I would be much of a shame if yoyr brought the pageant out of Nigeria for that reason. Remember that Nigeria is one nation but with very different beliefs. As what was said before, the people in the government in the north hardly listens to the people in the south. The Nigerian government is using this pageant similar to other nations trying to host the Olympics or the World Cup so that they'll be put in the center stage and that is what Nigeria is simply doing right now. As from teh very word of this person coutrtesy of cnn.com "Having the pageant in Nigeria can put a lot of focus on the Nigerian government and its laws. The more controversy this whole thing creates the better! It would be a shame if the pageant moves to 'safer grounds' and a 'more acceptable' area. Rayan de Zeeuw". I think in this issue we should stick to one. You cannot be the gray area on issues of importance. You must take a side. And by sticking to Nigeria as the pageant venue it will put them more on the limelight thus having to think twice on what action the Religious Fundamentalist on the north must take.

For starters, I never mentioned or even suggested that the pageant be brought out of Nigeria. I just thought na sana they sticked to Sun City as the venue long before.

Well, in fairness, Vernalynn "Verns" Buckley deserves the right to be called SUPERMODEL OF THE WORLD 2002 because she has the right qualities that a supermodel has. Kung tutuusin, when I watched that event noong Tuesday, I knew that she would be the one. Though she didn't reap any special awards (kasi naman kapag hinakot niya ang lahat ng awards sa gabing iyon e di halatang luto na, di ba) she stood out among the 8.
Well, here are my rankings for the competition:
1. Verns Buckley
2. Abbygale Santos
3. Sherlyn Ram
4. Khrista Danilo
5. Ivy Tablante
6. Angie Lelis
7.Jann Sapud
8. Clare Honrade
http://agui.homestead.com/files/verns.jpg
Verns will be competing on Dec. 9, 2002 in Punta Barcela, Dominican republic. Go girl!!!
By the way, fyi: PITOY MORENO, BEN FERRALES, and CESAR GAUPO was in the competition of Supermodel. They were only awed at 2 candidates - Verns and Abbygale. Hay! Question is mapipilit kaya ni Pitoy si Joey na mapasali si Verns sa Binibini?
Sa Bodyshots naman, I found it too pageant-ish yung selection ng final 5 for girls. Take note na nagkaroon ng tie sa 8 candidates na babae kaya natapos ng 12:00 PM.
http://agui.homestead.com/files/arianna.jpg
"Hakot Queen" si Ariana Javellona. Jeanne Harn, Natasha Yexley made it to the top 5. Paui Quinto and Charisse de Guzman as well. But the sad part was, two former Supermodel 2001 Finalists did not make the cut...Jeanelyn "Jeng" Cuyugan and Charisse Arayi. Ang very controversial issue na naganap was bakit itong sina Natasha, jeanne, and Ariana were in the top 5 when in fact they didn't know how to walk? Well, enough is said...basta may nanalo tapos!
And the question is after Body Shots...Binibini 2003 or Best Model of the World 2003. I wouldn't be surprised if some girls in Body Shots vie for Best Model of the World...besides mas magaganda ang at stake sa kanila in Best Model Philippines kaysa sa Binibini.

AUSTRIA BOYCOTTS MISS WORLD CONTEST IN NIGERIA
Nigerian Miss World Organisers Say Contestants are Back
Vienna, Austria (Thursday - Oct. 31,2002 - AFP) Austria will not take part in the Miss World 2002 competition in Nigeria, to protest the sentence of death by stoning handed down againsts an unmarrired mother, an official for the national beauty pageant organisers said yesterday.
Miss Austria, 19 yo Celine Roschek, will not consider travelling to Nigeria until single mother Amina Lawal, 32 sentenced to death by stoning by an Islamic court earlier this year, has left the west African country, said Miss Austria Corporation Manager Emil Bauer.
"We are not going for the official reason that this woman is going to be stoned. Nigerian law does not dictate stonings, but it cannot influence the Sharia. I will not believe it until she is out of the country," he said.
Nigeria's federal government has said that the use of Sharia law in criminal cases is unconstitutional, and that stoning sentences are unacceptable.
On Tuesday, Nigerian Junior Foreign Minister Dubem Onyia reiterated his government's promise that it would not allow its citizens to be stoned to death.
"The federal government of Nigeria will not stand back to watch any citizen of this country be dehumanised," he said. "And I am telling you that as a member of the cabinet."
In the three years since Nigeria's return to civilian rule, a dozen Muslim majority northern states have reintroduced Sharia criminal law, including harsh punishment for adultery.
President Oluseun Obasanjo has said he hopes the sentences will not be carried out, and his supporters such as Onyia have promised they will eventually be annuled by the courts.
But, in what observers and diplomats regard as a political fudge designed to avoid a dispute with Muslim leaders, the federal government has put off challenging the law's constitutionality until a defendant appeals it all the way to the supreme court.
Around half the national beauty contest winners invited to compete at Miss World threatened to stay away from Nigeria after Lawal was sentenced.
But the Nigerian organisers of the prestigious beauty contests said Tuesday that all of them had dropped their boycott threats after assurances from Nigerian federal authorities that the sentences would not be carried out.
"Slowly the contestants came back, all 110 of them," said Guy Murray-Bruce, whose firm is hosting the December 7 event.

