GMT master - simple yet rugged that you can go casual with it.
it's a rolex so it can do well in formal affairs. hell it costs more that what most people will wear that evening anyways :)

I'm happy with what I have:
Daytona Cosmograph in stainless steel
Yachtmaster in stainless steel with platinum bezel
Submariner in solid gold with diamond & ruby dial
Hubes, I don't think there ever was a platinum Daytona. White gold probably.

was given as a gift by my dad. i actually had one before (GMT-II oyster) but my dad wouldn't let me wear it yet - bata pa raw ako. then it was stolen when in his hotel in london. he then bought a second one. sayang, i could have TWO!!!!. of course, i'm happy with the one that i have. can't be greedy :)

When I went home to the Phils last April 2002 I was able to buy an Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller edition. I bought it for Php 158k @ Washington Alabang Town Center. (I paid in cash because of the discount this retailer gives for cash purchases.)
Being a professional diver's watch, I think durability wise this timepiece of mine will literaly last me a lifetime.
Btw for those of you who are planning to purchase a Rolex don't forget to have it registered @ the Rolex Center along Paseo de Roxas (In front of the Greenbelt Mall or should I say right beside AIM).
malakim
Aug 14, 2002, 03:38 AM
what's the benefit of having your watch registered? any freebies?
wow, nice watch to go diving :)
MayorQuimby
Aug 14, 2002, 04:08 AM
Nah, who says I'll go diving using the watch, sayang baka mawala o kaya baka magasgasan...hehehe ! (Kahit scratch resistant kelangan ingatan).
Anyway, the reason why I bought it is because it's cheaper than most stainless Rolex editions and at the sametime the reviews indicates that it's one of the more durable Rolex watches ( I suppose being able to withstand 1220 meters/4000 ft underwater qualifies as being duarable).
The purpose of registering your watch is that Rolex automatically includes you in their database of owners worldwide based on the serial number of the watch that you bought. More importantly you are assured that the watch that you bought is indeed the genuine article, because before Rolex registers you they inspect the watch itself to ascertain its authenticity.
As for freebies, every now and then you recieve Marketing materials updating you about the world of Rolex.

medyo off-topic but anyone here has a breitling? i think those watches are pretty cool. rugged and all and just as expensive as a rolex.

unless i misread the price tag, i saw one about P120K. the range i've seen is around P75.
check out any stores that carry this line and do confirm if i'm right.
gulat nga ako when i saw the price. i've heard of breitlings before from my dad and his aviation friends. a lot of them wear it and breitling advertises itself as a premier watch by aviation people.
also, breitlings were featured in the movie "skulls"given as membership gifts by this filthy rich secret society

Breitling is a good brand. They specialize in Pilot's watches. Price range would be from 70-150K. However, I find them much too shiny (case and bracelet). Check them out at Lucerne stores.

unlike sa hk ang mga may pangalan dun ay patek philippe, piaget, vacheron constantine, audemars piguet

For Women:
For casual to semi-formal affairs it would be a SS Datejust with white gold bezel.
For formal occasions, nothing beats a Date Just masterpiece in white or yellow gold.
http://www.grayandsons.com/images/product/thumb/c10056.jpg
For Men:
For casual to semi-formal affairs it would be a SS Sea Dweller.
For formal occasions it would be a Platinum or White Gold Day Date in the new Oyster style bracelet and round bezel.

I find it rather pathetic that Rolex seems to be the only brand people know here in Manila. Almost one would dream or actually save for one. And I feel that the showbiz stars who wear (and flaunt) them on TV make the brand "cheap". Peace!
Anyway, there are other better brands...Breguet & Blancpain have complicated dress watches and sporty watches as well.
I own a Breguet Marine Chronograph in white gold & white gold bracelet and a Blancpain Flyback Perpetual Calendar in rose gold and rose gold bracelet. Perfect for formal or casual wear.
Franck Muller makes beautiful watches. It's just so confusing to choose which one to buy.
A. Lange and Sohne are very nice as well. The Lange 1, in white gold, rose gold or platinum (all with leather strap) is truly a classic watch. excellent for casual and formal wear.
Bottom line is: there are other better watches than a Rolex. It's just a shame that these other brands are virtual "unknowns" here.

pathetic may be too strong a word but i tend to agree with you for the most part. i myself would like to buy a breitling (though it may not be considered a "luxury" but the price is) but unfortunately i've yet to earn a paycheck to cover this.
given time, more brands will rise as some already have.

Hey malakim!
which Breitling do you want? If I were to buy one, it'll be from the Navitimer Family. Old Navitimer or Montbrilliant...Have you seen Celine Dion's Montbrilliant? solid gold with matching bracelet, loaded with diamonds and sapphire!
The Chronomats look very ordinary kasi.

not sure of the model i saw that i like but i like my watches rugged and not flashy. i prefer styles that are low key but on closer look exude a sense of authority and elan. come to think of it, it could be from the Navitimer family as that rings a bell.
Chronos may be ordinary looking but it costs more than the entire wardrobe of a lot of people :)

Best stainless Rolex for me is the Daytona.
Gold of Course is the Yachtmaster in pearlface and blue sapphire dial
And yes I agree the Filipinos should open their eyes to the more expensive and other sophisitcated watches like the Ulysses, Brequet, Blancpain, IWC of course the Patek etc....
In fact a few weeks ago I was watch hunting while I was wearing an IWC DaVinci. I went to a Rolex authorized dealer in Manila and was asking about some Rolexes but the sales lady... pardon her ignorance... was not exactly accomodating my queries and as I was asking for the prices I saw her intently looking at my watch and seemed to be sizing me up according my watch's brand/model and ultimately price...
Ignorant fool probably thought I was wearing some sub 50k watch(as this was a leather strapped) and chose to answer my questions with one liners.... ie.:
How much is the yachmaster stainless? P1xx? something... how about the submariner P1xx.... in short she was trying to ignore me... ******* didnt probably know that my davinci was worth more than a Rolex' solid Gold daydate...
The next week I went back and wore my white gold date just with original diamonds on the rim... lo and behold she was so accomodating I almost thought she would roll out the red carpet and let me in their vault.... he...he... seizing theopportunity I made bawi and asked for the price of 30 watches (whihc she now happily obliged ) and left.
Same expirience from some of you guys?

Aug 21, 2002, 12:12 AM
Hey Alfa,
I definitely agree with you!
Heck, even if those salesladies have the watch models on display and they definitely know the price, they still seem to ignore you. Which makes me conclude: they only know Rolex when they see one. Otherwise, they ignore you.
Last week, I went in wearing the Breguet and I was asking for the price of the AP Royal Oak Chronograph...she was like breathing heavily or sighing...as if saying: as if you can afford it!
Truly pathetic. So, I left and decided to just go to HongKong and buy there instead.

well, you just have to acknowledge the fact that there'll always be people who are so condescending especially those who are insecure with themselves.
for me, i got a friggin nice watch and doing nicely in life so why bother with those pretentious and pathetic salesladies.

there's no platinum Yachtmaster...It's actually stainless steel with a platinum bezel.
last time i went to HK, i would say it's more practical to buy here because you have to consider the plane ticket, hotel etc...if you're just going there to buy, then it's not cheap...if you're there on business (with your tickets paid for by the company, hehe) then it may be cheaper.
my dream Rolex is the Daytona in white gold bracelet.
