The northern African nation of Algeria is sending a delegate to Miss Universe 2003. It will be its first time ever to compete in this pageant. :)

Miss Algerie 2003 will be crowned on October 24, Thursday in Algiers.

The winner will also compete in the Face of Africa and Best Model of the World contests.

Natalia Figueras Cabeza was crowned Miss Uruguay Mundo 2002 last Thursday in Montevideo.

She will compete in Nigeria on December 7th. :D

:wave: Wasn't able to finish Miss Earth last night because it's freaking late already...golly, 930 pm turned to 1030 pm and the show kept on going on and on on the performances and won't announce the top 10 till perhaps the end of the show?!? So...I was not able to catch up on how they perform actually....but my original bet to win based on the pictures that I saw pre-pageant, Ms. Bosnia, won! :bounce: So that makes me happy already...Im kinda doing well with the choosing of winners in the pageant......:wink: :lol:

Btw, the Ms. Earth crown looks nice....better than the previous one...Im glad that the producers have been quite open to suggestions and criticisms and I really hope that they will continue to improve in the succeeding years...who knows? they might surpass MI in terms of prestige...hahahaha...I won't bet on surpassing MU or MW...too wishfull thinking na yun! :belat:

Jensie: Ive been to Folk Arts and as far as I remember, it's a closed theatre and it sure is freakingly hot like hell...I was not able to stay long for the concert that I attended there because it is pure suffering and I vowed not to go there again kahit free pa *** ticket na pamimigay dahil super duper to the max ang init dun...parang nasa oven...and take note, *** concert was around january or february pa so hindi pa summer months un ah! :verymad:

Katerina Smrzova was 1st runner-up during the Miss Cesky Republicky 2002 pageant last March. She will represent the Czech Republic in Miss Universe 2003 set for May next year in Panama.

The last time the Czech Republic made it in Miss Universe was in 1993, when Pavlina Baburkova made it to the Top 10 in Mexico City, Mexico. Unfortunately, she settled for 8th place overall.

I just got home from an ouyt of town vacation. Still in holiday mode. The place we stayed did not have channel 2. Of all channels, 2 lang wala. So I wasn't able to watch Miss Earth. Definitely no big loss. But from the way Jensie told me how it went and reading Archerguy's posts, it seems it was a HUGE joke again. Honestly since back then pa, I never liked how Carousel productions run their pageants, yeah the store to store tapings showing their girls with sponsors is sooo pase already. A waste of airtime, a waste of everything. And what I've heard, they've copied a lot of things from Miss Universe. Especially the Parade of Nations now divided by regions (it's so obvious). Oh well, "imitation is the best form of flattery." Regarding Miss Kenya, she should start dreaming of achieving greater heights like joining Miss Universe Kenya. She would definitely get more exposure there. And nabalitaan ko Reshmi has "thunder thighs" as well. Bigger than Neha. Well, let's wait for Shruti,. kung malaki din pata niya, bingo na ang Femina. Ala na kong believe sa kanila.

Medha, who had come in with high expectations, is traumatized. She is consolsed by her boyfriend.

British Channel ITV sent a crew to India last December and January to follow the Femina Miss India Pageant to find out what really goes on behind the scenes.

Unlike specials like "E! Behind the Scenes" or "BBC Beauty and the East," this pageant special digs much further. Most pageant documentaries simply would give an overview of the girls' preparation, the competition, and "the winners are really happy, the losers are really sad!" conclusion at the end with some feminist schpeel in-between. "******* and Beauty Queens" does not do that - it goes deep inside to find out what the girls are REALLY like, what REALLY goes down in competition, and what REALLY occurs in the psyche of a contestant.

I guess the producers of the special picked out certain girls to focus on because of their personality. The big star is MEDHA, a South Indian tv personality and very experienced beauty titleholder who is extremely honest. Her best friend and roommate in the contest is SONAL, a music video star and model who has serious issues with self-confidence. NEHA is featured prominently as Medha's antithesis and a true competitor.