I didn't expect that a harmless topic such as beauty pageants would be a source of a head ache thanks to some people.
When I posted my opinion in the topmosst section of this page, the intention was to have a strong and healthy exchanges of points of view. I wasn't making an issue out of what jensie has mentioned but I'm showing a mere opinion. When has it become that stating an opinion is a big CRIME. Clearly what you have been orchestrating here is a big defamation of myself and as well and undermining my capabnilites as a person. I was HOPING FOR A HEALTHY DISCUSSION. AND IT IS SUCH A SHAME WERE SOME PEOPLE HAS TO BE SO NARROW MINDED WITH ONE PERSON'S OPINION. Also how dare you brand me as being bookish? Who the hell are you LARA to question my emotional and intellectual ability. You don't even personally know me, so who the hell are you to undermine my ability. By the way I know the technicals at the same time that I know other things. And don't ever, ever and never accuse me as being bookish, because I am not a bookish person. The main aim as I would like to reiterate was to have a healthy exchanges of different views and I wasn't intending to start a fight as what you've hurled upon in a post above. Before you judge others, better look at yourself first before it is too late. I know what my place in this society is and I know where I'll be embarking on in the future. So never, ever try to underestimate me again because you are inferior compare to me.

Ok since you're superior and all, JENSIE and I will stop posting here. Since you know everything, we'll just leave it up to you to keep this thread afloat.
YOU HEAR THAT EVERYBODY? NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO POST HERE EXCEPT FOR BUBBLES!! WE'RE ALL INFERIOR THAT'S WHY WE'RE NOT ALLOWED TO POST HERE!

What transpired a fews days back was a big and bad case of MISCOMMUNICATION and LACK OF SENSIBILITY.
We should be sensible enough with others' feelings. Name-calling is definitely not an option-- not in this thread.
I strongly suggest that before another brawl and bashing spree ensue, the involved parties must immediately resolve their conflicts of interest through PM. Resolve it there and then.
If this is achieved, then this thread might just be a peaceful and harmonious place for everyone.

BREAKING NEWS :whatthe:
New Zealand retracts! It will participate in Nigeria!
http://stuff.co.nz/inl/common/imageViewer/0,1445,87724,00.jpg http://images.tvnz.co.nz/news/people/huljich_rachel.jpg
New Zealand's Miss World contestant, Rachel Huljich, will go to the beauty pageant in Nigeria because she believes a boycott will not help a woman who faces a death sentence.
Pageant organisers plan to condemn the sentence, handed to the woman condemn a death sentence handed to a womanntefor having a child outside marriage.
Ms Huljich said yesterday that she had decided to attend next month after learning that the Nigerian woman sentenced to be stoned to death, 31-year-old Amina Lawal, had said a boycott would not help her.
Some contestants had planned to boycott the pageant in protest at the sentence imposed on the woman under Sharia, a radical interpretation of Islamic law, by a religious court in northern Nigeria.
Ms Huljich said she was encouraged that the Nigerian Government had indicated the sentence would be overturned by higher courts.
"Amina herself said, 'Let them come' ... I think my voice will be heard more by going."
The 18-year-old Aucklander said she was also influenced by the European Parliament and Amnesty International, which she said did not support a boycott.
The death sentence is due to be carried out in February 2004, after Amina Lawal has finished weaning her eight- month-old girl, but an appeal has yet to go before Nigeria's Supreme Court.
Ms Huljich said Miss World organisers planned to read a statement on behalf of the contestants at the start of the December 7 competition, condemning the sentence.
She believed that of the 110 contestants, only Miss Denmark was still considering a boycott of the event, in the capital, Abuja.

