are saddened by what's happened. It's a great pity because this would have been a fantastic show in the tropics."

Meanwhile the worst crisis in the history of an event that is no stranger to controversy has brought renewed calls for it to be consigned to history. "I find it horrifying," said the writer Germaine Greer yesterday. Her view was echoed by the Labour MP Glenda Jackson, who described Miss World as "so old- fashioned and ludicrous". The writer Beatrix Campbell said that it shouldn't come to London and that it was a "gross event". The novelist Kathy Lette likened Miss World to "a cargo of nuclear waste which circles the world looking for a safe harbour and is shunned by all".

Reaction from relatives of the contestants yesterday was equally forthright.

The mother of the Scottish entrant in the competition, Josephine Murphy, said her daughter Paula had told her that if she won the title "it would mean nothing to me because it would always be linked to killings and I couldn't handle that". Paula had described the situation as "ridiculous".

The organiser of the annual Miss England contest said that all she wanted was her winner, Daniella Laun, home safe from Nigeria.

"It's very upsetting," said Angie Beasey. "It has been very difficult as we just don't know what's happening."

Germaine Greer, author

"It's ironic that the reason it's failed is because of hardline Muslims who feel so strongly about its depiction of women they have driven it out of the country. One hundred people have been killed; that's the real story. As for it being here, it's not going to be on anyone's calendar. We are lost in a murderous dialectic, between an amoral, post-colonial lifestyle and a militaristic religion... I find the whole thing horrifying."

Beatrix Campbell, author

"I think they're having their comeuppance. The thing has become unstageable here. In moving it to Nigeria they were presuming it was a country where they wouldn't face any political opposition ... It shouldn't come to London. It is a gross event. It's a bit like the Billy Cotton Band Show. It belongs in the era of gas masks and all sorts of cultural assumptions that would no longer enjoy a consensus in our society."

Glenda Jackson, MP and former actress

"I'm not even vaguely interested in Miss World. I don't see the point of it, it's so old-fashioned and ludicrous. What happened in Nigeria is pretty appalling and they should cancel it just because of that, but they won't, of course. By banning it, you give it an importance it no longer possesses, but I would argue that it should be banned because of what happened in Nigeria. It seems to me to be pretty disgusting [that it's still going ahead]."

Kathy Lette, novelist

"The Miss World competition is rather like one of those cargoes of nuclear waste which circle the world looking for a safe harbour and is shunned by all. Much to our shame, the toxic entertainment is now scheduled to dock in London. The contest underlines the fact that women suffer not from racial, but from facial prejudice. We get judged on how we look in a way that men don't."

A rather interesting post written by an American poster in one of the message boards:

15 reasons why Miss World sucked to begin with!!

15. WHO HOLDS A PAGEANT WITHOUT A SWIMSUIT COMPETITION?! Even Miss America, the scholarship program has a swimsuit competition. This is suppose to be an international pageant?
14. Their website took 7 years to build and yet it looked like an amateur webpage done by a 14 year old in Computer graphics class in highscool, misspelling nations like "Argentina" in their page!
13. They lie! I want to see the nielson ratings for the supposed "2 billion" viewers! Please!
12. They make up countries, or have territories and STATES be represented and claim they have the most nations in a contest! Hawaii?!!
11. They have like half a dozen reps from UK alone! Gee, no bias!
10. They allow 16 year olds to compete in their so called "worlds biggest pageant" I doubt the WOMAN of the WORLD want a 16 year old who just entered high school wearing braces representing them!
9. A british territory ALWAYS wins or advances to the Top 3! ALWAYS!
8. The pageant is LONG!!!!!!!!!!!
7. The pageant is BORING!!!!!!!!!!
6. Owner coming and announcing winner...sorry, let me grab my barf bag!
5. Their only claim to fame and shot at gold is the number of contestants they have, and thats it!
4. They make their girls prisoned in the hotel rooms or rehersal halls like concentration camps!
3. They don't give a HOOT about their fans! No publicity, no behind the scenes access like Miss Universe. Miss Universe is STRICTLY for the fans! Fans # 1, but MWO gives off the impression, they couldn't care less!
2. Having people CALL in and have that count as the ultimate deciding factor!?! I've NEVER heard something so stupid! And above all, 50% for crying out loud! Give me a break. This is no pageant! It's a POPULARITY CONTEST is what it is. Lets see who has the most family members and friends!
1. NO FREAKIN COMMON SENSE! "Gee, lets hold a pageant in Nigeria. Oh boy, we'll be the talk of the world then. We'll cure world peace and destroy world tension!" What a joke!
I could also name 105 (the lives lost) OTHER reasons why this pageant has gone down the tubes!
You know it's true! Just face it!Truth be told!