Medha begins by giving her the title of "Femina Miss India's Biggest *****." She insults a few contestants from the start, like Jasremen, who she describes as having "droopy everything," and Gauhar, who she describes as a religious fanatic. She describes Sonal as her best friend at the pageant, and then focus shifts to Sonal. Despite having tremendous modelling experience, Sonal has serious issues with self-confidence and assertion. She constantly seems worried or neurotic about something or the other.

Focus moves on to preparation. Little bits are given by each part of the team as the girls are "groomed." Not much is to be said here, except that Sonal's beauty is affected by some serious problems in confidence and eloquence. She can not answer questions for her life, and simply lacks a spark. There is a lot of yelling from the instructors for the girls to get themselves straightened out.




"Gauhar is...'I'm too good for this crowd,'...'What am I doing here?'...'Allah will take care of me'...'Allah is everything'...she's a f***ing religious fanatic!" - Medha
A brief glimpse on Gauhar praying in her room, with traditional burqa and all, and asserting her faith in Allah. Meanwhile, Medha mocks her more as "religious fanatic" and obnoxious. Then we move on to a free night for the girls to go loose and have fun...Medha, Sonal, Grisha and some others go drinking. Grisha can not keep her mouth shut on camera about men and sex...she lets certain things slip out, and Medha attempts to shut her up. Boyfriends are an issue with Sonal and Medha, because they cause a lot of strife to the girls during their stay there.

NEHA steps into the picture, when Medha mentions a girl who does not mingle with the others. Neha simply states that she is not in it to have a good time, but to succeed. While the others are sound asleep, she is awake to work out. She does not drink or smoke or partake in other such habits, she claims. Later on in the show, Medha and Sonal both get upset that Neha is the most prominent one in rehearsals and in the fashion show sequences, something which they attribute to favoritism, even though they both admit that she will be one of the three winners. Neha, in a non-arrogant manner, asserts her self-confidence and belief that she will succeed in whatever she takes on, and that she has always been able to do so for everything in her life. I guess she was not around to win Miss Personality!

Back at preparation camp: Interview rehearsals go on as the show draws closer. The girls seem to be able to grasp the onstage questions, but when Medha is asked a question about the love of her life being a criminal, she starts a response and ends dead in her tracks. Sonal has the same problem, which upsets Sabira Merchant at this point in the training. Obviously, interview will be a major problem for those two!

Glances at the private pre-judging are flashed, including glimpses at the judges' expressions and scoresheets! Neha walks the ramp smoothly and readily. She is then shown in another portion of the judging, where she sits in front of the judges up-close and sits still. Smiles are seen on the judges' faces as she manages to hold a perfect pose. Meanwhile, Sonal does fine onstage, but up-close her nerves lose the battle and ruin the moment, causing the judges to burst out in laughter. Then comes Medha...what is interesting now is that while watching her on the ramp, a couple of the judges are seen with frowns on their faces and shaking their heads left to right. They don't seem to like Medha much.

The girls are then shown meeting up in the bathroom to discuss the brutality of the questions. Most of them are visibly frantic over their performance, especially Sonal, who is at nerves' end but feels she did well. Medha seems to have absolutely no issues with her interview. However, later at night the girls are worried about the final outcome of the contest which they have invested so much into, and how they will go back to life if they are not a winner. for Neha, Medha, Sarabjot, and so forth, this seems like an issue of life or death.

One of the world's biggest beauty extravaganzas is just about ready to go on tv. The stage is ready and the girls make final preparations backstage with wardrobe, hair and make-up. At this point, the special finely goes over some highlights of the contest: The top 13 are announced, and Sonal and Medha are both there with Neha. Medha and Sonal open up the second fashion show of the night, but the twosome are not among the final nine. Medha is nowhere to be found. Others still have to do the final fashion show, but backstage the smiles turn into tears. It has been a process of months, sometimes even years, for many of these girls, and normal life is going to be tough. Backstage, contestants watching the show on tv set's are not too pleased with Neha's answers or her flow from round to round.

Neha shows poise under pressure, and as she is named the winner, am embittered Sonal and angry Navneet change their expressions from happy to absolutely furious in a split second. Neha and the other winners are overjoyed. The rest pack up and move on with their lives.