Faye wins the crown
A 21-year-old woman who spoke about the spiritual connectedness she feels when in love is the new Miss Trinidad and Tobago/Universe.
That was the answer of Miss San Fernando, Faye Alibocas, to the final question segment in Saturday night’s pageant, which was organised by franchise-holder Caribbean Communications Network and held at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya.
The question was: “You will be attracted to many people over the course of your lifetime. How do you know when you have fallen in love?”
Miss Brazil, 19-year-old Leah Mari Guevara, said she knew she was in love if she couldn’t go through the course of the day without thinking of the person or talking to them.
She was judged first runner-up.
Miss Tunapuna, Magdalene Walcott, also 19, said she had to be at ease with the person and he would have to accept her for her—an answer which placed her as the second runner-up.
The majority of the crowd seemed happy with the results, with displeasure only being evident when Miss Princes Town, Joy Daniel—who had a large contingent in the left wing expressing vociferous support—was not selected among the final six.
The show began promptly at 8 p.m. with most of the guests having been seated long before that. The delegates were introduced to the audience—both live and on TV6—in an opening act that was loosely based on the HBO series, Sex and the City.
Roger George, one of two entertainers for the evening, serenaded the crowd with Brian McKnight’s “Anytime”. His presentation was, as always, close to flawless with his powerful baritone flooding the auditorium.
Laura Pierre was next, treating the guests to the track entitled “Fallin’”off of her debut album and looking good enough to go backstage and join the other delegates.
Next came the swimwear segment.
A clip had been earlier shown of the delegates discussing how many people tend to see beauty pageants as a cattle show and expressing their desire to prove that the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe Pageant was more about intelligence than bodies.
So it was somewhat ironic that the swimsuit segment debunked that premise to an extent.
The vision of Peter Elias, official stylist of the Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2003 Pageant, sought to portray the delegates as borderline dominating femme fatales. Each contestant appeared on stage suggestively posed on a bamboo litter that was carried by four buffed, barebacked men with tassels wrapped around them like harnesses. The swimsuits were copper creations from the The Inn Collection that featured a halter back neckline that plunged past the waist and laced up to the bust.
The evening gown segment of the pageant fared much better. The segment focused on showcasing the talents of local designers such as Zad and Eastman, Claudia Pegus, Heather Jones, Warner and Adam and Jean Ramjohn
One of the delegates, Giselle Legall representing Belmont, appeared on stage in a gown of her own design.
The accent was on overt sexiness as quite a number of the delegates had gowns that were transparent with a bit of lining strategically placed to maintain propriety.
The delegates were then asked questions based on their personal bio by one of the show's two hosts, cyclist Michael Phillips.
The co-host was Leslie-Ann Wells.
Kudos to Dr Jean Campbell who, as Interview Skills Co-ordinator, was responsible for coaching the delegates to speak “on camera”. They appeared, for the most part, calm and confident and answered their questions without hesitation and coherently.
After another performance by George, the six semi-finalists were named: Alibocas, Guevara, Walcott, Miss Belmont Giselle Legall, Miss St Augustine Donna Pierre, and Miss Woodbrook Raenika Belleville.
Each delegate was then asked another round of questions to whittle it down to three finalists.
Each delegate answered her question flawlessly with only Alibocas fumbling a bit on her answer to the question whether she thought it was necessary to understand the foreign language lyrics of some classical music. But she quickly made up for that by singing an Italian aria that stunned the audience.
In an interview with the Express after the pageant, the three finalists appeared happy that it was all over.
Asked what was the first thing they were going to do, Guevara exclaimed, “Take off my shoes and sleep for a week!”
Walcott said she couldn’t wait to move on with her life and start doing what she loved, singing parang with her group, which she had been forced to put on hold due to her schedule for the show.
Alibocas, who had not worked for the last two months due to her hectic schedule, said she would have to call her clients and tell them she would not be available for another 12 months.

FORMER MISS UNIVERSE FLIES HOME TO GET MARRIED
November 2
The "prince" may have been a little out of shape and not that young, but for Porntip Nakhirunkanok yesterday at the beginning of her elegant wedding ceremony, Herb Simon was the man to cap her real-life fairytale. "For four years he pursued me, and for four years I tried to run away," the former Miss Universe said. "But finally I stopped to wonder why I tried to run away from the best man I had ever found. And here we are."
The American billionaire, 57, meanwhile, seemed to enjoy the frenetic activities of a Thai-style wedding, which began with a khan mak (traditional offerings to the bride's family) procession from the Peninsula Bangkok Hotel across the Chao Phya River to the Oriental Hotel's pier. "It's a fascinating ceremony, and my brother and sister-in-law also loved it, although it's a little bit too warm with all these traditional costumes," said the smiling groom.
The Hae Khan Mak promptly began at the appointed time with Thai national artist Chinnakorn Klailard yodelling and leading the way to The Oriental Hotel, where |the bride was waiting. Simon, accompanied by his brother Fred and his wife, had to pass through "silver and golden gates" guarded by close friends and relatives of the bride. After paying "tolls", averaging Bt500 in each envelope, they were allowed through. Throughout the proceedings, Bangkok Governor Samak Sundaravej, who represented the bride's family, explained the meaning of each step to Simon.
At the Author's Lounge, Pornthip sashayed down the stairs with her mother. She looked radiant in a cream-coloured Thai dress with golden thread. Looking younger than his years, Simon wore a white Thai silk praratchatan (a traditional formal Thai costume for men). Among the guests was Thailand's first Miss Universe, Apsara Hongsakula. Others included Payap and Poruethai Shinawatra, Rasri Bualert, Chitra Techapaibul and Lawan Chooprasert.
As with most celebrity events there are bound to be a few glitches. This one was no different. When it was time for the couple to unveil the sinsod (offerings), members of the press started clamouring for a closer look, despite the emcee's pleas to make room for the bride and groom, who looked rather overwhelmed. Samak, in his usual gruff manner, screamed for all to hear at the press to back off, his demeanour rather out of context at a solemn wedding ceremony.
The Khan Mak contained cash worth Bt9.99 million (nine being believed to be an auspicious number in Thailand), nine gold bars of five baht weight each and Bt60 million worth of jewellery. A US$10-million (Bt430-million) house in an exclusive Los Angeles area was earlier presented to Pui by Simon. The wedding ring was a nine-carat diamond by Harry Winston, known as jeweller to the rich and famous. The groom received a simple wedding band from his bride.
Later, 50 young men and women dressed in beautiful gold Thai costumes surrounded the couple. The result was a dramatic picture of the bride and groom amid a sea of gold. As souvenirs, the members of the press were presented with boxes each containing a rose made of sugar. As is customary, the couple made merit by releasing 35 kilorams of eels, nine large turtles and one tapap nam (soft shelled turtle) into the Chao Phya River. Pui's mother Dawan made a wish for the couple to have a good and happy life together.
The press later enjoyed a buffet lunch at the Jintala restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel. The couple and their guests had their lunch at Jester's, also at the Peninsula. The event may have been a solemn one, but it had its light-hearted moments too. When one of the reporters asked Pui if she was ready to start a family she answered laughingly: "Definitely, but I have to get Herb to start practising." When Simon was asked why he had finally decided to get married he answered: "I've been chasing her for almost four years until finally she stopped running."

