UP College of Mass Communication!!! wala nang iba pa.

centers of excellence ang Journalism and Communication Research departments, while centers of development ang Broadcast Comm and Film and Audio Visual Comm departments, not to mention the fact that UP has the only Comm Research department in the country.

roster of distinguished graduates include media practitioners such as cheche lazaro, loren legarda, jessica soho, karen davila, tintin bersola, tessie tomas, among others.

In terms of Media Studies, I'd have to say Ateneo... The professors are simply astounding (Mark Escaler, Jim Paredes, Sev Sarmenta, etc.). The communication curriculum is more focused on the theoretical aspects of the field, with only a hint of the four major tracks of comm (advertising&pr, film&sound prod, journalism). Sad to say, walang kwenta ang equipment ng Comm Department, especially the studio.

UP has the best mentors for film and broadcast journalism, since their curriculum is more refined according to their field. Kung baga, hasang hasa sila, plus they have the really good tech and equipment.

As for New Media (web design and the like), I hear CSB is tops on the list, with their upgraded facilities and computers and stuff.

can't really judge the other schools but i'm a product of the communication arts program of DLSU and i can say that i'm pretty well-rounded when it comes to radio, print, film and television. The comm department there trains its students in all aspects kasi.

While Letran still isn't at par with the other Communication schools, its starting to be competitive at least. At last year's Catholic Mass Media Awards, Letran had six nominations while UP had only five.

Rochelle Harder won the Best Public Service/TV Ad for "Text". The other finalists are Abortion, Aso Mataba and What's Heavy For You. The latter is the only entry from UP.

Richie Soriano won the Best TV Production with "Pulumpo". All the other finalists' entries also came from Letran. They are: Batanes Documentary and Barangay 564.

ARRIBA LETRAN!!

UST is now making all its classrooms multi-media (we call it the "Tomasino Multi-media) complete with LCDs, a stand with a computer to facilitate discussions, and multi-media projectors. We also have the TOMWEB housed in the UST central library, and the TOMCAT (Cable Television) with TV stations in every building. This is again a response to UST's quadricentenary. :)

hi! i'm from comm in ua&p and it's not all that directed to advertising.. we're also trained in PR, marketing, direct marketing, brand management and even market research... :) but we really lack the production and actual media part of comm. there's copywriting but yeah, that's really more directed to those wanting to become part of creatives. :)

For the Philippines, I'd say Ateneo has excellent communication programs.

Now if you have the moolah (or better yet a scholarship) and want the best. I'd say the the top choice university in terms of communication and media related courses is the University of Southern California (http://www.usc.edu), particularly their School of Cinema and Television (http://www-cntv.usc.edu/) since it currently ranks no. 1 in the US in Cinema and Television studies. Many notable alumni can be found in this link (http://www-cntv.usc.edu/friends_alumni/alumni-notable.php). Also, USC's Annenberg School of Communication (http://ascweb.usc.edu/home.php) is one of the best in the US.

I don't entirely subscribe to that premise, XetraDAX. Maybe half of it. :D

Its not really how famous/grand the graduates are. Believe me, the best Journalists I have ever known had lived a very low-profile, away from the glitz and glamour that the profession brings. The sad thing is, they are turned back to the shelves after their remarkable contribution, never to be heard from again.

The real yardstick is how they carry on the good tradition of their chosen field that we give most credit for; of course their performance will always have a bearing on the school where they came from, thats inevitable. But basically, its the people that makes a school grand and not the other way around.

Hey I think DLSU has a very very good Communication Arts Program. We have the best facilities. We have our own darkroom, radio booth and television studio. We also have very competent faculty members. One of our professors is Vicente Groyon III. He is a Palanca awardee and his novel (I forgot the title, something like Sky Over Dimas...) his critically acclaimed. Dr. Doy del Mundo (scriptwriter of Batch 81, Bayaning Third World, Kisapmata etc.) is also part of our faculty. Amy Forbes (first WHo Wants to be a Millionaire winner) used to teach also. Other notable profs are Judy Sibayan, Bro. Mike Rapatan, and Gary Mariano.

As for famous people, we could only boast a few since if I am not mistaken, ComArts is a relatively new course in DLSU. Some famous alumnus are Richelle Sy, Lyn Ching, RIco Hizon, and Cathy Yap Yang.

In some contests like those held by CCP, a lot of theses from DLSU win first place. I think in UP, there is a flash animation called "Egg" won first place.

Meron din ang DLSU nyang mga yan. In terms of facilities sa media/print related studies, pumapangalawa kami sa UP Diliman. Our graduates are anchorman/woman in international media stations. In addition to that, I think kami lang ata ang may graduates na merong nakikita sa BBC (UK), CNBC (USA) and ABC (Australia). Yes, Veronica Pedrosa and her sister attended U.P. but eventually finished their bachelor's degree from the University of Cambridge, England.

Rico Hizon graduated from DLSU. He used to work for GMA News, a U.P. dominated Media Company. While he was with GMA 7, he stood-out because he's obviously the only guy there with some decent looks. He transferred to CNBC in Singapore and was pirated by BBC after a while to anchor Asia Business News.

Twink Macaraeg did also study M.A. in Mass Comm in U.P. but there were rumors circulating that she did not finish the whole program.

Marga Ortigas is now with CNN as part of research-something (?). I think she's from Ateneo or U.P. (?). She attended a short course in a London university and was a bank teller before she joined CNN.

Cathy Yang is from DLSU. I used to remember her with a very strong and commanding voice while she was with ABS-CBN.

But if it's a choice between Lyceum or Letran, where would you rather go? I understand Lyceum is known as one of the better schools for Mass Comm but I have no idea about Letran. I checked their site at mukhang medyo ok naman yung facilities tsaka yung curriculum..

