I hear when it comes to debating, it's a real clash between Ateneo de Manila and the University of Santo Tomas that it becomes an exchange of championship crowns between the two.

:D

this is post is obviously an opinion. the only fact here is that UP's number one debater is Carlos Mori Arellano Rodriguez. but still, this not a valid proof to conclude that UP has the best debating team.

Carlos maybe UP's number 1 debater, but william panlilio (atenean) is the philippine's number 1 debater. i think, there is a big difference between being number 1 in UP, and being number in the philippines.

finally, in the recently concluded, Asian Debating Tournament, ateneo emerged the champion. 7 of the top 10 debaters are from the ateneo.

TCWAG, do you wanna change your mind?

Please check the record this year and in the previous years...

The Ateneo Debate Society CONSISTENTLY ranks as the best debating school in Asia. They have been CONSISTENTLY the best placing Asian debate team in the Australasians, World debating championship, etc.

C'mon...let's open our eyes and see who the best are in terms of performance in debating competitions. Not because your not from the Ateneo, you fail to see the truth.

If DLSU garners the top CPA/eng board exams...then kudos to La Salle. If UP or UST tops the med board then UP or UST must be doing a good job. But ehen it comes to International debating, the Ateneo Debate society is the best in Philippines and Asia...beyond any resonable doubt. :whip:

Dijkstra,

How stupid!).

Back to the topic

Di ba nasa KL yung tallest building in the world?

Gets? Masyadong binibigyan ng undue importance ang debating. Yun lang ba ang kaya natin?

I'm glad na yung UP e nagshishift na ng priorities. Meron ng mga collaborations with companies like Ayala, PLDT, Texas Instruments, Sun Microsystems ,Yamatake at Intel. Yep, kahit nagpagawa ng CTC si MVP, yung mga technologies on display sa Innolab ng PLDT e nadevelop sa ASTI at UP.

Medyo mahaba natong natype ko. Ipagpapatuloy ko na yung panonood ng DVD ng The Last of the Mohicans. Astig kasi e, super linaw nung picture at surround sound pa. Galing talaga nung mga designers from Sony. And between the 7 top debaters of Ateneo and those virtually unknown Sony employees, I would pick the latter. They make the world a whole lot coooooooler place to live in…hehehe

ATENEO DEBATE SOCIETY MAKES HISTORY AT THE AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP – TWO TEAMS IN THE FINAL FOUR

July 11, 2003

For the first time in the 28-year history of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship, two Asian teams reached the prestigious Final Four of the competition. Both those teams were from the Ateneo Debate Society (ADS). In one of the most remarkable feats in contemporary academic debating, Ateneo Team 1 and Ateneo Team 3 outclassed over sixty teams from all over Australia and Asia to reach the Final Four of this year’s championship hosted by Multimedia University, Malaysia from July 2-10.

Ateneo Team 1, composed of ADS President Bobby Benedicto (IV AB POS), William Panlilio (MA Philo), and James Bitanga (BS MCT), was the highest ranking team to break into the Final Series with a win-loss record of 6-1. This marks the first time in recent history that an Asian team entered the second half of the competition as the top seeds. They were defeated by eventual champions Sydney University 1 in what will be remembered as the Australasian Championship’s closest and most tightly-fought semifinal. The Sydney team won by a split vote of 4-3 and a margin of 0.5 pts, defending the proposition that “liberal democracies should fund religious schools.” On their way to the Final Four, Ateneo Team 1 defeated teams from Monash University, Melbourne University, and the University of New South Wales, among others.

Ateneo Team 3, which was composed of Eleanor Uy (III AB POS), Jess Lopez (III AB POS), and Mary Anne Fajardo (IV AB POS), entered the Final Series as the No.7 seeds. All 3 members of Ateneo Team 3 were competing in their first Australasian Championship, making them the youngest Filipino team to go past the preliminary rounds. Ateneo Team 2, composed of Camille Ng (IV BS Mgt), Wilfred Segovia (IV BS ME), and Madeleine Dy (IV BS ME), also made it to the Final Series, but was defeated by Ateneo Team 3 in the Octofinal. Ateneo and Monash were the only institutions with 3 teams in the Final Series.

Ateneans also made a remarkable showing in the individual speaker rankings, with Panlilio ranking 2nd, Benedicto 6th, Ng 10th, Uy and Lopez tied at 14th, and Bitanga 18th. Ateneo had the most number of debaters in the Top 20 among all the Asian universities present at the competition.