A new concept is introduced for the first time this year to select Miss South Africa 2002. Read on...
'REALITY' MISS SOUTH AFRICA
[Cape Town] - Taking its cue from the success of reality TV, this year’s Miss South Africa pageant will open the entire judging and selection process to public scrutiny.
Similar to the Idols judging process cameras will follow the every move of three soon-to-be-appointed judges through the ten-day casting process watching them make their selections and capturing their opinions.
The format and style of the pageant will give us the opportunity to get to know Miss South Africa and what she is about.
There are more television productions, five in all, as well as profile broadcasts of the finalists. The finale will feature 12 finalists as opposed to the usual 16 in previous years.
More shows mean that the viewers have more opportunity to get to know the contestants. It also means that the contestants get more time to have their say.
Interactivity is another key aspect. In addition to the Miss Congeniality competition, there is a most beautiful legs competition -and a Viewers’ Choice competition, which will be voted for by the public.
According to organisers, the aim of all this “reality” is, “to create a very real, sexy street-smart winner who is representative of today’s South Africa”. Watch the press for more details.

Here's an old but interesting article... Read on... :D
Most Countries Skipping Miss Universe Pageant
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - There will be no Miss Great Britain, no Miss Kenya, no Miss Nepal and no Miss Cuba when contestants compete on Friday for the title of Miss Universe.
The reasons these and other countries didn't send contestants ranged from political instability to philosophical objections and from glitches in organizing dnational pageants to simply a lack of interest, AP reported.
More than half of the world's countries will be missing. Though the United Nations has 189 member states, there are only 77 contestants this year at the Puerto Rican pageant, down slightly from the 79 who competed last year in Cyprus, and the 84 who participated in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999.
Australia fielded a contestant last year, but this year the organizer in Sydney, Jim Davie, turned down a license to hold a national pageant. He said potential sponsors saw it as ``out of touch with a modern society.''
"The Australian media has largely ignored the event, which has made fund-raising to cover costs impossible. Interest among contestants has also declined,'' he said.
Britain participated last year, but the national director was unable to hold a pageant this year. "I guess he couldn't get it together,'' said Annette Cammer, Miss Universe's director of international pageants.
Cuba doesn't participate because the New York-based Miss Universe Organization excludes countries that don't have diplomatic relations with the United States, Cammer said.
Haiti isn't fielding a contestant because no promoter has taken an interest, "probably because of the difficult economic situation we are in,'' said Culture and Communication Minister Guy Paul.
In many Arab countries of the Middle East, beauty pageants simply aren't considered acceptable. In Saudi Arabia and Iran, it's unthinkable for women to leave home without being covered head-to-toe, let alone parade around in bikinis.
From Africa, seven countries are represented. Those missing include nations that have faced extreme poverty and war - such as Congo, Burundi and Somalia.
Miss Mozambique didn't come because the local affiliate wouldn't pay for her mother to travel with her, contest organizers said.
***Sayang naman... :depressed: So I'm automatically assuming na once Cuba establishes diplomatic ties with the US, then it would field a delegate to Miss Universe. Sayang din yung Haiti... Porket wala lang may interest na mag-promote nito'y wala na rin sila... Howell... :(

Miss Namibia is mobile.
Lucious beauty, Ndapewa Alfons, got her driver's license recently. She can now drive her own car, a sparkling 1.3 Toyota Tazz given to her by Pupkewitz Toyota, one of the main sponsoring companies of the Miss Namibia pageant.
23-year-old Ndapewa collected her car about three weeks ago but she still had to get a driver's license. This she solved by passing out last week. In future, whenever the blue Tazz is spotted, everybody will know who is inside. :D

When one of the reporters asked Pui if she was ready to start a family she answered laughingly: "Definitely, but I have to get Herb to start practising." When Simon was asked why he had finally decided to get married he answered: "I've been chasing her for almost four years until finally she stopped running." Cora Sukhynaga, THE NATION