Final scenes of the show indicate that Sonal understands her inexperience caused her downfall, and she seems to be handling the loss well, going back to her modelling career. Meanwhile, the pageant seems to have psychologically scarred Medha permanently. One only wonders how she will deal with it. In the meantime, the special ends with Sonal/Medha and their boyfriends enjoying the disco scene and getting liquored up - cheers!

I admire Neha's confidence (being in a non arrogant sort of way) but it seems it just ended up in Femina. If she was really THAT confident in San Juan, she should have made ways to prevent her having those shocking thunder thighs.

It's very odd that Venezuela also produced 5 Miss World winners (in Miss Universe only 4) but you hardly hear any news about them. Even the Miss Venezuelas who did not win Miss U get more exposure, I don't want to start with their 4 Miss Universes, you hear about them all the time.

It will take place at the Auditorio Getsemani Centro de Convenciones in Cartagena.

The search is on for Miss Rio Grande do Sul 2003!

Since August, applications for the state pageant has begun. Ladies aged between 18-25 years are eligible to join.

50 municipalities are competing for the state crown next month.

The winner will represent Rio Grande do Sul in Miss Brasil 2003 set for April next year.

***Joseane Oliveira was the 8th Miss Rio Grande do Sul to win the coveted Miss Brasil crown. The state has won 8 times. It is the winningest state in the national pageant. :)

Puertorriqueño designer Luis Antonio was responsible for the green number that will be worn by Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico 2002 Cassandra Polo in Nigeria... He was the same guy who did the see-through blue-green gown of Isis Casalduc during Miss Universe 2002. :D

I would obviously and automatically prefer Isis' gown to that of Cassandra anytime... :rolleyes:

Diane Ngo Mouaha was 1st runner-up during the Miss Cameroon 2002 pageant last August 11 in Douala.

However due to an unexpected twist of fate, the original winner -- Agathe Pascaline Nomgne -- was stripped off her title on September 6 due to "dishonesty". Diane has taken over ever since.

Diane now faces the tremendous task of representing her country in Miss World 2002 and Miss Universe 2003.

Diane is 20 years old and stands 5 feet 11 inches.

I just don't get what's the real score about Guadeloupe and Martinique. With the calibre of their girls, they can make it on their own in Miss Universe or in any pageant. Now is the time to seek power(bubbles)'s help. Is the relationship of these two islands to France the same as Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire's relationship to the Netherlands? If so, why can the Dutch colonies send independent delegates, while their French counterparts cannot? Yeah the French's (wherenever part of the globe they're influence is) fashion sense never disappoints you, well except for Mauritius- hehehe sumablay sila. hehehe

Nice gowns for Miss Venezuela? These wedding gowns were made by Miss Venezuelan designer Angel Sanchez. Since white is always the "color of war" of every Miss Venzuela in Miss Universe these simple but elegant gowns can easily wow the crowd. But I doubt Osmel would let Mariangel wear a "ready to wear" gown. Always custom made ang gown niya. But these gowns are much better than Cynthia's over exposed evening gown.

Racism in the Philippines & Miss Earth
There is a very interesting article on the International Pageant Winner message board - www.voy.com/77664/. The title is "The Beauty Within: Reflections on Miss Earth 2002" and the author is Heart and Soul.

I have copied two paragraphs from that show just what the African delegates have been going through while in the Philippines. It is really sad.

"Miss Uganda was one of the last to arrive in the country. She had more enthusiasm than the others as it was her birthday, beaming with a smile and a laughter heard above the heads of the other candidates. In typical lazy form, I whipped out the questionnaire and asked her to write what I expected to be a rhetoric answer. As we passed by the swarm of people at Pier 12, I noticed the most unbelievable thing. As Ms. Uganda reached to touch the hand of a child, the mother made a small screech and pulled away the hand as the father put his hand to keep away the mother and child from harm. Then I had my awakening. I saw, as the participants from the African continent passed, hands would go drop down and loose their buoyancy. Faces would contract slightly and bodies would push back half-step into the crowd. and the color that so lit Ms. Uganda’s face at the start lost its fire."

"Before we moved up to the upper deck, each of us was given a garland. As Miss Kenya reached the top step, the attendant who was holding the pretty sampaguita leis betrayed her ugly self by not putting one around the dark skinned participant’s neck. Without hesitation, Miss Kenya took the strand of flowers from the girl herself and put it around her neck. She is beautiful in her country and no one, not even this Cebuana girl, can make her think she isn’t."

