View Full Version : Is being A Upian enough???

My younger sister will take up her entrance test in different universities in less than a year now and she always consults me reguarding what course will i think she should take up..... Ofcourse the thought of "San kaya sya dapat mag-aral?" is always there....
Is being a UPian good enough???
Kasi diba sabi nila inorder for you to make sure na mapapasa mo yung UPCAT you should put a nonquota choice in your second choice atleast.....Dati when I knew about it ,eh tapos na ako mag UPCAT medu nagsisi ako kasi My choices where UP DIL Electrical Engineering and Biology and UP MAnila Nursing and Physical Theraphy. Sabi ko kung sana siguro non-quota course yung inilagay ko I made it, or UP Baguio yung nilagay ko...
Now Im in 2nd Year Archi at UST and I realized na Im so lucky kasi hindi course-coursan yung course ko....Im not downgrading those people na nagtatake ng Asian Studies...European Language, Interdisciplinary studies at kung anu anu pang Studies....pero kasi kung iisipin mo anu mapapala mo dun diba???
Ngayon siguro I'll tell my sis nalang to put her best choices nalang
UP DIL: Chem Engineering and Comsci
UP MAN: Pharmacy and Nursing (or Public Health)
Kung Hindi man sya makapasa Sa
UST: Chem Eng or Pharmacy nalang...
Sa Ateneo naman
I think the Management Economics Technology is a good program
Sorry but in the province we really dont consider DLSU
What are the reasons that would convince us na Being Upian is enough??? Or kung baket dapat naming tanggihan?
I love my lil sis thats why I want the best for her....
One more thing that discouraged me most, the book written by Randy David, I forgot the Title, the girl who finished BS Agriculture major in Plant Pathology in UPLB ends up being DH in Hongkong
and the UP Pol Sci grad na singer sa isang club sa Japan ....
Napakasaklap diba, imagine you worked hard for your college diploma tapos mapupunta lang lahat sa wala???
With these questions in my mind, I've far long concluded that School Bashing was pointless kaya Im making an Appeal narin lalo na sa mga taga Ateneo at La Salle....HAyyyy
Back to my Original Question.... Is being Upian enough????

paging alj who thinks that up is enough. tsk, tsk, tsk. in any case, hindi naman dapat ikahiya ang nangyari sa kanila. choice nila 'yun at malamang na wala na nga sila talagang iba pang mga choices. :)

Kaibigan, wait lang. I never said a UP education is enough. But we must admit it's the better choice in the whole country. UP is not perfect and I never claimed it is. I will never ever say that specially after I met this gentleman in Shrewsbury, England who graduated Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge but works in a funeral parlor as an embalmer. How about this: an Oxford University Iberian Language graduate who works as a full-time salesman at Ciro-Citerio, Birmingham. So, see? No school is perfect! Not even the oldest and the most famous university in the English-speaking world can plea from this wobbly ordeal.

ah, i see. that's how your posts sound kasi. anyways, i still don't think that up is the better choice in the whole country. the best for you, perhaps, but not for me, and i know some friends who didn't even opt to attend up. 'yung iba ust talaga, 'yung iba la salle at 'yung iba ateneo. kanya-kanya lang talagang choices 'yan. those who admit that "it's the better choice" are, hhhmm, confused? :)

I'm sure they did those on their own free will. The Plant Pathology grad could be working in DA now if she really wanted to, or that Pol Sci grad could be in Law School... Thing is, you don't study PolSci or Agri, or any other course for that matter, with a binding agreement that you'd follow that career path. Nor is it written in the stars that when you study Agri, you'd end up cleaning after some Oriental family in Hongkong.

First of all, the concept of Quota and Non-quota is close to irrelevant in the UP Admission process. It may have had some implied effect but in reality, at least now, it does not. UP Admission is highly dependent on your score against all the other examinees. Should your score be high enough to be admitted to your campus of choice, it should be higher than all applicants from your city (Quezon City, etc.). Only then shall you be considered for your chosen course. Should you be booted out of the 'contest' regarding your choice of course, you can still be admitted as non-degree and can choose from a variety of non-quota courses.
As for UP Education being enough - sorry to say but it is not nor it is enough from any university for that matter. Remember that you should always strive to improve yourself through education - formal or otherwise.

Personally, the term UPian jars my ears. I prefer Isko/Iska as a term.
And, it is never enough. MOre horizons more things to know, more developments faster than imagined.
Sure, dealing with the bureaucrats seems a snap after living through UP Registration, and developing a cast-iron stomach after feasting on isaw and fishball, and developing cold-steel willpower surviving the courses, it's not enough to survive in the world out there.

What's a UPian? :confused3:
Honestly speaking, we are the product of the choices we make. Each school has their share of students who made it big and who didn't. Was it their fault? I don't think so. You may be equipped academically but is your personality or character ready for the outside world? That's something a school cannot exclusively teach. That's more from the influence of the society and how you were brought up, etcetera. In the end, the school does not dictate your life, it's your choice.

Ako naman, I took the UPCAT and fortunately passed it kaya hindi na ako nag take ng entrance exams ng ibang school...(actually, hindi naman yata kasi maa-afford ng family ko mag-aral ako sa ateneo *my next choice*, kaya parang kailangan ko talaga ipasa ang UPCAT).
But Allan, wait lang po....don't limit your sister's choices...wag UP lang...kasi you'll never know what's gonna happen...First you have to make sure na magta-take ng mga entrance exams ang sister mo sa kung saan-saang schools kasi mahirap maghabol kung halimbawa hindi siya pumasa sa isa, sa dalawa o sa lahat. Remember, ang some of these entrance exams are given only once a year...
By the way, i don't recall being called a "UPian"....pang ateneo at la salle lang yata yan eh...ISKO at ISKA yata ang natatandaan kong tawag sa amin nuon.
Well, I don't think being a UP grad guarantees you a bright future...(though it helps!!! :) ).
Pakisabi sa sister mo Allan, good luck!!!! :)

Iplug ko lang isang fact: Almost 80% of the employees of DA-BAR are from UP. Especially from UPLB. Keeping this in mind...it was definitely good enough for me. hehehe.
...but it really depends on the person. UP just helps you mature and develop as a person.

I never said that other Universities don't help in molding and developing a person. I just used UP because I have had first hand experience on this. Napakadefensive mo pareng Braveheart. O talagang nagflaflame bait ka lang? :shakehead:

At kung sa UP yun, ano namang masama? Dapat ba UST sinabi niya? :devious:

i'm saying for myself lang ha. no, being in UP is not enough. if you want to get rich (aka materially successful) after college, whether or not you came from UP means nothing. you can graduate from any university in the world, pero pag di mo rin naman ginagamit yung utak mo at yung diskarte mo, hindi pa rin sapat yun.
i always believe that i went to UP not because i want to get my diploma and be a slave for the corporate world, but because i want to get an education.
whatever i do after getting my diploma, is my own business. sabi nga nila, diskarte mo na yun. besides, ano lang naman yung diploma mo? the best things in life are not taught within the classroom. they are to be experienced.

Oh well, can't really say much about UST...and any other school (puwera UP!), kasi hindi naman ako nag-aral sa UST, Ateneo, o LaSalle o kung saan-saan pa...UP-Diliman, pwede pa ako mag-kuwento. :D