It's an interview of AMACU's official school publication kay Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2002 Karen Loren Agustin shortly after she won the national title last March.
_____________________
When I saw her that night on the television, crowned with the prestigious beauty title of Binibining Pilipinas Universe, I told myself that I should be the first one to have an interview with her. Luckily, my wish was granted. Just two days after the coronation night, I saw her once again. She was walking along the catwalk like she used to do, wearing that perfect smile and with the same confidence that made her way rise from obscurity to be a beauty queen. She must be the most talked about girl in the campus so far, so why are we going to hide her from you guys? So without further ado, we bring you Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2002 Karen Loren Medrano-Agustin to talk about her pageant experience and (what else?) about herself in her first exclusive one-on-one interview.
She’s 19 years old, born on September 23, 1982. Karen’s a junior AB Mass Com student of AMACU (of course!), stands 5 feet 7 inches, and tips the scale of 114lbs. She listens to any kind of music and loves the song “Tattooed on my Mind” and she cites the “Vampire Chronicles” as her favorite book. She has been playing the piano for 13 years and she loves running, playing table tennis and volleyball, and watching TV during her free time. One thing that I really can’t convince myself to believe until this time is that she loves to eat!
You enjoy what? I enjoy modeling. Yah, so much! But other than that I do some shows. When you saw me at the Dickie’s show (CAS Day presentation during the AMA Foundation Day celebration last November, remember?) I was just staring to be a model then and so it goes.
What is your beauty secret? Oh my gosh! (laughs) I sleep a lot. I eat a lot. You really have to sleep a lot. Probably that’s the secret and I don’t put anything on my face. Nothing. It’s just, after you put make up, you’ll have to wash your face. You have to clean it. Kaya kahit yung tipong antok na antok ka na, ‘yung pag-splash mo magigising ka uli pero okay lang basta you’ll have to remove everything, remove all of them.
Mr. Right must be… Very understanding; especially with my schedule. Very supportive, and very loving. That’s it. Three things I’m looking for a guy.
What was your unforgettable experience from the pageant? Eating. (laughs) I was the pinakamatakaw in the entire pageant. (laughs) Yah! Seriously! Kala ninyo hindi? Kasi lahat nagtatanong ng “Karen, do you even eat?”. And I say, yes a lot. I eat a lot. What’s wrong? I guess it’s my metabolism. My metabolism is really fast. As in siguro, ganito, catered usually ‘yung food eh. Lahat sila, half lang ng plate nila pero ako, magtu-two rounds pa ko nun. O di ba? (Laughs) Lalong-lalo na kung gusto ko yung ulam kasi may particular ako na ulam na gustung-gusto kong kumain.
What is your favorite dish? Usually I eat a lot of meat. Actually… (pauses to think) kahit ano eh. Pero I don’t eat vegetables that much. I’m a very carnivorous person.
What did you think gave you an edge during the pageant? I don’t know. May be my poise and my gown? 'Cause the designer was really good. Ramon Esteban is my designer and he’s really good. He plays with the colors very well. The theme was a tropical splendor; its green and blue. He combined it.
How do you feel now that you’re a beauty queen? Naninibago nga ako eh. Dati hindi naman ako pinapansin dito eh, tapos ngayon, “Karen pa-picture, Karen pa-autograpgh”. Kahit nga sa street namin, when we arrived around 2 a.m. na ha. Nung dumating kami, everyone was like waving their hands to our car tapos nang bumaba ako, lahat sila may mga camera na. Sabi ko naman, okay. Alam mo I don’t want to think that I’m different. I’m still Karen. It’s just with the crowd, yes, but I want to keep the simplicity. Ayokong magbago. Medyo naninibago ako with the people around me. Kasi naman dati no one was looking at me pero maybe in time I’ll get used to it.
What can you advice your fellow students who want to achieve as much as you’ve achieved now? You have to be confident. You have to bring out the confidence in you. If you have a dream, like me, I wanted to be somebody before. I wanted to be a great model but instead I become a beauty queen. They’re different but in the same line. I can even make it as a stepping stone for my dream. In that dream, you have to go with it. Give all that effort to pursue that, never let go of those dreams and keep the confidence. Never loose that confidence. Think of God. That’s all.
Karen's winning answer during the Bb. Pilipinas 2002 Final Q&A...
“To a woman, having a beauty title is very important. First of all, you’re in a position of great influence. In that, you can be a role model to everyone-- you can be a role model of independence and confidence to all women in the world.”

BRITISH TELEVISION JOINS MISS WORLD BOYCOTT
By Hugh Dougherty, Ben Leapman and Jessica Hodgson, Evening Standard, 6 November 2002
British broadcasters are to snub the Miss World contest as calls grow for a complete boycott of the event.
For the first time in more than a decade the beauty pageant will not appear on British TV channels - a major blow to the Nigerian hosts, who had hoped it would transform their country's international image and attract tourists and investors. The Evening Standard revealed the boycott yesterday over the death sentence imposed for adultery on Amina Lawal by a Muslim court. After she has weaned her daughter, Wasila, the illiterate unmarried mother will be stoned to death.
Nigeria's Christian president Olusegun Obasanjo has said federal law will overturn the sentence, but is yet to invoke his power of pardon. Another two countries said they would not attend and MPs from all parties put pressure on Britain's four representatives to stay away.
In Britain, ITV2, which televised Miss World last year, has decided not to bid for rights, along with Sky and Channel 5, which have shown it in the past. A senior television source said: "Many companies would not want to get involved in an event which could be a political liability."
Miss World is not aired in Spain, and will not be aired in Panama and Austria, whose representatives are boycotting it along with competitors from Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa and Costa Rica. Misses England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all refused to join the protest. Julia Morley, director of Miss World and widow of founder Eric Morley, said: "The president has said federal law will not let it happen. We are still going to demonstrate our disgust at the fact that they can consider this execution. It is much more effective than staying away because we are not turning our back on Nigeria."

-After this, the 5 finalists will be announced.
-The final Q&A follows.