Latest update on candidates you might (or will not) rejoin the pageant

GERMANY (photo): Mr. Klemmer, President of Miss Germany Corporation (Miss Germany World Org.) wants to contact the Miss World Org. this weekend to find out if it is possible that Simone Wolf-Reinfurt can still join the Miss World pageant in London. As you will remember Simone had to cancel her flight to NIgeria because she got a virus infection. But now she feels better and seems to be ready to participate in Miss World.

SWITZERLAND: Although Miss World has moved to London, Miss Switzerland Nadine Vinzens will not participate in the pageant.

AUSTRIA: Despite the change of venue, Miss Austria Celine Roschek will not participate in Miss World. Furthermore Mr. Bauer, President of Miss Austria Corporation is thinking about sending his winners to Miss Universe in the future and not sending them to Miss World anymore.

Miss Curacao is in London and will compete for the Miss World title.

Nigerian State Says Miss World Reporter Should Die

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - A Nigerian Muslim state said Tuesday it had issued a "fatwa" urging a death sentence for the author of a newspaper story on the Miss World pageant that sparked deadly riots in northern Nigeria.

More than 200 people died in the violence in the northern city of Kaduna.

Muslims were enraged by the November 16 article which suggested the Prophet Mohammad would probably have married one of the contestants in the pageant, which has been relocated from Nigeria to London because of the bloodshed.

"What we are saying is that the Holy Koran has clearly stated that whoever insults the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad, should be killed," Zamfara State Commissioner for Information Umar Dangaladima Magaji told Reuters.

Asked to clarify the government's pronouncement, Magaji said the state had "passed a fatwa."

"It's a fatwa. It is based on the request of the people," he said, adding that this did not contradict the authority of Islamic clerics who have the powers to decree death sentences.

"Being a leader you can pass a fatwa," Magaji said.

Magaji said a number of Islamic associations in the state had asked the government to take action. The government had decided a fatwa was appropriate and could defuse anger that might otherwise lead to further bloodshed.

The Kaduna-based New Nigerian newspaper said the "fatwa" was issued by Zamfara's Deputy Governor Mamuda Aliyu Dallatun Shinkafi, who compared Isioma Daniel with British author Salman Rushdie, sentenced to death by Iranian Muslim clerics.

"Like Salman Rushdie, the blood of the ThisDay writer can be shed," the paper quoted its reporter, who attended rally at which the Shinkafi made the pronouncement, as saying.

NORTHERN NIGERIA TENSIONS

Zamfara was the first Nigerian state to adopt strict Islamic sharia law, soon after the end of military rule in Nigeria in 1999. Attempts to introduce the sharia code in the neighboring state of Kaduna sparked protests and riots from non-Muslims that killed some 3,000 people in February 2000.

The Kaduna office of ThisDay, which published the article linking the Miss World beauty queens with the Prophet Mohammad, was razed last week by Muslim youths.

ThisDay editors told Reuters that Daniel, the paper's style editor, had fled to the United States after tendering her resignation in the wake of the crisis.

The editor of the Saturday edition of the paper in which the article appeared was arrested for questioning but has since been released, the editors said.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking from Abuja Monday in an interview with CNN, said "irresponsible journalism" was to blame for Nigeria's latest communal bloodletting.

Religious leaders have warned the violence could torpedo Nigeria's presidential elections next year, already overshadowed by the country's worst cycle of religious and political violence since independence from Britain in 1960.

The Miss World pageant was hastily relocated to London, but there pageant organizers came up against more opposition with media and lobby groups accusing them of having blood on their hands.

Trucks ferried bodies from hospitals in Nigeria's northern city of Kaduna for mass burials Monday as calm returned after the violence.