Would appreciate more comments. Tsaka baka may mga kakilala kayo from these schools. Thanks talaga! :)

But of course, it's a joke. I don't know but I think UP is good when it comes to that matter.

Though has flaws, kung pag-uusapan naman ang "credentialism," may ipagmamalaki rin naman ang UST. There's Yap Daza, Jimenez-David, Joselito Zulueta, Earl Choa and Michael Coroza- who teaches in Ateneo by the way- to name a few.

May nagsabi ditong magaling mag-PA ang mga tag-UST. I take it as a good comment. Yeah, magagaling sila at may work ethics. They tend to enjoy the work, actually. PA's are VERY IMPORTANT IN ANY PRODCUTION- you know this if you really know how things work in the broadcast media.

Singit lang, okay na okay din ang mga UST student pagdating sa adverstising. Astig sila pagdating d'yan. Bow ako.

Even if I am a Thomasian, I can humbly accept the statement that "UP is the best school when it comes to Communications and MEDIA related courses."

Just look at the Tons of publications they are producing year after year! And their alumni lineup is quite impressive.

No offense to other schools (especially to my beloved brothers and sisters from UST-AB) but UP is taking up most of the manpower share in the media field... and on a large margin. Other pioneering schools ( UST, Ateneo, DLRT, etc...) should work double time in order to produce more competitive graduates in order to par with UP. ;)

CEU also got a nice curriculum...okay din yung facilities (radio booth, masscomm lab with an editing room etc, tv studio, stuff like that), sa practicum hindi yung students yung maghahanap ng companies to have their OJT into...the school and KBP chooses (i heard that the seniors become members of the KBP before they graduate...its about the media I.D. thing i guess)they got to have their practicum in four companies (radio, tv, film and ad agency) dilang sa isa...i have a friend who studies there...it sounds good to me...

Hmmm.... Actually, it's an option for me, pero in case my daughter would like to go back to the Philippines to study and wants to take up a Communications course (since she's good in Languages and her grades are excellent in these subjects), I was planning to enroll her in Assumption College. Quite disappointing for those rooting for UP or Ateneo or La Salle or UST.... but I feel Assumption is quite good in this field. I don't know if anyone agrees, maybe it's just me. ;)

Yes citycass, I'd rather have her study in Assumption than UP or La Salle. We all have different preferences naman eh. In my case, I like a peaceful, Catholic environment where my daughter will not be worried about getting involved in fraternities or gang fights, etc. It all depends on the student naman, even if you enroll her in UP if she won't be the best of herself wala rin. Tsaka depende rin sa personality ng bata. I don't like the UAAP and neither does she, so I think it won't be an issue. Why not Assumption? Your President GMA graduated from this College. ;)

UAP?

they do have good students and some good teachers but many of their best faculty members are from UPor took MAs or PhDs from UP!

furthermore the problem with UAP is that it is an OPUS DEI school which means that there is no academic freedom, there is censorship, there is a dress code, and people are privileged if they are children of opus dei (who give tons and heaps of money to the organization) or if you attend what they call "means of formation" (if you are NUMERARY--celibate and lives in opus dei centers forever and ever unless you dont renew every march 19 yearly; SUPERNUMERARY-married or can marry; ASSOCIATE-celibate but you live with you family; or COOPERATIOR-you give donations or "pray" for them.

these circumstances prevent many good people from UAP to shine further. kahit bumabagsak ka na, may aregluhan basta opus dei ang family mo.

I am really sick of these. Puro buhatan ng sariling bangko. Teka nga ha, puede kung magcocomment yung galing sa industry. Kasi parang di ata maganda kung ibase natin sa kung sinong popular sa industry, e if we consider these puro mga newsreaders lang talaga, or sa chika sa college. For example, Sembrano got into the media industry because magaling siya mag-modulate ng voice, at nadiscover niya yun sa case reporting nila sa Business Ad ng UP, not because she was trained sa MassComm. Yung quality ng work e hindi narerecognize e kung bulk ng work e nakadelegate sa writers, producers, etc. So please yung nagtratrabaho sa media or may connections dun.

Main fields:
Broad Comm - UP > But other writers & producers are not grads of masscomm, but of the college of arts & letters.
Film - UP > Awards pa lang, next in line would be Mowelfund and other institutions like CSB which offer animation courses.
Comm Res - UP
Journalism - UP AND UST > Ang edge ng UP is in broadcast, investigative journalism, advertising, reporting, and public relations. Pero with writing (journalism/humanities), its definitely UST.
Communication Arts - Ateneo/UPLB/UST, DLSU

Other fields/courses:
Marketing Communications - UA&P
Development Communication - UPLB
Advertising (Design) - UP Fine Arts, UST
Advertising (Management) - DLSU
Creative Writing (Script) - UP, UST, AdMU/DLSU
Organizational Comm - UP, DLSU
Performance - UP (mostly training from orgs)
Theater - Orgs like Rep, UP, UST (Ma-PR lang ang Ateneo)
Media Studies - UP, far second ADMU

I have to agree with Fair_nd Meadow.
In the last PANA competition, Assumption College qualified and landed in the top 5 but their inexperience did them in when it was time to present.

I have also encountered a lot of fresh graduates of communications from the Assumption and they all seemed very good.

I beg to disagree... theres academic freedom sa ua&p.. U can even read DA VINCI CODE in one of the promenades without a teacher or staff reprimanding u... at lahat ng school may mga aregluhan di lang UA&P... Eh hindi naman talaga ipinagbabawal ng mga Opus Dei schools/institutions ang Da Vinci. They only "discourage" it, you know, the same way people in Opus Dei - owned study centers discourage watching movies like "American Pie"

I'm not sure about this but I heard reports that Opus Dei schools do not admit "illegimate" children. Is this true?