The African girls showed true class - much more than their Filipino hosts. It must have hurt but they put on a brave front and decided to enjoy themselves anyway. When you are black, you learn to expect snubs and bigotry but it must have hurt to be a beauty queen representing your country and be treated this way. It is hard for any white person to know what it would feel like to have people recoil in horror and move their children because your skin is black. This is the worst kind of stupidity. I now believe Miss Kenya's placement in the top 5 was just to quiet the accusations of racism among the judges.

I don't want to condemn the whole Filipino race. I am sure there are a few who are fairminded and free of bigotry. There were a few posts on the Mabuhay board who actually said they wanted Miss Kenya to win. I'm not sure if they were all Filipinos but some were. Usually when someone sees a few acts of racism, you can bet there are many more that went unseen and unreported. I would love to be a fly on the wall when the African delegates go home and tell about their experiences in the Philippines.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "No one can make you feel inferior unless you give them permission." All the African delegates know, in their hearts and minds, they are equally as beautiful as anyone with white or yellow skin. That is why they carried themselves proudly and always had a smile for everyone. Even if the judges let Miss Kenya in as a token she was so dynamic on that stage that she almost won the crown. She could not be ignored.

In times like these I remember Miss India 1995 Manpreet Brar's quote during Miss Universe 1995, "When you're back is bent, only then could someobdy climb on it. So stand up straight and no one could climb up your back."

Medyo wala pa ata si power(bubbles), so I'll "answer" na lang Lara_D's question re: the deal with Martinique and Guadeloupe:

Aruba is still part of the Netherlands; they obtained full autonomy in internal affairs in 1986 upon separation from the Netherlands Antilles; Dutch Government is responsible for defense and foreign affairs.

Bonaire and Curacao comprise, along with Sint Maarten (the island of Saint Martin is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint-Martin and is part of Guadeloupe, and its southern portion is named Sint Maarten and is part of the Netherlands Antilles) Netherlands Antilles. Netherlands Antilles is also part of the Netherlands; full autonomy in internal affairs was granted in 1954; Dutch Government is also responsible for defense and foreign affairs.

Guadelope and Martinique, along with French Guiana are "overeas departments". They ecame departments in 1946 and are, for the most part, subject to the same legislation as metropolitan France. On the other hand, there are three Overseas Territories (Territoires d´Outre-Mer , or TOMs), these being French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, and the French Southern and Antarctic Territories. In them, metropolitan France only exerts the power of sovereignty (defence, foreign relations, justice and currency). Local affairs are managed by an Assembly elected by universal suffrage.

Which I guess, explains why the French overseas departments aren't really represented on their own in the international arena (including beauty pageants) unlike the Dutch regions you mentioned. The Dutch territories have been granted domestic autonomy unlike the French overseas territories which haven't been granted much. Even their local affairs are still administered by France, I think, unlike Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles, which have autonomy over local affairs.

Toppenberg was the original bet for Abuja. Pero I dunno why

Last year, Zizi Lee was only 3rd runner-up. Due to mysterious
circumstance, the 1st runner-up gave up the chance to
compete in Sun City. Hence, Zizi was sent instead.

She's set to leave on the 2nd week of November.

As of now, I don't have any updates or info as to who is training her. I also can't confirm if she'll be wearing an Alfredo Barraza or Bob Mackie evening gown.

Disfigured beauty makes it to Miss SA


Car crash left Burgette von Blerk without a face, but surgery helped her bounce back

When Burgette von Blerk's face was disfigured in a horrific car accident less than two years ago she dreaded the thought of looking at herself in the mirror.

The attractive 24-year-old brunette, who had taken part in several beauty pageants, banished all thoughts of taking part in another contest.


But the advertising and marketing manager of a teen magazine from Morningside in Durban defied all the odds last weekend when she was chosen as a semifinalist for the prestigious Miss South Africa pageant.


Von Blerk, who underwent three facial reconstruction operations after the accident in December 1999, will join 29 other contestants from across the country at a resort in the North West tomorrow where 12 finalists will be selected to take part in the pageant on December 8.