The historical achievements accomplished by the ADS at this year’s tournament extends the boundary-breaking record of Ateneo at the Australasian Championship. In last year’s competition at Melbourne University, Benedicto, Bitanga, and Ng, became the first Asians to reach the Final Four since the inception of the tournament. The accomplishments of the ADS at the Australasian Championship follow unprecedented success at the All-Asian Championship, where Ateneo is the reigning champion, and at the World Championship, where Ateneo currently places No.4 in the overall rankings, behind only Oxford, Sydney, and Monash.

The ADS will be competing next at the 10th All-Asian Championship in Malaysia and the National Championship in Naga City. They will be defending the title of Grand Champion in both events.

Somebody said that UP is good and too bad they don't focus on debating...

Do you think Ateneo focuses on debating???
Ateneo offers practically nothing to the ADS until recently...
ADS doesn't even have a coach, we train on our own.
We are not subsidized, we beg from our parents.
The only thing Ateneo has given ADS is the permission to use half a room as their tambayan.

So what's this focus talk all about? Ateneo doesn't focus on debating although they're really happy when ADS wins.

UST is no longer as good as they were before. Wala na sina Franco, Arlene and Vicky...and Arnel.

Ateneo Focuses on the basketball team though.

Correct me guys if I'm wrong, but I've read something in the past about a DLSU debating teams defeating 5 ADMU debating team and eventually winning in a contest. Anyway, I'm also impressed by UP's/ADMU's accomplishments when it comes to debating.

i was just asking for the facts. i did'nt even say that UST has no achievements. ADS supporters has presented the necessary evidence to prove their claim. now, its your turn. well, if you really can't, then my speculation that UST does not deserve to be called the second best in debating must be true.

it is your burden to prove your claim. it is as simple as that.
im not claiming anything, so it follows that i dont have the burden to search those perceived achievements of UST. i've noticed that you tend to insult me everytime you respond to my posts (calling me stupid, dunderhead, etc.etc)? why? is that your way of masking the fact the ust is not really second place (as you claim it). i never did that (insult ) to you . why are you so cruel for someone who is just asking a very very simple question. where are your achievements? where? where? and where?

Let me tell you the few things I've realized by reading all your posts that are intended to insult me.

1. They all speak of the same thing, that I'm stupid and all. Can you not think of any other terms like airhead, or moron, or whatever? Your limited vocabulary reflects the fact that your terms intended to lament me are more appropriate to you.

2.I've come to realize that you are really old. Imagine an old person loitering here just to insult the youngbloods. If that is not pathetic, then I don't know what it is.

3. That your claims are all imaginary.

4. That you really hate young peolple because you can't beat them.

5. That i have stop clashing with you or else you'll not be able to function normally for your semi-neolithic brain will cease to operate by the time you've exhausted everything in it for trying to call me stupid. I respect the OLD generation.

6. That you're way below me.

a BIG loser indeed.
You're the most coward person I've ever known.

Two planks why.

1. You can't admit the fact that you're an incurable liar (liar indeed). - claiming things that happened to be not so believable and not so true (yikes).

2. You live with the past. Move on. The status quo proves that your claims are so ancient that it can't and it shouldn't be taken seriously.

excuse my intrusion, let me suggest other words you can use instead of "dunderhead" (i'm already growing tired seeing it so often :D ):

***, birdbrain, blockhead, bonehead, boob, buffoon, dimwit, dodo, dolt, donkey, dope, dork, drip, duffer, dullard, dumb bunny, dumb cluck, dumb head, dumb ox, dumbbell, dunderhead, fool, goof, goof ball, goon, half-baked, half-wit, idiot, ignoramus, imbecile, jackass, jerk, knucklehead, lame-brain, lightweight, loon, lout, lunkhead, moron, nerd, nincompoop, ninny, nitwit, numskull, oaf, pinhead, scatterbrain, schmuck, schnook, simpleton, spaz, stoop, twit

but i guess, you already know all these --anyone who thinks he has the right to call another person a "dunderhead" should be really, really smart...

even God won't call his creatures "stupid"

but I didn't have Theology in College, did the OP's of the Great Pontifical University teach you otherwise?

now, to post something related to the topic:

I said earlier that even my gf (a member of the UP debate society) admits ADMU's supremacy in debating. but she'll break up with me unless I qualify my statement: ADMU has the Best Debating Team in the country... because UP's team doesn't get any support from the University --they don't even have a coach for goodness' sake. ;)

do not prove your machismo by putting into question an individual's sexual orientation. it is not fair.