Her bags are packed and she’s ready to go! Only the finishing touches stand between Fa Femina Miss India-World 2002 Shruti Sharma and her flight tonight to London, from where she will head for Nigeria to participate in the Miss World Contest.
"There´s just last-minute shopping to be done after which I will be ready to take on the world!" gushes Shruti, "I am very excited about participating in the Miss World pageant." Shruti´s first stop will be London, where she "will spend a couple of days attending meetings with Miss World Inc president Julia Morley." From London, where Shruti will have other Miss World contestants for company, the buoyant beauty will head for Nigeria.
Back to the bags. Shruti´s luggage is packed with an array of clothes which she will sport during her month-long stay in Nigeria. "Since the finals of the contest are on December 7, I will need all the clothes I am carrying," she explains, "While my traditional costumes have been designed by Ritu Kumar, the Western-wear, including bikinis, has been designed by Ashley Ribello. With day-wear, evening-wear, swim-wear, sleep-wear... packing was a Herculean task!"
Beyond designer creations, tucked away in Shruti´s bags is something which she considers close to her heart. "It´s jewellery presented to me by my mother," she reveals, "The jewellery is so beautiful that I will flaunt it wherever I go in Nigeria!"
There is a humorous side to this girl alright but, deep down, a steely resolve to succeed defines Shruti Sharma. And she has left no stone unturned in her preparations. "While Sabira Merchant has helped me with my diction, I have brushed up my general knowledge, followed a strict diet and worked out really hard to be in shape for the pageant."
In short, Shruti is ready to take on the world! But then, determination is second nature to her. And it is this determination which saw her being crowned Fa Femina Miss India-World.
"Winning the title was a dream come true," says Shruti, "Since then, life has become so hectic!"
Shruti´s assignments have seen her shift base from Delhi to Mumbai. From modelling for designers to featuring in ad campaigns, she´s done it all. Bollywood calling? "I have received my share of offers, but my priority has always been to devote all my attention to the Miss World Contest." That, of course, is the dedication which sees dreams such as winning the Miss World title come true.

Faye Alibocus Miss Trinidad & Tobago 2003's recent pic.

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/2002-11-10/expresswoman/cover.jpg
This Is Faye
Faye Alibocus is driving through the streets of San Fernando with her boyfriend, eating a pack of almonds. Suddenly, she laughs out loud and tells us how the Miss Trinidad and Tobago/Universe crew always reacted with scepticism to her food, especially on the occasion when she offered them beetroot cake and they almost passed out.
While she’s talking, I notice several school children at the side of the road pointing and staring at the car. I read their lips as they mouth to each other. “That’s the girl who won Miss T&T”.
But, Alibocus is oblivious to all the attention she is attracting. Instead, she notices a woman and a child standing at the side of a busy intersection trying to get to the other side. She instructs her boyfriend to stop and allow them to cross.
And it is these two events that finally give me an insight into the real Faye Alibocus.
With Alibocus, the outside is so striking that one can’t help but judge her by it. She is good-looking, slim, with jet-black hair and flawless skin. But these could be used to describe almost all of the other 12 delegates she competed against to win the coveted title of Miss Trinidad and Tobago/ Universe.
At age 23, Alibocus appears to be very much aware of herself and what she wants from life. A self-employed aesthetician, she shares her dream of owning a spa in the next ten years, the focus of which will not just be on physical well-being, but spiritual and mental as well.
Very early in the interview I realise she takes herself very seriously. And she has to.
Many aspects of her life are in the public and are dependent on a positive image.
As a professional singer who has travelled throughout the world performing, Alibocus’ image is her ticket, but, more importantly, her knowledge of her sense of self is her survival—it is after all a business that can throw roses at your feet one night and tear you to pieces the next.
I ask her to describe who she is. She replies matter-of-factly: “I am a simple person, not fussy. I’m loving, charismatic and very disciplined. I love to challenge myself. That is why I entered the pageant.”
On the lawn of her home, there is a statue of the Virgin Mary with a garland of blush roses around her feet.
The verandah has a painting of Jesus Christ with the arms outstretched and in the drawing room, a replica of Buddha. But Alibocus does not consider this eclectic. Her take on religion is straightforward. “I am Roman Catholic but I go to any church. I go to temple, to mosques, Pentecostal, Baptist churches. I believe all religions have the same basis; they are based on peace, love and unity. They have the same basic message and getting that message is what my soul yearns for.”
Alibocus’ spiritualilty was quite apparent when she answered the final question on the night of the pageant. She was asked how she would know when she was in love. Alibocus answered that it was the spiritual connection between two people which would let her know.
That answer, among other factors, helped to earn her the crown.
After Miss Trinidad and Tobago/Universe 2002 Nasma Mohammed crowned Alibocus, she was seen mouthing: “Thank you, God.”
When asked about the view that some members of the public believed that the crown should have gone to another delegate—Leah-Mari Guevara or Joy Daniel, for instance—and had expressed the view that she had known beforehand what the outcome of the competition would have been, and that she would have been the eventual winner, Alibocus’ response is quick, pragmatic: “I take everything with love. I understand that not everyone will love me.
“I know how hard the delegates worked. If it was up to me I would have given each of them a crown. Everybody has their favourite, and everyone has their opinion.”
But, she stresses, she could not have told the judges whom to vote for. What the facilitators advised them to do she followed and if the judges were looking for certain things and found them in her, well, then, that means she deserved to win.
In the months leading up to the show, Alibocus says she concentrated on being the best she could have been. “I was Faye. I wasn’t trying to be anybody I wasn’t.”
With regard to the depth of media coverage she received before the show, she again stresses that everyone has opinions and the rights to those opinions.
She says she had heard that talk before and recalls a conversation she had with another delegate who told her that everyone was saying that the show was rigged. But, she points out, “I had no control over my photos appearing in the newspapers. In the case of the Kerrygold ad, I’m featured a lot because I won the Miss Kerrygold Physique, but people didn’t know that so they saw the ad and thought ‘Oh, look at how much they focus on her’.” Adamant, that the pageant wasn’t rigged. She says, “Anybody could have gotten it. We all had the chance.”
Alibocus has a couple weeks off before her grueling schedule resumes, then it’s back to the training and preparations for the Miss Universe Pageant in May 2003. She hopes she will smooth out what are her perceived “weak spots” before she heads off to Panama, the location for Miss Universe 2003.
As difficult as the last seven months were, Alibocus says she knows they are insignificant when compared to what’s ahead, but she’s determined to represent not only herself and her family, but, most of all, her country to the best of her ability.
She was full of praise for the members of the Pageant Committee—Maureen Bowen, who functioned as psychologist to the 12 delegates and whom she described as “a pillar of support” for everyone; Alyson Brown, Adrian Raymond, Dr Jean Campbell, Peter Elias, Trevor James, Arlene Karim—and her designers Zadd and Eastman.