Almost every bone in her face, including her jaws and cheekbones, was crushed in the accident. Her palate was split in half and her nose was destroyed.


But a brave Von Blerk wowed the judges in Durban last Saturday when she was asked for her opinions on plastic surgery.


She also gave a moving account of how the accident in Old Main Road, Pinetown, turned her life around and how she had turned to plastic surgery and therapy in the hope of regaining her beauty.


Recounting the accident to the Sunday Times, Von Blerk said: "After I was placed second in 'Miss Friendship of the World' contest in Vietnam, I felt the sky was the limit.


"But [after the accident] I awoke to an entirely different chapter in my life.


"It felt like I was in a twilight zone. It could not be real. I had been in a car accident that left me without a face.


"The last thing I remember was that I had lain down in the back seat of the car to take a nap on my way home when we hit a tree."


During reconstructive surgery, cartilage was removed from her ribs to reconstruct her nose. A bone graft, titanium pins and plates were also used in the reconstruction process.


"There is something overwhelmingly humbling about getting a second chance to live your dream. I can't believe that I'm getting the opportunity to participate in the pageant.


"I love the challenge, the excitement and, most importantly, I love the opportunity to give something back to society," she said.


"Most days, I battle to comprehend that I am actually able to take part in the Miss South Africa contest. This is an opportunity that I thought had been shattered after the accident.


"The accident has transformed my outlook on life. I now embrace life and live each day to the fullest.


"When opportunities come my way, I grab hold of them with both hands and give it my all because I never know whether it may be my last shot at it."


She said she hoped she was a symbol of inspiration to others who felt like giving up without trying.


Yvonne van Kempen, events executive for Miss South Africa, said Von Blerk had impressed the judges with her charm and charisma.


"She has been through a traumatic time in her life and she had to undergo surgery to overcome the trauma. She has all the qualities we are looking for. She is definitely an example for young girls today," she said.


The reigning Miss South Africa, Vanessa Carreira, said Von Blerk's triumph over adversity was one of the greatest success stories.


"It is horrific to have once been a popular beauty queen and then one day to suddenly wake up and look in the mirror and not recognise yourself.


"It is commendable for her to have the confidence to participate this year," she said.


A former Miss SA, Kerishnie Naicker, who met Von Blerk at the Miss Hibiscus beauty pageant before her accident, said she was impressed by her.


"I am extremely happy to hear that she has made it this year. She has incredible spirit and vibrance. I admire her courage. She hasn't been deterred by the challenges placed in her path and that is most admirable," Naicker said.

So here's the thng: yes, Vanessa Carreira will not be going to Nigeria, but it really shouldn't be too much of a suprize. Shortly after Vanessa's crowning as Miss South Africa she was told that her title guaranteed her entrance ONLY to Miss Universe and not to Miss World. After her amazing experience in Puerto Rico, she approached Sun International asking whether she might go to Miss World too. They never said yes. They delayed and delayed and delayed. Finally Vanessa was told that she could not go to Miss World because the date had been rescheduled - to the very day before she is due to crown the new Miss South Africa. It is in Vanessa's contract that she HAS TO BE present to crown her successor.

And that's the REAL story . . .

Meanwhile, the 12 finalists for Miss South Africa 2003 have been chosen, but the names have not yet been released to the press. Interviews and regionals were held throughout South Africa and a group of 30 was chosen. These 30 then spent a week at the Lost City, under much scrutiny from the organizers. From this 30, 12 have been chosen to continue. At this stage only the organizers know who the final twelve are.

INSIDE SCOOP: A very reliable source tells me that LEE-ANNE LIEBENBURG is probarly the favourite for the Miss South Africa title this year. A zesty young model, Lee-Anne closely resembles the representative of Cyprus who did so well at Miss Universe earlier this year.

Others are claiming that it's essential that Miss South Africa 2003 be black. The last black woman to wear the crown was Peggy-Sue Khumalo from Johannesburg in 1996. There was an outcry from the ANC (ruling political party) Youth League last year when fair-skinned Vanessa was named the loveliest in the land.