Troops enforced a curfew six days after Christian-Muslim riots broke out. The Red Cross said Monday the death toll was 215, while civil rights and hospital sources put the figure at 250.

I think Philippines look well in the swimsuit shot...pero one thing's for sure, the makeup artists have surely eliminated many who looked good in the pre-pageant shots....it's easier to choose the laudable ladies now than before

Hong Kong's Victoria Jolly! :beauty:

What are the chances for Hong Kong to take the crown this time?! And what are the political, socio-economic implications of this when Mainland China hosts the event next year?! Hhmm...

China's Wu Ying Na!

She's only the second entrant from Mainland China in this event and people are skeptical about her chances! Personally, I think she's inconsistent in her pix! But she could pull off a semi-final slot since China is set to host this event in 2003!

I was just wondering about what would happen if Hong Kong's Victoria Jolly wins this year and China hosts next year's event. Will the Chinese people regard it as a Chinese victory (since HK is China's possession)? Or the other way around?! :wondering:

London (November 29, 2002) Powdered, preened and ready to perform after fleeing from Muslim- Christian rioting in Nigeria, Miss World contestants were back in action Thursday in their first day of rehearsals for the relocated pageant.

"I was a little bit sad as it was not our fault," said Miss Italy, Susanne Zuber, 19 , taking a break from practicing her catwalk moves at a West London film studio. "But we should go on. It is a good experience."

The glamorous extravaganza pulled out of Nigeria last weekend after rioting in the northern city of Kaduna left more than 200 people dead. Fighting broke out after a Nigerian newspaper published an article suggesting Islamic founding prophet would have approved of the pgeant.

As they brushed their hair, touched up makeup and strutted on high heels Thursday, more then 80 rlgantly dressed contestants appeared unfazed by their hasty flight from capital Abuja.

"I am quite calm and composed," said India's representative 22 yo model Shruti Sharma. "Some of the girls did panic and that created panic among the other girls. But it has not been very stressful."

Miss World Organisation's Julia Morley who chartered a plane to carry the beauty queens to London, has rescheduled the grand finale for December 7 at a North London exhibition hall. Despite sleepness nights and frantic efforts to reorganise the event, which is watched by 2 billion people in over 100 countries, she remained upbeat.

"You have only one way to go and that is up, " she said but added she would only "just scrap through" financially.

"If I had a last minute sponsor it would be a blessing," added Morley, whose late husband Eric launched Miss World in 1951 and ran it until his death two years ago.

The pageant whose motto is "Beauty with a Purpose," is striving to show it is a forward thinking event for the 21s century. Morley says the organisation has raised more than 150 million pounds (US$320 million) for children's charities throughout the world.

"We are not looking just at beauty," said blonde haired Miss Israel, Carol Lowenstein, 19 who intends to study business management and publicity. "You need to have a personality, be smart and ambitious."

Jamaica's entry, 19 yo Danielle Ohayon, said the pageant was a "learning experience."

"It is a way for me to meet other people around the world and to experience a different side of life," she said as she sipped hot chocolate to ward off the dark London winter.

Although footage of the women wearing swimsuits has already been shot in Nigeria, on the big night they will not prance into the catwalk in anything so scanty, organisers said.

According to caterers who prepared a lunch feast of chicken, salmon and desserts for the contestants, that might be just as well.

"The chocolate gateaux has been popular," said one of the chefs, Karen. "If they can't fit into their swimsuits, then dont blame me."

Breaking News

A major change will take place in this year's pageant: instead of 10, there will be 20 semi-finalists.

It is still unknown how it will work, however, there is a chance that 10 will be determined by SMS voting, and the other 10 to be determined by judges scoring.

The organization hasn't yet decided if from 20 they will go down to 10, or 5 candidates.

After the 20 are announced, they will come out in their evening gowns, with swimsuits' videos on the background and contestants talking a little about themselves.

It is the first time one of the three major beauty pageants in the world will have 20 semi-finalists. The maximum had been 16, in the first years of Miss Universe.

Miss America had 20 semi-finalists in 2001.