Miss Universe Returns to Homeland to Talk with Teens
Every Miss Universe® has the opportunity to travel the world to speak on behalf of her official cause. Lara Dutta, Miss Universe 2000, has become a champion for HIV/AIDS prevention. Born and raised in India, Lara has witnessed HIV/AIDS claim lives and become one of India's leading causes of death. As Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and official spokesperson for the Face to Face Campaign for Women, Lara has expanded the focus of her cause to the overall empowerment of women and girls, promoting family planning and access to quality reproductive and sexual health care and education.
There are many programs in India dedicated to improving the lives and health of women and children, but few programs specifically focus on adolescents, a group that India is even reluctant to identify. It is often taboo for adolescents to talk openly with adults about sex and other sensitive topics, like reproductive health care (including birth control and STD prevention), literacy, and employment opportunities. Lara believes this culture of silence surrounding sex must be broken to build a healthy bridge between childhood and adulthood.
On a recent visit to her native country, she visited several adolescent assistance programs in and around Mumbai and Calcutta to learn more about innovative projects and raise public and political awareness of the unmet needs of India's adolescents - a group that constitutes 20 percent of India's population of one billion.
One of the programs she visited on the trip was called NISHTHA, which means "dedication" in Hindi. NISHTHA has fostered and supported adolescent health programs for more than 15 years, and is supported in this work by Planned Parenthood® Federation of America, and their international services program, FPIA. NISHTHA is improving the lives and environment of young people by building roads, starting community schools, and opening the lines of communication between young people and their elders. Recognizing the potency of a more holistic approach, NISHTHA has recently linked family planning and reproductive health services with broader community development goals, using the same social-network-oriented strategy. With PPFA/FPIA support, NISHTHA has expanded to provide reproductive health services and sexuality education to young women and to enhance reproductive rights as an integral component of individual and community development. The program is based on the theory that social networks affect contraceptive use by spreading information and influencing attitudes and behavior.
"The future of these villages depends on the ability of our young people to make these decisions about their families," says Mina Das, secretary of NISHTHA. "They face so many obstacles, yet they seek inspiration and cling to hope that their lives will be different."
Lara tells in her own words her experience meeting the young women who are involved in NISHTHA projects.
"Nine hundred adolescent girls and boys are singing these powerful words. They would have never allowed such words 10 years ago. Today, NISHTHA condensed 25 years of work into one day and gave us a great program.
Lyrics:
Oh, kishories break the door of old
Bondage, come out in the open
Break those laws of oppression
Which hinders our being human
Being. Don't be afraid if the
Society comes on the verge of
Destruction. Even then we won't
Stop. Life will bequeath Death.
Thousands of years we were in a coma.
Let us now die to live.
Let us work, oh sister, let us
Work. Let no fence stop us, we will
Break it, go round the work
In the way we are. It does not
Matter whether we win or loose
We cannot let it go.
Fear must not overcome us and
We build our house with our strength.
We went to a traditional welcome ceremony held by strong women united (Mahila Makis). They've had no right to say "no" and now they have completely changed a tradition. I am so honored to have been a part of this new, empowering tradition. Twenty years ago the whole idea of a women's group was so profound, and now they are cornerstones of their communities who provide services, e.g., the building of roads and redefining ceremonies.
I was very happy to see the number of men who came - and spoke up - to support the women and adolescents. Now that's measurable change - when men will stand in the shadow and allow a women's / girl's group the center stage.
There are very few resources in this community. And with next to nothing, they've created something. Everything you see and hear is the result of a community mobilizing to create new ways of education. The women teach the adolescents; the adolescents teach the girls. Everyone in the community gives what they can. (We saw 10 year olds teaching 3 year olds using handmade teaching tools). There are no "formal" teachers, there are few books. They have "nothing," but they use whatever they can find to move ahead. This is THEIRS.
I have tremendous respect and admiration for the mahila mandal (women's groups), the kishori bahini (adolescents) and their visionary leader Minas Das. They have overcome so many adversities. They are not asking for recognition from me or the media, just for equality. How can this be denied?"
Her trip to India culminated in an open forum webcast, sponsored by UNFPA and the Times of India. During the webcast, Lara exchanged views about education, growing up, health care and many other issues with adolescents in India. Click here to learn more about Lara's mission and trip to India. Learn how she's working to break the tradition of silence in her homeland and opening communications to provide a healthy springboard for adolescents growing into adulthood.