Vanessa is considering wearing a peach / pink gown as she does her final walk as Miss South Africa 2002.

Pageants in Algeria and the bitter conflict of Organisations

An intersting post about Miss Algeria:

The first Miss Algeria started in 92, by an unknown organisation which quickly vanished due to the financial problems and the start of the civil war in 91. In 97, after the situation got somehow improved, Mr. Boualem El Djazairi, Algeria's no. 1 hairstylist and fashion designer (like Elie Saab of Lebanon), started his Miss Algeria contest, and all his panel of jury consisted of ministers and governmental officials- a smart way of getting official recognition for his pageant. The competition was sponsered by Peugeot, Coca Cola and Sheraton, but he never cared to send the winner to international competitions. In 2000, after the overall situation of the country got so much better, quite a no. of pageants exploded all over the country and people found the slightest reasons to make pageants, until we started to hear of Miss&Mister Spring, Miss&Mister Palm Beach, Miss & Mister Tall, Miss & Mister Short...etc. However, only one major pageant stood out of all and that was started by M. Abdelkader Cherradi, a British Algerian who only accepted Algerian models to compete and he sent them to modelling contests and suposedly to Miss Universe this year. In 2001, his winner won Golden Fortune Top Model International in Kiev and now she is a successful swimwear model in Sweden. This furated Mr. El Djazair, since the latter also named his competition Miss Algeria. Since then we have been hearing of scandals and fights between the two organizations and they sued each other this September. Mr. El-Djazairi told me it's either me or him, we cannot stand each other at all and the best wins the case. So when I saw that Lamia was competing in Miss World I automatically thought that Mr. El-Djazairi won the case, since he was the one who elected Lamia and he got the governments agreement to be the official organiser. But then I was surprised that Mr. Cherradi was also still organising his pageant to send the winner to Miss Universe, though no results were announced, which means he is either keeping a low profile about it to avoid being arrested OR he already got banned from organising the pageant! So we mightbe or maybe notrepresented in MU. Also both guys are sueing a 3rd organistation which was started this year, by the name of the Beauty Queen of Algeria, which is really another Miss Algeria pageant. Like in Europe, Miss World is the more popular pageant in Algeria and people never heard of Miss Universe. There are at least 5 websites being launched soon by different organisations so don't be surprised.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The North Carolina beauty queen who resigned after topless photos of her surfaced has been selected to represent the United States in the Miss World pageant.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my state and my country in Miss World - the most glamorous and prestigious pageant in the world," Rebekah Revels said in a prepared statement.

Revels, 24, won the Miss North Carolina title in June but resigned in July after the Miss America pageant received an e-mail indicating there were nude photos of her. Revels told pageant officials that the e-mail came from a former boyfriend, Tosh Welch.

Welch has turned the photos over to a judge.

Revels has sued Welch, accusing him of invasion of privacy, interference in her contracts and inflicting emotional distress.

After Revels resigned, she sought to reclaim her crown after the Miss North Carolina Organization had signed a contract with Misty Clymer, the first runner-up. Revels lost her court battle and was unable to compete in the Miss America pageant.

Her selection by the Miss World pageant will allow her to compete Dec. 7 in Nigeria against 119 women from around the world.

Revels will then appear throughout the United States in 2003 promoting the Miss World pageant, which has not been active in the country for several years.

The pageant plans to select a contestant to compete in the 2003 Miss World contest in China.

"We are delighted to have selected Rebekah as the first winner under our new franchise," says Jean Renard, managing director of Miss World Holdings Inc., which recently won the license in the United States for the Miss World pageant. "Rebekah demonstrated the kind of intelligence, poise and grace under fire that will make her an ideal representative to the Miss World event, given these troubled times."

The Miss World pageant has had some trouble of its own lately from both Muslim groups and beauty queens.

Muslim leaders, who represent half of Nigeria's 120 million people, have branded the pageant immoral. Contestants, on the other hand, are joining a growing boycott to protest a death-by-stoning sentence against Amina Lawal, 31.

An Islamic law, or shariah, court in northern Nigeria condemned Lawal for having sex outside marriage. A second woman, Fatima Usman, 32, who is eight months pregnant, also has been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery.