The last time Belgium made it in Miss Universe was in 1992, when Anke van Dermeersch made it to the Final 6 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The last time Belgium made it in Miss World was in 1996, when Laurence Borremans made it to the Top 10 in Bangalore, India.

Let's all see how Julie will do next year.

*Manuela Osk Hagardottir was crowned Ungfru Miss Island 2002 last May. She was originally set to represent Iceland in Miss International 2002 last September in Japan. For some unknown reasons, she did not compete in the said pageant. She represented her country in Miss Skandinavia 2003 last November 2 in Helsinki, Finland. Manuela's participation in Panama next year marks Iceland's comeback in Miss Universe after a 5-year absence.

**Celine Roschek was crowned Miss Austria 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, she joined the boycott condemning Amina Lawal's case. She has strongly expressed her desire to see action in Panama come May. Her return marks Austria's comeback in Miss Universe after a 3-year absence.

***Katerina Prusova was crowned Miss Cesky Republicky 2002 last April. She was originally set to compete in Miss World 2002. However, her 1st runner-up (Katerina Smrzova) was sent instead. This automatically means that Prusova is now headed to Panama in May.

My thoughts on last night's Miss Asia Pacific 2002 pageant... :D

-I ain't goin' around shoutin' and rejoicin' about KOREA's victory. All I can say is, I'm okay with her victory last night. She was pretty, truly photogenic and captivating indeed!
-RUSSIA's feat last night came in exactly 3 years later when it met the very same fate back in '99.
-Kudos to the interpreters last night! Great job! Miss Asia Pacific Quest certainly learned its lesson!
-I'm shocked 25 delegates made it for this year's pageant. Initial reports claimed there were only 16.
-FIJI truly deserved her slot in the Top 5! Very eloquent indeed!
-It's a good thing a newbie like TURKMENISTAN participated this year.
-Paolo Montalban is a good host. Nuff said.
-There were a lot of stunning national costumes.
-PERU's (Best In National Costume) costume reminded me of a Norwegian bunad.

-I ain't surprised the pageant lasted for nearly 5 hours. Blame it on nasty advertising and poor segment planning.
-It was sooooo awkward seeing DingDong and Paolo onstage literally close together... Bahala na kayo kung anong gusto niyong isipin. Hehe.
-PHILIPPINES' hairdo and American twang ain't very much impressive or flattering at all.
-Where did USA come from? Everything pertaining to her was a real mess!
-I wonder why Taiwan, Israel, New Zealand and Australia did not send delegates. Hmmm...
-Mediocre dance and song numbers... Ho-hum...
-The stage-- yes, the stage-- was a rip-off from the MU2001 stage in Bayamon.
-I don't see how PHILIPPINES won the Miss Telegenic special award. Luto talaga!
-The biggest heartbreaker of the night-- COSTA RICA not making it to the Top 10! Whatta shocker indeed!
-Two judges were visibly shaking... Antok na! Nakakabastos lang coz they knew they were part of the judging panel and that they were on national TV. What a shame.

The Road to Indiana :D

With 40 girls already crowned in their respective state pageants, I'd have to say the strongest to succeed Shauntay Hinton (so far) is Miss California USA 2003 Candace Marie Sanders. :)

http://www.datucrown.org/img/candice_misscausa03.jpg http://www.datucrown.org/img/candice_and_janet.jpg

Prior to her victory in the Californian state pageant scene, Candace has won 1st runner-up in the Miss Tennessee USA pageant twice in a row. (2001, 2002)

The very last time California won Miss USA was in 1992, with Shannon LaRhea Marketic winning it by a landslide in Wichita, Kansas.

I just finished watching the Miss World 2002 Preview Show. I'm sorry I wasn't able to announce it here sa thread. I just found out about it 10 minutes before it started.

It greatly echoed last year's U Decide Show, where the worldwide audience got to know each of the delegates days before the actual coronation took place.

I'm really, really impressed with our very own Kate! :whatthe: She surely proved her detractors wrong! Kudos to Madame Stella Araneta, Seńorita Colombia prez Javier Murillo and Colombian couturier Alfredo Barraza!!!

I'm worried about Portugal... :whatthe:

It did not send a delegate to Miss World 2002...

