I love pearls. I specially love south sea pearls. I have one SSP pendant from Jewelmer, and I want to add to my collection. I also have mikimoto pearls and even "greenhills" pearls. I have baby pearls as well as big ones, but I don't have SSP earrings yet. They're very nice specially for career women. My uncle said I should always wear pearls, it makes me look very distinguished. And I think pearls suit all women, it just depends on the color and the size.
Any idea how much South Sea Pearl earrings cost? The ones the size of marbles? I plan to save for that. Thanks :)

Last time I saw at Rafael, I think the ones I saw were smaller than the size of regular marbles. They cost around 250K.
I got a few pairs of SSP. But I got them from MIndanao. You know, bago nila dinadala sa Maynila. The thing is, kailangan mo talaga mag intay ng maganda and dapat suki ka with the jeweler para s/he will call you pag may magandang shipment. Ok pa kasi you get to choose first. I got a pair that cost only 20,000.00 pearls lang. Then, papaset mo nalang.

Thanks BadGirl...I think 250K is way too much for a pair of SSP earrings. I'm looking for a nice pair though, I think it would cost me less than 100K. I was even shocked when I went to Greenhilss and saw this Muslim woman selling SSps behind a counter. She said it was only 9,000 one piece, so for a pair it's 18K. I just don't know it it's real or not. All I know is if you brush the real pearl against your teeth, it would feel grainy and rough. I did it and it seemed real. Kaya lang I need to bring my mom who's an expert on jewelry when I buy my own set.
So do you still keep in touch with your suki from Mindanao? Is there still an honest-to-goodness pearl farm in Davao? I know there's a resort but i dunno if they still harvest pearls there.

SSP pearls are quite expensive but they're worth the moolah. Although my own collection of pearls mostly evolve around mikimotos and pearls of different colors and shapes (ie. siopao), I would love to own one myself. My mum has two pairs of SSP and same as bad girl, she got it from a Muslim too kasi it's cheaper. So advice ko is ... go find a Muslim pearl trader :glee: ... tapat naman sila eh.

I like a wearing pearls too…it brightens the face and makes the face very refreshing…looks simple yet elegant, not too flashy... :flower:
But somehow, I am not very familiar with the kinds of pearls…I just know there is a mikimoto,a south sea, a fresh water …and what else? I don't know how to classify them either...

i love pearls too...never really liked diamonds because they're too flashy for me. pearls are so versatile, even young girls can wear them. they can flatter any complexion beautifully, you just have to choose the right color for your skin tone.
i loved walking around the mikimoto store in ginza, tokyo...my parents bought my sister and i a very simple gold ring w/ a single pearl, one for each of us. there's a pearl cross necklace there that i would really like to go back for when i return to japan in september, but it'll eat up my allowance.... :mecry:

I love pearls. I think they're very dainty. I have only one set however, because my mom is very superstitious. She believes that it means tears for a woman (who is not married) who wears them. Oh well. :beam:

I have heard of this thing too...a friend told me not to wear pearls, especially on the wedding day.

I didn't wear pearls on my wedding day...I wore a pair of diamond earrings, but my gown had swarovski cystals and a scattering of seed pearls. My designer said those were not teardrop pearls so they're okay. Actually, I remember Charlene Gonzales' wedding gown was also adorned with seed pearls (aside from that feathery thingy). Honestly, I think you're depriving yourself too much if you don't wear pearls while you're not married. A lot of my non-married girl friends are really into pearls. The pearls are very very classy kasi eh. you can wear it with anything and it doesn't look cheap. You can actually spruce up a suit or even a simple polo shirt with a strand of pearl necklace with pearl earrings and it doesn't look so ratty anymore. The good thing is pearls are less expensive than diamonds.
Wittygurl, thanks, I hope I can ask for a quotation. I think either white or champagne colored SSP earrings are very nice. They really do brighten your face and they are so classy.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves pearls. Seems like a lot of girls like em too! Has anyone bought from the Greenhills Muslim traders? Are they good quality pearls? I bought some from them, but I really don't know the general feedback about these sellers.