Ateneo Debate Society enters Australian Finals
Oct. 2003

THEY MADE history, again.

For the first time in the 28-year history of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, two Asian teams made it to the Final Four.

Both teams are from the Ateneo Debate Society.

Ateneo Team One, composed of ADS President Roberto Benedicto (IV AB PoS), James Bitanga (BS MCT ‘00), and William Panlilio (MA Philo), outclassed over 60 teams from Australia and Asia.

With a win-loss card of 6-1, the team ranked first among the top 16 teams that qualified for the final series.

This is the first time an Asian team broke into the final series in first place.

Two other Ateneo teams also made it to the final series. These were Ateneo Three, composed of Mary Anne Elizabeth Fajardo (IV AB PoS), Eleanor Uy (III AB PoS), and Jess Raymund Lopez (III AB PoS); and Ateneo Two, composed of Katrina Camille Ng (IV BS Mgt), Wilfred Oliver Segovia (IV BS ME), and Madeleine Rachelle Dy (IV BS ME).

Ateneo Three finished at 7th place in the prelims while Ateneo Two finished at 10th. Ateneo Three, the youngest Filipino contingent ever to break into the final series, won and also reached the final four.

Ateneo One successfully hurdled the octofinals and quarterfinals, making them qualify as one of the only four remaining teams in the semifinal round.

The team, however, lost to eventual champion Sydney University Team One by a split vote of 3-4 and a mere margin of 0.5 points. This was the closest semifinal match in the history of the tournament.

Ateneo 3, on the other hand, eventually lost to Monash University Team 2. Only Ateneo and Monash had three teams in the final series.

Ateneans also made a remarkable showing in the individual speaker ratings. Panlilio ranked 2nd, Benedicto 6th, Ng 10th, Uy and Lopez tied at 15th, and Bitanga 18th. Ateneo had the most number of debaters in the top 20 among all the participating Asian teams.

“It’s a truly historic achievement which I hope reminds everyone of what Ateneans, Filipinos, and Asians can accomplish in an internationally competitive arena,” Benedicto remarked.

The competition, hosted by Multimedia University in Malaysia, was held last July 2-10.

You are right in using the operative word "sometimes", because MOST OF THE TIME, La Sallians are "far more intelligent" than thomasians! Kung ateneans nga, tinatalo ng la sallians, thomasians pa. just look at the recent finex competition where ust did not even place in the top 4. ateneo was far second to la salle.

Ateneo Debate Society Scores Back-to-Back Victories

Asian Champions for the Second Consecutive Year
National Champions for the Fourth Consecutive Year

The Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) made history once again by winning both the National Debate Championship, held from October 25-29, and the Asian Debate Championship, held from October 29-November 5.

The ADS became the first institution to successfully defend the Asian title when ADMU Team A, composed of Bobby Benedicto (IV AB POS), Camille Ng (IV BS Mgt), and Wilfred Segovia (IV BS ME), emerged as Grand Champions of the 10th All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championship, hosted this year by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The ADS also made history by retaining the National title for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year. ADMU Team C, composed of Leloy Claudio (I AB COMM) and Bianca Rodriguez (IV AB COMM), were crowned National Champions during this year's competition at the Ateneo de Naga University.

The Ateneo Debate Society Wins the Asian Debate Championship for the Second Consecutive Year

November 5, 2003

Less than two weeks after winning the National Debate Championship for the fourth straight year, the Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) emerged as the Grand Champion of the 10th All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championship. The ADS became the first team to successfully defend the title when ADMU Team A, composed of ADS President Bobby Benedicto (IV AB POS), Camille Ng (IV BS Mgt), and Wilfred Segovia (IV BS ME), defeated Multimedia University, Malaysia Team A during the Grand Final of this year's championship, hosted by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from October 28 to November 5. The Ateneo team was proudly supported by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone, Co.

ADMU Team A was the highest ranking team after three days of preliminary rounds, outperforming teams from all over Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia. On the way to the Grand Final, the top seeds defeated teams from the University of the Philippines, the International Islamic University Malaysia, and the University of Indonesia, among many others. The Grand Final against Multimedia University, Malaysia was a rematch from last year, when Benedicto, James Bitanga (BS MCT), and William Panlilio (MA Philo), defeated the same institution to win the coveted title. This year's victory makes Benedicto the first person in history to win the Asian Championship twice.