Another disturbing fact is that the Miss Portugal 2002 pageant was originally due last month. But still Iva Lamarao has not crowned her successor.

What is happening to Portugal? :wondering:

Will it send a delegate to Panama?

Hello!

Oo nga, ang tagal na wala pa ring news about Miss Portugal pageant. Dapat kasi nag top 10 si Iva, para maganahan mag pageant sa kanila. Anyway, a friend who went to Portugal last summer said Portugal is a sparsely populated country daw.

Don't you think na medyo late ang Miss Spain Pageant ngayon? Will there be a possibility na Lola ALcocer will represent na lang Spain for Miss Universe, and the winner on April next year na lang? Wishful thinking...

Ang ganda talaga ni Elodie. Lalo na kung yung very natural looking. Sayang talaga siya.

Musique: Oh di ba?! Kitams! I'm really worried na about Portugal... Wag naman sana magkatotoo ang iniisip ko... I'm scolding myself for entertaining the wild thought na baka Portugal ain't sending delegates to Miss Universe or Miss World anymore... Possible kaya? :confusing:

I mean let's face it... Portugal is one of the most underrated participants in the two super pageants. It has never made it in Miss Universe. In Miss World naman, I can't remember a Portuguese ever making it either. Baka fed up na sila kaya deadma na... Di kaya? :confusing:

Onga eh... April 28 is rather LATE for a national pageant whose winner is Miss Universe-bound... Let's wait for further announcements.

Yeah, Lola would definitely be a strong contender in Panama if ever... Let's keep our fingers crossed. ;)

This is the first time I saw Misses Greece and Turkey in a picture together. We all know that these two countries are not in good terms because of the Cyprus issue. I remember Evelina and Miss Turkey 2001 never spoke to each other in Bayamon. Their coldness is also similar between the Miss Lebanons and Miss Israels, but not that well known. And oh yeah, Miss Cyprus is a doll.

I WOULDN'T TRADE THE EXPERIENCE FOR THE WORLD - Mia Rahaman on Miss Universe 2002

"From 75 to ten that’s hard, that’s really hard, lots of pressure. I was disappointed, but I wasn’t who the judges were looking for. They were looking for someone like Miss Russia. And I wasn’t really a Miss Russia. I think she’s a beautiful girl and a wonderful person. I am really happy she’s the one who won. I would have picked her to win! Although I didn’t want to pick a winner, I was trying to save that place for me!”

- Mia Rahaman on Miss Universe 2002

FROM the rugged grasstrack of Guyana to the elegance, glitz and glamour of Miss Universe in Puerto Rico.

A huge challenge? Hardly.

Miss Guyana 2002, Mia Rahaman, likes to think of herself as an extremist, one who lives for challenges.

When she decided to take on Miss Guyana, she knew that if there were odds stacked up against her, she would work it through with her beauty, charm and her radiant smile.
And she did. She was crowned Miss Guyana on April 13 and won the chance to represent her country in Puerto Rico to participate in the Miss Universe Pageant.

On April 22, Mia checked in at the luxurious Courtyard Marriot Hotel in Washington D.C., just a short walk from the White House.

There, her coaches were Mr. Robert Dover, trainer of beauty pageant contestants; Ms. Laine Angus, Miss District of Columbia and Miss USA first runner-up 2001; Ms. Anita Sanders, former New York and Washington D.C. runway and photographic model; Mrs. Omarosa Satllworth, winner of 23 beauty pageant titles and trainer of a number of beauty pageant winners; American designer Mr. LeRoi Carey; and Mr. Roger Gary, outstanding Guyanese designer based in New York.

Her daily routine while in the US included a trip to the health spa, a three-hour workout session, and steam and Jacuzzi baths.

Mia enjoyed Dover’s sessions, and when she wasn’t getting the walk right, he stepped into high heels and showed her how it’s done!

Mia also did not have a problem with Omarosa.

“She knows what she is talking about. She has been in the pageant industry for years, competed in several as well. She trained the reigning Miss USA. So I had no problem taking advice from her - how to wear my hair, how to work the dress, the shoes”, Mia told the Sunday Chronicle.

