View Full Version : Red alert! The Bedan newspaper

To all Bedans and other concerned persons:

This seemed to be the most practical venue to warn the San Beda College community that the new school administration is threatening to silence The Bedan, the official student newspaper of San Beda College.

Moves have been made to put the clamp on the 60-year old Bedan institution. The administration, initially threatened to stop collecting the publication fees from students. Then they prohibited the use of the The Bedan office for overnight pressworks. It just keeps getting worse as the admin is now giving the staff until Monday, August 12, 2002 to draft a new constitution so that they can incorporate it in the admin-released student handbook(an abuse in itself since The Bedan is a student run and student published newspaper, thus the admin has no right to order the staff to draft a new charter/stylebook).

Hey peeps, I think Bedans, (hell all people concerned with their civil liberties for that matter)should stand up to this. The Bedan is an established student paper. The paper alone has produced all the Bedan alumni that San Beda can be proud of (Ramon Mitra, Raul Roco, Rene Saguisag, Justo Torres, Caloy Loyzaga just to name a few). The Bedan is the only student organization in San Beda who has remained independent. Time and time again it has fought for the rights and welfare of Bedans. When the nation called for the service of its students, The Bedan stood side by side with the Filipino people (martial law, edsa, anti-bases, anti-cha cha, vfa, erap and so on.) The Bedan, by its very existence, has done much for the cause of campus press freedom in particular and the student movement in general.

It's sad to see that a school proclaiming to be finally on the road to progress is planning to gag the one institution that has kept spurring them towards that very change.

I think it's high time my Bedan brothers to show our school paper our appreciation for the many battles it has fought for us. We cannot allow our only voice to be silenced by the newly-installed barbarians running our school. This is the last draw dammit.

Sons of Mendiola show your support for The Bedan student newspaper!

now this is just so plain dissapointing. the very lifeblood of the Bedan community is once again brought to the ropes by the very people who has greatly benefited in it. the Bedan has been the institution w/in the institution--w/c still is an undestatement to say the least. this is a move against our right to freedom of expression & just so because the Bedan has stood up against they're imposingly mighty will. but that exactly was what made the Bedan community--independent, yet has grown to be Fully Human, Wholly Christian & Truly Filipino.

Bedans will answer the clarion call!

Now why would they want to silence it anyway? And what are we supposed to do? Though I rarely read the Bedan back in college, maybe because what the stuff written their has no appeal to me.

What are the things written on the new admin-released student handbook? What kind of constitution is the new admin asking for The Bedan to draft? In addition, it seems that The Bedan is hesitant about some issues or whatsoever it is, that's why the admin have to inject such coercive action.....which on my part, i dont approve of.

this is just so disappointing. Our fellow Bedan brothers' rights to freedom of expression is once again being endangered.

Pareng Ramirez, bilang isang alumnus. Anu-anong dapat at pwede nating gawin upang panatiliing malaya ang The Bedan?

Sobra na ang admi!
Last year, Associate Editor ako ng Cub Recorder.
Alberic e!
It's very disappointing that the administration seems to be abusing its power in order to kill press freedom!
The Bedan, like any other school paper, is the voice of the students!

What we as alumni could do is by word of mouth or through this medium spread the word that one of the foundations of the Bedan community is being threatened. Hopefully this will reach some person of authority in the Abbey's hierarchy (it would be most fortunate if Tarsi hears about this) who can help the paper out.

Imagine the sweeping changes:

A coed San Beda

A move to become a university

Swift renovations of facilities

Revamp of the old school administration

These were things that The Bedan has been reporting about even when I was a freshman, and don't ask how long ago that was.

Now if the administration manages to gain control of The Bedan who will be left to criticize them in the name of the studentry?

Will the Drummer by the Flagpole's courageous beating be silenced by these people?

I don't know how it is in other colleges and universities but in San Beda, Bedans have always enjoyed freedom. We are used to a liberal atmosphere, where opinions and ideas may not always be agreed upon but definitely respected. The Bedan is one example of the way our students stand up to the powers that be.

It goes without saying that our school paper is highly respected in and out of the campus. It earned that respect because it is one of the few school newspapers that is totally managed and edited by students.

As it is, The Bedan is operating under a stylebook (a publication's equivalent to an org's charter) that has been used since 1969. There really is nothing wrong with the present stylebook, so there really is no reason to revise it. This is the reason why the present editors and staff are reluctant to draft a new one. Add to this the fact that the imposition was just given this week. These guys are in the middle of midterm examinations plus they are rushing next months edition. For people running a school, the administration doesn't seem to be practising common sense.

The alumni of The Bedan is already coordinating for a response to this looming menace in the guise of Benedictine monks and educators. The Bedan's alumni is an illustrious group of Bedans so I guess this is going to be one bloody mess, if the admin remains adamant in their steamrolling of The Bedan.

Again the only thing we can do as Bedan alumni is to spread the word, relay this story to your alumni friends. Hopefully we can raise so much noise that the admin will have to review their moves. We should also do the same for the many changes they are making in our alma mater that seems dubious (the move to become co-ed etc.).