The Ateneo contingent also made a remarkable showing in the individual rankings. Benedicto was named the No. 1 Debater in Asia. Ng was ranked 3rd, and Segovia 5th. Eleanor Uy (III AB POS) of Ateneo Team B, was ranked No. 8. Leloy Claudio (I AB COMM) of Ateneo Team C, making his first appearance at the Asian Championship, was the 11th Best Debater.

Ateneo Team B and Ateneo Team C both reached the Final 8 of the competition. Ateneo Team B was composed of Uy, Mary Anne Fajardo (IV AB POS), and Jess Lopez (III AB POS). Ateneo Team C was composed of Claudio, Bianca Rodriguez (IV AB COMM), and Glenn Tuazon (I AB COMM). Ateneo Team D, consisting of Kellda Centeno (II BS Mgt-H), Dione Cotoco (IV BS MCT), and Rhyan Uy (MA Eco), qualified for the Octofinal. The ADS was the only institution with four teams progressing past the preliminary rounds.

The back-to-back victory of the ADS at the Asian Championships marks the continued success of the Society in international competitions. In the past two years alone, the ADS has reached the final series of the World Championships and the Final Four of the Australasian Championships. The ADS will be competing next at the Oxford and Cambridge Intervarsity Championships, in the United Kingdom

The Ateneo Debate Society Wins National Debate Title For the Fourth straight Year

October 28, 2003

The Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) emerged as National Champions for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year. Ateneo Team C, composed of Leloy Claudio (I AB Comm.) and Bianca Rodriguez (IV AB Comm.), triumphed yet again to fend off challenges from the University of the Philippines Dilliman and the University of Santo Tomas in the annual national competition, hosted this year by the Ateneo de Naga University.

The Champion team, seeded 4th after the preliminary rounds, emerged victorious after 11 grueling debates held across five days of competition. During the final round, the Ateneo team sat on the proposition side, defending the motion that "The Philippines should abandon its democracy to be more like Singapore." The tournament makes use of the British Parliamentary format, wherein teams are given only fifteen minutes to prepare for the debates.

The victory of Ateneo Team C will go down as one of the most significant and emotional wins for the ADS. It marks the arrival of freshman Claudio, already seen as the future of Asian debating, in the collegiate debate scene. Claudio is the first freshman in three years and only the second in the history of contemporary Philippine debating to win the prestigious championship. On the other hand, Rodriguez, a semifinalist in 2000, caps off a tumultuous debate career by claiming the title which she came within an arm's reach of winning during her freshman year. Their victory came at the heels of one of the most unpredictable tournaments in recent history, which saw the Ateneo team produce stellar results and face some upsets. This recent victory is also a testament to the deep bench of talent in the Society which has assured the continuous achievements of the organization in the past years.

Ateneo Team A, composed of Wilfred Segovia (IV BS Management Engineering) and Eleanor Uy (III AB Political Science), emerged as the highest ranking team after the preliminary rounds. The top seeds, both finalists in 2002, reached the Final 16 in this year's competition. Ateneo Team B, comprised of Mary Anne Fajardo (IV AB Political Science) and Jess Lopez (III AB Political Science), and Ateneo Team F, comprised of Madeleine Dy (IV BS Management Engineering) and John Fajardo (IV AB Economics), both reached the Semifinal round but were handed surprise losses. Ateneo Team F, a last minute entry, came into the championship having missed a full season of training. Teams A, B, C, and F were seeded first, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

The dominant team standings were reflected in the individual speaker rankings, which saw the ADS claim half of the Top Ten Speakers of the tournament. Lopez was crowned as the Best Debater in the Philippines. Dy and Uy tied for 2nd Best Speaker. Fajardo and Segovia tied for 5th Best Speaker. The ADS has also produced the Best Speaker in the Philippines for the past four years.

This latest title continues what has been a remarkable streak by the ADS, which has consistently been breaking records at both national and international tournaments.

sayang i wasn't able to finish my training because of my hectic schedule..

but its FEU whose got the best debate team in the philippines! even with its asian counterparts, FEU oradec never fails to bag the Gold.

sad truth is, because ORADEC doesn't have that much money to send everyone on debate contests abroad( exempli gratia: NZ, US, UK, AUS, et cetera) much opportunity is lost..