In an unprecedented event, Lara was permitted to perform an ancient Hindu ritual called Briksha Ropan, whereby a coconut seedling is planted by hand. Up until this day, no one other than Hindu priests had been allowed to perform this sacred ceremony, which represents the germination of new life.
http://www.familyplanet.org/images/featurepics/NISTHA.jpg
Lara visited the NISHTHA project - Improving the Reproductive Health of Young Women and Men. Here Lara talked with young women from the Kishori Bahini, an adolescent girls' brigade, and leaders of the local Mahila Mandal, a women's development group.
http://www.familyplanet.org/images/featurepics/lara_boysgirls.jpg
Lara comments on the difficulties of being an adolescent, and how to take control of your life: "You have a right to know your own body, to control your own lives. This is tremendously important. But you must get an education. Know what you want to do with your life. Knowledge is the key - knowledge of rights and responsibilities. Once you have this foundation, nothing should stop you from achieving your goals."
"Poorly educated teenagers usually grow up to be poorly educated adults."

Cameras have followed every move of the pageant's three casting judges. And for the first time, the public will get to see the judging and selection process.
The regional castings took place over ten days at the beginning of October. Ex-Miss SA Jacqui Mofokeng, model and GoodHope FM newsreader, Genevieve Howard and award-winning SA fashion designer, Simon Rademan whittled down thousands of entrants to 30 semi-finalists. A second round of judging then took place in Sun City, which led to a further reduction to just 12 finalists.
Catch first-hand the catfights between the strong-willed casting judges as they exercise their authority in deciding who makes the grade and who doesn't. Witness the drama and disappointment as one of the hopefuls gets axed after getting into the Top 30.
Over the next three Sunday's, Fox will take the viewer into the bedrooms, bathrooms, closets and boyfriends' arms as she finds out who the top 12 really are.
The final two-hour broadcast will air on December 8 at 17:00.
Tickets to the final show will be available from Computicket from November 8. Prices start at R100.

It seems Miss Namibia is one of the tallest girls among the Nubian queens. As early as now I can see she is very elegant, what more when she competes in Panama? I'll be looking out for her.

:wow:
The Miss World pictures are nice!!! I especially love Misses Kazakhstan and Colombia. Miss USA does not impress me at all!! I have yet to see photos of Misses England and Wales, whose pre-pageant pics are amazing!
It's so sad to think that Misses Spain and South Africa, both stunning ladies, will not see action in Miss World. Lola could have been a very good bet for the finals.
Have you guys read the GB interview on Sylvie Tellier. I had a good time reading it. Especially the ones where she was saying something about the other contestants.

I found a nice article on Miss England 2002 Daniella Luan... Read on...
Today Miss England, tomorrow Miss World?
Daniella Luan, Miss England
http://www.bbc.co.uk/oxford/features/2002/11/images/missengland_270.jpg http://www.bbc.co.uk/oxford/features/2002/11/images/missengland1_150.jpg http://www.bbc.co.uk/oxford/features/2002/11/images/missengland2_175.jpg
Oxford Brookes University student, Daniella Luan is ready to take on the world, literally. She is preparing to compete in the Miss World competition judged in Abuja, Nigeria on December 7.
A down-to-earth and bubbly young woman from Oxford, Daniella Luan is now under the eye of the international press as she takes the decision to be included in the Miss World competition in December.
We do not believe in boycotts as a means of supporting the development of human rights and in particular, we feel that boycotting Nigeria is unjust and counter-productive.
Letter issued to Miss World candidates from seven English MEPs
Daniella's head is still spinning after winning the national title.
If she goes on to win the Miss World title, she will win a further £80,000 as well as a number of modelling contracts.
Meanwhile, the host country, Nigeria, is plagued by human rights issues. A Nigerian woman, Amani Lawal, has been sentenced to be stoned under Sharia law for having a baby outside of marriage.
According to Sharia law, the sentence is due to be carried out after her daughter is weaned.
Sharia law in Nigeria is being enforced in the northern states. Here, women are "facing barbaric forms of injustice", according to Natasha Walter of The Times.
President Olusegun Obasanjo who is a Christian, has announced that he is not in favour of the sentence handed down on Amina Lawal.
A charity, "Hands Off Cain" recently sent a delegation to meet Amani Lawal to ask her what she thought the Miss World Contestants should do - boycott the competition or attend.
"Let them come", Amina said through an interpreter. "I know things will work out because people are coming from all over the world to see me."
In response to her remarks, seven MEPs from England issued letters to the Miss World candidates, encouraging them to participate.
Originally the contestants from Denmark, Switzerland, Austria and Costa Rica expressed their wishes to pull out. Now, however, it is claimed that only Miss Denmark is wavering from competing in December.
Amid the human rights issues, Daniella Luan has decided to continue participating in the Miss World Competition. Daniella said: "If Amina feels we should go to support her, then I am very pleased."
Her close-knit family, including three sisters and two brothers are entirely supportive of her decision and will watch the final on television.
"They're very proud. We used to sit down together and watch Miss World and have bets on who would win. I could never have imagined that I would be a part of it one day."
Daniella leaves on Saturday November 9 for Nigeria for her month-long trip.