Go San Beda Fight!

ha?? i was out for one year sa beda and eto na ang naririnig go grabe!! whats the fuzzz all about??

pero sa tingin ko hindi dapat i silence ang THe bedan kasi its the voice of the students and yun lang ang lam kong org or group na independent sa admin kasi ang sc eh mukhang dependent o hawak ng admin imbis na maging voice of the students. its wrong to silence the bedan (o ayan balot! me nasabi akong matino sa group ninyo kahit di ako tumuloy sa pagsali ko!!)

its just my opinion pero ok sana kung maging university na ang beda kasi its about time pero parang its not right to make the school co ed kasi parang nasisira yung tradition na beda was and only is an exclusive all boys school kahit pa nung i found ito sa arlegui noong 1901. (if im not mistaken)

yeah the bedan is respected in and out of the campus kasi nga isa ito sa mga student only run school paper sana wag nila itong islilence. i think its wrong....

Dude, sadly, I think alam ni Fr. Tarsi eto, pero he has given discretion to the people under him....impossible naman atang hindi niya alam ang nangyayari sa "pamilya" niya....

Masyadong nagiging mainit ang balita upang hindi niya malaman...

sana nga maresolbahan na ito.Nakakainis din. Tawaging daw ba yung newspaper nating "TABLOID"

If si Fr. Gerard yung medyo hate ang Beda, there's this particular monk na naka station sa Bene na up to now his loyalty is still with San Beda- si Fr. Basil, also a Bedan alumnus. He was the former chaplain ng high school- sobrang ok siya. A great photographer as well, and one of my closest Benedictine monk friends. Perhaps IMHOTEP knows him, I know he's very active sa alumni affairs ng Beda.

I KNOW THAT THE INSTITUTION YOU HAVE WORKED FOR IS UNDER ATTACK, BUT WHAT'S THE CONNECTION TO CAS BECOMING A COED, SAN BEDA BIDDING TO BECOME A UNIVERSITY AND IMPROVING THE FACILITIES???? WEREN'T THESE YOUR BATTLECRY DURING YOUR EDITORSHIP?

I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERNS BUT IT SHOULD BE IN PROPER PERSPECTIVES. I USED TO THINK THAT YOU HAVE SUCH A PROGRESSIVE MIND, BUT HOW COME YOU ARE AGAINST SUCH MOVES? THE MOVE TO IMPROVE SAN BEDA. YOU KNOW THAT SAN BEDA DESERVES SUCH GROWTH IN ORDER TO SURVIVE.

I DONT NEED TO REMIND YOU THE PRESENT STATE SAN BEDA IS IN NOW. YOU MAY NOT WANT TO ADMIT IT, BUT BEDANS ARE LOSING THEIR EDGE. WE NEED CHANGE -- CHANGE THAT HAS BEEN LONG OVER DUE. IF SAN BEDA DOESN'T CHANGE NOW, THEN WE WOULD STILL SEE STUDENTS LIKE YOU WHO ARE AFRAID TO EMBRACE NEW THINGS -- CHANGES.

IT'S A PITY BECAUSE YOU SEEM TO REPRESENT THE OLD SCHOOL OF THOUGHT -- OR WAS IT BECAUSE THE BEDAN IS FORCED TO CHANGE? THAT'S WHY YOU ARE REACTING WITH SUCH LOGIC.

I AM NOT PRO ADMI BUT I WOULD RATHER SEE SAN BEDA COMPETE WITH ATENEO AND LASALLE THAN TO REMAIN IN THEIR SHADOWS.

I BELIEVE IT IS ONE OF THE BOLDEST MOVES EVER MADE BY THE BOT AND DEFINITELY A VERY GOOD ONE. IT MAY CREATE AN UPROAR FROM SOME QUARTERS BUT THE SILENT MAJORITY WHO MOVES SAN BEDA WELCOMES THIS NEW DIRECTION -- AND THAT INCLUDES ME.

The last time I saw Fr. Basil sa Beda was when her mother died and the wake was in the church. It would really be a welcome site if he would be transferred to san Beda but I think he cannot take the work load. The reason why he had to give up being the HS chaplain of Bene is because he has heart ailment. Before I was clammoring if he would become our principal, but di niya kaya due to health reasons. I'll try to talk to him when I see him kapag nag mass ako sa Bene. Sayang magaling pa naman siya- sobra.

Very well said. I just couldn't understand why some of our Bedn brothers could not accept change- I am pertaining to some of my barkada. They should snap out of their "dream world," thinking that San Beda is still the same San Beda during the olden days. But sad to say not anymore. If we want to bring her back to her former glory then change is inevitable. I've been praying for this change to happen for a long time, even during the time I was studying there. San Beda is a sleeping giant waiting to awaken - She just needs a little boost that's all. And yes San Beda University does sounds good.

Brothers in Saint Benedict!

It's unfortunate and pathetic to see the ambitious administration silencing the pathways of expression and obliterating the democratic ideals of truth and integrity!

It's sad that the administration is silencing the Bedan but it seems that the CUB RECORDER, the official organ of the San Bedfa High School is also floating in the waters of uncertainty. I have heard that the administration had a meeting with Cub Recorder and ECHOES (The high school yearbook) Members and perspectives and speculations denoting a merger with ECHOES and Cub is persistently lurking around Bedan grounds... Although there are no truths nor any valid conclusions emerged, and although the speculation is unproven...doubts still remain...

I conform with your views...PLease lay down your points about this too...

VERITY DEMANDS NOT SILENCE...BUT VOICES. STOP THE SUPRESSION OF THE VOICES OF TRUTH!

That in all things, Goid may be Glorified!

Even up to now I still don't know what's all the fuss is about. The way I understand it, the administration is silencing the papers because through the papers we would hear the people who are against San Beda's changes? Am i correct?