Mia came to the Chronicle for the interview. Clad in white sleeveless top and blue jeans, she drove to our Bel Air Park location in her jeep. A suitcase of clothes for a photo shoot was in the back of the jeep. Her hair was simply pulled to the back, and she wore no make up.

Bad for a photograph? That’s what she thought! She didn’t need make up! Cameraman Mike Norville did his magic and the result was, as they say, “picture perfect”

Friends forever

Picking up her story, Mia said she arrived in Puerto Rico on May 11. She was just in time for a fashion walk. Then it was time to meet her rooming partner, Miss Kenya, Julie Njeru.

“Thank God, I had a good roommate. No problems with her. Julie is a lovely girl. Sometimes I had to be screaming: ‘Julie, we have to go now, Julie get your sash, Julie your earrings’. It was great rooming with her,” Mia said.

Two days after all the contestants arrived in Puerto Rico, rehearsals started.

The main trainer was a man named Scott. According to Mia, you can see him in the Sandra Bullock film `Miss Congeniality’.

“I enjoyed rehearsals. It started off with Celine Dion’s ‘Here comes the sun’. We would walk in and Scott would be like: ‘Oh, ladies!’ (As in the ‘hello, anybody home’, way). And then he’d go, ‘Here comes the sun’ and get the music into fast beat and everybody would be all into it and dancing and having a good time,” Mia related.

Miss Universe is full of glitz and glamour, Mia said, and she wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.

However, it wasn’t fun at all times for Mia and the other delegates.

“Sometimes a lot of the girls complained. They were like: ‘This is just horrible. I feel like I’m just on show. I feel like I’m a piece of meat’. And you did get that feeling sometimes.

“You’re on two hotel floors. There’s a security desk with TV screens and they’re just monitoring your every move. You can’t leave your floor without a supervisor. When you reach to the lobby, it’s barred off, and there are people there as soon as you get off and they’re like: ‘Hey, look Guyana…Brazil’, and you always have to be pleasant. Don’t even think of frowning, don’t even think of looking puzzled. Just smile! Smile, even if you don’t have a clue. Just smile. I built some good face muscles, I can tell you that,” Mia said.

“It’s a lot of stress,” she made clear.

As if that wasn’t enough pressure, days before Pageant night, one of Mia’s chaperones and the Public Relations Officer of the Miss Guyana/Universe pageant criticised her for wearing her hair down and for her choice of gown in the preliminary competition.

“I am the one who was competing in this competition. I had to be happy. I wasn’t going to wear my hair down, but Omarosa told me to. She said, ‘Mia you have beautiful hair, these pageant people love hair, loose it down and work it, make the hair move’. I did that. I’m just more comfortable taking advice from an expert than from someone who’s new,” Mia said.

According to Mia, not all the contestants were what she expected of the delegates. She said she glued with people who were real, down to earth.

“A few friends I will keep in touch with forever are (Ms) Northern Mariana Islands, (Ms) Namibia, (Ms) Nigeria, (Ms) Bahamas, (Ms) Jamaica, (Ms) Cayman Islands,” Mia said.

When it came to pageant night, Mia’s heart pounded furiously.

She was not picked in the top ten.

Disappointed she was.

Despite feeling like the world had come down on her shoulders, she had to put on the “smile” because members of her family were in the audience, waving the Guyana flag and trying to get a glimpse of her.

“I walked off stage, took a deep breath, and decided that it was all over, time to have fun,” Mia said.

“From 75 to ten that’s hard, that’s really hard, lots of pressure. I was disappointed, but I wasn’t who the judges were looking for. They were looking for someone like Miss Russia. And I wasn’t really a Miss Russia. I think she’s a beautiful girl and a wonderful person. I am really happy she’s the one who won. I would have picked her to win! Although I didn’t want to pick a winner, I was trying to save that place for me,” Mia said candidly.

For the future, Mia is considering taking up a job offer to be the Caribbean and Latin American representative of a Miami-based company to promote and recruit models for a new line of clothing and fashion magazine.

It’s no longer what she fantasised about as a child and an adolescent. Mia knows what Miss Universe is and would like to teach the new Guyanese delegate everything that she can.

In the meantime, she is always proud to be wearing the crown of Miss Guyana/Universe.