Annielise: Actually, the pearl farm in Davao is just a resort. I don't know if it was a real pearl farm before it was converted into a resort though. It's my grandma who talks to the suki. Every time may bago, my grandma gets to pick first, she'd buy the good ones and I will get to pick first. Hihihihi... the favorite's priviledge. :beam:
I know enough to get me by on diamonds.. Diamonds are a lot easier to assess..but pearls are a different matter altogether... I rely on my grandma to pick out what's real and what's not. So no, I haven't tried buying from the GH stalls. If they are indeed real SSPs, I doubt they'd go for such low prices here in Manila..kahit na tiangge na yan.
TheDreamer: I didn't get my pearls from a Muslim jeweler.
Just beware, there are pearls out there that are of bad quality. Ang gagawin nila para mag mukhang maganda, they will peel the top layer/s of the bad looking pearl para lumabas yung inner layers kaya mas makintab BUT, magiging weak ang pearl mo. Kasi baga, kung ang skin e maraming layers, isang layer nalang natira.
Unless you can get someone who knows her pearls to go with you, it's better ata to stick to the jewelry shops..albeit expensive. The best bets are the older people.... I think it would take years for a person to know pearls from just a glance.

Always buy your jewelry at reputable jewelry stores/trusted jewelers...the SSP at Jewelmer stands out because of their high quality...kaya lang, its a bit pricey :D

annielise : I already asked my Mom. She told me that you'll get a good deal for less than 100k for marlbe sized south sea pearl alone. If you want the pearl already set, the price will depend on its specification. What I know, yung mga pearls namin are ordered from different countries pa.. We offer low price coz we manufacture jewelries and sell directly to people..
I agree with you, PEARLS really brighten your face and they are sooo classy..
Luckily, I don't need to look around for good pearls.. my Mom does that for me ;)

I went to Tahiti last May 02, and I bought loose pearls that I had made into earrings when I got back to L.A. A certificate is issued for each pearl that you purchase with the guarantee of the French Polynesian goverment that it has been inspected and authentic. I think I bought it for $200 each and it was a good size like a small marble and it's greenish/black. There are a couple of marks on the pearl but the jeweler in L.A. was able to hide it with the earring stud design. The jeweler told me that the pearl was of good quality (there is a rating system and it's an B) only flaw was a couple of marks on the pearl but otherwise a good buy. My whole pearl earrings cost $500 total, in contrast the jeweler was selling similar pearl sets for $1500 to $2000.
I love pearls and wear them often. When I went to Manila last year, I bought a good size white 'siopao' pearl in Greenhills. So are these Greenhills pearls real? I bought it from a Muslim seller and he offered and gave us some kind of certificate for it. After reading some posts, now I'm not sure.

I bought mine (South Sea) from a "suki" of my mom - a Muslim woman who has a nice store in Meycauayan Bulacan. She was nice enough to have me appraise her pearls and they're good quality pearls. I got an alajera to make earrings out of the loose pearls and they're very nice.
Uso pa ba ang South Sea pearls in Manila?
Can you really guarantee good quality pearls bought in Greenhills?

i went gaga over pearls last year, nagresearch pa nga ako
about the sizes, the kind, ect.... :)
anyway, nagpunta akong jewelmer sa megamall
& i saw this size 12 pearls (smaller than a marble), no setting.
"almost" blemish-free. $750. w/ certification.
syempre hindi ko binili hehehe.
yung pendant nila, i believe, costs around 10K.
sa pagkaka alam ko siopao pearls are cultured pearls.
hindi tulad ng SSP kaya nga hindi maka buo ng bilog
na shape talaga kase pinilit yung pearl.

my friend who used to sell pearls as sideline said that she would put a lighter under the SSP to show a client na genuine article ang pearls niya dahil hindi masusunog, i tried it on a small pearl ring of mine once, pero mabilis lang, di nga nagmark, pero uminit ang pearl...

Bea19: most probably those are cultured freshwater pearls....they are real kaya lang they are the cheapest kind of real pearls. The most expensive ones are the south sea and the akoya (mikimoto), depending on the size and the lack of imperfections.
Uso pa ba ang pearls (more specifically SSP earrings) in Manila. Grabe when I left Manila ang daming nagsusoot ng pearl earrings. But then again, pearls never go out of style naman talaga.

I don't like the regular white-coloured pearls, but like the golden and black Tahitian variety for their unique look and sheen. Esp. the golden and silver pearls, when they're huge, they look really gorgeous, though I'd not wear them. Investment pieces na lang.
